What Great Things

Derek and Shelaine were still newlyweds when they found themselves in the trial of their lives. Derek had been struggling through an illness he contracted while serving as a missionary in Brazil. Doctors ran test after test, and although they were relieved to finally diagnose the cause for his discomfort, they were terrified to discover something much more dangerous in Derek’s system. Derek had leukemia. Derek made friends with other patients in the hospital—many of whom would never recover from their physical battles. Although his wife was hundreds of miles away and could only visit on weekends, he came to rely on her more than ever before. Through month after month of bedridden discomfort and pain, as his body was broken down to almost nothing, Derek embraced the part of himself that mattered most. His faith grew and the relationship he had with Jesus Christ became more intimate. As Derek’s body recovered from the most trying experience of his life, he knew that he wasn’t the same man that he was before his diagnosis. He had a different view on life—a new focus. He became determined to show the world What Great Things God does for His children.
