The choice is hers… But what if she didn’t have to choose?
When twenty-one-year-old Penelope Frey is chosen to travel to Oresteia, her coastal Kingdom’s rival land, she must put aside her life’s wishes to search for what has been presumably stolen. Now surrounded by Oresteia’s cold exterior, Penelope discovers their Kingdoms are on the brink of collapsing.
As Penelope strives to save her Kingdom, she finds herself trapped between two worlds. Can she recover what they claim she stole? Or will she doom their worlds into nonexistence?

I was impressed by this book! The world building was vivid and kept my attention throughout the story. I enjoyed the plot and felt connected to the characters!
While this book was a little overly descriptive at times, i do feel like it painted a good picture of each scene to help me better picture what was happening. I also really wish I could’ve seen more of their story at the end. It felt a little rushed to me, and knowing the second book won’t continue from where this one left off makes me wish i could’ve seen a wedding or a look further into their future.
I will definitely read the second one! I love Penelope!
While romance is not my favorite, this book did not disappoint with its contrast of being a fantasy as well. Something both parties will heavily enjoy. This book screams its artistry with world building, character development, and a perfect resolution to the story explored. All these things shine while recent stories in movies and other books lack these important story basics. While romance isn’t my favorite, there is a fine boundary with what romance is brought forward, I actually rooted for it… and it’s young adult friendly. I left this book inspired to expand my genre reading, and looking forward to the second book in this series that will explore an opposing decision Penelope Frey makes and tackling the “what if.” But also feeling very satisfied with my time invested in this world, characters, and plot line.
This is such an impressive debut novel! The way Macayla writes is so poetic. She paints pictures and phrases in your mind that feel like a work of art.
The world building and character development was incredible. Everything made so much sense! It was really easy to follow.
The story did feel a tad rushed to me. This also could be because I’m used to reading giant fantasy novels. I would have loved a little bit more suspense and drama to the big reveal.
The world building in this book is fantastic! I found myself picturing the story very easily. I would say this is a young adult romance with some fantasy. There are some poetic parts in the book that really emphasizes the scenes/emotions which I really enjoyed. “Our proximity is palpable, the air between us filled with an electric tension that crackles and hums its own song”. I was hoping there would be more story behind the fantasy side of this but overall I really enjoyed the story.
I could not put this book down and read it in one night! This book was written so well and had SUCH a good story line. I was torn between wanting to read it slowly and savor it to make it last, and wanting to read it as fast as possible to see what would happen! 10/10 recommend.
I loved this book! I fell in love with all the characters, I fell in love with everything about this book. It needs soo much recognition! I started it because I seen the author on TikTok! I fell in love with this book and will now forever recommend this book!
This book was written by a good friend of mine, and I’m so impressed at her ability to not only finish writing a book (which is no easy task) but also to have so much joy in her story that it was evident to me as a reader. If you are a romance/fantasy reader and want something new and fresh, as well as fast-paced, maybe think about trying The Mountain’s Crown Duology (oh yeah, theres a second book coming out SOON)
As far as debut novels go, Macayla knocked it out of the park! The details were incredible and I’m so impressed with the intentionality she put into this story. Any changes I would make to this book are pretty minor. Overall, I really enjoyed this book & I will definitely read the next book she writes :) Also as a side note this was such a relief after reading such a lengthy fantasy book lol.
this is really a 3.5 stars. this reminded me of the kind of books that originally got me into reading! it felt very nostalgic even though i’ve never read it. excited to read the arc for the second one
omg this was soo good! I read this because I received an ARC for book two, so i wanted to read this first. I got hooked into this story so quickly, i loved it! I love that book is a “what if” if the main character made a different choice. I am so excited to read book two!
I read this a preclude to my very first ARC read — The Dagger’s Tide!
Overall: I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the progression of this story! The plot twist(s) really got me, I have to say😂.
Genre: I was a fan of the clean fantasy, and it was a refreshing change from my usual reads.
Characters: The characters were interesting and very likable, with Selene being my favorite— until that twist because hello?! totally didn’t see it coming at all😀
World building: I believe the foundation effectively laid the groundwork for what I anticipate will be a beautiful book verse! I loved the coastal kingdom / mountain kingdom idea and it gave me a nostalgic feeling reminding me of Secret of the Wings! 🪽❄️🏖️
Looking forward to beginning my Dagger’s Tide ARC read now that I’ve read the first one in order 😁

Read this originally because I received the second book as an ARC, but let me tell you - this book sucked me in! The world is something that I haven’t read before and I loved it. There’s nothing like an easy to follow fantasy. Cannot wait to read book 2!
I read this book in one sitting, which really captures the ease in which a reader can jump into the plot and root for the main character Penelope. This story is fast paced and sweet and I enjoyed it!
I am an ARC reader for the second book in the Fated Paths Duology: The Dagger’s Tide, and I’m so excited to read it this week! (I’m team William so I’m already anxious to see the dynamic between Penelope and Callious…)
Overall I love the concept of fated paths and the idea that readers can explore alternate endings to the same story.
The Mountain’s Crown was such an engaging read! From the very first chapter, I was hooked and flew through it. The pacing was quick, which kept me turning the pages, and the world-building painted a vivid picture that was easy to sink into. I also really enjoyed the plot—there were a few surprises and twists that kept things exciting without ever feeling forced.
Overall, it’s a solid fantasy with a compelling story and immersive world. Definitely worth the read if you’re looking for something fast-paced and engaging!
I am about to start book two as an ARC reader cannot wait!!
Fun royal characters, fast paced plot, poetic descriptions, overall an enjoyable, easy read for fantasy lovers. There are funny moments, mystery and magic - what's not to love!
I am especially intrigued by this "choose your own adventure" concept for the duology. I thought it was a super creative concept. In this book, the princess goes to the enemy kingdom to help find a stolen artifact. I am excited to read book two and learn what would've happened if she hadn't gone and war broke out.
While I know this was intended for a more YA audience, there were some aspects that were resolved too quickly at the end, romance that developed without any significant foundation, and world building that was never really explained enough for me. Additionally, there were far too many paragraph breaks. It definitely made the book more readable since most paragraphs were no more than 3 sentences, but it sometimes led to the writing feeling choppy and confusion on which character was speaking or acting.
None of these negatives broke me away from the story, though, and I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a quick fantasy read, or a clean romantasy targeting a younger audience!
Congrats to Macayla for a debut novel that she should be very proud of!
This YA fantasy debut is book one of a duology, The Fated Paths. It’s all about choices—and how they ripple through a story.
We follow Penelope, the youngest princess of the Frey family, who finds herself suddenly packing her bags for Orestia, the rival kingdom to her home of Paralia. Leaving behind a potential love, she steps into a new world that challenges her with unexpected friendships, fragile trust, and the weight of loyalty.
This story has so much of what I love in fantasy: forbidden love, misunderstandings, and the bonds of friendship. There’s just the right balance of magic and romance to keep things comforting yet engaging.
And let’s talk about Prince William of Orestia—if you’re searching for a golden retriever prince, here he is. Gentle, patient, loyal, and very human—he doesn’t just give his trust away, it has to be earned. Watching him and Penelope together was such a treat.
I also adored the thread of girlhood woven throughout—women supporting women, reminding us that we stand stronger together. On the flip side… Penelope’s dad? Yeah, I can’t stand him.
Dawn weaves a beautiful tale of adventure and romance in THE MOUNTAIN’S CROWN. The lush descriptions of the kingdoms were enthralling. This book felt like a cozy fairytale I’ve been waiting to find!
I cannot express how beautifully written this book is! One of my favorite quotes was:
“When we are but dust on the wind, no one will spread stories regarding your deepest terrors. Instead, they will speak of your bravery, your kindness, your honesty. They will talk of how you rose above an impossible situation and stayed true to yourself.”
I honestly might have to reread this book just to bask in the sun of Paralia and see the stars of Oresteia…
I enjoyed reading this book. Macayla Dawn’s writing is absolutely beautiful, which is a major thing I look for in a book. I could not believe this was a debut novel.
I felt this book was a bit rushed at times. I really enjoyed the world building - Macayla Dawn has a way with words! However, I felt there were a few main plot points, such as Pen’s magic, that weren’t fully fleshed out… where did her magic come from? Was it because Selene had the Queen’s Heart?
At the beginning of the book, Penelope is faced with the choice of visiting Oresteia to save her Kingdom from war, or run with Callious and go to war against Oresteia. She chooses the former. Sounds like The Dagger’s Tide will be her life, if she had chosen to leave with Callious. WOW what a cool concept!!! I really like that idea, and I am thoroughly excited to read the book!

Wow, this was such a refreshing read. I really appreciated that the story didn’t lean too heavily into romance, but still gave us just enough banter to keep things fun and engaging. The pacing was tight, the character dynamics were sharp, and I flew through it in a single day…which hasn’t happened in a while!
If I had one wish, it’d be to see the magical elements developed a bit more deeply. That said, I know this is just the beginning of the series, and I’m thrilled to have been accepted to read the ARC of book two. The foundation that’s been laid for her magic is so intriguing, and I can’t wait to see how it evolves.
Fingers crossed I get to dive into the sequel today (hehe) because I’m hooked!
3 ★★★ "Why are you insecure about where your feet stand? The mountains do not apologize for taking up space, and neither should you."
I discovered this duology on Tik Tok where the author was looking for arc readers for the sequel, the Dagger's Tide. I didn't realize when I signed up to be an arc reader it was a sequel, however, I quickly got the Mountain's Crown on KU.
I enjoyed the story, and I liked our protagonists, but despite it being fast paced, I do feel like the story was rushed. Regardless, I am still looking forward to reading the Dagger's Tide.
I absolutely loved The Mountain’s Crown! From the very beginning, I felt connected to the story and couldn’t put it down. The way the main character develops throughout the book is truly inspiring. The author’s writing style is beautiful, easy to follow, and full of emotion, it made the fantasy and romance flow perfectly.
I’m not usually a fantasy lover, but this book opened the possibility for me to explore the genre more. Even though English isn’t my first language, I found it easy to understand, fast-paced, and captivating. Macayla Dawn is an incredibly talented writer, and I can’t wait to read more from her!
This book was so captivating! A romantasy (YA approved) that was fresh and new! Things I haven’t seen in other books! You fall in love with the characters and can’t wait to see what’s next for them! I love seeing a strong female lead, that is overlooked and proves that there is more to them than meets the eye. Penelope is just that! My heart warmed that Will so quickly could see that 🥲 This book also made me crave hot chocolate so bad🤤🤭
3⭐️ I really liked the concept of this book but it definitely felt rushed to me. While I do enjoy a fast paced read, this did not feel fully planned out to me in a way that made a convincing story. I also struggled at times with character’s reactions or responses to things going on in the book. They sometimes felt out of place or unrealistic.
With that being said, I do want to finish the duology and see how things end up for the main characters.
this was a good debut book!! well done macayla! the plot was interesting & fast paced, & it was easy to connect with the characters. i wish there was a bit more depth as i had felt that a lot of the story was pretty superficial - i didn’t have to think really hard or pay close attention to understand what was happening. which is great for those who needs a solid palate cleanser. i just love a deep & dense book. but overall, really fun! i’m excited to see what happens in book 2 :))
I am not a fantasy genre fan at all, but this book pulled me in right away. It was fun and exciting and not so far into fantasy that I wasn't interested. I love that the characters built a real relationship with each other throughout, drawing me into their lives. I would have never guessed this was a first time author!
I just finished this book and it is easily a five star read for me. Absolutely poetic writing, the world building is amazing and character development is right on plot. This book female main character is somebody that you find yourself loving instantly. This book was a fun read for me. I found myself giggling during some parts. Such a good book!!!
The plot for this book was BEAUTIFUL. I was engaged the entire time and wanted to get to the end while trying to savor the cute moments between Penelope and William.
I am very excited for The Dagger’s Tide, especially after how good this was!
Side note: I think it’s so cool the author is from Southeast Kansas, I am too!!

UM YES! If you need a a light-hearted fun read… this is perfect. You will fly through this book because the chapters are short and intriguing. The characters are all very sweet and darling. Definitely needs to be your next read 100%
LOVED this book. As someone who is not much of a fantasy reader, I couldn’t put it down. The characters and their personalities were spilling off the pages and I can’t recommend this read enough!! Beautifully done.
this was a super easy to follow & fast read book! everything was really described perfectly. i do wish we had a bit more time & that it was drawn out more towards the end since it felt a bit rushed. i also would’ve liked to know more about the magic & powers that others may have. definitely a fun read!
