It used to be that when you pressed the “Reset” button on a video game console a "Loading..." screen would appear along with a progress bar indicating 1-100%. This book is based on my own Reset. I experienced a mental and physical breakdown and Reset discusses its affects on my life including times of dark depression, panic attacks and debilitating anxiety. It is the story of my Breakdown journey and the experiences I've had in pursuit of Hope and Healing. Accompanying my own story in Reset are the stories of 18 other people who share their stories of burnout, breakdown and other forms of suffering, and most importantly, how they have found (or are beginning to find) Hope, Healing, Redemption and Rescue in their own personal life-journeys. For those of you who are suffering this book was written to tell you that you are NOT alone. Maybe by reading our journeys you can begin to find the path to Hope and Healing in yours.
About the Author Often introduced as an expert on media influences, Brett Ullman travels North America speaking to adolescents, leaders and their parents on topics including sexuality, substance abuse, self-injury and mental health. Driven by a desire to discuss, explore and share the Christian reality of living in a media-saturated world, Brett's seminars engage and challenge attendees through high-impact, technology-driven presentations. Participants are inspired to reflect on what we know, what we believe and how our Ancient Faith ought to serve as the lens through which we view and engage modern culture.
Husband to Dawn, and father of Bennett and Zoe, Brett and his family make their home in Ajax, Ontario where Brett leads and directs Worlds Apart, a charity focused on empowering individuals to re-align their lives with Biblical core values often muddled by media but central to Christian living. Brett and his family live in Ajax, Ontario, Canada and attend C4 Church in Ajax.
Mental and emotional health are still often taboo topics in faith circles today. Personally I know that much of what I lived through was attributed to personal sinfulness. While I'm not denying the power of accountability or responsibility, the need for genuine acceptance and support for people suffering with mental health illnesses and emotional struggles is high. Will we respond with desire to embrace and understand?
Brett speaks with raw honesty -- brutally so. His situation is immediate, his experiences still close around him. Unlike authors who share their stories long after their circumstance, Brett shares from his heart, soul, body and mind in the moment. Leaving behind Christian-ese, mental health jargon, and useless platitudes, he lays it all out with expressed desire that others in similar situations will know:
"You are not alone."
Brett asked a while back if anyone would be interested in sharing their personal "resets". As scary as it was, I thought it would be a good step towards healing. So I shared and was privileged enough to hear other reset stories -- raw, weak and strong. I could relate to Brett's "brain zaps" and fireworks exploding against the eyeballs even when my eyes were shut. So much resonated with me, and yet our stories were completely different.
The prophetic truth of Brett's book is simple, it's honest, it's loving, and it's hard. It's hard to read because the "fix it" mentality we all seem to have kicks in and as a reader you find yourself saying: "Just try -- !!!", but then those readers who have been where Brett has been find themselves saying: "Don't try that! Just lay back down...".
Wherever you are on the journey, be welcome to join Brett and his rag-tag troop. Dare to be open to the scary reality of mental illness and emotional pain, but in the daring be prepared to find community, hope, and love.
