Witches have always ruled the continent. Three predominant covens, all with their own strengths, keep a tentative peace amongst themselves and the humans. When the power balance shifts, witches are forced to face their own mortality.
Rykki had the privilege of being born a Mistbarren, the largest witch coven on the continent. The coven is family, the start and end of life for a witch. When Rykki is exiled for transgressions against the coven, she’s forced to find a new home way to survive. Running from her past and a magical organization tasked with hunting her down, the Weavers, Rykki seeks solace in the human city of Pollara. She finds a chance at safety through a pact with Pollara’s Duke, offering her magical services in exchange for harborage.
Living among the humans, Rykki discovers there’s more to the world than the coven taught her, including the existence of male magic users. Kane Mobley is one such surprise. Kane has raw power unlike Rykki has ever seen, but his knowledge of the Weavers draws her to him. Kane knows more than he’s letting on and those secrets run deep. With the Weavers on her trail, Rykki must decide; continue to run to safety or risk her life for the truth.
I'm torn about this. There were some great moments but mostly it just fell flat. The characters doesn't speak to me, whereas the FMC is weak and not very smart. The MMC is one of the reasons that I finished this.
The plot and the action others are referring to wasn't that exciting according to me. One interesting part that kept me going (apart from the MMC) was the magic. Runes or tattoos that glowed when being used. However, it feels like that and everything else wasn't quite finished.
Jumping back in time to find out more about the FMCs past made me think there would be some big reveal but it really wasn't. Considering her age at the time I understand her insecurities, but it doesn't make up for the lack of growth.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the MFC she is fierce and stubborn which I love to see in a female lead. It is well written and keeps you intrigued throughout the entire read. Enemies to lovers is a particular favourite for me
This book took me longer to get through than any of the other ARCs I've been working my way through, which is why it's getting such a late review. But it's not the fault of the book - I was reading it during a particularly stressful time and had to set it aside at 60% through and come back to it later. But I digress - let's review.
As always, the basics -
POV: third person limited POV Characters: primarily Rykki and Kane with the addition of someone called Widow Verb Tense: past Triggers: scenes of battles and depictions of violence/bloodshed Spice Level: 2-3ish (a few scenes of s3x in the story)
I'm not gonna lie. I picked up this ARC solely because of the title. I weave as a hobby and get excited when I see books with fiber arts included. That said, weaving is meant more in terms of webbing, like a spider weaving a web, and don't think I didn't catch the whole Widow character comparison to a black widow spider cause I did.
This book was a pretty good intro to a series. I'd give it 3.5 stars overall. The story moves along decently enough, though some parts of it lag, which might also explain why I had to set it down a bit here and there. It is readable, though, and I liked the idea behind it.
The magic system is pretty interesting. There are regular humans, witches with varying magical powers, and weavers, who are mystical and strange people with their own magical abilities who are not witches. I wanted a little more insight into exactly what it is weavers are and where their magic originates. We got information about the witches, the different covens and their particular magic affinities, and their history. We learned the weavers have always been the ones who come after a witch on behalf of her coven when she's exiled. But I don't have a clear picture of what a weaver really is.
Rykki is a timid character when we meet her, afraid to use her magic and somehow alert the weavers to her location so they can come and kill her after being exiled from her coven. She works for the local city government near her home in the forest and we learn pretty early on there's some sort of agreement she has because she's contracted to make things like healing potions that get delivered to the city's residents. She tries to stay out of the city as much as possible because the humans mistrust her and don't like having her around.
Then there's Kane, a mysterious man who shows up and clearly has magic. This is news to Rykki who doesn't know of any male witches and initially worries he might be affiliated with the weavers. I like Kane. He exudes charm, charisma, and enigmatic mystery the whole way through, and he's also incredibly powerful. We learn a little about him as the story progresses, but I wanted more.
Henley was another interesting character. Selected as the go-between for Rykki and the government, he takes her any orders for additional potions and picks up orders she's fulfilled. Their relationship starts off strained because of his fear of her powers, but it shifts over time and she finally develops a bit of a friendship with him. I enjoyed Henley a lot, too.
I will say there were things I didn't understand and places I felt the author could have developed more for us.
Overall, I thought the book had a good starting place and made me want to know more about Rykki's background and whether she'll become a formidable fighter at some point given her unique powers. That said, I would have liked a different ending.
I'd certainly be up for reading the conclusion to this story, though, because I'd love to see what happens next and learn more about the weavers and the Widow.
A unique magic system and an even more unique world. How the author imagines runes and covens and witches isn't something I've ever come across before. The characters are complex and there is clearly more to the story, hence the continuing series. I also appreciate that throughout much of the novel, Rykki isn't sure exactly which side is the right one to be on; that kind of suspense is crucial to plot development and the overall story. Her past clearly plays a significant role and as more scenes from ten years ago unfurl, so does that layered plotline. This aspect of the writing is well thought-out and decently executed.
However, there were many issues with the novel that caused me to DNF at 50%.
The characters' dialogue and interaction with one another and their environment appears robotic and monotone. It's stiff. Rykki claims to hate going into town and socializing with people, yet she freely walks the streets of Pollara and will even heal random soldiers without much context...and the people let her do it? It doesn't seem like a real human being response. The way Rykki and Kane talk, like they are familiar with one another and are actually "friends" also doesn't register as real human being dialogue. Rykki's skepticism isn't showing, and I thought that hesitation and social isolation were parts of her character?
And then there is the repeated use of filler words... I can tolerate quite a few written errors. We're only human after all and even the best will miss something. But the filler words and basic directives between characters and their surroundings makes the writing appear almost amateur. (I believe I said the same thing about "The Ritual", "Haunting Adeline", and "Fighting Destiny".) This is probably also partly the reason the characters' dialogue sounds forced when read aloud, like I'm reading stage directions from one of my students' textbooks.
I like this story. The concept is certainly unique and it deserves a bit more editing and revision. It truly has the potential to become something great, but right now it just feels like a third draft as opposed to a finished piece.
I don’t know if I’m supposed to say I received an ARC… but I did! I loved this book, and I don’t normally read about witches.
This new world that has been created by the author has a lot of potential and there is a very nice plot line surfacing. My biggest concern is the cliffhanger since this book isn’t even released yet. I already want the next book.
Rykki is a witch that has been shunned or banished from her coven due to some secrets in her past. She is labeled a traitor and her blood is given to the Weavers so she may be hunted down and brought to justice.
She has survived on her own by employing the help of a human, most specifically a Duke from a nearby kingdom. This is strange for a witch because the two don’t normally mix together. Her liaison is Henley a strapping young man.
I really thought this book was going to be a RH but it turned into a love triangle, when Kane enters the picture!
Kane is a male who has magic. An impossibility. Or so Rykki has always been told. She has to overcome her own insecurities to start fully finding herself and be able to uncover the secrets she is encountering daily.
When the Duke forces her to work with Kane, the time they spend together ends up bringing them closer together as she starts to learn his secrets. While he is also trying to learn hers. It all comes to a head when she realizes they are both fighting against the Weavers.
Alas, her past catches up with her and all the secrets have started to unravel, leaving the book on a cliffhanger with a major plot twist that will leave you wanting more.
I will say that it is a bit wordy at the beginning which did make it hard to get into at the beginning chapters. Once the plot started to form I was hooked though.
Tattoos that glow. Magic. Love interests. Just my jam…
I received this book as an ARC to read and review.
This book follows witch Rykki, who no longer lives with her coven and is being hunted down by weavers who plan to return her to her coven to face punishment or end her. Rkkyi has been hiding from the weavers and her coven for years outside a human town called Pollara. While in hiding, she is employed by the Duke of Pollara to make potions to aid the people of Pollara even though they hate witches. While working with the Duke, Rykki meets Kane, a mysterious male who can use magic, which Rykki has been told her whole life that male magic users don't exist. Now, being forced to work with Kane, Rykki has to figure out if she can trust Kane and her feelings or if she should listen to people's warning to "Stay away from Kane." Follow Rykki as she learns who to trust, how to maneuver her powers and fight the incoming dangers that are looming at Pollara's gate.
I quite enjoyed this book! I found the magic system very creative and unique using runes carved into skin, tattoos, and even pearls as ways to help the different covens channel their magic. The book did take me a little bit to fully get into the story, but once the plot started to develop more, I got really into it. I do find that the romance between two of the characters happen a little suddenly as they go from hating each other to liking each other pretty quickly, but I do like how the romances play out. This book also had a few twists I did not see coming and quite the cliffhanger! I'm eager to return to this world with book 2 and see what happens to the characters next!
A strong independent female main character. Witches that use a unique magic system. A bit of a love triangle with a slow burn romance. A mysterious villain and plenty of action.
***This is my first time writing a review so I am going to do my best to not give anything away***
It took me a little bit to get into this book but once I was about 1/3 of the way through I was into it. I really love Rykki and the way her character starts to develop as you learn more about her past. Throughout the book Kane is very mysterious and seems to be a bit morally grey and after the cliffhanger at the end of the book I really hope to learn more about him and his past in Book 2! I really enjoyed the plot of this book. The identity of the mystery villain surprised me a bit but thinking back it totally made sense. I had a guess about who I thought it was going to be but I was wrong. I liked the magic system the witches use, it's definitely unique and something I haven't seen in any other book. It was also interesting to see how each coven uses their own unique way of accessing their magic. There were a few grammar errors or what I felt like were missing words but it didn't deter me from reading the book. I do feel like at the end I was left with way more questions than answers so I can't wait to read book 2!
I enjoyed this book I think it's a good read. If you want a unique take on witches and their magic system and enjoy a slow burn romance, I definitely think its worth reading!
3.5/5 Starting in medias res, you get right into the story, following the FMC Rykki - A witch who's on the run from her coven and the Weavers. This book has a unique worldbuilding and magicsystem where covens is divided into different branches using runes, tattoos and implants as a way of enhancing their magic abilities.
Overall this was an easy and fast read with a good storyline that had me hooked all the way through. Some plotlines couls have progressed faster and more smooth but as a whole I quite enjoyed it. There's a big "twist" (not sure if twist is the right word, but something like it) at the end of book 1 and somewhat pf a cliffhanger.
I give this book 3.5 stars as I enjoyed reading it but still feel there is room for some deeper explanations sometimes as there was some plotlines there seemed superficial and not fully developed as profoundly as it could have been throughout the story.
I'm definetely intriqued as to what will happen in book 2 and was sad that ended ad I wanted to continue reading about Rykki's journey and development. And of course to see what the MMC, Kane's deal is!
I felt like it could have had a better ending/better cliffhanger. Maybe it should have just ended before the last chapter.

I found Witches of Pollara to be an exciting romantic fantasy novel set in a world where witches hold all the power. The story is centered around Rykki, a witch from a powerful coven who has been cast out. Rykki must continue to survive alone in the human world using her magic as an exchange for protection from the nefarious Weavers who are still hunting for her.
As Rykki finds it increasingly impossible to stay hidden, she discovers new truths about the world that she had been sheltered from during coven life... including male witches like (hot and broody) Kane Mobley. Kane’s mysterious origins and obvious secrets keep Rykki second guessing herself and her growing feelings.
The book does a great job of creating an interesting magical system and developing characters that you fall in love with.
Witches of Pollar was a hard to put down read and any fans of romantic fantasy will love the world and characters in this book. This book is a mix of romantasy, action, mystery, strong character development, enemies to lovers and love triangle. 10/10 would recommend.

It was a slow start but I forced myself to keep going and I am so glad I did! I would say once you get to about 30% mark things start to pick up. Which is the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. I loved Rykki! She is spunky and is never one to mince words around anyone! She has a drive/fight in her that is so raw and overpowering that it makes you want to get to know her and her story more. To get to that deeper level.
I also really enjoyed the growing relationship between the FMC and the MMC, it is definitely a slow burn and about a 2.5 on the smut scale. But the story absolutely makes up for it! And I loved how at first it kept me guessing on who the MMC was going to be.
Overall it was such a great read and a great escape into the world of Witches and Weavers and I cannot wait to return when the second book comes out! Because that cliff hanger…. Ughhhhhh did not see it coming! Come on book 2!!!
Let me start by saying I love Kane! I enjoyed reading this novel for the characters, and of Rykki's past trauma. The way the author guarded Rykki's past kept me wanting to read more. I liked how she integrated her past and followed it up with present scenes in order to tie the story together. Rykki and Kane's love story was a slow burn, and I always hated how Kane pushed himself away even though he always taunted her sexually. I was not expecting the ending when they revealed who the Widow was, and Henley's betrayal! I also was shook when I saw that Kane had a wife! I loved the steamy scenes. The only negative comment I have, is I thought there was a lot of filler in the chapters . I also thought that she over explained scenes in the beginning to the point where certain passages became repetitive and redundant. But overall, I loved the concept of the witches and this novel as a whole. I can't wait to read book 2!
I had the privilege of arc reading this and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.
All in all a wonderful book. Strong, stubborn, and fierce FMC Rykki who is a witch who has been banished/shunned from her coven for past things. She has been in hiding from the weavers and is recruited by a duke to help the people fight against the weavers using potions and magic. She’s forced to spend time with our mysterious, dark and yummy MMC Kane. A male with magic but Rykki has been taught males don’t have magic. Rykki is now on a mission for answers to everything in her past, present and future. Great world building without to much complexity, unique magic system, and a cliffhanger that left me NEEDING more.
This was a great read. Such a unique world of humans and magic weilders that left me eager for the next book in the series. I cannot wait to continue following the story of Kane and Rykki and see where Caitlynn Barr takes them, especially after the twist ending of this book!
Rykki is exiled from her coven and living outside of a city where the Duke of the city has a contract with her to provide magical supplies in exchange for a home outside the city that she can hide from her past in.
The mysterious enemy threatening the city and others around it is also the same enemy hunting Rykki due to a horrible event that occurred in her past.
The characters are complex and interesting, but dialogue seemed forced and flat at times. Rykki's relationship with a human seemed to come out of the blue and had no build-up to it in my opinion, which was jarring, considering the dynamic between witches and humans that was referenced throughout the book. Transitions from scene to scene were a bit rough and made keeping track of timeline difficult and confusing at times. There were also plenty of times where conflict arose, like with the sudden appearance of an item from Rykki's past, where a flashback scene would occur, explaining the origin of the item, and then suddenly the turmoil the conflict brings seems to just vanish and isn't mentioned again in present day after the reader knows the origin.
One main reason the story got 3 stars instead of 4 is because there were quite a few noticeable typos and grammatical errors and some inconsistencies in the writing (one example that plagued my mind for the rest of the book was what the lined rune on Rykki's wrist is used for being for the exaxt same purpose as the triangular rune Kane gave her to carve). The book needed at least one more good proofread/edit before print.
*Recieved as an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
This book has a very unique storyline. I am not going to lie, i struggled a bit in the beginning of the book, but once I got past the initial bit, I could not put it down! I dissolved this book in a day. It's not your typical witch book, Rykki is on the run from her coven, for what? We still don't know. Some higher coven, that's not quite witches, is tracking her through blood magic, and holy heck, is there a plot twist regarding that in the end! I am skeptical about Kane, but maybe I'll learn to love him in the future or hate him, I'm still not sure. I have so many questions, and I need answers!

A little slow to get into for me, but once I did, it was so good! The characters are really well written and I love the relationships between them. And the twist at the ending! I can’t wait to read book 2!
The one thing I would change is that this isn’t written in first person POV. It seems a little choppy to start but once I got about 25% into it I was used to it. I think that’s what took me longer to read it. I can see why it is written the way it is; I am just used to reading more in first person with multiple POVs instead of the whole story being in third person.
That being said, I definitely recommend this book!
Witches and weavers is a fun book about an outcast witch and the story of the weavers chasing her.
Rykki leaves the only home she ever knew to live on the edge of a town and depend on humans. She keeps to herself and keeps her deal with the humans in order to survive. That is, until everything turns upside down, she meets people she didn’t think could even exist, and she starts to care about things other than herself.
Fun, different and interesting. Slow burn, found family, touch her and die!
I really enjoyed this book. It was fairly fast paced and easy to read. It might need just a little more editing but nothing that detracts from enjoying the story. I look forward to seeing what happens with Rykki next and understanding more about some of the other characters, such as Kane and the Widow. I love the differences among the covens and how they all channel their magic, as well as the on-going conflict with the weavers, and tension with the humans. The romance in this book is a slow burn and I for one am a fan of that. I will patiently await the next installment of this novel.
It was long book I had a hard time in the beginning I think it took tell about 1/3 of the way in to really get into this book for me.
Rykki our strong, stubborn MFC is on the run from her coven but will we ever know why… She is labeled a traitor and is being hunted down by weavers who plan to return her to her coven to face punishment.
This book is full of twist and turns, Widows twist I did not see coming and the ending such a cliffhanger.
This was such a good read! An intriguing and exciting read where we follow Rykki as she is exiled from her coven and makes her way in the human kingdom where things are not quite as Rykki has been told. Fantastic world building that is beautiful and descriptive and draws you in, a captivating and enthralling storyline and characters that are strong and well developed. Twists and turns to keep you hooked and on the edge of your seat, I cannot wait to continue this adventure.
I was fortunate to receive the ARC for this book. If you’re a fantasy reader with a love for slow burn, this book is for you! I loved getting to know Rykki, Kane and Henley’s characters. There are quite a few grammar and spelling mistakes, however, not a huge deal. I focused more on the story. Now that it’s done and I’m left on a cliffhanger I can’t wait to see what is to come!
Fantastic new series! I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well written and it had me captivated from the beginning. If you like stories about Witches but are looking for something different, this is the book for you! I’m still not sure who can be trusted and that ending made me question everything even more! I will be watching for book 2. I need answers after that cliffhanger!
This book was so good! I loved getting to know each character, and getting a good visual on the world around them! The twists that came at the end had me shocked and speechless, and wanting book 2 to be here ASAP! Definitely worth the read if you’re into Fantasy book!
First off…. I was skeptical …. Until exactly 33% of the way in and then I was basically fully invested and could not put this down.
There are a lot and I mean A LOT of questions you will not get the answers to in book 1 (and dear god I’m praying there’s a book 2) … and there is a cliffhanger so just be ready for it. I sat in my bed for a good 15 minutes staring at my ceiling with no answers to my questions but still the book has a choke hold on me.
I love that Rykki isn’t a poor pity me FMC. I hate those and they drive me insane. She’s stubborn AF but she’s always willing to try her hardest at proving anyone wrong (even if SHE is in fact wrong) and Kane is swoooon worthy! Knows what he wants and goes for it! I love him … even when we find out what we do towards the end. I don’t think it’s going to have a huge impact on their relationship. At least I really hope not!
I also really love the romance in this book. It was very well done in a way where it was very realistic. The way the author goes into detail during the romance scenes was perfection and I could picture every bit of it happening in real life. I guess what I mean by that is sometimes in Romance scenes although they’re done well you can’t help but think “oh right like that would ever happen!” lol but in this book … it was just so well written and I appreciated that so much because it just added into the connection you feel with the characters.
Rykki reminds me so much of myself. Stubborn, hard headed and nobody can tell me no because I’m just going to turn around and show you Yes I can!
It was a great story with a TON of action. I’m looking forward to the next one for sure!!
*Received this as an Arc in return for an honest review*
I liked this book. It has a good plot and lots of room to grow. I do think it needs a little more polishing, but the concepts and characters are interesting!
This is my honest review in exchange for an advanced copy.
The plot had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. There were so many unexpected twists and turns, and the ending left me shook. It's definitely worth the read!
