The Road Trip Agreement

Rate this book
How far would you go to live the life of your dreams? Would you fake-date your total opposite while trapped on a road trip together? A charming, fake-relationship lesbian romance about being bold and taking chances.

A camper van, a camera, and the open road are all laidback Carol Lavoie wants in life—and she’s using her career as a social media video creator to fund her adventures. The problem is, if she can’t work out how to get more followers soon, she’ll have to give it all away.

Minimalist vlogger Ruby Hayashi has over a million followers who watch her meticulously edited takes on cooking, van living, and her cute rescue dog. She exists in a world of perfection that is getting boring and badly needs an injection of fresh energy.

When Coral and Ruby team up for a road trip to boost their audiences, it’s a clash of opposites in what could be the change they both need. As they hit the Oregon coast, what they don’t count on is how their enthralled followers start rooting for their favorite lesbians to get together.

Could faking a relationship for the cameras be the key to going viral and boosting their careers? But even if they make peace with lying to their fans, for how long will their hearts be able to tell the difference between fake flirtation and real love?

Living out of a van while vlogging about the “life” is the unique plot to have Coral and Ruby meet and eventually fall in love. If it were only that simple. Warner infuses family expectations and responsibilities with ironclad contracts, vehicle breakdowns, misunderstandings and a fake online relationship to enhance this fun story.

The writing is pure Warner as she brings us immediately into the filming of Coral’s adventure of the day. From here her storytelling mastery gives you a scenic drive down highway 101 along the rugged coastline of Oregon and Northern California. I have made this same trip back in the 70’s when I was
twenty-three. Three lesbians with two guitars and full camping gear squeezed into a baby blue two door Volkswagen Rabbit. Coral and Ruby may have it easier yet the views and campsites they encounter are as breathtaking as Warner describes.

The push and pull on what is real and what isn’t between Coral and Ruby keeps your attention throughout. The characters reminding themselves of their agreed upon code of conduct was not excessively done, thankfully. The ending has many plot strings to pull together to create the happy ever after bow we all love. This is done rather well with the help of Coral’s sister.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Road Trip Agreement and highly recommend it.

We meet two van lifers - Coral based in Canada and Ruby in the US. Coral is a roving camper, posting videos of her adventures on the road but she's basically scraping by subscriber wise. Ruby posts structured videos showcasing her cooking and simple life with sidekick Calvin her rescue dog. With almost a million followers her life should be set. But both women desperately need to garner more followers for different (and to them compelling) reasons. To cut to the chase, Coral contacts Ruby re a joint venture - a road trip along the West coast should boost both accounts.
Warner's descriptions of Vancouver then the West coast as they drive along brought back memories of my years there. The beauty of terrain, raw power of the ocean. I enjoyed the negotiations between Ruby and Coral and how compromise and acceptance made the trip easier. How true comfort comes from learning about each other. The pressure self-imposed or by family along with a touch of drama then decision to have a "fake" relationship to spice up their adventures for more followers. I learned about influencers, "clicks" and subscribers, earning income from posting videos and the constant need to provide interesting content. All of this plus beautiful descriptions, neatly woven into a road trip romance. Lights, camera, action, post. The attraction is there but beware the road travelled is not without bumps and potholes. Is that cross-border love possible?
I'm not into any social media but decided to take a chance with this book and am I happy I did! Overall, this was an enjoyable, easy read from the author.

3.5⭐️ This is a story about Ruby who has been a blogger for several years driving around Seattle. Her blog features her minimalist van and cooking vegan meals. Corral is a new blogger and needs money and more followers to meet an agreement she made with her parents. She emails Ruby and suggests that they team up for a road trip down the Oregon coast.

I liked this story and both characters. The dog, Calvin, was sweet. And Ruby's mom was a great addition. It was an easy read with low angst and an HEA ending. Also enjoyed reading about all the great state parks they visited and I’d like to take this same road trip.

ARC received from Net Galley for an honest and voluntary review.

The protagonists of this story are two women who travel across the United States and Canada with their trucks, recording and posting their adventures on social media. Both have chosen this as their way of life and at twenty-five both are at a point where they must make a decision, for different reasons.

Ruby has a huge following on the platforms, she offers them her quiet life, cooking vegetarian, with her shelter dog. But she doesn't show her problems: with her mother, with her insecurities, her financial problems.

And the other protagonist, Coral, has a deadline, imposed by her parents. If she does not manage to survive on her publications on social networks before turning 25, for which she lacks a month, she must return the van and consider a more ordinary life, working for them or in another permanent job.

When Coral asks Ruby about a shared road trip, Ruby's first thought is emphatically no, but immediately her van breaks down and she must undertake a repair for which she doesn't have enough savings.

So off to share a road trip they go.

But Coral doesn't show her quiet life to her followers, she shows her adventures in nature, hiking, swimming, kayaking, rope diving, that kind of thing. So different from how Ruby lives, can the two of them match their lifestyle to get more followers, more income, to continue their life choices?

The journey they have taken has been both physical and emotional. They have learned from each other, they have learned to trust each other. It's been a good trip.

Vloggers get together and build up followers by having a fake relationship.... or is it? Slow start, almost thought I wondered into a YA book, but soon morphed into a good read. Worth the initial angst. (My first of this author - whoops, no it wasn't!!)

Confession : I hate camping and vanlife doesn’t attract me at all. Plus Coral and Ruby are respectively 23 and 24 and I don’t really read new adult novel but realized it only after I started reading. Still, It was a good opportunity to get out of my comfort zone. Ruby and Coral are both passionate with traveling and freedom that vanlife can offer, and they are both content creators. Quickly, they realize like each other but stay professional and it was really cute to read. I also liked how being opposite both bring them some balance in their life. It’s only when they realize that their community wants them to be together that they decide to fake their relationship.

They are both pressured to have views and suscribers but that aspect of social media and influencer with sometimes fakeness is not my favorite thing. It took a bit too much place in their story for my taste. That’s why despite Coral and Ruby being really cute, I wish I could feel their passion and feelings a bit more. Nevertheless, this book was cute and easy to read, I just wasn't the right target.

The Road Trip Agreement by Tiana Warner is a lovely romance about two women who both make a living as social media video creators and influencers. I found it to be an enjoyable read, especially since I know very little about this type of career.

The author created two interesting characters in Carol Lavoie and Ruby Hayashi. Both are quite different even though they have similar careers. The chemistry between the two is easy to see. It is fun reading about the two learning to work and live together as they travel through some beautiful settings.

If you enjoy your romances with lots of travel, close quarters, a fake relationship, and a cute dog, this may be the romance for you.

The Road Trip Agreement follows Coral, an adventure van-life content creator and Ruby, a food-specific minimalistic content creator, who both primarily make Youtube videos and post on social media. It's a book full of tropes but with a slight twist - fake dating, road trips, and force proximity. I was mostly impressed with how both characters felt well-developed with believable chemistry. Their feelings and relationship felt like they made sense, even if it is a very cutesy book. I struggled slightly with Coral's relationship with her parents which is wrapped up very easily. At times the book felt like it was fighting to hit a certain length with extra plot points that didn't add anything worthwhile to the story. I didn't think the plot with the other channel going against them was necessary or interesting, and using Coral's sister as a foil to her life choices would've worked better if the sister had any other function as well. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and it's probably somewhere between 3 and 4 stars on my personal ranking.

The Road Trip Agreement is a sweet, slow burn romance with a healthy dose of personal growth and a dash of family drama. Set in the Pacific Northwest, the scenery is lush and vibrant and the chemistry between the leads is palpable. Oh and there’s even an adorable dog who stars as both the comic relief and the ultimate judge of character. (Obviously one must pass the dog test before being deemed trustworthy enough to travel in a van with for a couple of weeks).

This was my first book by the author Tiana Warner, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Her writing is immersive but still easy to digest. She also did a very good job with character building and growth, which can be lacking in a rom-com. I understood why both women had the motivations they did and the 3rd act drama felt natural, as did the resolution.

While I wouldn’t necessarily categorize this as an enemies to lovers or an ice queen romance, Ruby IS a bit of an ice princess. The best part of this book is the journey of Ruby and Coral getting to know and warm up to each other, and ultimately falling in love. It takes them a little while to get there but this book does have some spice and it’s scorching!

Pick this up if you’re looking for a weekend romance read that delivers on the sweet AND spicy! As a bonus you’ll receive a unique insight into the life of a social media content creator, vanlife, and the gorgeous scenery of the Pac NW. 4.5 stars!

The first two chapters set up the plot nicely. I don’t follow any influencers on you tube, to be honest my you tube history is mainly cat and how to videos, and as someone who has always done the 40 hours plus traditional working grind I was a bit defensive at one of the mains dissing it, BUT, you have to admire anyone earning their living doing what they love! That last sentence is what the author has done really well, I immediately see the mains as real people. I maybe don’t have first hand experience of their life, but the writer has painted a picture so well I can see their life.
This story kept me engaged and I read it in one sitting, perhaps the result of a quiet day rather than gripped, but I certainly didn’t put it down and potter off.
A couple of poor decisions by mains, but that added a bit of drama. A comfortable 3, neither rounded up nor down.

Fun way to have a forced proximity romance. Ruby and Coral are vanlife influencers with different focuses. Ruby has almost a million subscribers showcasing her cooking and simplistic living. Even though she is earning money most goes to help her mother and clear medical debt. Coral at 24 is a year younger and has been building her base for almost a year. Her focus is on adventure and natural beauty. Her parents gave her a year to be able to earn a certain dollar amount or she needs to return and work for the family business. Coral in hopes of growing her brand with clicks suggests a combined road trip with the more established Ruby. It comes at the right moment when Ruby’s van is in need of repairs.

Together they set off for a trip showcasing the Oregon coast. Appearing in each others videos it is clear their audiences are seeing or hoping for sparks between the two. Are they willing to fake date to increase viewership? Is it fake dating if there is real attraction? I’ve traveled the Oregon coast more than once and the author highlights the setting well. I could easily imagine camping there. The romance feels realistic. They have differing concerns and goals, slowly share things about themselves. They are still in their younger twenties so the ending feels more like a potential HEA but I was happy to journey with them.

Thank you to NetGalley and Ylva Publishing for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.

Tiana Warner is a new-to-me author and I'll definitely give more of her work a read.

I liked the premise of the book and the writing was good. I have to confess that I spent way more time than I should have looking into van life and watching van videos.

I think the thing that held me back from a higher rating was that I had a tough time connecting to the characters and the way the family things were resolved just seemed to be superficial and too quick and easy. I do appreciate that it wasn't an insta-love situation.

If you're looking for some adventure and a super cute doggie, and some low-key drama and angst, you'll probably enjoy The Road Trip Agreement.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to discover a new author.

Its a light, sweet, and fun read. Not so much drama but very slowburn, which is kind of a good thing for the plot. So many lessons you could get from this especially people having quarter life crisis, and even young adults trying to fit into adulthood. Its romance, but its more than that. I feel like this book is more on discovering life and what's more of it with a dash of romance.

Sometimes, I'm having a hard time distinguishing who's POV it is, or who's talking to whom. But I eventually got a hand on it. It also bothers me how some important characters like their parents dont have names (or did I just missed it?), they seem to play a vital role to the storyline yet they're just "mom" or "dad".

The main characters are a bit problematic, they are such opposites and I guess the only thing they have in common is the vanlife, I honestly dont see them last long. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed this book. Although, I wish and I know I would have enjoyed it more if it got more tension 😅.The spice is subtle (for me).

I have high respect for content creators because its not easy to think and strategise contents but this book shows their reality, that what we see in social media is not a direct reflection of their private lives. And sometimes, the content that gets viral are the one made for clout and people fall for it. I love how the author did not sugarcoat vanlife and social media life and let us see the reality of it.

Overall, this is a 3/5 for me. It would have been a higher rating for me should it had more tension. I've enjoyed reading this but it lacks something that keeps me wanting to flip the pages. Nevertheless, if you want light, fun, and cute, you'd love this book.

The Road Trip Agreement by Tiana Warner is a slow burning, meandering adventure up and down (or down and up, I suppose) the Pacific Coast. Coral, a van life vlogger from Canada with a small but growing following, is in trouble: she’s got a deal with her parents and if she doesn’t meet the terms, she’ll lose the lifestyle she loves. She’s full of adventure, and her vlog shows it. American vlogger Ruby, on the other hand, is a bit of a perfectionist, whose videos are slow and laid back, and focus on her vegan cooking and her rescue dog, Calvin. She’s got her own problems, though, and this leads her to agree to Coral’s proposal despite already having over a million followers already: go on a joint road trip together to bring in new subscribers, and by extension income, to each other.

The trip brings out different sides of each of them, with Ruby tempering Coral and Coral bringing out Ruby’s more adventurous side. There are quite a few tropes happening here, with fake dating, opposites attracting, and secrets being kept all while they’re stuck together in a van with only one bed, but it works. There really aren’t a lot of side characters with much face time, but we do get Calvin the dog, who has a big personality and helps bring the women even closer. Ruby’s mom and Coral’s sister are the two other characters we get to know the best, and they’re both supportive but a wee bit one-dimensional—mostly because we just don’t get to know them very well as the majority of the story takes place on the road.

Warner brings us some lovely imagery, with descriptive writing and a nice ebb and flow between calm, restful moments and adventurous escapades. There are some hilarious mishaps, but also some more serious moments throughout the book, but it feels really balanced and nothing is too overwhelming. Despite being a super slow burn we do get there, and it culminates in a lovely spicy scene. Overall I really enjoyed The Road Trip Agreement, and I’ll definitely be checking out more of Tiana Warner’s books.

A really fun and sweet adventure!

Coral and Ruby both run vanlife vlogs but one appears more successful than the other. Desperate to keep her van as per the agreement with her parents, Coral approaches Ruby with an idea to take a road trip together. Ruby is hesitant of Coral finding out the truth about why she agreed, but in hopes of boosting both of the audiences, it’s not only a trip they end up sharing.

I loved this so much! It was fun, filled with sweet moments and a little heartache but lots of hope. Coral and Ruby were both dancing around one another’s truths but as they started to build trust they learned a lot about one another and how they could help each other with more than just a boost in ratings because of the trip. When their followers’ comments give Coral and idea for them to fake a relationship, you just know that it has the potential to end in tears, but that combined with them trying to hide the real truth about their reasons for asking and agreeing to the situation is what kept me hooked.

There were great moments and imagery throughout their trip, and some truly lovely experiences, like how Coral was understanding of Ruby’s instructions regarding her rescue dog, and them sharing moments that were genuine even though they told themselves it was for the camera. Immediately, from that first meeting you just get this tingly sense they are meant to be and will be good for one another. I was rooting for Coral and Ruby just as much as they’re fans, because not only were they two of the sweetest and kindest people, but they really cared about other’s and deserved the success and happiness they’d find together both professionally and personally.

So great and hopefully not Ruby and Coral’s last adventure as I would love to join them on another!

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this exciting book

coral and ruby love the life of a vanbloggers, where they both live on the open road and in their vans.... just living the life travelling and exploring and showing the people online what they have seen and experienced

its all about the numbers.... and paying viewers

but coral isnt hitting the numbers that she really needs to pay and her agreement with her parents is about to run out

and ruby, well she has the viewers and the numbers but life is getting complicated with her mom

so they played the game and did a joint journey together in one van hoping to get their viewing figures up but life is about to serve them a curve ball....

a fun read and the life on the road was made very exciting by this book
looking forward to reading more from this author

This cute romance makes me want to hit the road! All the camp sites and nature descriptions are just so gorgeous and peaceful. I enjoyed those elements almost as much as I enjoyed watching adventure-seeking Coral and intentional-living Ruby fall for each other. Fake dating and close proximity are some of my favorite tropes, so this romance was an easy sell. But, seriously! The two women have such a great complement of personality traits; I was just buzzing for them to acknowledge their feelings. And can we talk about Calvin? Who can resist a sweet rescue dog with a back story? No one! Seeing that sweet boy come to trust Coral melted my heart! It was a great, fun read with just the right amount of spice. I immediately added more books from author Tiana Warner onto my reading list!

Ruby's perfectionism, Coral's curiosity, and the urge to punch dudes who won't stop yapping on podcasts made me realize that I am an awkward mixture of both of their characters. Which makes me feel very seen lol. Their conversations and struggles are very realistic, given that they are women in their twenties, which I liked and could relate to a lot. The scenery is written beautifully, the romance is very sweet and I want to go on a road trip myself now.

Sweet and fun!

- I would like to thank Ylva Publishing and Netgalley for the eARC -

Coral is a Youtuber living her dream by sharing her van life and adventures with her followers. The only issue is, if she can't get more followers soon, her parents will force her to give it up. She sees in Ruby, another vlogger although not in the same style, and her rescue dog an opportunity to boost her audience. The two decide to team up for a road trip but aren't ready for their followers to ship them together quite so hard. Is a fake relationship the best way for them to get what they need?

This book has one of my favorite tropes: fake relationship, and on top of that, it's sapphic. So of course, I was in from the start and I was not disappointed. The story was really addictive and compelling and I really liked how real and relatable both women were. They went from strangers to friends to something more and it was super fun and heartwarming to see their feelings develop throughout the story despite how different they are. I was hooked from the first page and didn't want to put the book down because of how exciting and unique the story was. I honestly loved everything about this and I fell in love with Coral and Ruby (and the dog of course) and their unusual lives. I felt like I was driving along with them and it was just amazing.

I highly recommend this great and fun sapphic romance!

"Coral might have laughed if only her heart weren't on the brink of shattering into a million pieces."
