ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ My sweet found family just got even bigger with this book, and I AM ALL HERE FOR IT. Every new character brought something so special to the story, and I loved watching these relationships develop and become part of the chaotic, beautiful family I have grown so attached to.
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Does this book hurt me and make me want to scream and cry once again? Absolutely. Apparently, this series has decided to keep me permanently suspended between happiness and absolute anguish, giving me the sweetest, most heartwarming moments before immediately breaking my heart all over again. But did I love every single moment of it anyway? OH, YES. I would gladly put myself through all the emotional devastation again for these characters and this found family.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ Apart from the fact that the previous book ended IN HELL, this one doesn't exactly start on a brighter note. You're right back in hell, right back to suffering, and right back to having your hearts shattered. Why? Because apparently, this series has decided that giving us even one moment of peace would be far too generous.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ This entire book is a beautiful journey in itself. It is probably one of the most beautiful representations of hope, despair, hopelessness, and love I've read. You get the perfect mix of everything: bonds strengthening, relationships developing, people finding their true calling, and sacrifice.. SO MUCH SACRIFICE!! A BIT TOO MUCH SACRIFICE!!!! MELISSA, PLEASE STOP!!!

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ If the previous book dealt so beautifully with depression and anxiety, this one explores the darker side of PTSD and the ways it can completely affect a person. This is indeed a beautiful journey for all these characters, but it is one filled with sadness, grief, and just enough hope to make all the difference.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ Every single character gets their own journey started in this book, but one thing becomes painfully clear: NO ONE ESCAPES THE PAIN. If you have a favourite character, just prepare yourself, because sooner or later, either in this book or the next one, they WILL suffer. AND THEY WILL SUFFER A LOT.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ Probably the most beautiful part of this book is Scarlett's final journey toward reaching her potential and becoming the leader she was always meant to be. Everything she has experienced finally forces her to mature, trust the people around her, open up, and learn to rely on her family when making plans and decisions. I feel like this is finally the book that completes her growth and prepares her for everything coming in the final one.
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ But still... can she PLEASE have a break? Leave my baby alone. She has suffered enough...😭😭😭😭

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ Still fuck you, Callan. I don't care.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ The romance in this book? I cannot even begin to talk about it. It is painful, but painful in such a beautiful, sweet way. If I had to choose one word to describe their relationship here, it would be sacrifice. It begins with a sacrifice and ends with one too.
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Sorin will give absolutely everything to protect and support Scarlett, while Scarlett would burn down the entire world and sacrifice everything to keep him safe. None of them will have a moment of peace unless the other is safe. Their love is simply on another level, and I genuinely don't think any other couple could come close to them when it comes to mutual love, sacrifice, and protection.
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ And what I love most about these two? Their maturity. It is almost annoyingly beautiful how healthy their relationship becomes. They communicate, they respect each other, they know when to give space and when to step in, and they even manage to FIGHT IN A HEALTHY WAY. I MEAN, COME ON!!! What kind of fictional couple is this? Can they please teach everyone else how to do relationships?

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ Melissa, was it not enough for you to hurt me with the ending of the previous book? WAS IT REALLY NECESSARY TO HURT ME AGAIN WITH THE ENDING OF THIS ONE??? PLEASE LEAVE MY TWO FIRE BESTIES ALONE 🥲🥲🥲🥲

UGH! This series is killing my soul. I effing LOVE the concept, and when the author is writing her own creations instead of churning out some blended version of ACOTAR/TOG, I am absolutely mystified. But 600+ pages of nonsense, arguments, BLAND sex, recycled phrases, and absolute rambling with just the odd gripping chapter, is not enough to make this the masterpiece it wants to be.

Once again, I have to read the next instalment because I simply NEED to know this super secretive information that is the proverbial carrot dangled in front of the reader to keep them committed (imprisoned) to slogging through each subsequent tome. Dear lord, at this point I guess what’s one more book?

The side characters are the absolute tits, but they’re being used as a backdrop instead of giving them any development or weaving them into the dialogue. Please, give me more Eliza quips and take out 30% of Sorin and Scarlett’s interactions - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD(S). Her potential love story arc introduced in the final chapters was an absolute cheap shot btw. It’s the only thing keeping me afloat right now.

I have such mixed feelings about this book. The author does such an incredible job of putting her characters through it. She knows how to pull on all the feelings. I screamed and cried and for a good chunk was royally confused. My brain just can't keep track of so many characters, powers, races, gods, ect. I wish so much I could hold it all in my head because I know a lot of it is going to be very important in the last book and I'm worried I'll be even more confused.

Scarlett and Sorin were really solid in the book for the most part. I absolutely despise that Sorin lost his powers. I mean he's alive so there is that, but watching him grieve that loss was painful! When Scarlett drew from him was one of the sweetest most tender moments I may have ever read. I did not agree with Sorin on Talwyn. Scarlett should have been allowed to murder that bitch. I do think it was very hypocritical of him because we all know he would kill without thought if anyone hurt Scarlett.

Cassius and Cyrus man. These two drove me insane. The constant tug and pull between them. I completely loved watching both be broken but trying so hard to be able to put the other back together.

I hate Callan. I hate him. He is a boring POV to read from. He is whiney and annoying. Tava deserves SO much better and I really wish she had found happiness elsewhere.

Now I'm going to write myself a little reminder so that when the next book comes out maybe I'll be able to remember all the characters and what happened.

Scarlett and crew start the book by traveling to Avonleya. Sorin is back from the dead but is slowly loosing his powers. It was the cost of brining him back. Callan (The human prince) is reeling from watching his parents and best friends die by the hand of Alaric (The main bad dude). Instead of turning to his new lover Tava, he chooses to pull away. Tava makes many speeches about how she is not waiting for him and she is moving on but never actually does.

Cyrus is Sorin's 2nd I believe. He lost his first lover a male name Merrick when he was super young. He also lost his twin flame. He is haunted and can't sleep at night so Scarlett's soul mate and guardian, Cassius stays with him. They have a friendship that is quite obviously moving into something more.

They arrive at Avonleya and meet Scarlett's long lost brother and king, Cethin. Cethin's 2nd is a man named Razik. He is the grandson of a god... I think. He can shift into a dragon. We find out him and Cassius are cousins? But they because Cassius Father basically raised Razik they're more like brothers. Cassius also learns he can partially shift into a dragon. He has the wings and the fire. Also maybe scales.

Talwayn finally gets her head out of her Ass and realizes she is being hella used by the Maran Lords. But of course it's too late. She still thinks Sorin is dead and spends a ton of the book just throwing herself a huge pity party. She realizes Tarik is not her twin flame and has been using her since the beginning. She tends of finding Ashtine (Queen of winds) is pregnant with Briar's Twins (Briar is the king of the water court). Alaric needs royal Water blood to access the prison so he can set the Sorceress free. Who I think is a goddess... or something???

Scarlett is able to bring down the wards on the continent because she finds the two missing mortal Heirs. Drake, Tava's brother, is the heir to one kingdom. The other is a mortal I think with the last name Hall who was hiding out in Avonleya this whole time.

Nuri is in this book. She is a vampire and Scarlett's friend but ended up swearing allegiance to Alaric for unknown reasons. She also is the countessa or ruler of the Night Children.

Juliette shows up while they're fighting after taking down the wards. She is the oracle and her mother who was a witch is killed by Callan during the fight.

Eliza, Sorin's General, is severely injured during this fight. Razik and her clearly have some sort of love affair going on. But somehow no one notices.

Cethin informs Scarlett their mother is the goddess Saylah. I don't know exactly how that affects Scarlet but it seems important.

Alaric ends up finding Ashtine and holding her hostage to try and get Scarlett to negotiate with him. Cyrus and Neve who is the 3rd in the water court stay with her and Alaric. Alaric takes them down to the prison to see the Sorceress. He leaves poor Cyrus there to be mentally tutored by her. She just plays back all his terrible memories to him.

Cyrus was suppose to become Cassius's source but he kept refusing. I think Cassius was worried about tying Cyrus down and also was worried he would resent him eventually. Because Scarlett can no longer pull from Sorin she will pull from Cassius. So he needs a source ASAP. But Cyrus is tuck in the prison so they're trying to find someone else to be his source. They ask Eliza but she advises she is already Raziks source. Cassius is super upset because he really doesn't want anyone else to be his source but Cryus isn't an option.

Tava ends up sacrificing herself to save Ashtine and her babies. She has sex with Callan, then disappears like a thief in the night. Callan blames Scarlett even though it was Tava's choice. Her brother Drake also went with her to sacrifice himself.

Scarlett draws from Sorin one last time and their twin flame mark disappears. She is pissed and goes to see her Goddess mother so she can bring back Sorin's powers. That is how it ended.

Rayner is part of Sorin's court. He is the ash ryder. We get some of his backstory. On the southern Isle's him and a bunch of other people were tortured and bred to make more powerful fae. He killed everyone on the island. Alaric is apparently the son of the ruler of that island. Alaric is there searching for a lock. The lock opens the mirror gates so he could travel through them.

Okay, remember what I said in the previous book ? Forget all about it ! In this one I finally liked Scarlett and Sorin ! They finally stop the insanely annoying bickering and were a united couple with plenty of beautiful moments.
I still have some complaints but it might be me not liking this type of writing style. So let me just summarize as like and dislikes to make it easier.

DISLIKED :

- constantly unnecessary bickering or jokes in between important moments that made me want to yell at them that “THIS IS NOT THE TIME”
- Callan being so incredibly indecisive about Teva.
- how unnecessary stubborn Cassius was about Cyrus being his source.

LIKED :

- finally loved Scarlet and Sorin’s romance, still will not make my top 10 couples but I finally felt them.
- Cassius and Cyrus beginning, because nothing actually happened yet.
- multiple POV’s
- Plot, story, pace and development
- new characters from Avonleya
- Cethin Sutara aka Scarlett’s brother
- the action
- Azrael ( he is great and he is not even there as much as the others)
- obviously love Eliza, still like Suri.
- Talwyn deserved what was happening to her even though I still have sympathy for her because all she needed was honesty not to be abandoned by Sorin when she needed him because he was a father figure to her and the way he just left her, the way she was manipulated by Tarek, just made her bitter and blind by rage. She was incredibly entitled and stupid but she her pain was valid.

So overall I liked the dynamic of the relationships in this book much better and I like how they have a found family of sorts with all that was happening. Now I go to the last book.

4.5 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

You are mine, and I am yours.”
“All the way through the darkness.”

1. I could not get a breather throughout this book.
2. Cyrus and Cassius were the stars of this book.
3. Another painful cliffhanger.
4. This book felt a tad overwhelming at times, not necessarily a bad thing but it felt packed or perhaps I did not have the emotional capacity with how much the author squeezes my heart and keeps me on edge.

I can't believe I have one more book left.

Every time. I’m like crying, sobbing getting my heart pulled out. Started the book like that, and it just kept going throughout with getting my heart shredded. Always surprised at the twists and turns and choices made. Every book I fall more In love with each and every character. Their pain, joy and fears literally grab hold and keep me hostage as I read/ listen. I have no notes !!!! Everything is just perfection. I can’t recall the last series I loved this much and it pains me it’s about to be over. I’m just glad I have one more book and more books in this universe.

Audibook Review: Laura Horowitz (Narrator), Gregory Salinas(Narrator) : I have so enjoyed this story being brought to life by these narrators. They continue to bring such depth of emotion to this story that I am at time brought to tears as I listen. I know that this is an amazing story and I am so glad that it was entrusted to these two to narrate it as they have definitely done it more then justice. I love how these two tell this story with such passion and character. The pacing, tone, pov transitions and flow is always a pleasure without any distractions. I have literally played these to friends as an example of what I think an amazing audiobook is. I typically listen to my audiobooks on 1.5 to 2.0 and I listened to this at 1.75. I highly recommend this as an audio book.

This book has:
Strong FMC (Stabby)
Morally Gray MMC
Enemies to Lovers
Touch her and die
Found Family
Revenge Plot
Fae Courts
Hidden Identity

I'm not sure what went wrong with this book, but it was definitely down there with my least favorite of this 5 book series.

The first half of the book was slow and boring. The last half was a different setting, but also slow and boring.

I'm getting really fed up with how often and the myriad of ways Scarlett is described as being "super duper powerful" but then she can barely kill a handful of people and make a few shadow animals without being so depleted of power she can't even function. I appreciate the checks and balances of magic wielding in this book, but it's too much to the point of being unrealistic. Scarlett grew up her whole life without magic- without even KNOWING she had magic to begin with. She was trained as the deadliest assassin on the continent, but when her magic is too low, suddenly she is incapable of using a simple blade to kill anyone or to protect the people she cares for. It's bizarre.

It's also bizarre for her to be using her magic in such superfluous ways during training or when she is trying to get her revenge on Talwyn, when her Source is rapidly running out of magic whenever he has to refill her ridiculous uses of power. Talk about selfish and childish. I'm not even sure she uses her Fae gifts anymore except for a couple of times. I mean, why use the only parts of your magic that regenerates without having to leech off your weakening twin flame and husband?

Cyrus and Cassian's (oops, sorry, I mean Cassius's, because copying ACOTAR isn't obvious at all) whole dynamic doesn't make sense to me. I don't understand why Cassius is fighting everything so hard. Cyrus, sure, that makes sense. But Cassius? Nah. The conflict there just feels like a lame way to bring drama. Take a Source, dude. Eliza seemed to manage it without any forethought whatsoever. Why can't you?

Either way, at the end of the day... I'm obsessed with nearly every single character. I'm a little salty that Briar, Sawyer, Neve, and Nakoa all kind of get pushed to the background after book 2 and I barely learn anything new or personal about them... but, in general, I am loving the whole crew. Razik is my new favorite character in this series, and I'm definitely here for the HEA.

Even the second time through, I'm itching to start the last book. I don't know if I've just been in the mood or what, but I'm loving this series so much!

Scarlett still has her moments, but she can pull herself out of it and realize she's being a bit irrational. I can appreciate that.

I still do not like Talwyn, however, I can see why I was feeling a bit of sympathy for her. She is really very immature and she has no clue on how a Queen should behave and would act. There is a reason so many people have manipulated her in her life. It's kind of sad.

I also am still not a fan of Callun. I get why he's the way he is, I do, I just don't like characters like him.

I just have to say that I love both Cethin and Razik. Razik is so broody, but there is just something about him. He reminds me a lot of Rayner. Cethin, I love that he wants to be there for his sister. He is literally doing everything in his power to do right by her. I hate that sometimes Scarlett doesn't see that.

Cyrus and Cassius I still feel the same way. I love them individually, but I love them together. They both made me cry towards the end. They are both in different situations, and it broke my heart.

---> 3/17/25
I do think that this series is getting better as we go along. I'm so committed at this point lol

I've been a huge hater of Talwyn and I'm not sure what to think of the fact that now I feel a bit for her. Just a little, but it's there and I don't like it lol. I'm curious how she will be used in the next book.

I love Cassius and Cyrus and I need these two to figure out their shit so they can just be together already. Please and thank you.

I really need to know what will happen with Sorin and I hope that we don't have to wait long in the next book based off that last chapter in this book.

Oh my! Have I mentioned that I loooooove tgis series!? The characters - flaws and all, the writing, the world that got a whole lot bigger and the package as a whole. I can't wait to read The Reaper and the finale and to somehow get my hands on all those bonus chapters which are kind of hard to come by if you don't live in the US and use different devices for ebooks. Or I'm just too stupid to know which one will be a fit for mine. Anywaaaaaay: if you like fantasy novels, try this series! ❤

I only gave this book 2 stars because of the side characters but even those are getting boring.

Erase all the temper tantrums, character ramblings, and pissing matches, then the series wouldn’t have needed to be 5 books long.

One thing I noticed, that irks me with this author’s writing is the repetitive use of describing words such as “darkness”. It is as if the author runs out of ways to describe Scarlet and her darkness. It’s like she’s telling me she’s dark but I want to be shown the darkness.

And the journey continues 🙂‍↕️

I just don’t even know how we’ve gotten here, so much has happened. So many betrayals. So many secrets. So much lore.

I feel like we get a decent amount of answers in this one as far as heritage for some of our MC’s go. We are also introduced to a slew of new people. Which kept it interesting.

I will say, as we learn of the different heritages, worlds & lands it brings in a lot of history and lore. And because we are learning the true heritage for SEVERAL characters, my brain absolutely could not follow all the history and lore being explained. But that’s a me problem. It just further solidifies my terrible grades in history class 🫡

We have Scarlett on a revenge tour, and I mean, who doesn’t love a pissed off, vindictive woman?

Okay, this is my favorite in the series so far. I think I’ve even started to like Scarlett & Sorin…somewhat, haha. They finally felt more grounded as a couple, more like a team (and squabbled less). But I was, again, more drawn to other (developing) couples!

I also liked how the world was expanded upon, how everything felt bigger in scale, with various threads slowly starting to come together. I can’t wait to see how certain things play out.

Lovedddd first 50 or so pages. Couldn’t put it down during the last 50 or so pages. Everything in the middle was boring AF. So much info dumping and pulling from TOG, ACOTAR, and FBAA. The parts of this series that I have loved were original ideas. The parts that I have hated were basically the author trying to be someone else. I’ll read book 5 bc I need to see how things turn out for my beloved side characters but I just hope it’s original and not this wish.com type of stuff.

Somewhat, everything's coming together now but still, there are many unanswered questions!! My gods, i can't wait to see the epic ending in the final book. Already counting days!!!

5⭐️4🌶

This book is really building the series. We are seeing more locations and more cultures, and are finding out more and more about the origins of the main characters.

While I very much enjoy reading about Scarlett and Sorin, the side characters really hold this story together. I love reading about the struggling mortal Prince Callan, and about the wounded and struggling Fae Warrior Cyrus. Plus, Cassius is always so solid, but he's learning a lot about himself in this book.

Scarlett and Sorin continue to try and evade Alaric and his assassins while at the same time trying to build alliances and find a way to stop Alaric from decimating a whole group of people simply for power.

The Fae Queen Talwynn continues to be whiney and self-possessed, but I think she's starting to open her eyes to the bigger picture going on around her. She's still my least favorite character.

I'm interested to see how all of this wraps up in the next book.

This series just keeps getting better! I know I said this with the last book, but Melissa continues to improve her storytelling and world building, to the point where I need an out of book world map & some lineage charts, and I am loving it. My favorite character and our newest POV got his start in a bonus chapter at the end of the last book and I adore him. The best ship is on major slow burn 🔥, but the tensions are building and I cannot wait for them to boil over. The end of this book is absolute chaos, so buckle up. I think that when we all started reading Lady of Darkness, we never dreamed it would turn into the epic five book fantasy it has. We never dreamed that we'd get this attached, this betrayed, this heartbroken and I'm scared, but excited to see what happens when we finally have to say goodbye. "Hope even when it's pointless," or something like that. 😉

3.5 ⭐️ Still not a fan of Scarlett, but Sorin finally called her out on her hypocrisy. Love all the side characters and the found family!

I loved this book. This is probably my favourite one of them all at the moment. It was packed full of action and adventure and started right back to where the last book ended before skipping ahead to 3 weeks later.

It was nice to see the couples that had been established, but it was nice to see new ones developed and potentially new ones I would never have thought of Eliza and Razik... I'm looking at you 👀

But I honestly loved the fact that we got Cyrus pov and was nice to have in the addition of the book. It was great to see his thoughts and feelings even though I just wanted to give him a huge hug at times. It was nice to see him potentially having someone there for him but broke my heart multiple times. I am going to be rooting for him so much in the next book. I just hope he is okay.

It was a super addicting and fun read and I can not wait to read the novella and to finish the series. Let's hope everyone is okay at the end 🥲
