"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.
Judy Moody has the Monday morning blues. Then she goes to school and Mr. Todd has prepared a celebration of National Bubble Wrap Day for class 3T. He even has on a bubble wrap tie. Rare! Judy has an epiphany. If a moody Monday can be transformed, then so can any day. For the rest of the week, Judy, Stink, and her friends find ways to celebrate each day of the week. Judy's parents even join in on the fun. What Judy discovers is that when you try to make every day a special one, regular days are even more blah. Then it is time for Blah, Blah, Blah Day. Fantastic strategy, Mr. and Mrs. Moody. This new addition to the Judy Moody series features the iconic illustrations from Peter H. Reynolds that we have all come to know and love. Read this with the Judy Moody fans in your classroom or household. It will make your day.
Thank you to Candlewick and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
Did you know that most people don’t smile for the first time on a Monday until after 11am?
Judy is having a grouchy, no smile Monday until she notices something different about her classroom. The bulletin board doesn’t have a rainbow of paper crayons on it today. They’ve been replaced by bubble wrap animals.
Not that kind.
Mr. Todd informs his class that today they’ll be celebrating Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, and what could turn a glum day into a fun day quicker than bubble wrap?
Her Monday frown now turned upside down, Judy comes up with a brilliant idea: why not find something new to celebrate every day!
What follows is a wacky week featuring rat stew, ice cream for breakfast and fun facts.
“Can you believe Bubble Wrap started out as wallpaper?”
I loved Mr. Todd’s tie. Accessorising bubble wrap style is right up my alley.
Be on the lookout for a pig called PeeGee WeeGee and Ninja Squirrel.
If you want to celebrate the weird and the wonderful, a good place to find inspiration is Days of the Year.
In this 16th book of the series, Judy Moody finds herself in a dull Monday mood, dreading the start of the school week. Determined to turn things around, she decides to make each day of the week a unique and fun-filled holiday, except for Sunday, which she designates as a "snore in bed" day.
Judy's imaginative ideas lead to hilarious and unexpected outcomes. For example, her National Feed the Birds Day ends up becoming National Watch a Ninja Squirrel Day. Every day takes on a different theme, making each one an exciting adventure. One of my favorite parts is when Judy and her brother sneak out of bed armed with backpacks filled with zucchini. They leave the zucchinis on neighbors' doorsteps with kind notes, spreading unexpected joy.
This book is a delightful read, filled with laughter and creative ideas. It reminds us that even the most mundane days can be transformed into something extraordinary with a touch of imagination. The lesson I learned from Judy Moody in a Monday Mood is that every day presents an opportunity to have fun and make it unique if we use our imagination.
I particularly enjoyed the concept of National Blah Blah Day, where Judy's parents suggest listening to the voices that have been nagging you and determining if they provide helpful information. It's a day that encourages active listening and reflection. Through Judy's experiences, we learn the importance of being open to new ideas and perspectives.
Overall, Judy Moody in a Monday Mood is a fantastic addition to the series. It showcases Judy's vibrant personality and ability to find joy even on the most ordinary days. This book teaches us to embrace our imagination, find fun in everyday life, and appreciate the unique moments that each day brings. So, join Judy on her imaginative journey and discover how every day can be a thrilling adventure!
Who hasn't had the Sunday night blues? Young Judy Moody is no exception so when feeling rather down at school, hr teacher Mr. Todd comes up with an idea that cheers her up - he declares a reason to celebrate "Bubble Wrap Day." It is indeed a strange day to celebrate but it opens the door to new types of celebrations for Judy, her brother and her friends. Their ideas are wild and crazy as "bubble wrap day" but, open up the opportunity to do good things and celebrate differences and isn't that a wonderful thing?
Judy Moody is a kid pleaser; children in Grades 1-3 will enjoy this fun story and well done illustrations.
Judy Moody is in a blue mood over Mondays until her third-grade teacher, Mr. Todd, turns Monday into Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. She enlists the help of her brother, Stink, and friends to make every day of the week memorable by creating holidays such as Dress Up a Vegetable Day, Happy Feed a Ninja Squirrel Day, and Wear Purple for Peace Day. By the time the new week rolls around, however, she’s come to realize that “when a holiday comes every day, it’s not so special anymore . . . and sometimes a good old Monday is all the adventure you need.” Newly independent readers will enjoy reading the previous books in the series, which began with Judy Moody Was in a Mood (2000).
I was not very into this one. We live in a sinful world where there will never be peace. There are going to be wars. "Protesting for peace" is a useless thing to do. Go do something actually important.
