Chief Norris promptly cancels Andi and George’s vacation and assigns them as lead detectives on the case. Physical evidence leads them to a mental health facility where some of the victims received treatment, but Andi’s geschenk – his usual secret weapon- fails him. Promising leads and shady suspects all turn out to be dead ends, and they’re running out of time. Because the killer isn’t going to stop at twenty-five victims – and Tyler Norris has just gone missing again …

XENIA MELZER was born and raised in a small village in the south of Bavaria. As one of nature’s true chocoholics, she’s always in search of the perfect chocolate experience. So far, she’s had about a dozen truly remarkable ones. Despite having been in close proximity to the mountains all her life, she has never understood why so many people think snow sports are fun. There are neither chocolate nor horses involved and it’s cold by definition, so where’s the sense? She does not like beer either and has never been to the Oktoberfest—no quality chocolate there.

Even though her mind is preoccupied with various stories most of the time, Xenia has managed to get through school and university with surprisingly good grades. Right after school she met her one true love who showed her that reality is capable of producing some truly amazing love stories itself.

While she was having her two children, she started writing down the most persistent stories in her head as a way of relieving mommy-related stress symptoms. As it turned out, the stress relief has now become a source of the same, albeit a positive one.

When she’s not writing, she translates other authors’ manuscripts to German, enjoys riding and running, spending time with her kids, and dancing with her husband.

** 3.75 stars **

This story was better than the previous ones. The working relationship between Andi and George is flourishing. And here the author finally addresses any personal feelings both men might have. And they do. There is no steam but quiet intimacy and acknowledging the feelings that are deep and already there. I liked how it was done. Sweet and unsure.

The case was interesting and presented more than one PNR angle. I liked that everyone had to rely more on police work and investigating rather than the gift that Andi had. There were a couple of good twists. The ending threw a curve ball that made the entire story look a lot more than what it was. I am curious as to how and if the author decides to continue with the series. It has potential especially if both men finally explore what's between them. I liked it.

Probably the best read in the series for me. I can't wait to see where the author is taking our MCs given the massive work-culture shifts and unexpected 'reveals' in the final chapter - 4.5 stars.

Apidae was an interesting addition to the Arthropoda/Andi Hayes series and one that could either be a great launch to a new aspect of the series or a fitting ending to the series. I'm honestly not sure which was it will go, as it does nicely wrap up all the issues from throughout the series so far, but I'd definitely be in line for another book if the author chose to continue.

~

PLOT

There was quite a lot going on here, because it really did put an end to a lot of their issues – Chief Norris, the IA agent tagging along, Andi's progressive abilities and the relationship between Andi and George – but I don't want to go into too much detail because some of those things are intermingled and linked in a way that explaining one would spoil the other.

The plot takes place a few weeks or months after Book 2. I re-read Book 2 before delving into this one, but the time gap isn't exactly clear in my head, but it was enough time that their experiments with the geschenk had grown but Andi hadn't fully recovered from the triple murder of Book 2. Here, George and Andi are starting a vacation from work and trying to find new ways of dealing with the geschenk, which includes meditation, coping techniques and a lot of experimentation. Unfortunately, they just don't have the time to delve into all of that properly before Chief Norris's on goes missing.

The case itself is interesting and a new slant on how and when Andi's gift is useful. They stumble upon a cache of bodies that mark a serial killer's lair, and have to deal with the unexpected addition of a witness who sees ghosts. This adds yet another intriguing layer to the complexities of the case, as well as how Andi tackles solving the case.

~

CHARACTERS

Andi and George are, of course, our main characters and they're both incredibly talented and interesting in their own right. They work well as a team, as support for each other, and their personal relationship also progresses quickly through this book – at least by the series' standard. The book ends with a single kiss exchanged, but huge emotional progress towards being a couple, which has been a long time coming. It still takes 70% of the book for that to happen, though. This series is one of the slowest of slow burns. I do love how they worked hard to get a handle on Andi's geschenk, though. George is so caring and intuitive that his efforts are vital to their growing relationship and personal feelings.

When I started, I was really excited about the idea of the IA agent shadowing George and Andi, but it actually never really materialised into anything – for a good reason I can't explain. However, Luke is a really great character and he has a real impact on the case and Andi's future.

Other characters with a huge impact on the case and plot are:
Geena Davis – an FBI liaison with a military past and connection.
Luke – the IA agent
Tyler – Chief Norris' son, who finds the bodies of the case

I'd love to read more about all three of these characters, in future books, as they all have great potential to be useful, important and show another side to the main characters. Andi is more relaxed with Geena, more open with Tyler, and not so guarded around Luke. George has a steady potential partner in Geena, someone to listen in Luke, and gets to see a new side of Andi when he's around Tyler.

There are other characters who lend a small weight to the case, such as other detectives and beat cops, and many other victims and suspects, but none can/should be mentioned in a review. Some just aren't important enough to count, but others could be spoilers.

~

Was it perfect?
No. And that's not a bad thing. Ever ARC has it's issues, and some are more prominent than others. This one was really good at being plot-clean, though there were some editing issues (e.g. AI agent instead of IA) and little things that niggled.

I also wasn't so keen on the book ending at 92%, when I thought there might be an Epilogue or something. Worse, it ends abruptly quiet early not to tell us about future books in the series, but to give us THREE chapters of another author's book. I know this is the publisher's decision, but it really grates on my last nerve.

After taking until Book 3 for ANY sign of a romantic relationship to appear, it just didn't feel...natural, I guess? It went from realising they were in an emotional relationship without noticing, to let's move in, and then let's take a bath together. It felt rushed, like the author was trying desperately to show some progress towards a relationship without it being physical, and it just didn't feel realistic or natural, especially for the characters. The use of 'lover' also felt off, because they hadn't even shared a mouth-on-mouth kiss by that point, and when they did it was a brief thing that took up two lines of the story and was barely given the importance it required.

In terms of the plot, I felt the case was resolved in a similar way. It was all too convenient that they didn't have a solid suspect, but found the killer in person. Neither George or Andi cared to ask who the killer was after they were caught, because Andi was in such a state, which made sense. But the fact they waited FOUR DAYS to even enquire about the care was strange, since it had taken so much out of them and required such a huge sacrifice. It didn't feel natural for neither to even text someone for information or someone – like Luke or Geena – to stop by the house for a quick update. Four days is a long time to wait for an ID on a serial killer you've been chasing for days on end.
It was also quite convenient how the case was resolved, and how they discovered all the details of how the killer had committed their crimes. I won't spoil it by mentioning how here, but the way it all unravelled felt a bit too convenient and contrived, wrapping up the case in a nice bow. That's not usually how their cases go, so it felt a bit abrupt and anticlimactic.

~

In the end, Apidae was a great addition to the series, and I'll definitely be reading more books involving Andi and George, even if that's a spin-off or as background characters to a new set of main characters in a side series. I love this world and how it's unfolded, but there are still some small issues that need looked at – making the pacing more realistic and natural; exploring the personal relationship between George and Andi in better detail and with more natural pacing; as well as taking a breath when things start moving too fast (or too slow!).

Favourite Quote

“I am here, you know.” Andi muttered with amusement. “And you’re right. You can ask anybody, my social skills are abysmal. I think I can tolerate you, because you’re not an idiot like most other people. Doesn’t mean you get special treatment, though.”
“Just a place in your shriveled heart?” Geena grinned.
“Don’t be greedy. In its vicinity.”

When Detective George Donovan first met Detective Andi Hayes they didn’t get along very well. He made an agreement with Chief Norris of the Charleston PD to report back on Andi’s activities in police work. George went along with it, plus he had plans for more than just staying in Charleston, he was going for bigger and better things elsewhere. Now, a year has gone by and for George and Andi their lives have changed.

For George this vacation is so important for him and Andi to connect. They are both practicing deep meditation, so George can help and even save Andi with his geschenk. When Andi makes that deep connection with the strange world of arthropodas, they pull him so far into their world that he almost fails to make it back to humanity. George has become his comfort zone, anchor, protector and care taker. He’s the only one that knows how and what Andi’s needs are.

George isn’t happy, with the interruption from the IA Luke Gelman. Gelman was useless to an extent, as he couldn’t help George get rid of Chief Norris. Gelman pleads his case with George and Andi when he tells them they are sorely needed. What good is Gelman, is he a friend or foe to them? A fourteen year old boy has gone missing, anyone could have taken the case, why him and Andi. It’s doesn’t sit well with George, especially when he finds out the young teenager is Tyler, the son of Chief Norris.

With Andi’s specialty he makes the discovery of Tyler quickly. As much as he doesn’t care for children, Andi has a feeling about Tyler. Tyler is special and he understands Andi is special too. What Tyler and his special friend Izzy reveal, leads Andi and George to a massive grave beyond proportions.

With the discovery of veterans dog tags it will bring a new interference in FBI Agent Geena Davis. The more revealed about the victims by Dr. Evangeline Melcourt, it leads: George, Andi and Geena to House Cusabo, a mental health facility. As much as George tries to protect Andi, Andi will continue with his geschenk and bees become his focus. But George will fear loosing Andi to the arthropoda and bees. As the case becomes more twisted, with no serial killer in sight the pressure and fear becomes to much for George and Andi. Will Andi finally break when Tyler becomes a victim?

Xenia Melzer delivers another dark themed, twisted, gritty and gory tale from the world of arthropoda and serial killers. The author has done a magnificent job on researching the arthropod world and is very descriptive and precise about so many species of insects. Bees take the focus in “Apidae” and she brings in-depth historical facts about Bees. The author also gives explanations for a variety of drugs used for those who have certain mental issues and how it affects the arthropods.

As far as Andi and George, I couldn’t see their relationship being written any other way, it’s perfect. The relationship between George and Andi progresses in so many ways. It’s so deeply heartfelt and they have a special respect for each other. The more George understands Andi and the loyalty George has towards him, brings some slight changes in Andi’s social skills that surprise everyone. There will be new changes and surprises brought into their secret world.

There’s a great line-up of characters: Danny, who is always fun, teasing his brother George and giving sound advice. Tyler Norris, who brings his specialty and feelings to the story and how he relates to Andi. Izzy, who can now rest peacefully. Chief Norris, husband Aloys, who need to face the fact that Tyler is special and they need to give him the right type of love and understanding.

The Charleston PD crew: IT and expert hacker Shireen, Dr. Evangline Melcourt, Detectives Sandra Mescew and Tobias Gentry and Forard, head of SWAT. Luke Gelman who come with a few surprises and agent Geena Davis, who wasn’t as bad as I thought she would be.

I highly recommend “Apidae", one of the most fantastic and well done novels yet, in the “Arthropoda” series. I suggest starting with the first book: “Arthropoda” and then “Eruca.” I give much praise to Xenia Melzer, for creating a unique paranormal, murder mystery series, with an intriguing subject matter. I don’t know if there will be more to come, but this series is well worth continuing! Would give "Apidae" ten stars if I could!

I am absolutely loving this series! There are really interesting cases with characters to love and hate, clues to pick up or leave behind and always a twist along the way. The relationship between the two MC's, Andi and George, is going well for both of them as decisions are made and their working relationship strengthens.
This book has a story that goes from the kidnapping of the Chief's son to the discovery of several victims of a serial killer. Even though the two are officially on holiday, Andi and George are called in because of Andi's 'skills'. Neither are happy with this as Andi is still recovering from the last intense case they had and they were using this time to help George get more in tune with Andi, helping to keep him more present. The discovery of the bodies leads to several suspects but leads quickly peter out and with Andi not being able to provide much with his gift. Because of the nature of the case, they are joined by someone from the FBI, two other detectives, a member of IA, and two beat officers. It makes for a mixed bag and our MC's are worried about keeping Andi's secret around all of these people so they are attempting to balance what they know from Andi's arthropods and work that into the case with plausible questions and information.
Andi and George continue to grow closer in their friendship as Andi leans more on George both in work and at home. George takes his care of Andi very seriously, ensuring his sleep, food intake and stress levels are more improved than before, giving his mental health a better chance of making it through the case in tact. There is also a step closer in a deeper relationship that I think they both have been falling towards since at least the end of book two. I'm looking forward to seeing how all aspects of their connection strengthens as the series continues.
I really enjoyed all of the characters involved in this book. Things have been tough with the Chief since the beginning but it feels like it could come tumbling down as tensions crank up with the kidnapping of her son and the connection he makes to Andi. The FBI agent who has come to work with the team actually turns out to be pretty great. She's very intelligent, has connections to the FBI and military, and takes everything that happens with Andi in stride which especially endears her to George. I like that we got to see more of the other officers in the precinct and with other departments that Andi has friends in, or as much as he has friendly relations with others.
I am loving this series and cannot wait to hear more from it. There is an excellent twist towards the end that will have an impact on Andi and George in their future and I'm excited to see how that works out for them. I'm also really interested to find out how their relationship develops further as they are the very definition of slow burn. Andi's state of mind and connection to the arthropods is also something that continues to develop and is always the game changer whatever case they end up working on.

This book took things in a direction that I truly wasn’t expecting and I’m still not sure how I feel about it.

By now, the relationship between Andi and George is becoming more complex – so much so, that they are attending the equivalent of a couple’s meditation classes and George has pretty much moved in. And yet, there is still nothing physical between them. Well, initially at least.

This look into the private life of Chief Norris could have gone in so many different directions and I was delighted with where it went. It was nothing at all that I was expecting and yet perfect.

The addition of more people to their ‘team’ was intriguing – after all, so much of what makes them a success in solving crimes is working together and hiding Andi’s secret How were they going to be able to continue doing that when they were working with so many other people?

Once again, the murder mystery was an important part of the story, but ultimately this was about relationships, finding out that you’re not alone, and bringing Andi and George to a larger area. And I was all the way here for it. It’s so difficult to review this book without spoiling things and I appreciate the ability to get into this without knowing too much because it made the impact of the things that happened that much more special.

I am sad that this is the last book in the series so far, but feel really lucky to be able to immerse myself in George and Andi’s world for three books in one go. Really chuffed that I got to read this ARC and can only be pleasantly surprised that Xenia Melzer is managing to make these books more and more special the further along we go.

I received an ARC from GRR.

Andi and George find themselves in the middle of another case. When they are asked to help find a missing boy, they find so much more than just the boy. It seems that there may be a killer to find and they are the one tasked to do so.

The author has created an interesting world where insects share the stage. As George and Andi work to solve the case they also find their bond deepening. The two work well together and it was nice to see the trust that they have in each other. Not only do the main characters have a lot to say but the supporting characters make themselves known as well adding a lot to the story. There is a good mix of emotions and mystery with a bit of the paranormal thrown in. While this is an interesting tale, I found that it did not stand out for me. This is the third book in this series and to truly enjoy and understand the world and its characters you should read the previous books.

If you are squeamish around bugs…be forewarned!

First of all...this is the first book in the series that I've read.
My recommendation is that you read all of the books in the series in order.
My hope is that it will give you a richer experience.

You'll have magic, a serial killer, murder, ghosts, shapeshifting, so many flying and crawling arthropods and insects, (some acting as spies), as well as wonderful characters who will entertain you as you amass clues.

Andi and George are detectives who are determined to rescue a young boy who shares information with them regarding something he's found...and forms a bond with Andi. He helps them in more ways than they can imagine.

I would advise that you read this in a 'bug' free environment!

First things first, this is part of an ongoing series and it helps, for context on the characters and the development of the connection between the main characters, Andi and George, to have read previous books. This story did a nice job showing the progression of that connection, as well as immersing readers once again into a world with plenty of darkness, strange phenomena, arthropoda, and crime (if this doesn’t sound like a fascinating combination, read the books in this series and believe me, it will). The plot is easy to get caught up in, the main characters are easy to care about, and the supporting characters are interesting in a variety of ways. Well worth a read.

This is one of the most unique series I’ve ever read. The premise is so intriguing and the characters so very different. As always the mystery/murder that the MC are trying to solve is intense and drags you in. The investigation always takes unexpected turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I love the interaction between George and Andi they’ve really hit their stride and are working so in sync. FINALLY theres even a hint of romance. This series hasn’t been a slow burn so much as no burn at all up to this point. The only bad thing is based on previous timing we won’t be getting the next book for a year or so 😢

Not sure how I've missed this series about detectives Hayes and Donovan but I'm thrilled to know there are two more books about them for me to read. Also, I had no trouble getting hooked on this series and following along fine by starting with this third book. I loved this twist of Andi's special gift. This one was a real nail biter. Everything seems to be wonderful when they find the kidnap victim but there is an immediate twist and these two are off hunting a serial killer who strikes at their original victim again. I found this one nicely creepy and once I started it I couldn't put it down.

Real partners with connection, care and so much more.  These guys have continued to grow their partnership and love over the course of this series and it is wonderful to experience. Interesting case with some really interesting twists and turns.

This is book three of the Arthropoda series and since this is a continuing story of these MC's, you will want to start at the first book in the series.

I was gifted this book from Gay Romance Reviews and i freely give my honest opinion and review.

I do enjoy these stories, with the mega uniquie viewpoint of the world that Andi has.
I find myself thinking of solutions to a fictional probelm! Go to the cold, live on a metal boat, all sorts of things!!!
George is almost too good to be true and even Norris changes her tune slightly.
A suitably gruesome murder scene, Andi sprialling, more folks on their side than not, a slight change in their personal dynamic - the only bit I felt a tiny let down by was the whodunnit.
Looking forward to the new era now

They are on holiday, a well deserved break from police work. They are about to be called back when the chief inspector son goes missing. They will find the son but they will also find 20 dead bodies. Now they will need to solve a case they had been undiscovered for many years. Will they be able to find enough clues? Will they find the person or people behind it all? Can they save more lives? See just where the case will take you

This is part of a series that should be read in order.
Andi and George are working together well and their personal relationship/feelings is moving slowly but positively in the right direction. I love the slow burn between these two. There is a quiet intimacy between them that is wonderful.

The mystery will keep you turning the pages to discover the truth.
I'm looking forward to more in this series.

The fact that Andi gets his clues from the insects adds an extra dimension to the story. Its unusual and I haven't read it in any other story.
Liking George and Andi together and the way George cares for him. I am so glad they took their relationship to the next level.
Mystery was good as well.
This said it was book 3 of 3, so I am thinking there might not be another story about these 2 as they go onto the next phase of their careers.

What a great continuation

I really like both main characters. They are so great together. I enjoyed the expansion of Andi's gift and how George tries to help. I loved the depth of their relationship which doesn't necessarily present like one in a romantic comedy. The whole thing was very engaging.

I thoroughly enjoyed this *actually* a slow burn romance story. There was one part that stood out in this that was strange - Andi's gift has never really had excessive colour description until this book, about halfway through now it does, which i found weird. Unlike the last book this wasn't a mystery you could solve before it was revealed.

The concept with the paranormal of the book and series is unique and interesting. The writing was just too formal, stiff and unnatural feeling.
