I teach a college writing prep course for high school students and have found this book to be a valuable asset. Its language is approachable and students appreciate the visual examples peppered throughout and the helpfully bullet-pointed summaries and lists. It works best as a supplement to a curriculum rather than the core text, as teachers will find some sections inevitably out of date (such as the one on MLA).

I bought this book along with a few others on writing for the compositional courses I teach. Writing, communication, and stylistic skills are becoming more difficult for students due to many factors. As an educator in this area, I am constantly thinking through new ways to provide valuable resources, knowledge, and accessibility to students. This book is a recent read that I believe will be a valuable asset to my students and provided some valuable insight into the organization of my class syllabus. It is a quick, simplistic read that provides an onslaught of information in a clear succinct way and also uses examples of the information within its pages. My only issue with the book is the over-focus on simple grammatical issues and lack of focus on stylistic issues. Everything else is helpful to college students and perhaps earlier writers as well. I highly recommend this quick read to anyone interested in the college writing process.

I am a 25 year old in the middle of my Bachelors of Communications degree and it took me this book to realize my mindset is still in writing high school papers. I started my degree several plus years past high school and this book has actually helped a lot in giving me a new perspective on how to improve my writing. This book really for people who haven’t written college level work either ever or in years, or freshly graduated students from high school. Definitely would recommend.

Has some new, to me, ideas. Good for inexperienced writing students.

"Essential" is just that, an essential book for the aspiring college students (or, at least the one who wants to get an "A" in freshman composition). The book is systematic and well laid out. It tackles the complexities of writing in clear language with real student examples.
