Curious Mysteries and Conundrums for Inquisitive Minds is a compilation of six different stories that spotlight clever, young sleuths who employ keen observation and a healthy understanding of history, civics and science, to solve the mysteries or dilemmas they encounter in each story.
This book, the first in a series, is somewhat reminiscent of the Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective collection from the 1960s, but unlike that series, this one uniquely highlights characters from different walks of life and different regions of the world.
The six story titles are as
A Bizarre Bend of Events (Texas) Strange Brew (Arizona and Navajo Nation) The Glow of Hollywood (California) A Very Venomous Plan (Missouri) The Pen is Mightier than Muscle (Hudson Valley, NY) and What Lies Beneath the Tundra (Arctic Alaska)
The first part of each story builds up the suspense and invites the reader to predict what happened. The second part serves two purposes—first, to resolve the mystery or dilemma, and second, to impart historical, civic and/or scientific knowledge to the reader in a manner that is not heavy-handed or overstated. Instead, this information is embedded within the character’s explanation of the clues. Each story also includes two to three advanced vocabulary words that readers can understand through context and not feel overwhelmed.
From water rafting on the Rio Grande River to gawking at celebrities in the Hollywood Hills, readers will need to sift through multiple suspects and a medley of unusual circumstances to unravel each mystery or conundrum.
This book is perfect Readers in the elementary to early middle school years (though younger and older readers will enjoy the stories too!) Homeschoolers who can utilize the book for vocabulary and critical thinking skills. Teachers and Librarians who conduct story time. Parents looking for cliffhanger style mysteries to read aloud or together with young readers.
