When Utah Sheriff Bud Shumway and his friend Mayor Howie decide to get out of town and go camping, they have no idea what kind of mayhem and intrigue they’re getting themselves into, from the death of the camp-host’s wife to finding rare jewels in the desert. Having their friends Shorty and Doc along just adds to the chaos, especially since they have a strange prescience that Doc is about to die.
Throw in a geocacheing dog, stolen cactii and dinosaur tracks, a murderous hawk, a ghost mountain lion, weird hoodoos, a moveable feast, dangerous river rapids, blizzards, talk of plot twists, and an unusual type of cafe, and who could ask for more intrigue and adventure in the untrammeled wilds of northern Utah’s Dinosaur National Monument?
This is book #19 in the Bud Shumway Mystery Series.
First off, this has been a fun series to read, with a new mystery to be solved in each book. The settings are awesome, with lots of history and geographical backgrounds.
This book, though interesting, was really choppy with a rather disappointing ending. There were many inconsistencies as well. We find out in a rather offhand way about the murder "weapon". Bud's on again off again concussion is confusing, as are warnings about an indigenous snake that in reality is found on the opposite side of the US. The whole rafting trip got to be tedious. And I keep wondering why Bud insists on taking his dogs on trips when half the time they aren't allowed in the areas. Having a pooch on a rafting trip is dangerous to both humans and the dog.
Miller’s previous Schumway books have kept me attentive and involved. Compared to what I was expecting, Split Mountain seemed to drag out. It seemed more fluff and fill than mystery. It was the first time I have ever fallen asleep in a chair while reading a Schumway mystery. Not up to Miller’s usual standards.
I love reading about Bug Shumway and his adventures. This is the19th addition to the series and it's as interesting as the first. Bud and his friends are great. The location is a great part of the story because I get information about an area I have never been. I highly recommend this book.
This book had a fun ending. A definite plot twist. This story had lots of fun and adventure. Just the way I think a river journey among friends would truly be.
