Jiu Hui was just an ordinary garlic chive spirit. Before she left the village, the other yaos in the village told her that some humans were racist, so she must never let others know that she was a yao.

In the world of self-cultivation, there were many immortal sects. Some sects were good at refining elixirs, some were good at sword cultivation, and some were good at divination. Only the sect that Jiu Hui worshipped was not only incapable of controlling yao monsters, but also had no sense of existence in other aspects.

This was a lovely read when you want something that soothes the soul. No stupid misunderstanding, no melodrama, no stupid jealousy plot. On the scale between idealism and cynicism, this story was slightly on the idealism side - it presented an optimistic view whilst still being grounded in reality.

The MC was shameless and opportunistic, but the way the story was written she never came across as annoying, which was interesting as I normally disliked this type of character. She's also overpowered for who she was, but she never abused that power over those weaker, so I didn't mind her OP-ness.

ML was simply lovely. The best part about the novel was watching the ML's growth from being an isolated existence, slowly learning what happiness was, appreciating the small things in life and being grateful for them. The journey was more about the ML than the MC, but that's OK, it was a wonderful journey.

Pacing was good and balanced, and romance occurred as the natural conclusion. Not forced or sudden, just the result of close proximity and daily interactions. The story chose to show ML's growing fondness via small actions, which I found really endearing.

My only complaint was that I needed more side stories...

As expected from one of my favorite authors, I Am Average and Unremarkable seems to be an easygoing read but it actually deals with the deepest and darkest human emotions and feelings.

Both of our protagonists were victims of the so-called righteousness — one was forced to be the savior of the world by using her heart, flesh, and bones to refine the cauldrons while the other one was forced to act like a filter to protect the three realms and bear for the whole world. Both Jiu Hui and Zhi You deserved to live their lives the way they wanted to and should not have been expected to sacrifice their own for everyone.

Sacrificing one to save many should never be the norm because that one person has their own feelings, emotions, and desires to live their own life. Believing that it is okay to sacrifice one person is so bigoted when everyone should contribute for everyone’s well-being. The safety of all beings should always have been a collective responsibility of every person and not just depend on one person.

The resolution of the story was so complex and detailed. I loved it so much. If this novel was not able to make you a better being, then there might be something wrong with you. I always believe that I learn new things in every novel I read, one of the many things I have learned from here is that you make your own fate and you should never let others tell you otherwise. It is your own life so you should pave your own path.

1/13/25 TBH I'm not sure if I finished this on the 10th or 11th, I do know I stayed up WAY too late cuz I was just like "I WANT TO GET THIS DONE" ... the problem was the translator site wasn't good with putting chapters in order so clicking "next chapter" was a bit of a crap shoot. Also, sadly while I REALLY like this author she's not so good with the endings *sigh* so it kinda ... bleh like it could've been SO GREAT but instead a smidge ended on a disappointment. I mean it's a happy ending but it more felt like it petered out and there were some loose threads and more that didn't make sense like "who? what? huh? ... ok well it's over so whatever ... I guess?"
I did love FL though. What a nice green tea bitch? LOL it's hard to describe her -but the shamelessness and winning in pretty much everything ... heh I admire her and am jealous and would LOVE to be her.
ML had almost alarming love brain - so much so that :X I ... I dunno he was too one dimensional? Not exactly a romance, so that was missing for me.
Still, really liked it though other than those points I brought up - laughed, cried, will DEFINITELY re-read it.

I Am Average and Unremarkable

1 FL is Jiu Hui?

5 😹😹😹☠️☠️☠️ her “look I’m being so good to you by killing you together since you’re brothers” to the 3 bat yao

7 … ok now I think I shoulda written down what c FL killed that demon with the butcher knife. (HOW?!)
(Also what’s up with Zhi You?)

8 lol this casually super wealthy FL 😹☠️ and she has no clue

10 why didn’t sect master Yu Jing let ZY bow to her esp after she said she wanted him to be her disciple?

12 awww 🥹🥹🥹 *noises* when FL & ZY “send their shifu letters” ❤️❤️❤️

14 Ok so FL is 2 months from being 18
😹☠️ I love how shameless the sect master is

15 omg I am HOWLING LOL like normally I’d hate such shameless behavior but the other sect was the one that started it by smashing their boat/expecting everyone else to make way… FL’s sect extorted so much by acting bullied lolololol

19 no but a) how is FL tricking everyone despite being a yao (is it cuz she’s a garlic chive not an animal?) and … how is she so powerful?!

31 Who exactly is ZY, and how is he so powerful (and rich) despite supposedly having like aptitude or whatever from that judging stone?!

36 Interesting. FL wants to learn how to be a human being.
(😅🫠 lowkey skimmed this one…)

37 I wonder what ZY’s actual level is since he actually reached Nascent Soul @ 11 and it seems he’s maybe in his 20s? (Also I kinda feel like he’s somehow tied to the Fungus g who guards/feeds the cauldrons?) 🤷🏻‍♀️
I also wonder if FL truly is just at nascent soul…
😹☠️ I need FL’s skills

(38?)Ok FL is definitely the “grass” that helped ML find his mother’s grave - so he’s four years older than her (I think?) ML has got to be ZY! He’s already been so protective of FL! Did he join a sect cuz he knew she would?! (Or he’s five years older?)

39 whut… demon love brain thing what?

42 😱😱😱 FL was supposed to be the next (immortal) Gan tree but was born 400 years late and became an “immortal herb” … <.< I dunno I don’t think of garlic chive as an herb?
Omg uncle Wu (the crow) secretly giving her 500 years of cultivation & a pile of spirit stones and it’s “not considered spoiling her” 😅😻
Oh my god nearly a million spirit stones… AND ten top grade defensive magic treasures
Hm author error? Or? Cuz FL originally only told the sect she got 100k… did she fess up cuz uncle Wu gave her a lot?

(49?? 47?) Oof all the advice from the elders before they go to FL’s village ❤️❤️❤️ and “Our Wangshu Pavilion is a small sect, and no one cares whether we have integrity or not.” Elder Lin stroked his white beard. “But we elders care about whether you can live a good life.”

50 OH NOOOOO already halfway done?! I’M NOT READY.
And her homecoming is ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

51 oh my god Zhi You experiencing life & the ShangHuang village adopting him & giving him a key & him realizing the banquet is being held in his honor ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Ahh I KNEW IT! I *KNEW* grandpa Long is a real dragon!!!
(Def c 53) oh ZY ““I have no relatives, no home, and no way. After joining Wangshu Pavilion, I met you, and only then did I understand what joy and anger are.”
“They say I’m a pretty boy, they say I’m a lackey, whatever.” Zhi You looked at Jiu Hui. “In this world, there was originally nothing or no one I cared about, and no one cared about me.”
“You taught me happiness, anger, sadness, and joy. You taught me how to be a living person and gave me a home in Shanghuang Village.” Zhi You held out a handful of peeled pomegranate seeds to Jiu Hui. “I don’t care about anything else, whether it’s humans, demons, or yaos. As long as I have you, Little Senior Sister, that’s all that matters.””

54 oh no! Someone has betrayed FL!

55 lol I’m glad Lord FuGuang (ML) beat up that shit Bu Ting of the JiuTian sect.
Heh the peacock who has a crush on FL & keeps pestering them

😱😱😱😱😱 “He gouged out his own heart, split his own soul, dodged heavy surveillance and formations, and gained his freedom.” 😭😭😭 (FL figuring out ML/ZY is actually FG)

60 I love our petty king 😹💯

65 omg FL might just be my favorite chaos muppet 😱😹☠️ (was Jin He the guy who tried to save FL & ML?)

67 omg she killed the demon king so easily

79 FL finally figured out she’s ML’s little garlic chive

80 “Jiu Hui’s heart trembled slightly. Because of a dream, he had gouged out his heart, attached his soul to the body refined from his heart, endured the pain that pierced his bones, and came to this chaotic world of mortal dust all by himself.” - She better stop having her temper tantrum at him!!!

83 I’m glad we get an explanation for Yu Luan and it’s not just that FL’s ~first cultivator friend looked down on her for joining a minor sect

85 Oo their shifu Yu Jing sending ML back - I think she knows his actual identity…

Blergh I might’ve read 97 & 98 out of order cuz the wonky site
Maybe more? 😖

Oh extra 3 ❤️ ““Knowing her, I will never be alone. Heaven and earth may end, but this love will never die.”
“With the vow of eternity, I ask the Heavenly Dao to witness.”
“The light wine is prepared, and we look forward to your visit.””

I Am Average and Unremarkable

(English Translated Title)

3.8 ⭐

One of my favorite authors' recently written novel caught my eye so I gave it a go. And I kinda have mixed feelings.

Let's talk about the pros first.

The storyline, itself, was great (except the end, which I'll talk about later). There's not much plotholes. The twists and turns were also interesting.

The female lead, Jiu Hui, was humorous and easy-going. Her antics were a delight to read.

Even the male lead, Zhi You, made my eyes wet with tears. He just wanted some love and freedom. So glad that he got to meet all the senior brother and sisters of the Wangshu Pavillion, and most of all, meet Jiu Hui😭😭

I loved the side characters! Special shoutout to Nan Feng and Shiyi.

The emotional scenes also brought tears to my eyes many times over. I can't get over these😭😭

Even the Shenhuang Village was fascinating. I loved the bond between all the yaos.

Dahuang and the squirrel yao have my heart.

Now, let's talk about the cons.

The ending? Rushed! It felt like the author didn't give too much consideration of how it'd end and she just wanted to be done with it.

The romance often took the backseat. Except for some scenes, there was barely any romance. The fluff between the main leads was so less that it even got overshadowed by the tragic love stories of the side characters. The bits that I liked about the romance part was only because of Zhi You's backstory and his sacrifice and preserverance.

The novel as a whole was overly idealistic. If you like grey morality in your reading, then it's not for you. Honestly, because of the absence of this element, I wanted to roll my eyes at times. True, Bu Ting was wrong and I'm glad that he got his just desserts. But we could have explored his psyche instead of straight-up labeling him as the bad guy.

It's mostly a happy-go-lucky novel so I guess I can't expect much. And the author even said that she was getting out of a writing slump after a sad thing happened in her life, so I guess I understand where she's coming from.

Would I recommend it? Maybe.

Will I reread it again? Nope!

Overall, I am kinda disappointed but I also enjoyed my reading time. Anyway, still looking forward to reading her other novels in the future!

The translator was also great!

Google translated

Sweet “clash of cultures” romance between a lucky ginseng, born as a human and a sickly young novel. So sweet your teeth will hurt but also, super funny!

I read a fan translation of the Chinese original. I think this is being made into a cdrama!
