"The most sumptuous cookbook I’ve ever encountered…. Savor this book with your sweetheart, and take yourself out on your own date: Hot Date! is a joy.”—The Paris Review
The first comprehensive cookbook on an ancient superfood and the cultures that revere it. Mesmerizing and art-packed, Hot Date! features 99 mouthwatering, date-centered recipes that are the perfect mix of traditional favorites and inspired new creations. This is not simply a cookbook about dates. It is a love song, a celebration of food and culture from a global perspective. Every page is a surprise in this highly colorful volume, with recipes ranging from Brooklyn to Babylon.
Author Rawaan Alkhatib draws inspiration from her Middle Eastern and Indian cooking background to bring a unique perspective to her topic. As a global citizen who has lived and traveled worldwide, she explores both the significance of the fruit and its chameleon-like characteristics in cooking—divided into six chapters, Hot Date! features recipes that are big on flavor and low on fuss, ranging from Party Food (stuffed dates of all kinds!) to Breakfast; Mains; Soups, Salads & Sides; Sweets; and Drinks & Condiments (the Date Chili Crisp is a life changer). Informative sidebars that read like a scrapbook, how-to content, timelines, and historical snippets feature Rawaan's watercolor illustrations, patterns, and elegant hand-lettering, exploring such topics as: Date-growing cultures, history, and visits to date farms in Palm Springs, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt The evolution of the classic Palm Springs date shake How date palms are pollinated (entirely by hand, to this day—millions of them!) How to stuff dates Dates at different stages of ripeness Shopping and sourcing suggestions Extensive suggestions for more reading to enter the world of the date Hot Date! is doing away with the Western practice of viewing dates as a sugar-free substitute and instead gives the fruit the platform and profile it deserves: an entire book filled to the brim with praise, knowledge, and delicious recipes for date novices and connoisseurs alike.
UNIQUE COOKBOOK: The first of its kind published in the United States, this beautiful book centers on a global food known for its versatility, flavor, and nutritional heft. There are no other definitive cookbooks or guides to dates published in English that share recipes, explore the fruit’s history, and feature 3,000 (and counting) varieties of dates.
INTERWOVEN STORYTELLING: Hot Date! is rich with stories, poems, and imagery from the Arab world, including visits to date-rich oases throughout the Middle East and Africa, as well as Palm Springs, California.
BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED GIFT BOOK: Much more than a typical recipe book, this volume brims with photos, illustrations, and irresistible details like its fuchsia-dyed page edges, which make you feel like you’re entering a fantasy world. It is as much a cookbook as an artistic object and makes a perfect gift for home cooks, readers interested in the fruit, anyone with an interest in or ties to the Middle East, and those drawn to the colorful art.
CANDY BAR DATES & SO MUCH MORE: Dates date back 7,000 years and are at the core of many cultures' cuisines. This fruit has spanned generations, from the centuries-old love of their nutritional superpowers to the viral sensation of Date “Snickers” bars with over 1.3 billion views on TikTok. Hot Date! is for everyone from established date lovers to those looking to experiment with big flavors and textures, and anyone who savors stunning coffee table books featuring rich art and vivid details. Perfect for: Date lovers Home cooks of all ages Anyone interested in Middle Eastern-inspired cooking Whole food-oriented cooks seeking flavor-rich recipes Anyone looking to switch up the menu for an Iftar gathering Gift-giving to food lovers, cookbook enthusiasts, and art book collectors
Dates have been a source of sustenance and delight for centuries, and this cookbook celebrates them with a multitude of recipes and gorgeous full-color journaling spreads. The recipes are incredibly diverse, most Middle Eastern in influence. Dates are utilized in various forms, from plain pitted to date sugar to date butter and more. A guide to different major varieties begins the book, including an explanation of varying stages of ripeness. All kinds of dishes are described, including appetizers, sides, main dishes, drinks, and desserts. I loved the tone of the book. It’s not formal at all, but friendly and conversational.
Then there is the graphic design. Now, I read this as an ebook, but I can imagine it would be even prettier in printed form. Illustrations dance from page to page, vivid, packed with handwritten verses and old recipes. This would make for a beautiful coffee table book.
This book is about exploration. It's about venturing beyond your comfort zone and discovering the incredible versatility of dates. And that means you're going to encounter some ingredients you might not find in your average grocery store. Think of it as a culinary treasure hunt! Yes, you might need to make a trip to a specialty shop, or perhaps click "add to cart" a few times on your favorite online purveyor of fine foods. But that's part of the adventure! Sourcing these unique ingredients isn't just a chore; it's an opportunity to expand your culinary horizons and discover new flavors. It's a chance to connect with the global tapestry of food and appreciate the diverse ingredients that make date-based cuisine so exciting. So, embrace the challenge, put on your explorer's hat, and get ready to embark on a delicious journey of ingredient discovery.
Alkhatib understands that venturing into the world of date-centric cuisine might involve encountering some unfamiliar ingredients. That's why she's thoughtfully included an entire chapter dedicated to getting acquainted with the more specialized items you'll find throughout the book. Think of it as your handy glossary, a culinary Rosetta Stone that decodes the mysteries of ingredients like medjool dates (obviously!), barberries, or rosewater. So, if you stumble upon a recipe like the Bulgur Majadarra and find yourself wondering, "What on earth is that?", you can simply flip to this helpful chapter and quickly get up to speed. It's a brilliant way to demystify the ingredients and make the recipes feel less intimidating.
Alkhatib goes above and beyond by not only educating us on the many fascinating varietals of dates, but also providing valuable guidance on where to find them. She understands that sourcing these ingredients can sometimes be a challenge, so she thoughtfully includes a list of recommended suppliers. It's a huge help, especially for those of us who don't live near a bustling Middle Eastern market or a well-stocked specialty food store. She essentially gives you a roadmap to date-sourcing success, taking the guesswork out of the equation. I was fortunate that my local ShopRite had all the dates I needed. If you aren't as lucky, she provides a list of date specific suppliers on page 260.
But, let's be clear: you absolutely do not have to shop from Alkhatib's recommended suppliers to enjoy the recipes in Hot Date! Most of the ingredients, even the more specialized ones, can likely be found at well-stocked grocery stores, specialty shops, or online retailers. However, if you can shop from her curated list, I highly recommend it. It's like getting a peek under the hood of a professional chef's kitchen. These are the suppliers she trusts, the sources she relies on for the highest quality ingredients. It's a rare and valuable glimpse into the world of a culinary expert, and it's an opportunity to experience the same ingredients that Alkhatib uses in her own cooking. Think of it as a masterclass in ingredient sourcing, a chance to elevate your dishes with the very best the culinary world has to offer. It's not essential, but it's definitely a treat.

Why I Love it/Like It/Pass on It/Avoid It: Overall, I'm incredibly enthusiastic about Hot Date! It's a delightful and inspiring cookbook that has opened my eyes to the incredible versatility of dates. Alkhatib's passion for this ingredient shines through in every recipe, and her writing is warm, engaging, and informative. The book is beautifully photographed, and illustrated making each dish look as enticing as it tastes. While the ingredient list can be a bit daunting at times, the payoff is well worth the effort. The recipes are generally well-written and easy to follow, and the inclusion of a helpful ingredient glossary is a huge plus. It's a cookbook that encourages exploration and experimentation, inviting you to discover new flavors and expand your culinary horizons.
While some recipes could benefit from a bit more "oomph" (look at my feedback on the recipes I have tried for more context), the vast majority are delicious and satisfying. The book's organization makes it easy to find what you're looking for, and the detailed information on date varietals and sourcing is invaluable. It's a cookbook that I know I'll be cooking from for years to come, and I can't wait to continue exploring its pages and discovering new date-infused delights. If you're looking for a cookbook that's both informative and inspiring, one that will introduce you to a world of flavor you never knew existed, then Hot Date! is a must-have for your collection. It's a celebration of dates, a culinary adventure, and a testament to the power of a single ingredient to transform the way we cook and eat.
Overall, I would rank Hot Date! as a 2) Solid Swallow. Hot Date! is a solid choice for adventurous eaters and those who enjoy a touch of earthy sweetness in their meals. If you're someone who likes to experiment in the kitchen and explore new flavor profiles, this cookbook offers a wealth of inspiration. The focus on dates provides a unique lens through which to view both familiar and unfamiliar dishes. The earthy sweetness of dates adds a subtle complexity that can elevate everyday meals and create truly memorable culinary experiences. It's a good pick for cooks who are willing to source some potentially new ingredients and are looking for a fresh perspective on a versatile ingredient. While it might not be an essential cookbook for every kitchen shelf, it's definitely worth exploring. At the very least, borrow it from a friend or snag it from the library. It's a culinary journey that's sure to spark some new ideas and broaden your appreciation for the humble date
Recipes that wowed or grossed me out:
Bulgur Majudarra The Bulgur Majauarra was my first foray into the main dishes of Hot Date!, and it was a delightful surprise. I initially raised an eyebrow at the seemingly simple seasoning of just cumin, but Alkhatib proved me wrong. This dish is a testament to the power of a few well-chosen ingredients. The sweetness of the dates, the savory depth of the caramelized onions (which, admittedly, took me nearly 40 minutes to achieve that perfect golden-brown hue – keep a close eye on those onions!), the earthy warmth of the cumin, and the hearty texture of the bulgur come together in a harmonious blend of flavors that truly impressed me. This recipe makes a lot of food – easily enough for four people. It's surprisingly easy to prepare, just be sure to give those onions the attention they deserve. I was surprised that cumin was the only seasoning, but it works incredibly well, tying together the earthy nuttiness of the lentils and bulgur and adding a bright pop of flavor. The arugula added a refreshing element, though the texture felt a little out of place; it's good with or without it.
And the dates? They're the star of the show. That perfect bite – lentils, bulgur, onion, and date – is truly something special. The sweet and savory combination just works. However, the proportions as written don't quite deliver that perfect bite often enough. Increasing the onion and date quantities would make this dish truly exceptional, but I can also see how that would increase the cost, especially with the dates. My solution? I'll likely reduce the amount of lentils and bulgur in future iterations and serve this as a side dish instead of a main course. That would be incredible. One thing to note: you might have a bit of a treasure hunt on your hands trying to find the bulgur. It was available at my local grocery store, but it took some searching. Be prepared to explore the aisles a bit!

Main Ingredients 🥚 Onion Bulgur Lentils Arugula Dates
This is a dish I would absolutely make again. It's relatively easy to prepare, it's packed with flavor, and it's a great way to introduce friends to the magic of date-based cuisine. It's perfect for a casual weeknight dinner, a potluck gathering, or any occasion where you want to share something a little different and a lot delicious. I can already picture serving this to friends, watching their faces light up with surprise at the unexpected flavor combinations. It's a crowd-pleaser, a conversation starter, and a delicious way to showcase the versatility of dates.
Moroccan Breakfast Smoothies The Moroccan Breakfast Smoothies were a revelation. Almond-forward, creamy, and perfectly sweet, they're a delightful way to kickstart the day. I didn't even know I could eat two avocados in one sitting, but this smoothie proved me wrong – and I enjoyed every single bite. It's a surprisingly satisfying breakfast, but it isn't meant to be chugged. Its decand enough that eating this too quickly may not be enjoyable, but eaten slowly I think it shines as a morning pick-me-up. But my mind is far from breakfast as it is already racing with dessert possibilities. I'm not quite sure what form it will take, but I know this smoothie has dessert potential, and when I unlock that secret, it's game over.
Seriously, this Moroccan Avocado Smoothie recipe from Hot Date! is a must-try. It's quick, easy (just chop some dates and avocados, then blend!), and a fantastic way to use up those avocados that are just begging to be eaten. Think of it as a thick, creamy, almond-infused breakfast treat. The level of sweetness is spot-on, and as I mentioned, my brain is buzzing with dessert ideas. This one got me so excited to keep exploring Hot Date! after these two successful recipes. My expectations are officially high for the rest of the cookbook.

Double Ginger Carrot Soup The Double Ginger Carrot Soup from Hot Date! paired with a date grilled cheese? Immense. Absolutely immaculate. This is a culinary power couple, a symphony of flavors that just works. The soup itself is incredibly easy to throw together, surprisingly filling, and delivers a complex savory experience that belies its simplicity. It's got that deeply earthy, smooth, and undeniably carrot-forward taste that's both comforting and satisfying. On its own, it's good. But with a few additions – a sprinkle of seeds for crunch, a dollop of yogurt for tang, a scattering of cilantro for freshness – it elevates to very good.

But the real magic happens when you introduce the Date & Kashkaval Grilled Cheese. Dipping that sweet, cheesy goodness into the savory soup? That's where the "awesome" kicks in. The sweetness from the grilled cheese cuts through the earthiness of the soup, creating a delightful contrast that's both unexpected and utterly delicious. It's a textural and flavor experience that I'm completely hooked on. I'm a sucker for this pairing. It's the kind of meal that makes you feel like you've created something truly special, even though it's deceptively simple to prepare.

I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This cookbook (though it is much more than just a book of recipes) was so fun and informational. If you ever wonder about dates this book has it. History, cultural significance, flavor pairings, life cycle of the plant, varieties of date, and of course recipes. All of that and more paired with stunning, whimsical watercolor illustration. While this book is pretty niche, it was also very thorough and educational. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the ancient recipes. I may not have been a date enthusiast before this book but I am now!
I recently received a copy of Hot Date! by Rawaan Aikhatib. This is an unusual choice for a cookbook, but I am very fond of eating dates. There is always a bag in my closet ready for me when I crave something sweet.
Rawaan Alkhatib’s "Hot Date! Cookbook" is a delightful culinary exploration of the humble date. From the moment I flipped through the pages, I was struck by the vibrant photography and beautifully designed layout that invites readers on a flavorful journey. Alkhatib does an exceptional job of celebrating the date, transforming this often-overlooked ingredient into the show's star. The cookbook is well-structured and offers a variety of dishes, from savory appetizers to delicious desserts.
Whether you’re a novice in the kitchen or a seasoned chef, the step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, making it a joy to cook from.
One of the standout aspects of "Hot Date!" is its variety of dishes. Alkhatib quickly illustrates how versatile dates can be. Each recipe bursts with flavor and originality, showcasing Algerian and Middle Eastern influences while maintaining an approachable and contemporary feel.
Alkhatib also intertwines personal anecdotes and cultural narratives throughout the book, creating a connection between the recipes and her journey. This storytelling aspect makes the cookbook not just a collection of recipes but a memoir that offers insight into the significance of food in building relationships and sharing love.
Furthermore, the emphasis on health and nutrition is commendable—dates are celebrated not just for their sweet flavor but also for their natural health benefits. The cookbook encourages readers to incorporate wholesome ingredients and emphasizes nutritional value without sacrificing taste.
In conclusion, "Hot Date!" by Rawaan Alkhatib would make a unique addition to any home cook’s library. It's a testament to the beauty of simple ingredients and the power of cooking to bring people together. I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone looking to add a touch of creativity and warmth to their culinary repertoire.
I'm that person who came into this saying "I like a date. I wonder what else I can do with it?" and left knowing that there are many different kinds of dates, there's an entire best way to store them, and an endless way to prepare them. My mind is honestly blown and this cookbook really enlightened my world to an entire new way to eat food that includes dates. A Date Shake? Come on, now. How incredible is that?!
The first recipe I tried was the Tater Tots Tossed in Hot Date! Butter and my entire life is changed. There's a before and there's an after. Anyone who met me before I tried this recipe-I'm sorry you didn't meet the best me. And for anyone who meets me going forward- you're welcome for stuffing these tots into your mouth because your life will also be changed for the better. Even the kids liked this one. It's a new staple in our house and I don't see it going away anytime soon. The popcorn suggestion is our next venture!
The other stand out recipe for me was the Dibs Barbecue Sauce. It's dangerous- if you put that on your table it will be gone in five minutes and a fight will break out because you introduced this amazing sauce that disappeared too quickly. Make a double batch.
As with all cookbooks, I do wish there had been more pictures of the prepared food. While I am an experienced home cook, sometimes I just need a picture to know that what I am doing is on the right track, especially when trying something new. There were a few recipes where I felt lost without a picture. That being said, the artwork in this book is beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen artwork in a cookbook that left me with existential questions as to who I am holding this delicious food.
This is a great cookbook for anyone, especially someone who wants to incorporate dates into their routine meals.
For some reason as I child I did not like dates - perhaps the texture didn't appeal, or perhaps I had only tried some really dry and crumbly ones. In the past decade or so I discovered the many varieties and flavors of dates (Barhi is currently my favorite) via my farmers market . I've also recently learned about their health benefits and started using date syrup in beverages and I want to try using date sugar in baking, so I'm super excited to find this book! The photos and illustrations are beautiful. I love that this book has such a range of recipes not only for different meals of the day but also different cultural influences and flavor profiles. Some recipes that caught my eye include: date and tahini granola, pumpkin pancakes with warm ras el hanout syrup, Moroccan avocado smoothies, barbecue mushroom steaks with cornbread crumbles, lamb & pumpkin pasta, yellow Barhi and green apple kale salad, whole roasted pineapple draped in spiced caramel, and spiced date chili crisp. The book also offers suggested menus and recommended retailers for sourcing dates and other ingredients used in the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
This cookbook was so much fun to get into, and I was so appreciative of how much dates can be so delicious and flavorful. I mean, I already love dates as they are but to explore the so many recipes? Heck yeah! And to top it, just learning the varieties (had no idea there were so many), I was in recipe/ingredient learning heaven. I definitely want to explore so many (if not all) pages of this book.
And the photography and just the tone - it was amazing to go through. I was in such awe throughout this work. Never truly thought to make savory dishes with dates but here I am noting a good amount of recipes. Marked a good amount for sweets as well to try for sure.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Fun and fresh ideas in a great layout. Loved the illustrations and found them easy to read. Informative section on varietals of dates and the ripening process including stages of ripeness. Good to learn about so many varieties of dates and their flavor profiles, I had no idea. My one gripe would be there weren’t enough photographs of the dishes. I prefer that cookbooks have a photo of most if not all of the recipes included. It really helps readers to figure out what to make. Also it would have been nice if there were more non meat options but there are at least a few of those. Nice that not every baking recipe included used eggs.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the advance copy of this book!
Dates are a deeply underrated fruit that deserve to be adored, and this cookbook does a beautiful job of putting the date on a pedestal. I learned so much through this book, because I had no idea that there were so many varieties of dates. There are tons of creative recipes in here that I'm really eager to try - Halwa-Stuffed French Toast?! Sign me up.
The illustrations and photography in this cookbook are so beautiful and make the cookbook a worthwhile addition to your collection. I'm absolutely buying a print copy of this cookbook ASAP.
It's a good sign if while you're reading a cookbook, you're constantly taking breaks to search for ingredients because the recipes are so intriguing and look delicious.
From the history, geography, types of dates to the variety of recipes, this is a great cookbook. Beautiful drawings and photography make you hungry just flipping the pages.
Thank you to Netgalley and Chronicle Books for an ARC.
Hot Date focuses on sweet and savory date recipes. The Sections are Party Food; Breakfast; Mains; Soups, Salads & Sides; Sweets; and Drinks & Condiments. The author writes some context about the history and different types of dates before heading into all the recipes. I love the graphic design and how create the recipes were. I am excited to try a lot of the recipes.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I needed a few dates for a recipe and ended up with a rather large tub of them. Who knew this lovely book would show up just at the right moment! So many fantastic recipes that I cannot wait to try. I absolutely love the illustrations... but would appreciate if each recipe had a photo for reference.
I was seduced by the beauty of this cookbook. I also hope I am disciplined enough to try a few recipes. At the very least I could try tater tots dressed in hot date butter.
The poetry is lovely and the artwork is eye catching. Some of the Greco/Roman recipes are wild. Ancient Roman Braised Flamingo...
The most fun I've ever had reading a cookbook! It is beautifully illustrated, structured well (e.g., party food, breakfast, mains, etc.), and as a fan of dates, I was delighted to find out there are so many varieties.
Thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a copy.
What an awesome book! With great photos and illustrations, and in depth descriptions of all the different varieties of dates in the world, I loved this, and am going to buy myself a physical copy!
Thank you Netgalley and Chronicle Books for the ARC!
I had such high hopes for Hot Date!: Sweet & Savory Recipes Celebrating the Date, from Party Food to Everyday Feasts by Rawaan Alkhatib. I love dates and thought this book would be full of healthy Mediterranean recipes and maybe even several vegan ones, too. Unfortunately, most of the recipes contained meat and/or dairy so they won't work for me. One thing I did like though was all the information this book contains about dates. I had no idea there were so many varieties! The illustrations of the different types were very engaging.
Hot Date! is a cookbook in which dates are the main ingredient. It details the different types of dates and various recipes using dates as the main ingredient.
The illustrations were so cute and this book was so educational. I even learned more about the history of where I grew up. The sex life of the date! #iykyk
I received a copy of this eBook from netGalley for a honest review.
I didn't know that there are so many types of dates. Let alone all you can do with them. this cookbook is an eye-opener! I'm interested in trying some of these recipes and loved the poetry and stories throughout the cookbook
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle for an ARC of this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I enjoyed this niche cookbook featuring dates. There was a much wider variety of recipes than I expected. I don't think this is a cookbook I would use for everyday cooking, but it would be fantastic to pull out around the holidays.
The hand drawn artwork is gorgeous, but I would have liked to see more photos of the food too.
I loved all the info it included about the different kinds of dates, and how they are grown. I learned quite a bit! I think this cookbook would be a great gift for someone that does a lot of parties and holiday gatherings.
