Carnival of Mysteries

Blue Lightning

Rate this book
Cole Ryan is bored. He’s lived in the same small town his whole life and has the same job. Nothing changes there and every morning when he goes for a run, those thoughts echo on repeat through his mind. Until today, on this day, something big happens and if he survives it, his life won’t be the same. Maybe boring old Hickory Crossing wasn’t so bad after all.

Driving in the rain, on his way to a delivery, Bobby Sanders is focused on the road, when a flash of blue light in the distance catches his eye. He witnesses a bolt of lightning strike a man running on the road ahead of him. He never suspected that bolt of lightning could change both their lives, not just the poor guy who was blown out of his shoes right in front of him.

When the persistent sound of whispering won’t go away, Cole questions his sanity. But maybe he’s not the only one experiencing strange things.

This is a new series for me, and I won't be back.

While it started ok, it really quickly got a little bit too weird. And by weird, it's really that things didn't make sense. For example, he goes to the hospital, the staff says he's unconscious, then they start talking to him in the next paragraph, and he answers them. Um, what?!?!? How is that possible? Because the definition of unconscious is "when a person is unable to respond to people and activities."

It was hard to come back from this for me. I pushed through, gave it a shot, and it didn't work. Oh well...

A fantastic novel to read. I loved the ununiqueness of the storyline, especially the ending.

Destined For More

This one just kept getting more and more interesting the further I got into the story. I read through this quickly. I just had to see what was coming next for Cole and Bobby. It all made for an interesting and entertaining story.
Update: The audiobook made the story even more entertaining. I loved the narration by Guy Veryzer.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Getting hit by lightning was never like this, or at least that's what Cole thought until it happened to him. The blue lightning that struck Cole didn't kill him but it changed him, awoke something inside him and spilled over to his rescuer, Bobby. Bobby certainly didn't expect to be linked to Cole when he saw him blown off the road by blue lightning. Figuring out what has happened consumes them as they explore their romantic feelings. Will they survive the powers of darkness that threaten them? Will they find a connection beyond the magic that has bound them together?.

Blue Lightning is a part of the multi-author series Carnival of Mysteries. This is a wonderful story. Through a strange quirk of fate. The MCs' lives are changed forever. Magic abounds as they work their way to happily ever after.

Having not read this story prior to listening it took me a while to get into the story. It was a bit unclear what to expect. But it turns out more and more details paint a story of secrets and unexplained events and happenings. Bobby & Cole find out what seems to be happening and are i.m.o. destined to be together I found the paranormal aspect in this book was more prevalent than the romance. I felt the paranoral storyline was left on a bit of a cliffhanger.4-

Audiobook:
Narration: Guy Veryzer was i.m.o. not a good fit for this story. I don't know the age of the narrator. To me his voice sounds like a feeble old man which did not fit for me. The MC's are young and vital and it took effort to 'hear' the story through the voice. I appreciate the narrator might get instructions from the author, but this did not work for me. 2,5*

Overall: 3*

'Blue Lightning: Carnival of Mysteries' written by B.L. Maxwell, (Audible) narrated by Guy Veryzer

Some books in this series are really wonderful, while a couple of them ended up in that category of "why did I spend my money on this dreck?"
This is in that latter category, sad to say, as I really was anticipating a great storyline based on the blurbs, but it didn't live up to the hype.

Luckily most of the books in this series are good to frikkin' amazing!
I haven't read all the books in this series, yet, but it's my mission to read them all (at least the ones available on formats I can access...not you, Kindle!).

Anyway, I started out listening to this on the Audible version and am so disappointed! It starts out interestingly enough, but the narrator's voice is annoying to the nth degree! Listening to it makes me feel like I'm hearing a 95-year old man nattering on and on about something that happened a long time ago. Well the problem wouldn't be listening to an elder tell stories, it's just this particular guy's voice is super cringe-worthy! And, there's hardly any discernible differences between all the different character's voices; they just don't sound like healthy guys in their 30s. The voice sounds decrepit, like he's a long-time chain smoker. He was absolutely the wrong narrator for this book!
It got so annoying that I stopped listening after the first couple chapters or so because his voice set my teeth on edge!

(I will wait for book delivery; hope it comes across as better than the auditory.)
UPDATE: Got the book, read the book, and it's better than trying to listen to it on Audible, but overall I didn't really like this book. Unfortunately the premise was better than the execution.

It's about this guy, Cole, who's out for his daily early morning run when a freak thunderstorm appears overhead out of nowhere (with oddly tinged blue clouds) and then a blue bolt of lightning ZAPS! the runner, tossing him into the air, then flinging him to the side of the road about 10 feet away...covered in ash, hair singed and smoking, minus his running shoes which the outline of appears to be in the middle of the highway melted to the tarmac!

A van delivery driver (Bobby) driving down the road towards Cole witnesses the whole thing, stops in the middle of the road, puts his van on idle and jumps out, running over to the lightning-struck guy to see if he can help him, but expecting him to be dead.

Imagine his shock to see the man is alive although dazed! But when lightning-guy opens his mouth to speak in answer to the truck driver's query, "Are you ok?", black smoke proceeds to pour out of his mouth!

Great beginning! Cringy narration.

(since it's the audio version I'm currently annoyed with, I will wait for the book to arrive and commence reading)
UPDATE: 10/26/25: finished reading the book. Have mixed feelings about it as the premise is great, but the carry-through seems stilted and awkward. I liked the unusual beginning up until they got to the hospital where things started to get really bizarre (and not in a good way).

Throughout the book I felt like I was being obliquely lectured on religion by a 5th grader who was presenting themselves as morally "pure" but actually had no real understanding of how complex the universe can be.

There was a lot of filler as both guys hashed and re-hashed the same questions around in their heads, as well as between them when they were talking either in person or on the phone. It got boring. The writing lacked passion and I struggled to get through the whole middle of the book. The "romance" was barely there.

They did make it to the carnival, but hardly spent any time at all there. Errante Ame's (the carnival owner, who may be other than human) personality seemed very different from how he has been portrayed in the other books in this series. More standoffish and seemingly not interested in the guys beyond a cursory conversation.

Yeah, even though the books in this series are written by various authors, until this book there was a consistent portrayal of the carnival people's personalities (author collaboration?). This time the carnival owner seemed really "off"; I can't figure out how to explain this more clearly, probably because I kept feeling confused throughout the storyline.

I don't know...there just wasn't enough depth to any of the characters and the plot dragged on and on, repeating basically the same thoughts from both guys, like the author was trying to get to a specific word count or something. Boring.

And the ending was basically like a pulling a rabbit out of a hat, amidst big personality changes for both guys. A "Deus ex machina"!*

*(Deus ex machina is a Latin phrase for "god from a machine. It's a person or thing (as in fiction or drama) that appears or is introduced suddenly and unexpectedly and provides a contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty)

It was oddly done, more like a school kid's version of a horror story, lacking nuance and substance, passion, lacking...something ...something that ultimately made the reader feel removed from the storyline and only able to watch remotely and dispassionately, instead of being right there in the midst of the situations experiencing them alongside the guys.

And the whole thing with the mother and the aunt and the nephew was confusing and never explained very well. Needs more details on how that whole "witchy" generational thing worked. Too vague allusions to "magic stuff".

Oh, another thing is: I usually love the interesting way the artist for this series has been rendering the covers for this whole series, except...not this cover. I didn't like the choice of the male model for this one because he doesn't look like the way either character is described; he looks too old for either one of them, both of whom are supposedly in their 30s.

(just one more nitpicky annoyance that I disliked about this book)

So, this book just didn't fly for me!

"The end or is it?"

This is the first book I've read/listened to in this multi-authored series, Carnival of Mysteries. Normally a series like this would be right up my alley and I think it was the book covers that were messing with me, I don't really care for them. When this opportunity came up on Booksprout, to listen and review this story by BL Maxwell, I thought now is my opportunity to check it out. I'm so glad that I took this opportunity and now I'm interested in reading/listening to more books in this series.

When I read the book blurb and it said that one of the main characters gets hit by lightning I was all in. There were some parts that were a bit chilling and gave me some goosebumps. The narrator did a great job with the voices, this was the first book I've listened to by him. This is about the 4th or 5th book I've read or listened to by this author and I've really enjoyed all of them.

All in all it was a fun fairly short listen. It kept me in the story the entire time, which I loved. Some audio books I've listened to do not hold my attention so I'm always happy when I'm captivated.

I'd love to see this book made into its own series. I think this author could really do something with it.

Age gap, unlikely heroes, mysteries abound, you shouldn't mess around with things you don't understand, brings some heat

Blue Lightning is a standalone MM paranormal romance by BL Maxwell, and is the first book in the series Carnival of Mysteries. The said carnival doesn't play the biggest role in the story, but it does bring an integral piece to help the main characters figure out the mystery that is plaguing them.

Set in small town USA, this is a story that brings together two strangers in an extraordinary way. Local man, Bobby Sanders is minding his own business, driving, when he is struck by lightning. Newbie to that corner of the world, Cole Ryan witnesses the amazing moment Bobby is struck. When Cole decides to help Bobby, which ultimately snowballs into something a lot more mysterious and potentially dangerous.

This is a sweet romance that focuses on the mystery and the danger as Bobby and Cole try and figure out exactly what was up with the mystical lightning and what this could do to both of them. Especially since their hearts are on the line. This is a magical world that feels both natural and full of possibility.

3.5 This review for the audio book narrated by Guy Veryzer. The narrator gave a fine performance and had distinct voices for each character, including an accent for Bobby that suited him, but wasn't over the top. My main issue is that the narrator sounded rather older than the characters themselves. This was an issue in a previous book I heard as well.

The story itself was intriguing - clearly, being struck by lightning is going to change a person and this wasn't just any lighting, but blue lightning. Bobby rescued Cole after he was struck and took him to the hospital, where things start to get rather eerie and suspenseful. I enjoyed the paranormal elements and while the Carnival of Mysteries isn't a huge presence, it is important because that's where Cole and Bobby finally get some answers. While I would have liked a bit more in terms of the romance, overall the story kept my attention and kept me reading. I hope the author will explore these characters more in a future book, or that we will see them again.

In a Flash!

Cole Ryan is an average guy. Working as a manager of a sporting goods store, living in the community where he grew up, he has a comfortable life. Until the morning when he’s struck by lightning while on his early morning run. Fortunately, Bobby Sanders happens to be passing by, on his way to make a delivery from his family’s printing business. So begins an epic adventure of discovery, with strange experiences happening to both Cole and Bobby. It was interesting to watch their romance also slowly develop, as they worked to understand what their experiences meant.

I enjoyed this story, as the author drew me into the small-town world of Cole and Bobby, slowly introducing the other characters, leading to the big reveal near the end. I especially appreciated the Irish psychic, Saorise, who helps Cole understand his gift, and how his life has changed – literally – in a flash! This is a excellent addition to the collection of stories in the Carnival of Mysteries universe.

I am a big fan of BL Maxwell. They manage to create new and different fantasy worlds with seeming ease. In Blue Lightning, part of the Carnival of Mysteries series, they take the carnival into a supporting role so the story focuses on Cole, struck by blue lightning, and Bobby, helpful stranger. At its heart, the story is about the transformations both go through, to a lesser or greater extent. I enjoyed the contrast between their everyday working lives and the changes brought about by the lightning. I also liked that both men had healthy relationships with their families and that helped support them in the challenges they faced. Without giving anything away, the denouement went in a direction I did not see coming. The problem with an author who tends to write series is that I want to see more of this world and these characters, not to say the book is not self-contained because it is. Trapped in an endless daily cycle, Cole Ryan thought his life was going to be forever dull until one day he is struck by blue lightning and meets Bobby Sanders.

This is a whirlwind adventure of two normal every day guys thrust into a world of magic and gods.

I loved the low angst relationship between Cole and Bobby even though they had a huge mess to untangle.

This book kept me turning the pages and when I did reach the end it made me sad I had to say goodbye to these two. Hopefully not forever but just for now.

BL Maxwell has once again delivered an amazing story and I can’t wait for their next book!!.

Cole was out running when he was hit by blue lighting Bobby saw it happen and him to the hospital. When there Cole said a saying the the thunder caused things to happen so Bobby took Cole home. They went to talk to a woman Cole knew but really didn’t get any information just to put a sign on his windows and doors but Bobby erased them when his told what they meant. The storm was made to give the woman the blue lighting power but it hit Cole before she got to that point. They talked to Bobby mother’s medium friend and was told what to use the power for but it had to used with them together.

Be careful what you wish for. Cole, lives his life keeping his head down day after day, totally bored. He goes out running, emotionally stuck in his rut. Bobby, is on the road on a delivery run when he notices a jogging man struck by lightening and thrown out of his shoes. Nothing is ever the same for either man. Their ordinary everyday boredome ends at that moment. The men are drawn into an adventure in their small town while getting to meet other men who experience the extraordinary. Fun story, likeable characters with nice external characters. Cole and Bobby experience a lot of new things and are never bored again. Nicely done. I enjoyed this book. The storyline was interesting and I loved the whole mystery of it. A character getting hit by lightning- blue lightning for that matter- was an interesting enough way to bring the two guys together. But when Bobby brings Cole to the hospital, it's anything but ordinary. Gods, magic, mediums. These two certainly went on a journey. I also liked their families and the supporting characters.

Guy Veryzer did a good job narrating this book (though I needed to listen to it with an increased speed because at normal speed he just sounds too slow.)

Performance: 3 stars

I loved this story. The instant connection between these men was incredible and I am so glad that I got to read this story. The fact that these men happened to be in the same place at the same time and Bobby came to make sure Cole was alive once he witnessed him being struck by lightning. The fact that Bobby turned out to be Cole’s sword and Cole the shield for them both was amazing and I didn’t even think about that at all until the end. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves mm romance stories that really get you thinking.

Cole Ryan's life is average and boring...until it isn't. After he is struck by blue lightning in a freak storm, his whole life changes. He starts hearing whispers. Is he crazy or is it something bigger? The lightning changes Bobby Sander's life, too, when he stops to help Cole. This fun and intriguing story is part of the Carnival of Mysteries series, although each book in the series is independent and stands alone. It's an enjoyable, low-angst read with great MCs and supporting characters.

Cole is jogging when a fast moving storm comes his way. He is struck by lightening and is knocked about 10 feet into the ditch. Bobby a delivery driver for a printing company see it happen. He helps Cole and brings him to the hospital. This wasn’t regular lightening but blue. From this point strange things start happening, including blue flames sparking his body to hearing things in his head. This storyline is full of magic, demons, angels, psychics both good and bad, but ends with love.

Another adventure at the carnival but this time our time is spent outside of the big top. Lots of excitement, once again, as the evil that exists tries to capture what isn’t theirs. Strong characters battle and after the dust settles claim their very own HEA. The journey is exiting, the characters are strong and the story moves along pretty quickly. Some twists to keep you reading.

I really enjoyed Cole and Bobby's story.
Cole is bored with the same day to day. Nothing ever happens until one day is he running and out of no where a storm appears and he is hit with blue lightening.
Bobby is on his way to a customers when he sees Cole get hit with the lightening. He goes to Coles aid and neither of them realized that they were about to be pulled into something unbelievable and life changing.

This is a well written book with strong characters in Cole and Bobby. The author does a great job developing the story and painting her scenes perfectly. She takes you into their lives with humor, action, emotions and magic and kept me turning the pages with all the happenings. She moves the story fluidly and delivers a terrific read.

Be careful what you wish for...

You just might get it.
Cole has been lamenting his boring life when he's suddenly struck by weird blue lightning.
Luckily for him, Bobby happened to be working nearby and saw everything.
Things only get weirder as Cole undergoes a strange transformation.
There's lots of strange happenings going on, but thankfully, they're able to keep each other safe.

I have enjoyed reading books from this multi author series and this was another really good story that kept my interest from the beginning to the end. I liked Cole and Bobby who met by chance when Cole was struck by blue lightning and how they slowly fell in love amid the mysteries and dangers they faced while their lives are changing and how they eventually found Saorise the psychic who helped Cole learn about his gift.Good read.

Audiobook - very enjoyable narrator, although for me, the scary and emotional situations didn't always quite show in the acting. The general voice used sounded older than the MCs.
Story - interesting world building, the blue lightning and paranormal aspects were good. The MCs were really very sweet and were very supportive of each other. They were brave in a way no one would ever expect to have to be, and very selfless.

This was such a fun read! Cole and Bobby were both just ordinary guys living boring ordinary lives until they get bonded together by Lightning! First time for this kind of meet cute for sure. I adored both of these guys, and it was funny seeing them get more than ever could have wished for excitement wise. Lots of chaos, magic and weird situations but their relationship is cute and wonderful!
