The cunning Tim Drake has always been the smartest of Batman’s sons…and the most comfortable matching wits with the most sinister geniuses on Earth. Damian Wayne doesn’t like feeling outsmarted—to him, no smugly-written insult could ever be sharper than his sword—so when he’s forced to infiltrate a super-villain gala alongside the sneaky Red Robin, the biggest danger the two of them face might not be Lex Luthor but Damian’s own temper!

It’s time for the boy wonder to tag alongside Tim Drake aka Red Robin. s we descend back into the abandoned warehouse where the failed robber and hostage have been taken who is telling this story, we get a chance to know our storytellers a bit. This robber didn’t really want to do this, but a bunch of bad turns and without access to opportunities they wish they didn’t need…and now some poor decisions have made them here.
“It’s easy to judge other people’s decisions when you don’t know how few options they have. But for all you know, when push comes to shove, their choices might pleasantly surprise you.”
So now it’s time for a story about that! Damian isn’t too happy to be tagging along with Tim as Tim takes the place for Bruce in a big fancy rich person dinner hosted by the corrupt mayor Cobblepot. Sure Damian was going to go anyway, but he planned on sneaking in. Even worse the thoughts of his grandfather seeing him with a babysitter like Tim brings words of “weakness” to the forefront of Damian’s mind. But it gets even worse once they get inside and Damian gets a look at all the fat cats like Lord, Cale, and Luthor using “charity” as a guide for making themselves richer. Then seeing Tim walk up with big smilies and shake their hands and make deals is enough to make Damian sneak off into the rest of the building. Sure enough this is the tallest building in Gotham, and being owned by Oswald it is aptly bird themed and called the perch, so the chances of finding the demon here are pretty high.
But before Damian storms off to investigate on his own Tim leaves him with some important things to think about. As Tim admits he doesn’t fully understand Damian, he can’t tell he values life and if he would really ever put his life on the line for someone else. He CAN tell Damian fills bad for killing that guy, but canf tell if it’s because he hurt someone or because he was punished for it.
“Those are the hard questions that expose your character. The questions you push down, to distract yourself with seemingly more important things…like finding. Way into the secret room of a tower, hoping to find a demon.”
As such Damian runs off and pulls out his special Wayne branded, never brought to consumers, code breaker…only for it to fail due to a competing signal. Time to play things the old fashioned way…to the air vents!! After climbing around every corner Damian finally found a more secure area in the vents to try and use his special Wayne experimental laser…with the side effect of over heating in enclosed spaces as it tends to heat up quite a lot! Every move is even harder for Damian but finally he breaks through the vents and descends into a secure basement area where he finds something very familiar…a deep green pit of liquid surrounded by the kidnapped people encased and numbered. The film is a trap and suddenly the demon flies above him, only for Tim (now dawning the Red Robin suit) to come on and save him. Last time Damian and Jason were ill equipped, but as Tim reminds him, just like with the air vents, sometimes it’s best to stick with the classics like Bo staffs and batarangs! At this moment Damian is thinking that he was the one to help turn Tim from the side of personal gain to doing what was right. Now I don’t disagree with the idea that it’s never too late to do better, but Damian does let it go to his head that this means he could finally be worthy. Suddenly as the fight continues the demon decides to course correct himself and make it harder by tossing the encasements with the kidnapped people into the green pit. And to my surprise they started disappearing! Tim and Damian work quick to save as many as they can by wrapping them up and preventing them from falling into the pit. That’s also when Tim reveals that they don’t have to worry about the demon escaping as he hacked the systems earlier and locked the doors, aside from that he also used his own investigations to pretend to strike deals and record incriminating evidence to get stuff against the major and his friends. He of course never told Damian because he couldn’t trust him. To be this was a no brainer and I saw it coming a mile away knowing Tim’s way of operating. But I Damian he had no clue that all of this espionage was an act, and is now learning a very important lesson about becoming whah they want you to be to get secrets. But Tim still leaves him with an even more important lesson:
“It’s important to always remember what your values are, so you don’t lose yourself in who they want you to be.”
But this also presents an interesting problem for Damian:
“He don’t it again. Felt so threatened by his brother, he’d assumed the worst of him. He wanted to feel better, worthier than him so badly…he could hear the voice of his mother and grandfather judging him for letting his insecurities drive his choices.”
But then Damian remembers the main lesson, the hard questions they Tim asked him. Can he put his life on the line for someone else? As the issue comes to an end, Damian does just that to prevent Tim from falling into the pit only to fall in himself. Once again while swimming in the pit he sees the image of the man he killed and the debt that is owed because of it. He then crawls from the pit…only to come face to face with his grandfather as mother once again!! Is this simply a trick, or did the pit just teleport him directly to the league of assassins?!

“Do you only feel bad because you got found out? Those are the hard questions that expose your character…”
Another really good issue, not as strong as the previous two but still well done. Damian and Tim Drake go to a charity event hosted by the penguin to investigate some wrong doing. I didn’t quite feel a thread between Damian and Tim like there was with Jason and Dick, I reckon it’s there but more subtle.
damian just wants to do good and be good :((( he’s just a baby :(
i like ba giving damian his internal conflict to actively TRY to be good, constantly tamping down his pride and trying to model his “good” after his parents and brothers. and you see, objectively, he IS good. he’s just not at the believing it part yet.
Not as strong as the first two but still very enjoyable. This time it's Tim and Damien teaming up and I like how different they made each Robin. With Tim focusing on undercover work Bruce does a lot, and hacking skills, Damien understands where he comes from but like Bruce, he puts sometimes even his friends in the dark. Leaving Damien conflicted but also learning. Overall solid!
i love the batboys and how they’re written in this and damian’s relationship with all of them. please just one issue with all of them together is all i’m asking for it’s my only want in life i swear😔
Ahhh I loved the interactions between Tim and Damian. I also really did love getting to see more of the internal conflict that Damian had with himself here. It’s clear he WANTS to be “good” but he struggles with. Like I’ve said before. JUNI PLEASE WRITE FOR DC MORE 😭
loved the panels dedicated to showing their little tools, such a nice touch on a comic run where you can already tell there is so much love for the characters and world
