I would normally wait for the whole volume to come out, but that’s happening next year (I hope), and this was available and I couldn’t resist. I feel the story just gets better with each new release. If there’s one series I wish was completed, it’s this one.

3.5 ⭐️

Stayed up until 3AM for this to release on kindle, very convinced we'd get some more Nichoji relationship development, but most of it was in the snippets Pacat dropped before the pub date. I think I'm going to be on my deathbed before they become canon because WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE NEXT CHAPTER IS DROPPING 2025?? I love these cuties so much, but that long for their next 'appointment'... I'm sick. I'll be surviving off of crumbs (their handholding panel) for months.

I enjoy every volume of fence almost no matter what, and this was no exception. While this portion was essentially just a big setup for the beginning of state championships, I adore these characters so much that just seeing them interact with each other is enough for a minimum 3 stars. Sue me. I loved Aiden and Bobby teasing Seiji about his date, and transitioned right into wanting to cry when Robert Coste didn't even acknowledge Nicholas, being so focused on Jesse and Seiji when Nicholas was so eager to make him proud :(

Well.... see you guys next year. Hold strong, fence enjoyers! We're no strangers to waiting ages for the next release.

Before reading

Nicholas & Seiji's reluctant teammate/roommate arc has been going on for eons... I started reading these comics in elementary school, and just finished my first year of university (where I even took fencing classes because of how much I loved this series!)
But the synopsis.... after a million comic volumes and two whole novels, dare we say it's finally happening?? We're finally getting the boyfriends arc????? I will die.

& if we held hands while walking to the fencing state championships together after our “appointment” of getting sundaes & walking along the beach during sunset where you gave me your jacket because I was cold would we still only be just friends?

This cover is incredible, 5 stars for that alone

It will be a miracle if I’m even still alive by the time these two get together but I’m here for the long haul

I love them and I can't wait for my grandchildren to witness Nicholas and Seiji being canon because I don't think I will at this pace. Jokes aside, I missed them so much and I wish we got updates more often, truly.

Pre-read thoughts:

this is actually happening?

It always takes me a little bit to get back into this story because the volumes are released so infrequently. But once I am back in I just LOVE IT.
Also loved that there was some (teeny tiny) progress in the relationship between Nicholas and Seiji in this one <3

I usually wait for the longer segments of this series to be released but I lost the battle with my patience and went ahead and read it. As usual, it's cute and fun and I'm now once again impatiently waiting for the next!

Seiji, you must win your match. Not for the title, but for the post-victory sundae appointment.

I’m begging you please let them be together it’s making me SICK😭 also does Robert not know about Nicholas? Did I miss that part? I really need Seiji and Nicholas to have that appointment asap and for Jesse to back off. Aiden remembers all of Harvard’s exes because he is in love with him how does everyone not see that Aiden is so obvious. And Bobby is trying his very best to be a good manager I love him.

The problem with being caught up is, now you are caught up & you have to wait for 2025 for the next release 😒

Representation: bi & gay mcs, nonbinary or trans MC, nonbinary or trans side character, BIPOC characters

The only reason this isn't getting 5 stars is because these single issues are so short and it feels like an ETERNITY til the next one comes out 🥺🤲🏻🙏🏻🫶🏻

THE NEXT IN 2025???? Also why leave us hanging just as the good parts were about to start? I'm going to die before I get the results of all this edging😭.

Anyways am I delusional or WERE THEY HOLDING HANDS?

“Coach said that winning takes a team. Not just one star fencer.”

The fencing team of Kings Row travels to their greatest challenge yet: the State Championships. Nicholas is determined to prove himself to not just himself and his team, but also his father, the legendary fencer Robert Coste.

This issue was, as all issues of Fence are, awesome and an absolute delight. I love this series with every fibre of my being. I am very excited to get into the State Championships and see all the drama – both fencing-related and personal – that will surely explode during them. On the personal side, I am of course intrigued to learn more about Seiji and Jesse's breakup and what led to this bitterness between them, to see Nicholas perhaps interact with his father for the first time and considering Dante travelled with them to see the tournament, I hope we'll finally get some long overdue Bobby/Dante relationship development. Seiji and Nicholas are slowly making their way toward a more romantic relationship with their constant blushing around each other and their "appointments" but I hope that we'll soon get some more concrete steps towards something more, it's been so long and I want to see all the cuteness to come.

My favorite aspect of this series is the wonderful cast of characters and they were all, as usual, wonderful in this issue. Nicholas was so adorable but also a bit sad in this issue, because being at Exton in the championships means he is not just fencing on his brother's home arena but also that he will have to see his dad in person. It kinda tugs at my heartstrings to see how determined he is to make his dad proud, even though he has no idea Nicholas even exists (at least I don't think he does?). Poor boy. Tanner beaming proudly and declaring how cool their captain is - their captain who KNOWS GIRLS and TALKS TO THEM – was hilarious, and Bobby's determination to aid his friends to victory in any way he can – through superstitions and banners and information – was so cute. He is still my favorite. Also him being canonically a Eurovision fan is everything to me. The team of Kings Row is, as a whole, so wonderful cause they are all such cutie pies, they all have their own insecurities, flaws and strengths and they all know they need to work together to win this thing. I love these kinds of wholesome friendship stories.

I liked seeing a bit more of the "world" of the comic. Yes, it is our real world, but what I mean is that I liked seeing a large gathering of fencing teams and schools all in the same place. We even got to see some girls' fencing teams. I loved how one of the girls was this pretty popular girl called Adrienne, who had a group of younger girls fawning over her, giving her presents and idolising her. She is her school's Aidan. I would love to see Aiden and her meet – the bitch-off would be epic.

I cannot wait for the next issue in this arc, coming 2025! It's too long a wait.
