Mystery… Intrigue… Voodoo… Witches… Ghosts… Vampires… Detective John Newman had done his research on the City of New Orleans, Louisiana, yet nothing would prepare him for what he discovered after moving here. After learning that there was a Paranormal Unit in the police force, he thought he had heard it all. That was, until he found himself partnered up with someone not entirely human.Haunted by her past, Josie seeks out the monster who condemned her soul to hell over a century ago. With the help of her boyfriend, Tyler, who is a Rougarou and on a mission of his own, Josie sets out to seek redemption. What they didn’t expect was to stumble upon a deadly secret, one that goes deeper than either of them envisioned. As Josie and Tyler are targeted because they found out what was happening, she begins to fear that no one around them can be trusted, even Detective John Newman.

I was hired to provide post publication proofreading for this book. Because Ms. Theriot has hired me in the past, she quite likely suspected this review would be written (because I know she's read previous reviews), but it was not part of our agreement. I just like to review every book I read and reading is an integral part of proofreading. If you feel my connection with the book makes my review suspect, so be it, but this is my honest review.

This is the fourth book in the Where Darkness Reigns series, and at this point I've read books 5, 2, and 1 (in that order) as well. I can say with certainty that you absolutely do not have to read these books in the correct order to feel satisfied with each story, although I would still recommend following the book order to avoid spoilers from future books.

This book is very heavy in the paranormal, but that's to be expected because it's mostly about a vampire and a rougarou (which is basically a werewolf I think.) There just wouldn't be much book left if you took out the paranormal, but since I really enjoy books that deal with the paranormal, that was awesome for me.

This book seemed to follow several different story arcs that eventually mostly come together at the end. I had fun trying to figure out how each arc was connected while reading (because I was fairly certain they would be, having read several of Ms. Theriot's books at this point.) There are a few things that I'm not actually sure if they got cleared up because of Ms. Theriot's style, but the major arcs definitely had conclusions of some sort.

Overall I give this book 4 out of 5 stars because it kept me turning pages and gave me something to try and piece together while reading.
