A stirring collection of poetry by Kelly Boyker, I was riveted by Zoonosis (Hyacinth Girl Press), not just the language, but the fable-liked lyricism of each piece. There’s an intensity in each poem, monstrosities coated in beautiful language, deceptively gruesome.

From start to finish, “Zoonosis” will put a spell on you. “Of course the story begins with a wolf” and is filled with such everyday grotesque truths “Gleaming packages of flesh / and muscle cut to fit your plate” that it is often difficult to distinguish fairytale from reality—AND—that is the masterful penmanship of Kelly Boyker! I’m reading it again and you should too.

Really impressed with this one. Sometimes the imagery was disturbing, but it always felt so perfectly worded.
