Possessing magic is a crime, but so too is waging a war against the king she was born to protect...

Vera’s only wish is to live a quiet life without the magic that took everything from her, but when a new decree by the king she was born to protect brings his soldiers to her town of exiles, Vera is forced to step out of the shadows.

Wracked with guilt and anger, Vera swears to avenge the fallen. To do that, Vera enlists the help of the mysterious War King, the leader of a ruthless sect of Forsaken hellbent on causing the crown as much suffering as the crown has caused them.

Vera soon discovers that the War King is not who she thought he was, and the more she gets to know him, the harder it becomes to keep not only her forbidden magic in check, but her heart too.

As old scars resurface, she must learn to embrace the magic she was taught to fear before she loses everyone she swore to protect.

okay this was an amazing debut by Rachel ! 🫶🏻

this story was so well rounded with magic, monsters, grief & revenge - what more could you want! I ate this up like I always do with a slow burn romance that was so unique! The MMC felt so different from typical MMCs which was refreshing & the romance subplot was actually so well done - without giving too much away, it was chefs kiss!!!

Rachel’s writing was amazing in this - I found a new autobuy author 🙌🏻 I absolutely loved this ARC & I’m so grateful for the opportunity to read this ❤️

If you love a slow burn, epic fantasy with forbidden magic and where he falls first, then you will devour this book!

Vera is an incredible character you can root for immediately. She knows all about injustice and loss; she possesses magic that has forced her out of society. And despite things going from bad to worse, she’s fierce and steadfast in what she believes in. Though her mission is initially fueled by vengeance, she grows so much during the story and its amazing to watch.

And the romance? The tension, the banter, and the desire is *chef’s kiss*. I love the War King, he doesn’t feel like a cardboard cutout like so many male characters in fantasy romance novels.

I am really impressed with Rachel Rodilosso - this story is just her debut. She’s an automatic buy for me from now on and I can’t wait to read what she writes next!

Been in a reading slump! I started and stopped nearly 10 books before this one caught my attention. I downloaded this book from the last ‘no spice stuff your kindle day’. I LOVE the cover!

Quick blurb: Vera spent her childhood knowing she had been born for the sole reason to protect the king and crown. When that fate is stripped away from her, she struggles to discover who she is without it.

Thoughts: This debut romance fantasy was captivating and well-written. The story is well paced throughout and has plenty of action. Vera’s character arc was well done. I enjoyed reading how she was fiercely independent and afraid of her magic, but she begins to open up more and to understand more about her magic. The romance between Kaius & Vera is a subplot but it felt right with the type of plot. The romance was sweet and fade-to-black with chin lifts, one room/one bed, and protective vibes. The ending felt very ‘King Arthur and the Knights of the round table’ but it was good closure and a happy ending. If you’re looking for a magic-filled adventure to overthrow a corrupt king with a romantic subplot, Bound by Blood and Oath is your book!

It has been a while since I have been able to pick up a fantasy book and find myself wanting to sit and read for more than a few minutes at a time. Many stories try to be over complicated or over explain situations/environments. Sometimes, that is a good thing, but I feel that with this story, it was kept simpler. In a good way.

This story had great characters with engaging personalities. They were flawed, as pretty much everyone is, but grew as the story progressed. The world building was, to me, the right amount. Enough to get you into the story, but not put you to sleep with the amount of detail.

The romance was a slower burn but turned out so cute and refreshing to see. With just enough scenes of hinted passion to have some romance aspects but not take over the whole story.

I will say, I personally would have loved the magic to have been a bit more fleshed out and explained. It was interesting, but it seemed like it needed just a bit more exploring.

Overall, I loved this book. I was invested in the characters and loved the twists and turns it took as new details were told of the background of the story. If you love fantasy magic centered books with a dash of romance, I would highly recommend this book!

****************

Vera has led an extremely hard life. Being born as part of a group to which serves the crown with unwavering loyalty, the Bloodborn, she finds out while still a child that she has magic running through her veins. Magic that the King and his family has forbidden. Although she thought no one saw her first magical outburst, she was brought before the king before she even made it to bed, to be branded as a Forsaken, a magic wielder, and cast into the world to figure it out on her own.

As the harsh weather approaches, she find shelter from the cold, where is found by another of the Forsaken and brought back to their community they build in their collective exile.

Magic cost her everything. Her family, her future, and her sacred duty. Vera decides to not ever use magic again, since all it’s brought to her is pain and suffering. Until she saves a child, who was about to executed for having magic, due to the kings new creed.

To save the people that she has grown to love and care for, Vera must seek aid from another faction of the Forsaken. A group known to be warriors, the Northern Raiders, and their War King, Kaius. He is known to be ruthless in his hatred of the Bloodborn.

When he agrees, they must find a way to take the castle and kill the king.

Tensions between the two build, while their plans become reality. But is it enough to take back their freedom and get justice for their people??

****************

I will say, it’s been a while since I’ve picked up a Romantasy that isn’t jammed packed with on page smut. The slow burn on this was definitely nice. And the tension between a stubborn, independent FMC and a rough, but sweet MMC is something I didn’t know I was missing.

I definitely enjoyed reading it, and do wish it had been longer, but all stories need an ending place. Which was not what I had envisioned at all for it.

The only thing I felt was missing was a brief description of the groups at the beginning. I did find myself having to note things down to make sure I was keeping them straight and not mixing up who they were in my mind to keep everything in order.

Congratulations Rachel. Bound by Blood and Oath was truly an amazing book to read. I can tell you put a lot of time and love into creating this world, the characters, and the storyline. Maybe I am luckily enough to ARC for you in the future.

Thank you to Rachel Rodilosso for the ARC.

Plot 4.5/5
Characters 4.25/5
Ending 4/5
Interest 4.25/5

Overall 4.25/5

-As a whole, this was a really strong fantasy standalone with some romance. I really liked the world and the whole forsaken aspect involving magic. Although I didn’t really see a clear cut magic system although that doesn’t really bother me. The plot itself was quite intriguing and at some point I did feel like the story was moving a bit too fats because of the shortness but I still really enjoyed it nonetheless.

-The characters were quite nice. They felt a bit ‘normal’, shall I say, for a romantasy book. Each of the two main characters had their own little elements which I liked and together, I liked their banter, even after they had gotten together which was nice to see that it was still there. Their relationship was cute although I would have liked to see a more developed way of falling in love. The side characters were also good, especially once they had infiltrated the city. I liked seeing the non-banned people react.

-The ending, again, felt like a typical standalone fantasy ending. Nothing really stood out to me although I really enjoyed the alliance between certain characters and the past being brought up for our main character.

Sublime worldbuilding and well thought out story! The intimate scenes are briefly suggestive, no smut. It is a fantasy book with a romantic development, but I didn’t miss the spice. Run, don’t walk to read it!

⋆ Review: ‘Bound by Blood and Oath’ by Rachel Rodilosso [ENG/ESP ↓]
⋆ Standalone as of now, but there’s a possibility of book 2
⋆ Genre: High Fantasy, Romantic Fantasy (aka Romantasy)
⋆ Tropes: slow-burn, grumpy x joker, lots of banter, ‘Who did this to you?’, one bed, fade to black, magical world, forbidden magic, revenge, found family
⋆ POV: mostly singular, told in the 3rd person
⋆ Length: 402 pages (Kindle edition)
⋆ My rating: 4 stars

This follows the story of Vera, a Forsaken —which means she is a person with magical powers exiled by her King because of said magic— who’s sworn off using magic for fear and sorrow. She was rescued and given a home by Serena, the Guardian of the Grove where they live, when she was a child. Serena is one of the few and closest people in her life. She’s her friend, mentor, and family, after suffering many punishments from her mother when she was little and the following forsaking of her person.

Everything changes in the Solstice Eve, when, after rescuing a girl from being executed for her magic, the King’s guard, composed of Oathsworns and Bloodbounds, attacks the Grove, and Serena is killed defending her people. They always lived in peace, in their corner of nature far away from any town. They hadn’t intended to fight the King until then.

Serena had been the one to help her when she had lost everything. The one to bring light back into her life when darkness had threatened to snuff it all out. The one who fought to become her friend no matter how many times Vera had tried to push her away. And King Braedon had taken her from her.

To avenge Serena and save future Forsakens from being killed, Vera seeks the help of the War King, a ruthless leader of another band of exiled magical people. And a good enemy of the crown as well as her.

If war was what King Braedon wanted, then it was a war he would have.

And as things get more dangerous, her magic demands to be listened to and used more and more to protect those she loves…

Regarding the characters, Vera’s story is one of great despair, but also one of finding her family along the way. At the beginning, I struggled to connect with her, as her reasonings as for why she didn’t use her magic seemed unreasonable to me. But as the story advances, we get to understand her more deeply, understand her past traumas, and see her develop her personality into a more fierce, strong woman. One brave enough to even face herself, a thing I respect deeply. It was special seeing her grow.

Kaius, the leader of the Raiders, also known as the War King, was —almost— all the time a joyful character to fall in love with. He was very protective of Vera, a man who would burn down the world if needed for her. There was a moment towards the end where I screamed at him, or at my Kindle, but he did well to recover from that pretty quickly —it reminded me a bit of Daemon from HOD series, if you read it and watch the show let me know if you agree—.

“You need to love your magic.”
“Not the magic of the abilities you possess, but the magic of what makes you unique. What makes you, you.”

The romance in this story is nicely done, and it doesn’t fill every aspect of it. Also, the spicy scenes are ‘fade to black’, we only witness the start of them. This made me appreciate other aspects of their connection. I love how they made each other laugh!

There were also side characters that I loved, for example, her friends Kaleb and Nix, Poppy —love her boldness—, and a certain someone that I won’t mention to avoid spoiling anything, but you’ll know towards the end. All of them added so much to the story and would love to see more of their lives in the future. I was sad to let them go.

“I know you, and I know you aren’t alright. But I also know you won’t talk about it no matter how hard I press. So I came by to tell you that when you’re ready, I’ll be there to listen.”

The balance between the romance and the political plot was good. I liked learning about the world they lived in and seeing how the two groups of Forsaken blended and worked together.

I wish this had been a longer story, I would have liked a more in-depth explanation of the magic system. I also have so many questions about how the political intrigues will develop and how will the hands of the Gods play a part in that. And would love to know more about said Gods and their background stories. I’m hoping there’ll be a book 2 to quench my thirst for answers.

This is Rachel’s debut novel, and I truly enjoyed her writing. It was beautiful, clean, and whimsical at times. I’m truly happy to have found her stories and can’t wait for the next adventure she’ll bring us —a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, one of my favorite childhood tales—.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to have read this in advance. Thank you, Rachel, for trusting me with your precious work!

⋆ Reseña: ‘Bound by Blood and Oath’ por Rachel Rodilosso

I don’t think I’ve read a book totally like this…and I’ve read A LOT of fantasy books with magic. I want this to be a series, but at the same time not because the author tied everything into such a neat bow at the end of this I’m content with it being a one and done.

This book is written so beautifully. The story is well paced and has plenty of action. While there is romance, it takes the back seat to Vera becoming the woman she becomes.
I enjoyed reading how Vera was afraid of her magic but then grew to understand that sometimes we are taught wrong. The ending is very “King Arthur and the Knights of the round table.” I do hope there is a novella or something like that to explore what happens after Vera kills Braedon and his daughter takes over.

I enjoyed this story very much. I found the world building well done and easy to follow. I think my only criticism would be that I wished the magic system had been explained a bit more. I was intrigued to know the difference between everyone's magic, but that was missing. Otherwise I really enjoyed seeing Vera's growth. I loved that she was able to admit when she was wrong and forgive and grow. Her relationship with Kia was fun to read about. I actually want more of this world and hope there will be more in the future.

This was an entertaining and fast-paced read. It felt a little rushed, and I wished there was more in-depth backstories and worldbuilding, but I did enjoy the jam-packed action. It kept me hooked and made me feel like I was flying through the book.

Vera did go through a nice character development, and it was fun to see her step into her real power and not be ashamed of it anymore.
The romance was a cute, slow burn, enemies to lovers. There was a good balance of plot and romance, and the spice was fade to black.

I honestly did not see the plot twist coming, and it made my jaw drop, but I'm glad this ended with an HEA. Overall, I did enjoy the story, and it was a nice break from the complex fantasy. This was very easy to absorb.

As a child Vera didn't realize the severity of needing to hide her magic because the King and his family had forbidden it. But when she had her first magical moment, that she thought no one witnessed she found herself being taken to the king where she was branded and cast out on her own as a Forsaken.  Vera was found by another Forsaken and brought into their community. Since magic ended up costing Vera everything she decided to never use magic again. This all changes when she uses her magic to save someone from being excluded under the King's new decree.

Kaius is the War King, from another Forsaken community, made up of warriors known as the Northern Riders. Kaius is known to be ruthless especially towards his hatred for the Bloodborn. He is out to make sure the crown suffers as much as they made him suffer.

When Vera goes to Kaius for help, he agrees. Now they must plan a way to take the castle and kill the king. But Vera soon learns there's more to Kaius than she thought.

This book is full of magic and monsters as well as sadness, grief, and revenge,  along with some twists and a slow burn romance that rounds out this book to be a fantastic read. Rachel Rodilosso is a wonderful writer that I've added to my list as I can't wait to read what she releases next!

So glad it’s over
I’m a firm believer in fantasy books being SERIES
when you write a standalone things are too rushed too sloppy too much too fast
I don’t have a connection with the characters
I already hated instalove to begin with so with this I wanted to punch a fist in the wall when they were like “my War King” blah blah blah
PLEASE
yall knew each other for like four days and you’re like “my walls are coming down!” Girl what was the walls made of pixie dust!?!
You know it’s bad when I recoil at the happiness of the hero and heroine
Because it doesn’t feel genuine to me! I didn’t connect with them even after knowing their little backstory
The plot was so mediocre and it was so rushed! It didn’t feel authentic at all
The dialogue was blah
The ending was blah
It was all very blah .
Glad it’s over

Vera, a Bloodbound Forsaken, has spent the last 16 years branded and exiled from her home.
When the Oathsworn come and destroy her town, she declares war on the King of Adrilla.
But first, she needs help! She seeks the assistance of the War King. He agrees to help with her revenge because that is also what he is seeking.

Kaius, the War King, and Vera were so cute together. The way he pushed her to believe in herself and her magic. He countered all her negative self talk and helped her regain confidence. I loved the way he cared for her.
Vera let him in and she realized how much she needed him. They way his words changed her. I adore that for her!!

I enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author!

This is the first book I read from this author and I liked it a lot!! Starts off with action and ends with a HEA. I loved this storyline so much. It's about magical people called Forsaken and none magical people. It's a very interesting story and the way the story goes, it keeps you on your feet.

I didn't want to put this book down with how good it was. It is a closed door book, but that makes up with all the action that's in this book. Plus I loved me some Kaius, man he knew what he was doing with everything he did. Honestly I can't wait to read what else this author has to write! I would give this book a read.

This is a review for those out there looking for clean fantasy reads. Since this did not align with my values and convictions I am not going to star rate, but I wanted others to have a clear view of what they are stepping into.

Has language, but was used infrequently, which when it was used it threw me out of the story.

Gay side couple. They touch and could almost be passed off as a brother relationship. Almost.

Sex scenes fade to black but is descriptive so you know what is coming. After the first time they are teased by friends for being loud.

Minor typo errors. Overall a good storyline, could have been more fleshed out in places. Hope this helps another reader.

This took me a long time to finally get interested in. The beginning is slow and maybe even too long. Past the halfway mark, however, the plot picks up, and I became more invested. Despite that, I think this was only an OK story. The writing is fine, and I liked the characters well enough. But there’s nothing particularly new or interesting here. Vera’s reluctance to use her magic (an essential plot point) didn’t really hold up to scrutiny. Was her history really any more traumatic than the rest of the Forsaken? And everything happened too quickly and too easily. I liked it enough to read another Rodilosso book, but not enough to rush out and find one.

This book has some really interesting mythology! Getting into Vera's story and the fantasy traditions that spur it forward, beginning on Solstice Eve, was fascinating. As the darkness in Adrilla unspools itself as Vera's lightness comes to the forefront I found myself more and more deeply invested. It's clear in order to deal with being not only Bloodbound, but Foresaken, Vera has leveled up for even more adventures. This first book was a fun, fast read and fingers crossed we get to see more from the characters we met and the complex work I explored.

Bound by blood and oath: Amazing! I had to force myself to put it down so I could sleep!

This may be her first published book, but it reads like one by an accomplished writer of many best sellers. It's not a genre I'm usually attracted to, but unce I started I couldn't put it down! I look forward to seeing her next book( s ) . I wouldn't even be surprised to see it made into a movie! Great characters, easy to follow story line, a few surprising twists that only serve to captivate the reader! Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book. It's a perfect balance of romance and action/intrigue, with solid characters and worldbuilding. I also liked that it's a stand-alone story (I love series, but I have way too many started already). The heat level is fade-to-black with a hint of spice, similar to what I write so it's a comfortable level for me to read.

This book follows Vera, a woman who was banished from everything she knew as a child because she was a forsaken (has magic) and Kaius, War king for the ruthless sect of Forsaken. Vera enlists Kaius’s help to take their revenge on King Braedon after a surprise attack on her people.

For a debut, I was blown out of the water! I could not put this book down! It was excellently written and kept me engaged the entire way through. The character development was also fantastic. I fell so in love with all of the characters. Vera is someone who doesn’t trust easily. I love how real and raw she was. Kaius is a strong male character who has a vulnerable side but also doesn’t trust easily. Together they learn to trust one another and eventually fall in love.

As I was reading I had some theories but I couldn’t have been more wrong! You will not expect the twist in this book. It kept me on my toes the entire time.

I can’t wait to read more of Rachel’s books in the future.
