Valhalla Boys: Marine Recon Sniper in Iraq

Rate this book
A young Marine recon sniper navigates the harrowing complexities of unconventional warfare in Iraq post-2006.

In 2006, the shock and awe campaign of securing the major cities had ended, and the Iraq War had moved into an alien phase for the operators of Black Flag One. With their motto “swift, silent, deadly,” the Marine operators of 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion were trained for unconventional warfare but they were tasked with holding and securing swathes of the country, facing Insurgents who were adapting their tactics to kill as many Coalition soldiers as possible using IEDs. It was a terrifying new phase of the war where every disturbed patch of dirt, every piece of rubbish, every civilian acting oddly could mean instant death.

Into this cauldron of hate came a young Marine recon sniper. Brennan Morton had been fascinated by war and the military as long as he could remember, and had signed up for the Marines as an enlisted after 9/11. Developed from writing undertaken at the suggestion of his VA therapist, his immersive memoir takes the reader through selection and training and the first patrol sweeping for caches, to endless night watches, and deadly IED attacks.

Unbelievably good! I have not read a book this outstanding in a very long time. Brennan holds our attention throughout the entirety of this book. From his early dreams of becoming a soldier to the reality of having to survive the front lines, Brennan faces the consequences that come with war as he relives the nightmares that only a soldier can truly know. Experience this book for yourself and discover just how extraordinary these men undoubtedly are. A must read!

I was thrilled to having been able to read an early manuscript of this book. The author drops you in the narrative as you are with him side by side experiencing his journey. The realness of Brennan’s experiences, his humor, and his insight, keeps the reader turning pages. I don’t read books like this, but I absolutely loved it and cannot wait for the official release in January 2025! Preordering! 👏🏻👏🏻

Having also been a sniper from the west side, this brought back both good and bad memories. Don’t stop writing brother, and keep up the good fight.

Edge of your seat ride through the whole book!

What a great book! I couldn't put it down! I'm left kinda speechless, this story's look into the horror of modern warfare and the comraderie of soldiers and the bond shared through laughter and pain... Its window into what our soldiers go through daily is an eye opening/sobering experience.

Excellent book about the Recon training and the practical application of that training in Iraq. The effects of the desert warfare on the mental and physical health of the Recon Marines.

This book opened my eyes to what it's like to enter the military and be shaped into a warrior. Brennan brings humor to every story, no matter how intense, from basic training to firefights and patrolling the front lines of Iraq. His memoir got me right in the feels. 10/10, highly recommend!
