Alain Badiou

Alain Badiou was a student at the École Normale Supérieure in the 1950s. He taught at the University of Paris VIII (Vincennes-Saint Denis) from 1969 until 1999, when he returned to ENS as the Chair of the philosophy department. He continues to teach a popular seminar at the Collège International de Philosophie, on topics ranging from the great 'antiphilosophers' (Saint-Paul, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Lacan) to the major conceptual innovations of the twentieth century. CRITIQUE:
The Brilliance of a Meditation on a Non-Colour
This isn't the first book dedicated by a philosopher/writer to a particular colour (or in this case, a non-colour) that I've read. But it is by far the better of the two.
The first was William H. Gass's "On Being Blue", which, despite its misleading title, wasn't really about melancholy, sadness, depression or tristesse (unfortunately). Nor can plants, animals or inanimate objects "be blue" in any sense other than colour, which limits the scope of the metaphor in the title.
Gass wrote himself into a corner, from which he focused almost singularly on the connotation of explicit sex in literature and film (which is more suggestive of "doing blue" than "being blue").
Badiou is much more concerned with the many connotations of the (non-)colour.
He writes, almost extemporaneously, about the black dog of depression and despair, the black flag of anarchism, black shells, black fur, black clothing, black humour, black holes, dark matter, the darkness of midnight, the darkness of ignorance, the dark continent, and dark skin.
That said, you might have appreciated that he tends to use the words "black" and "darkness" interchangeably. Still, Badiou admits that darkness is a property of something that is "too dimly illuminated."
Black ends up being both an absence of colour, and an absence of light.
Paradoxically, Badiou's book is both brilliant and illuminating.
Against Hierarchical Colour-Coding
In the final chapter, Badiou reprises Jean Genet's questions: "What [exactly] is a Black? [And] first of all what colour is he?"
It's implicit in these questions and in Badiou's appropriation of them, that black is something more than a (non-)colour. It has become the method for white people to describe another type of human being. Whites have undertaken "a hierarchical colour-coding of all of humanity", which consists of:
1. White colonial conquerors (at the top, of course);
2. Yellows, who are "very inferior, but more complicated, inscrutable, tenacious, and difficult to control" (they obviously give rise to a quandary for whites);
3. Redskins (little more needs to be said, because the whites have almost exterminated them); and
4. Blacks (all the way [down], at the bottom).
Badiou describes this colour-coding as "an invention of white people", which assessment applies equally to the connotations of the word "black".
He concludes that:
In effect, notwithstanding its conversational tone, this meditation on a non-colour is a brief but powerful argument for the equality of colours.

"We need to beware of any symbolization, collective assessment, political venture, or overall judgment that would purport to include a colour, of any kind, in its system.
"In the universal order to which humanity aspires, neither white nor black has the slightest right to exist. Humanity, as such, is colourless."
In effect, notwithstanding its conversational tone, this meditation on a non-colour is a brief but powerful argument for the equality of colours.

به آنی فهمیدم برای نوشتن چند خطی در بارهی این کتاب باید آن را ببندم، سعی کنم به خاطر بیاورم، فکر کنم و سپس دوباره بخوانم... پس تصمیم این شد: به جای نوشتن چیزی، به امتیازم یک ستاره ( یک سفیدی درخشان بر زمینهای سیاه؟؟؟) اضافه کنم.
و البته اینکه
بین ستاره دادن من و نظر همکارم که حین تورق سریعِ کتاب با لبخند گفت: خوشگل نوشته
چه فرقی هست ؟
شاید هیچ.
به هر حال یک ستاره بیشتر، به پاس اینکه کتاب در من هنوز تمام نشده است.

So fabulously french! Even a footnote that says 'this is an untranslatable French pun'!
This is all about the colour black in all its forms - paintings, poetry, mourning, animals, symbolism, personal stories and ending with race. Kind of like Maggie Nelson's Bluets, but y'kno, about black and written by an older French guy.
A way easier read than I imagined - I got it from the philosophy section guys!

❞ لا شك في أن الأسود لون الحداد في ثقافتنا. وقد أتيت على ذكر وظائفه الجهنمية والمميتة جميعها: إذ ينظر إليه بوصفه غياباً للنور، وانطفاءً للحياة، وعدم نقاء أصلي. وخلف التوابيت المغطاة بالأقمشة السوداء، تمشي بهوادة حشود المعزّين المتّشحة بالسواد، الذين يُفتَرض أن ليس في أذهانهم سوى الخواطر السوداء، وتأمّلات حول قصر حياة أحبابهم وموتهم الحتمي. ❝
الحقيقة أن علاقتي باللون الأسود بدأت في طفولتي؛ فقد كنت أحب هذا اللون وأرتديه طوال الوقت، مما كان يضعني في مأزق دائم مع جدتي. لم يكن يمر يوم دون صراع بيني وبينها حول اللون الأسود، إذ كانت ترى فيه رمزًا للتشاؤم ودلالة على الموت!

اسم کتاب بنظرم جذاب اومد و اولین کتابی بود که از آلن بدیو میخوندم.
یک بخشی هایی از کتاب جالب و خواندنی بود بخصوص بخش پایانی کتاب اما در بخش های ابتدایی کتاب کلام نویسنده برام قابل درک نبود!

Bien que ce livre propose quelques intuitions intéressantes sur la couleur noire, je ne peux m'empêcher de me demander pourquoi Alain Badiou l'a écrit, dans la mesure où Michel Pastoureau a déjà consacré un ouvrage beaucoup plus riche et complet sur la question.

This is a weird and wonderful little book. Nothing groundbreaking, but an enjoyable experiment in playing around with a word/ concept. Linguistic acrobatics let Badiou link the concept of the colour with everything from childhood sexual shame to dark humour, with military anecdotes and allusions to racism in between. The slightly stilted philosophical prose feels a bit grandiose compared with a lot of the content, which feel thinly spread at times. But letting the ideas wash over you, is all in all an enjoyable - and often entertaining - experience.

أنهيته وأنا أشعر بخيبة أمل، تطلعت لرؤية تلك التعمق المذكور في الغلاف الخلفي للكتاب لكني لم أرى إلا ترهات وبديهيات، وطرحت اسئلة حول شخصية الكاتب هل الفيلسوف من محبي الفيتيشية ومحبي شعر العانة والأبط؟ لأنها أعادها في مواضع عدة بعد الانتهاء من "جنسانية مبكرة" ؟ الفصل الأول أين الفلسفة ولون الأسود في قصصك وخواطرك أيام الطفولة؟ نعم لا أنكر تعرفت على الرسام سولاج وعدة مسرحيات، والخطأ في وصف الثقب الأسود بهذا الاسم.

A memoir-like rumination on the subject of black. As it's written by a French philosopher, it has lots of references that went over my head as an American. Still, to me, the book served as a fun thought experiment that visits subjects such as black in the animal kingdom, black in art, and black in human society.

Badiou is a delight to read. His style is playful and excellent. This little book makes for an entertaining survey of what parts black has and does play in our collective psyche. It engages with some sensitive concepts like purity, race, and sexuality, and although some of it seems dated, I think if you keep his project in mind, most everything he says makes sense.

How amusing. A lukewarm treatise on the subject of anti-Black racism. Certainly an important topic and handled through superb prose. While Badiou is leaps and bounds away from "can't we all just get along", there's not much offered here by way of anti-racist action, only vision.

هذه المرة الاولى التي اقرأ فيها كتاب يتحدث فقط عن لون واحد. يهتم الكاتب بالدلالات المعنية للون الاسود او مايسميه اللا لون. يكتب بارتجالية مقالات قصيرة عن الفوضوية للعلم الاسود مثلا، ويتحدث عن الاكتئاب والارتباط الوثيق للون بالحزن والشر ومصطلحات اخرى مثل الثقب الاسود والفكاهة السوداء فيصبح الاسود غيابا للون وغيابا للضوء ايضا.
في اخر الكتاب يتسائل الكاتب عن الاسود ويتحدث عن البشرة السوداء، وظلام الجهل، حيث جعلوه البشر ترميزا عنصريا وهرميا)
استكشاف جميل للون الاسود في مختلف جوانب الحياة يثبت لنا قدرة الانسان على التأمل في كل شيء. كتاب صغير وغريب ليس ثوريا بل يمكن قراءته/ استيعابه في جلسة واحدة، وهو اشبه بتحقيق فلسفي عن ال لا لون الغير موجود (الأسود).

Nice study in color. Pairs well with Goethe's Theory of Colors (I read some excerpts), Wittgenstein's Remarks on Color, and Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Surprisingly not racist.
