An Unresolved Mystery Holds an Amish Community in Limbo
In book two of A Mifflin County Mystery series, Rosa Petersheim’s disappearance continues to cause suspicion and pain to swirl in the Big Valley.
Ada’s best friend, Rosa, disappeared a year ago and still has not been found. In their grief and confusion, Ada and Rosa’s boyfriend, Ephraim, have grown very close. But some in the community feel Ephraim is responsible for Rosa’s disappearance. Now Rosa’s younger sister is making accusations against Ephraim that can’t be true, and he pulls away from Ada, feeling betrayed. A fire set by an arsonist might finally be the thing to reveal secrets that have long been dividing this community of friends and family. But will it be too late for love between the peacemaker and the suspect?
New York Times bestselling and award-winning author, Wanda E. Brunstetter is one of the founders of the Amish fiction genre. She has written close to 90 books translated in four languages. With over 10 million copies sold, Wanda's stories consistently earn spots on the nations most prestigious bestseller lists and have received numerous awards.
Wanda’s ancestors were part of the Anabaptist faith, and her novels are based on personal research intended to accurately portray the Amish way of life. Her books are well-read and trusted by many Amish, who credit her for giving readers a deeper understanding of the people and their customs.
When Wanda visits her Amish friends, she finds herself drawn to their peaceful lifestyle, sincerity, and close family ties. Wanda enjoys photography, ventriloquism, gardening, bird-watching, beachcombing, and spending time with her family. She and her husband, Richard, have been blessed with two grown children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The Peacemaker is the second book to Wanda Brunstetter’s Mifflin County Mystery series. It picks up where book one left off. Rosa Petersheim has been missing for over a year and no one knows if she is alive or dead. Her family has gone on with their lives but the mystery of Rosa’s disappearance is always on the back of their minds. Will this book reveal what happened to her or will this mystery go on to book three? Romance is a big part of book two. Love is in the air for two couples. Besides the missing Rosa there is another mystery in this book as well. I always enjoy it when this Author adds mystery and romance to her books. I thought The Peacemaker was entertaining, realistic and a page turner. I will be waiting anxiously for book three to be released. I highly recommend this book to readers of Amish Fiction, Romance and Mystery. If you have read book one, The Protector you will want to follow up with this book too. You could read The Peacemaker as a standalone but characters are carried over to this book from book one. I feel that readers would get more out of the mystery if they read book one first. This book is scheduled for release on 3/1/25. I voluntarily read an advanced reader’s copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are entirely my own. #ThePeacemaker # NetGalley
Oh how I love a Wanda Brunstetter story! She had my emotions all over the place. Once I started reading THE PEACEMAKER it was very hard to stop! The twists and turns made it impossible to put down. What an awesome story. All of Wanda’s characters feel genuine and relatable and put your emotions on one heck of a roller coaster ride. As you are reading, you will find yourself cheering for all of them, praying they can work out their problems and be happy once again.
Once you start reading THE PEACEMAKER it will be very hard to put down! Wanda sure knows how to put a new twist on Amish fiction. Ada’s best friend, Rosa has been missing for over a year. Ephraim, who was Rosa’s boyfriend, reconnects with Ada, and at first, it seems like they just want to solve the mystery of Rosa’s disappearance. Ada is a sweet woman and just wants to keep the peace between her family and friends. She knows many in her Amish community blame Ephraim for Rosa disappearing, but Ada knows now that that isnt true at all. Or is it? Ephraim continues to struggle with his past but wants to be moving forward and he wants to do it with Ada. THE PEACEMAKER is filled with faith, forgiveness, second chances, love, as well as hurt and anger.
THE PEACEMAKER is without a doubt one of the best Amish books I’ve read in 2025 so far. I was instantly emotionally invested in all of the characters. Wanda Brunstetter is such a wonderful and heart tugging author and she had me laughing and crying on the very same page. I am now going to read all of her previous books that I have somehow missed and she is now an auto buy author for me! THE PEACEMAKER is the second book in the Mifflin County Mystery series and I can’t wait to read the third book, The Pretender, which comes out in August. Grab your copy today and get on the couch!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
In The Peacemaker, Wanda E. Brunstetter crafts a cozy mystery steeped in Amish traditions, quiet suspense, and tangled relationships. With Rosa’s disappearance still casting a long shadow over Big Valley, secrets and silent suspicions weigh heavy on the community. Ada, grieving the loss of her best friend, finds herself drawn to Ephraim—Rosa’s former boyfriend—just as new accusations threaten to unravel everything.
The story moves at a measured pace, allowing emotions to simmer and relationships to shift. While mystery lingers in the air, the real tension comes in the quiet moments—when trust is tested and long-held doubts creep in. Brunstetter captures the weight of an unresolved case and the fragile bonds of love in a close-knit world where every glance and whisper carries meaning.
Though romance weaves through the narrative, it’s the mystery that keeps the pages turning. With whispers of betrayal, an arsonist stirring up old wounds, and a love triangle that takes a backseat to deeper questions, The Peacemaker unfolds piece by piece—never rushed, never forced, just steadily revealing the truth in its own time.
For those who enjoy a slow-burn mystery with a cozy touch, this story delivers. It’s not about high-speed twists—it’s about the deliberate unraveling, piece by piece, of a community’s buried secrets.
I received a digital ARC of this book from the publisher, Barbor Fiction. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on writing and story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
This is the second book in a trilogy. Rosa disappeared in the first book and was long and drawn out. This book only mentions Rosa and she is not the focus of this book. Ada was my favorite character. She and Ephraim begin to date. I also like Ephraim who is a good son, grandson, and boyfriend.
Loved reading the inspirational and awesome story. Ada has feelings for Ephraim, and she’s willing to spend time with him even it’s just as friends. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting story.
This is the second book in 𝘈 𝘔𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘺 𝘔𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 series. Throughout the series, the focus is on the disappearance of Rosa Petersheim and how it has impacted the people around her.
In book two, the focus shifts to Ada, Rosa’s best friend, and Rosa’s ex-boyfriend, Ephraim. Ada is sweet and nurturing to all those around her. Ephraim is living with his grandmother in Bird-in-Hand, and while he misses his community, he does not miss having to deal with people thinking he had something to do with Rosa’s disappearance.
Ada has always secretly had a crush on Ephraim, so when Ephraim's family circumstances bring him back to Belleville, PA, it stirs up all those feelings. Ada doesn’t want to act on them because of her loyalty to Rosa. Plus, she’s convinced that Ephraim still loves Rosa. Ephraim, on the other hand, feels a strong sense of duty toward his family and believes it’s his responsibility to care for his grandmother. Since she lives in another city, he sees no point in starting a new life in Belleville.
In this book, we continue to hear from Rosa’s brother, Norman, and her sister, Susan. Susan is a character I do not care for, but I feel like Brunstetter is going somewhere with this storyline. I’m holding out to see what happens throughout the entire series because of it.
This book is for anyone who enjoys series, loves a cliffhanger, and is willing to wait for the mystery to be solved. It’s also perfect for those who love sweet romances involving both younger and older couples. I am committed to this series and am still anxiously waiting to find out what happened to Rosa.
*****I received this as an ARC ebook free from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book in this series. I was fortunate enough to also read the first. This continues the story. Branstetter is a fantastic author of Amish romance. She adds mystery, jealousy, and other elements that really make the book fun. In this second book we still don’t know what happened to Ada when she disappeared. Life has been moving on but not all of her family and friends are willing to let it go without answers.
I didn’t realize when I started The Peacemaker by Wanda E Brunstetter that it was the second book in a the Mifflin county mystery series. Mrs Brunstetter did a wonderful job filling you in on the characters so you weren’t lost but I still want to go back and read the first one. In this book Ava’s best friend Rosa Petersheim is still missing and her boyfriend Ephraim was under suspicion since he was the last one to see her and they fought before her disappearance. Ava has always been in love with Ephraim. Will she get a chance with him? Will he notice her or will she always be just Rosa’s best friend? Thank you NetGalley, the author Wanda E Brunstetter, and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the Arc book. This is my honest review!
I always enjoy reading Wanda Brunstetter’s books, especially when they are in a series. This is the 2nd book in the Mifflin County mystery series. I was drawn in from page 1 because after reading the 1st book. The Protector, I was anxious to see if Rosa, the young Amish lady who went missing, was ever found. It does help if you read the first book so you become familiar with the characters. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. This is a must read for sure!
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All words are my own.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. If I could rate this book more than 5 stars, I definitely would give it more. This author never disappoints. Even though I read so many books between the new one in the series, I easily catch up on everyone and the storyline. Wanda Brunstetter is able to do this without being repetitive. I cannot wait until the next book in the series. Thank you to the publisher for granting me an ARC!
Once again, Wanda Brunstetter knocks it out of the park. From page one, I was hooked into the lives of Ada and Ephraim. Their precious courtship with some twist and turns thrown in. Wanda also adds a touch of mystery to this book, while making her readers hang on to each word. You will not regret taking the time to read this book and enjoy the lives of those living closest to Ada and Ephraim, while being worried about their safety!! I love how Wanda also has the ability to bring back stories from her past books to keep you up to date on what's happening!
Thank you NetGalley for this copy of the book in exchange for a honest review

Thoughts: First off. The writing was so much easier to get through!!! There were still parts where it seemed slightly awkward, but it was way less than the other book which made it so much more enjoyable. I loved the characters, and the whole story itself. I didn't like Susan, or her boyfriend though. They were... Yea. Hopefully we will see more of the mystery soon, and find out what actually happened to the missing girl
Favorite character: Ephraim, and Sarah Part: The wedding Quote: NA
Bible Verse: Proverbs 19:17 KJV [17] He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; And that which he hath given will he pay him again.
Mystery. Lies. Mistrust. Heartbreak. All this and more in the next book of the Mifflin County Series. A page turner, for sure. It appears there will be one more book that will answer all the questions that remain.
I absolutely loved Sarah, the grandmother. She is a prime example of not knowing what your future will hold. She grabbed on to happiness when it came her way which made me extremely happy.
I really enjoyed the book. I always love anything Wanda writes. She never disappoints.
I have no idea how Wanda keeps going. She continues to write these delightful stories. Her first published book was in 1997 title A Merry Heart. That is 28 years! What an accomplishment.
I enjoyed this book! It's the 2nd book in the series and I highly recommend reading the 1st one.
Ada is a wonderful character! She loves her family and her community. Her heart has always loved Ephraim but she's hesitant to get close to him because of Rosa's disappearance. Ephraim is wunderbaar! He's loyal, compassionate and trustworthy. I was so happy that he was able to return to his passion for working at the harness shop. Susan, I'm sad to say, I still don't like or trust.
There's quite a bit of drama including health issues, arson and mysterious phone calls. I'm excited to read the next book!!
I loved getting to know more of the Amish in the Big Valley area of Pennsylvania that I met in “The Protector”, the first novel in the Mifflin County Mystery series. Reading that first might be helpful to learn more about Rosa Petersheim, her mysterious disappearance, and the extensive search Norman, her brother, conducted. A brief backstory of it is included throughout “The Peacemaker”. There is also an unknown arsonist setting fire to many Amish barns, adding to the secrets of the night.
The author delivers more three-dimensional people who had been close to Rosa, including her former boyfriend, Ephraim, and her best friend, Ada. Norman, still suspicious of Ephraim, never thought Ephraim told the full truth of what happened that night she vanished. Ephraim and Ada had each, separately, lovingly confronted Rosa about being baptized and joining the Amish church. The conversation Rosa and Ada had may have damaged their nearly lifelong friendship. Wild parties and friends had been the norm for Ephraim and Rosa during the early days of their Rumspringa. He was ready to settle down, join the church, and marry. Rosa was not. It is still unknown whether Rosa ran away from the Amish community that night, or if she met with a tragic end.
Ada loved where she worked and what she did at a local greenhouse. She wanted to marry and have children, but never had a serious relationship. Many people still whispered that Ephraim probably killed Rosa. He had moved to Bird-in-Hand to help his widowed grandmother. Ephraim wanted to return and help run his father’s harness shop, but his grandmother refused to leave her home. When his father, her only son, had a heart attack, they returned to the Big Valley to help out.
Matters of the heart were front and center, as Norman and his fiancé, Salina, reconciled their differences after the months he spent searching for Rosa. His sister, Susan, dated Ben, a young man who moved to the area about a year ago. Ben still kind of lived the Amish way, but was a daredevil, taking risks that put others in great danger. Ephraim and Ada began courting, and quickly grew close through their mutual interests. Another couple met and began courting, showing how love can occur at any age.
Faith in the Lord was lived out, especially by Ada and other family members. Ada strived to be a peacemaker, continually leaning on the Lord to learn and live it. A troublemaker separated her and Ephraim, and even threatened Ephraim’s freedom. The arsonist set fire to Ephraim’s parents’ barn, and he and his still-recovering father tried to free their horses from the flames.
This is an excellent continuation from the “The Protector”. I was happy to spend time with Ada and Ephraim and get to know them better. I loved how nature was portrayed, as characters listen to or watch birds and various seasonal changes. Each person close to Rosa has had to go forward despite her absence, wondering if they would ever hear from or see her again. I am very much looking forward to the next novel that will hopefully bring good news to the community. I highly recommend this novel and series, especially to those who appreciate reading about the Amish community and enjoy mysteries and romance.
From a thankful heart: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
The Peacemaker by Wanda E. Brunstetter Book 2 - A Mifflin County Mystery An Unresolved Mystery Holds an Amish Community in Limbo In book two of A Mifflin County Mystery series, Rosa Petersheim’s disappearance continues to cause suspicion and pain to swirl in the Big Valley. This is Rosa Petersheim’s story. This is Ada Detweiler's story. This is Alice and Jacob Detweiler's story. This is Ephraim Peight’s story. Rosa Petersheim, disappeared a year ago and still has not been found. “I bet this nasty weather will keep customers from visiting the greenhouse today.” Ada composed herself enough to set the eggs on the counter and turn to face her mother. “I mean, who would want to go out shopping on a wet, dreary day like this?” When folks want something bad enough, they’ll go wherever they want to get it, in spite of the weather.” “I hope you’re right. I wouldn’t want to be standing around all day at the greenhouse, doing nothing.” It had been a little over a year since Rosa’s disappearance, and a day hadn’t gone by that Ada didn’t think about the friendship she’d had with Rosa since they were children. She hadn’t seen Ephraim Peight since he’d moved to Bird-in-Hand to live with his widowed grandmother. Ada wondered if he had talked his grandma into moving here to live with his family. Ephraim’s father, Lewis, was an only child, and Ada had heard through the grapevine that he was concerned about his mother living alone and had asked her to sell her home and relocate to Allensville to live with him and his family. When she’d refused, he’d talked Ephraim into leaving the Big Valley and going down to Lancaster County to be with his grandmother. “H–hello, Ephraim. It’s nice to see you. Are you back living in Allensville now?” I recommend reading this book.. The Peacemaker by Wanda E. Brunstetter is a 5 star book. I am looking forward to reading more books by Wanda E. Brunstetter. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are my own. The Protector by Wanda E. Brunstetter Book 1 A Mifflin County Mystery The Peacemaker by Wanda E. Brunstetter Book 2 - A Mifflin County Mystery
The Peacemaker by Wanda E Brunstetter- Mystery, Relationships, Romance, Amish Fiction
The Peacemaker by Wanda E Brunstetter is the second book in the Mifflin County Mystery series. The first book in the series, The Protector, introduced readers to many of the characters featured in this second book.
Ada Detweiler was best friends with Rosa Petersheim who disappeared over a year ago. No one has seen or heard from Rosa since the night she went missing. Rosa’s disappearance continues to weigh heavy on the Petersheim family and friends. Out of necessity people have tried to go on with their lives, but still have hope that Rosa may return or they will finally get answers.
Ephraim Peight was Rosa’s boyfriend and he was the last person to see Rosa alive. Though there is no evidence, some people still suspect Ephraim of foul play. When Ephraim is asked to go stay with his grandmother and help her, he is reluctant to leave. Trying to make the best of the situation, he hopes that he will have a fresh start in a town where nobody knows him.
When Lewis Peight has a heart attack, Ephraim returns to town to help with this father’s business. During that time Ada and Ephraim start seeing each other as friends. Ada’s had feeling for Ephraim for quite a while, but would it be right for her to have a relationship with her missing friend’s boyfriend?
The Petersheim’s story continues and we see the impact Rosa’s disappearance has had on their family.
Faith is a part of this story. I like how faith was woven into the characters everyday lives. Most of the characters in the book were likeable. Not only are the main characters are featured, but also members of the families. Young, old and in between. Reading this book, you get a sense of what the community is like. I appreciate being able to read a clean novel.
I hope that in the next book of the Mifflin County Mystery series readers will find out what happened to Rosa.
I enjoyed reading The Peacemaker. The book is set at a slower pace and is more about developing the characters as opposed to an action novel. This works as a standalone novel, but you might benefit if you read the first novel, The Protector. If you like Amish fiction, mysteries, or romance novels I recommend The Peacemaker by Wanda E Brunstetter.
I would like to thank Barbour Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of The Peacemaker by Wanda E Brunstetter. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review. The Peacemaker will be released on March 1, 2025.
Welcome back to another exciting book in this series. A young woman has been missing for a year and the community stills wonders what happened to her. I think not knowing would be so devastating and could keep people from moving forward. Ada misses her best friend so much. She longs for the times they spent together and feels empty inside . Grief has overwhelmed Ada as she tries to think of her future. She thinks of Rosa a lot and it feels like she doesn’t feel like she should find happiness because perhaps she feels like it would mean she has given up hope of ever seeing her friend again.
Ephraim moved away from his family to help take care of his grandmother. He misses Rosa but knows that some people think he is a suspect in her disappearance. That would be such a big burden to overcome. When he comes home for a visit a friendship starts to develop between him and Ada. I did like Ephraim’s relationship with his grandmother. He was patient, helpful and protective of her. I appreciate how the author illustrates how grandparents are important to a family.
With a look inside the Amish community you see people who help each other, love unconditionally and work had. I love how they live simple lives and grow much of their own vegetables, fruits and herbs. Working long hours they appreciate what God has given them. Their commitment to faith is encouraging and also share meals together after services.
It was interesting to read about Ben and Susan. Neither of them have joined the church yet. As they share pizza together they talk about the challenges they face. Ben doesn’t like all the rules that he would have to abide by if he joined. Susan mentions that her dad is the bishop for their church district and believes that most of the rules come from the Bible. I wonder why Ben is so against joining the church? It bothered me that he was trying to influence Susan not to join.
I loved how Ada was always trying to help others and relied on God to give her words of encouragement. The story is emotional and filled with faith as we follow characters who share their struggles. Will Ada and Ephraim be able to find a way to grow their relationship? Can Susan trust Ben? Who will solve the mystery of Rosa?
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The review is my own opinion.
We are welcome back to the Big Valley. Where we left off, we see Rosa's best friend's point of view. In this book, we get to follow Ada and Ephraim some more. Will we find out what happened to Rosa? Is she still alive, or is she gone? Norman and Salina, how are they doing as well? Will we finally see Norman and Salina get married?
We are also still following the Rosa Family; the community is still grieving, and suspicion is still going around. So, we are still suspecting or taking action on Ephraim of Rosa's disappearance. But is there more to the community than dividing it apart?
Will Ada and Ephraim get together, or will it fall apart? Is there love between Ada and Ephraim? There is so much confusion and pain surrounding Rosa's disappearance that it is hard for anyone to know for sure. But what will happen? Will there be love between a peacemaker and a suspect? Will it last, or will it be too late for the two of them? Well, Ephraim will return to Lancaster County, where his grandma lives. Will Ephraim and his grandma stay there? But does the Lord have plans?
Ephraim is pondering whether to start looking or make some friends in Lancaster in case he ends up staying.
He seems to ponder this when he finds Blue in the barn. Eventually, he finds a missing pup and starts looking for its owner. He meets Anna.
Back with Ada, she seems to be going about her dad as a greenhouse but appears to be fighting her feelings for Ephraim, though she doesn't know if it's a good thing or not, when she knows Rosa broke the relationship up with Ephraim.
Ada hears about Susan through her mother and her friend's mother. She hears Susan lying about not being at a young people's gathering and being out with Ben.
Though Ephraim's father seems to have suffered a major injury that has put him in the hospital and made him and his grandmother hurry to Lewistown, is there a way to pray for them to stay in the Big Valley for good? Or will his grandmother want to return to Lancaster and have her eldest grandchildren go with her?
The second book in A Mifflin County Mystery is The Peacemaker, by Wanda E. Brunstetter. It picks up nicely where book 1, The Protector left off. A year has passed, and there is still no word from Rosa Petersheim. Her brother Norman and Salina have reconciled, and are now engaged, and Norman has turned his focus to work and his upcoming marriage to Salina. Rosas boyfriend, Ephraim Peight has moved to Bird In Hand to live with his fathers mother, Sarah, to help take care of her. The time away has allowed him to escape the distrustful stares and whispers of those who feel he was responsible for Rosas disappearance. Although he is 120 miles away, Ephraim still manages to visit home, and it is there that he runs into Rosas best friend, Ada. In Book 2, we learn that Ada has carried a torch for Ephraim for quite a while, and they are now spending a good amount of time together, especially since Ephraim has returned home to help out at his fathers harness shop, after his father suffers a heart attack and is unable to work. Sarah has also rushed home to be at her sons side, as he recuperates. In a cute twist, Sarah herself finds in a budding romance with the likes of Josiah Weaver, who is also visiting his son in the area. Its also nice and refreshing to see an author who highlights personal relationships among a segment of society that does not get much attention. The book is also filled with a fair amount of mystery in some garbled phone calls and messages (could it be Rosa?), and mysterious fires that are happening throughout the Big Valley. The story also focuses on the timely themes of redemption, second chances and new perspectives. If possible, it is just as good (maybe even a bit better since we are already familiar with the characters) than the first book. But if this is the first book in the series you pick up, do not worry, there is enough of a backstory to fill in all the missing pieces from Book 1.
This captivating novel is the second installment in the Mifflin County Mystery series, picking off the thread of Rosa Petersheim's sudden disappearance and its lingering impact on her family and friends. The narrative shifts its focus to Rosa’s best friend, Ada, who yearns for a fresh start and brighter days amidst the pervasive grief and confusion that Rosa's mysterious vanishing has cast over their close-knit community.
My Thoughts: While an air of mystery hovers over the storyline, the emphasis lies on the characters' emotional journeys as they strive to move forward, all while their lives remain inextricably linked to the unresolved tensions surrounding Rosa’s disappearance and the ominous shadows that loom over Ephraim. I was particularly loved how the author skillfully delves into Ada's deep-seated desire for renewal—for a new chapter in her life that includes her feelings for Ephraim. Yet, she grapples with her own insecurities, causing her to question her self-worth, which in turn strains her relationships, especially with the person she holds most dear.
Wanda artfully illustrates the ripple effects of secrets and an unresolved mystery, showcasing how they can permeate every layer of a close community. This tension is particularly palpable when the threat of arson fires ignites a greater sense of urgency. The author’s rich descriptions of the Amish lifestyle, combined with heartfelt family dynamics, create a vivid backdrop for the unfolding drama.
This lovely story interweaves familial bonds, suspenseful mystery, and a tender, wholesome romance, all anchored in solid faith-based themes.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Barbour Publishing!
Being a loyal fan of Wanda Brunstetter I am enjoying this new series of books, A Mifflin County Mystery. The Protector is book one in the series and leaves a community stunned over the mysterious disappearance of Rosa Petersheim. Relationships are strained when Rosa's brother Norman doggedly follows up leads to her disappearance especially her boyfriend Ephriam who was seen arguing with Rosa just before she took off on her own and disappeared. The Peacemaker, book two in the series picks up right where book one ended. Rosa is still nowhere to be found, and life has moved on as best as a family can while haunted by Rosa's disappearance. Ada, who is Rosa's best friend has always had a secret crush on Ephriam but with Rosa gone would it be possible for a relationship to develop with her best friend's boyfriend? There are those in the community that feel that Ephriam was involved in Rosa's disappearance. We are also in for a ride when Ben Ebersol continues to weave his way into the story. When an arsonist begins to burn down barns in the area nerves are raw. Ada was the peacemaker who tried to smooth the chaos that surrounded them. Readers will love how the story develops between Ada and Ephriam. True to Wanda's style of writing there is much love, faith and forgiveness woven into her story. I love that she includes scripture that flows with the storyline. The ending of the book will have you on the edge of your seat!! Talk about a cliffhanger but this one was not what I was expecting as we eagerly await book three, The Pretender: The Big Valley Disappearance. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. It is an honor to do so.
This latest release by Brunstetter was not my favorite of her works. I greatly respect this author but felt there was too much going on with too many characters. The beauty of Amish fiction lies in its simplicity, and I felt this story was overcomplicated and disjointed. The main character Ada is in love with her estranged and missing friend's boyfriend. Ephraim the boyfriend starts off pining for his missing girlfriend then suddenly after attending a fair with Ada he is in love with her and ready to propose. There is also a senior romance between Sarah and Josiah that was forced to the point of ridiculousness. Josiah comes looking for his missing cat, meets Sarah and well you get the picture. The book ends with a wedding of two side characters in the epilogue. (??) The mysterious barn burner strikes randomly without rhyme or reason, and Ada breaks off her engagement with Ephraim after she hears one gossipy report from an unreliable source. If I were Ephraim I would have told her good riddance! The highlight of the book came on Christmas Eve when the missing Rosa Petersheim's mother hears a knock on her door. She hopes it is her daughter returning home for Christmas but instead finds a lost traveler. The traveler is another mother asking for directions to her estranged daughter's home. Mrs. Petersheim not only gets the woman the needed directions but sends her on her way with some homemade cookies for her family gathering. I felt this truly embodied the holiday spirit. I wish I could give this book a higher rating but please don't judge Wanda Brunstetter's backlog by this one! I received this book as a gift from Barbour Publishing with no obligation to review.
Ada, a young Amish woman, always felt like she played second fiddle in life. When her best friend, Rosa, caught the eye of Ephraim, Ada secretly wished Ephraim had liked her instead.
Long after the two became an item, Rosa disappeared after a huge fight with Ephraim. Many people witnessed the blow up, and there were rumors that Ephraim did something to her. It has been disproved, but many still think he is guilty.
Ephraim is now back home after spending several months away helping his grandmother. He has started spending time with Ada, but is he sincere, or is he trying to squelch the rumors about him, and using Ada as a distraction. After all, Ada has never felt worthy of his love.
There are interesting side stories, too. First, Ephraim's grandmother, Sarah, and the friendship she has formed with Josiah. Then there is Susan, Rosa's sister, who is in love with Amish bad boy, Ben. Next, the mysterious barn burnings that have never been solved.
This is a great book because of all the things that come about with Ada, the side stories, and the on-going mystery of what happened to Rosa. You will be glued to this tale, wanting to know what takes place next.
Although part of a series, this clean story stands on its own. If you are a fan of well-written stories, Amish tales, or mysteries, you will enjoy this five-star book. I recommend it.
Thank you, Barbour Books, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.
Book 2 in A MIFFLIN COUNTY MYSTERY SERIES by Wanda Brunstetter. Ada's best friend Rosa had disappeared after a gathering, never to be heard from again. After a year, Ada still had the same worries, did Rosa get killed and the killer hid her body or why would her best friend run away without telling her? Rosa's boyfriend at the time, Ephraim had been thoroughly questioned & found to be innocent. Later he moved to another county to be with his widowed grandmother because she didn't want to leave her home. One day Ephraim showed up at the greenhouse where Ada worked. When he saw Ada, he explained it was his mothers birthday & he and his grandmother had come to visit. On the spur of the moment he invited Ada to his parents house for some birthday cake & ice cream. Before going back to Lancaster County Ada & Ephraim agreed to write to each other & occasionally leave phone messages. Ephraim's grandmother eventually met & married a widower, so Ephraim was able to move back home to Big Valley. Ben Ebersol restarted the rumor that Ephraim killed Rosa. When Ada confronted Ephraim, he was so shocked & hurt that she would believe Ben, he let Ada walk away from their relationship. Would this be the end of their relationship or will a life threatening fire set by an arsonist convince Ada of her love for Ephraim?
A fire set by an arsonist might finally be the thing to reveal secrets that have long been dividing this community of friend
My Review:
Its so sad that Rosa disappears and as the town has had to go on without her without any real definite answers just makes this story even more sad. Ephraim seems to be the scape got for Rosa's disappearance at least by the town's standards. Ada and Ephraim become closer and I'm not sure many people around town approve of that. Things shift and people start to see who is really at fault.
This story is so sad and it really touches you to see how the town reacts to such a huge loss. And what Ada and Ephraim do in an attempt to pick up the pieces.
A great addition to the Mifflin County Mystery series. I like the characters and really want to see what come next for this town and its people.
**Disclosure**This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Oh this was much better than the first book, which I struggled to enjoy. I am glad that I read this one, to continue to give the series a chance. I hope to read the third book soon after it is released.
Thankfully Norman was not the main character in this book, since a lot of the times he bothered me in the first book. His annoying sister Susan on the other hand, is in this book a lot, but she does seem less annoying and a little more mature! This time, Susan has a beau she has been interested in, and it just so happens to be Salina's ex, Ben. You remember Ben from the first book; the troublemaker who has an adrenaline rush in doing things. Susan really likes him a lot, for some reason.
Rosa has been missing for a long time now and still no one knows where she is. Oh, remember the arson issue in the first book? Well, that continues in this one. While one mystery has not been solved, another is in this book.
What I did love in this story is that we get to hear from Rosa's best friend Ada and Rosa's ex-boyfriend Ephraim. Ephraim has been living with his grandmother but visits his family for a bit due to a situation that takes place. Ada has always had a secret crush on him, but she stayed quiet about it because her best friend was dating him. She finds herself around Ephraim a lot more lately and they seem to be having a nice time catching up on life. She is still afraid Rosa will return, so she must be silent still.
Another lead character in this book is actually Ephraim's grandmother. She's a free spirit. I like her. She has her own cute story in this.
THE PEACEMAKER (A MIFFLIN COUNTY MYSTERY, 2) By Wanda E. Brunstetter
This is a contemporary Amish mystery. It begins in Belleville, Pennsylvania. Ada Detweiler's best friend Rosa Petersheim disappeared over a year ago. Rosa's brother Norman had left no stone unturned in the effort to find his sister.
Ephraim Peight moved to Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania to help look after his widowed grandmother. He has other things that he wants to do with his life, but he's doing the right thing for his family, right now.
Some mysteries are explained in this book, but others are not. It could be a stand-alone book, but it helps if you read these books in order. I've read book 1 and I plan on reading book 3 when it comes out.
Wanda E. Brunstetter is a wonderful Amish fiction author. I love how she substitutes Pennsylvania Dutch words into her text and puts the meaning of the words in the next sentence or two. You feel like you are learning a little, while you are reading her novels. She always adds a little of the Christian faith into her books, it makes her characters seem more real. The bonus recipe at the end is perfect!

The Peacemaker by Wanda E. Brunstetter is the second book in A Mifflin County Mysteries. This book can be read as a standalone, but I believe an individual would have a better reading enjoy if they read The Protector first. The Peacemaker picks up where The Protector ends. Rosa Petersheim is still missing. No one has seen or heard from her in a year. While her family and friends miss her, their lives are moving forward. I found The Peacemaker to be easy to read with appealing characters. I felt for Ada who is the peacemaker in the bunch. She is not a fan of conflict or people being at odds with each other. Romance dominates The Peacemaker. We get to see various couples find love, though, the path to happiness may be a bumpy one. My favorite romance involved Ephraim’s grandmother. I was disappointed that the story did not touch on Rosa’s disappearance besides rehashing the details and mentioning how much everyone missed her. I wish there had been some update on the case. The story does contain a mystery. Someone is burning down barns and no one can figure out who is behind the heinous acts. It does not take Sherlock Holmes to identify the guilty party (it is so obvious). I am looking forward to Rosa’s story in The Pretender. The Peacemaker is a touching tale with a bustling greenhouse, a homesick saddler, a generous grandmother, a missing sister, nuptial plans, and plenty of prayers.
