Two centuries after the fall, humanity clings to survival, bound to the drug Nexis—a miracle pharmaceutical that unlocks latent powers known as Origins. But when children are born with Nexis in their bloodstream, they become Naturals, feared and resented by the Nexis-dependent majority, Users. Times are changing as old prejudices rise, threatening to tear the fragile remnants of society apart.
When Faero’s family is murdered, a shadowy group—hired by his father—rescues him from the brink of death. Thrust into a world of violence and secrets, Faero struggles to trust his saviors and come to terms with the he’s a Natural. As whispers of revolution grow and Naturals fight back against oppression, Faero is caught between survival, the search for his place in a fractured world, and the weight of his own identity.
As dark conspiracies come to light and the streets erupt in chaos, Faero must will he rise to accept who he is and fight for a better future, or will society’s fear destroy him and his kind?
In a world where being different is a death sentence, what would you sacrifice to survive—and to be free?
Absolutely Cinema Worthy!!!! You NEED to read this!!!!
It took me a very long time to come up with the words to describe what this book made me feel. I consider myself a VERY harsh critic of most media I consume, and this book while I initially thought I'd rate it lower, the more I thought about it the more I was inclined to rate it 5 stars, in reality if I could give this a 4.5, I would. I will try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible.
Now on to the review itself, this story is absolutely incredible. It starts off throwing punches and it never quite slows down from there. All the pacing was masterfully done, even during the "slow parts" it never felt slow. I always found myself turning page by page, chapter by chapter, falling deeper into the rabbit hole that is the world this author created.
All the characters and I mean ALL of them (and in this book there are MANY) are written so beautifully I found myself cheering and rooting for their triumphs multiple times. I was always so heartbroken to see my favorite characters fall when they did. The back stories NC has given them makes these characters feel genuine, just like real people.
The characteristics, strengths, and flaws of all of the characters are layered and carefully peeled back piece by piece as the story progresses. And when I tell you this is a massive story, I mean this is a MASSIVE STORY. However, NC did a splendid job of not only setting the tone and direction of the story, but also did so while never losing track of what made this story so worth reading, the characters. I didn't finish the story feeling like I didn't know some characters and the entire pieces to the puzzle just fit naturally. Nothing felt like it happened for the sake of plot, or for the sake of it happening, everything felt and read like it happened because of the characters I've fallen in absolute love with.
In particular I really, really enjoyed Leo and Ekiya as characters (and they're not even the main characters!!!) but I won't say why as that'd be spoilers. I would definitely recommend the book just for those two characters alone. And even if they're not your cup of tea, there is plenty for everyone to like and latch on to here.
It's hard to describe just exactly how I would explain this book or story to someone. It's part scifi, part dystopian, part romance, part fantasy, horror, and much, MUCH more, yet it never feels overly bogged down or like it ever loses its tone due to clashing genres. This story tackles some very dark themes and pulls absolutely no punches when doing so, it thrusts you into a world through the eyes of multiple flawed people who all have different motivations and dreams, some of them with dreams so grandiose, as a reader, I know they won't achieve them. But the character is just so well written I can't help but cheer for them, and even start to think that maybe, just maybe, they will achieve their grandiose dreams.
There isn't much more I can honestly say about this book as it's left me with so many different emotions that are all so difficult to process, but I will say, YOU NEED TO READ THIS. This is a story of flawed characters in a flawed world that tackles adverse themes and topics. A must read for anyone who enjoys scifi, or even just good storytelling in general. However this story is dark and covers some sensitive topics, I would probably say the book is mainly aimed at an older audience like 14+.
Pick this up and read it, you will never regret it. It is the best book I've read in a long time and far surpassed every expectation I had for it. If this was a show or a movie I absolutely KNOW it would be one of, if not the most popular film/show. Do yourself a favor and just read this.
I absolutely cannot wait to see what else comes from this world and excitedly look forward to reading the continuation of this book.
