The year is now 2121. The plan has officially reached its midpoint. After finding out some horrible news, twenty-year-old Brandon Muñoz is drawn towards a risky decision. While his new life and position come with promises, his heart aches at the responsibilities he has taken.

Government uses enforcers to reduce population and dissent - 3.5 stars

It is 2113 in what used to be the United States. There are two regions, east and west coastal. The people have surrendered their voting authority to a ruler who employs "Forcemen" to round up dissenters as well as bring in people with incurable diseases and euthanize them.

For families, seeing an new born or an elderly person taken away is devastating. There is a way to get medical treatment is you are not rich enough to get alternative help: you can sign up for a eight year term with the Forcemen. Forcemen are well compensated and have rights to have any single member of their family given advanced medical treatment.

Each person in the eastern region is given a chip - inserted at birth - that identifies and locates that person forever. The chip insertion program started eight years before the story starts. After the inception of chipping, there have been riots. People who want out try to disappear; they try to flee and head to wilderness areas.

The story is presented from the view of a family with a young man who is about 20 years old finds that the young man's father is diagnosed with a cancer-like disease. The implications of state control are observed firsthand. Relationships are quickly made and broken.

The tale includes a look at corruption in the country's leadership and the Forcemen. The alternatives for life outside government control are stark. There coastal countries trade with each other at arm's length. Life is dependent on the direction of the Forcemen's guns.

"Modus", Brandon Castillo's debut novel, is a gripping and thought-provoking dystopian thriller that explores themes of overpopulation, authoritarianism, and scarce resources. The story takes place in a world where the East Coast has been ravaged by civil war and is now struggling to survive.

The protagonist, Brandon Munoz, joins forces with his childhood friend Aria Reyes to enlist in the Forcemen, a special unit established by President Martin Reign to carry out his controversial population control measure. As they delve deeper into the government's agenda, they uncover dark secrets threatening their existence.

Castillo's writing is exceptional, effortlessly weaving together tense dialogues and thought-provoking subplots. The author's first-person narrative adds a personal touch to the story, making it all the more relatable and engaging.

Overall, "Modus" is a chillingly realistic tale that will appeal to fans of drama and suspense. Castillo's debut novel deserves recommendation for its unique storytelling and exceptional character development.

Absolutely loved Modus. I am glad I gave it a chance. I have to compliment the variety in character. Each personality gives you someone to see yourself in or automatically get attached to. Obsessed with Liam and Steven!

The story takes place in the future. Brandon joins the Forcemen to save the life of his father who is next to be executed. The coast is overpopulated, therefore a diagnosis of a deadly condition means you will be executed instead of treated. Forcemen and a family member are exempt from this for their service to the coast. When things take a turn, Brandon and his family have to find safety elsewhere.

A lot happens in the story. The character experiences feel very real to the reader. Can not wait for what’s to come. Saw the author announce a sequel. I am very excited for it, because we were left with a cliffhanger.
