Very cool so far. Story of a young man from Maryland who longed to be a poet/artist but followed the wishes/commands of his father (a Civil War veteran and retired surgeon general of the Navy) and graduated from West Point. Ended up going out west and to Oregon where his travel and military adventures commenced. He kept a "thin brown leather-bound 5" x 8" pocket notebook - thirty unnumbered lined blank pages ready to be filled by the exploring mind - a commonplace for beginning writers". Looking forward to journeying with the story of how he maintained his artistic pursuits amidst the demands of military life in the new west.
