When does loyalty become accessory to murder? The five Sinclair sisters lead a fairytale existence in the modeling school their mother founded in Cheyenne, Wyoming – until her murder in the summer of 1955 prompts them to hire private investigator Heebs Kelly and his little dog Chaucer.

The police have written Eleanor Sinclair’s death off as self inflicted based on the quantity of tranquilizers and diet pills she’d swallowed. They bristle at the suggestion anyone else was involved, but Heebs, as long on courage as he is unfazed by authority, soon comes to believe they missed things.

The victim, once a minor league New York model, was an arrogant tyrant with zero interest in being a mother. All her daughters (three singles and identical twins) had reasons to resent her. So did a few others. Then a second murder, more brutal than Eleanor’s, sends Heebs in new directions where lies swirl as thickly as grit kicked up by the Wyoming wind.

As he closes in on Eleanor’s killer, he must navigate the shifting alliances of the five beautiful Sinclair sisters, some of them hiding secrets and one possibly a murderer more than willing to strike again.

Detective Heebs Kelly has women trouble. To be precise, he has too many lying women, too many dead women, too many sisters with conflicting alibis, and altogether too much of a bad thing!

In this colorfully descriptive mystery set in the world of etiquette and fashion that makes you feel like you’re as much watching it as reading it, Heebs surely puts everything he learned from his mentor, Maggie, and his obvious maturing in the interim to the test. M. Ruth Myers has once again managed to shine by gently nudging her main character ahead in personal and professional development while making it appear natural.

This is a whirlwind of a story with a virtual pompom of loose ends that manages to get tied up neatly. . . but that would be telling!

If you’ve been a fan of Heebs since he was a newsboy on the streets, reading this second installment in the series where he’s now an adult with a scruffy little mutt that he takes just about everywhere (could have been Heebs Jr. instead of Chaucer), set up with his own detective agency in Cheyenne, Wyoming will surely bring you joy.

Heebs Kelly has settled into his new home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The lessons he learned about being a private investigator from Maggie Sullivan in Dayton have served him well. One of his most useful tools is his small dog Chaucer who is excellent at relaxing people that he needs to interview.
One August Day in 1955, five beautiful women crowded into his small office. Iris, Pauline, twins Autumn and Amanda and Wendy were concerned about their mother, Eleanor. The sisters have different personalities, abilities, and interests. Sometimes they blend well, other times there’s friction.
They all worked at the Sinclair School of Modeling and Personal Development which Eleanor had founded. She had received some threatening notes which she had destroyed, but the sisters had found one and wanted Heebs to intervene. He agreed to check into the case and they gave him a deposit for his services. After they left, he found an envelope with four $50 bills and a note telling him to drop the assignment.
Recently Linda, the office supervisor and a cousin, had fallen from a ladder under strange circumstances and now was wearing a cast. Was she the intended victim?
NIris the eldest was the Eleanor’s assistant. The others taught classes and had other responsibilities at times. Eleanor was more devoted to her business than she was to her daughters. However, she controlled them, refusing to let them follow their own interests.
Heebs agreed to meet Eleanor the following morning. When he got to the building, the police were outside. Eleanor’s body had been found in her office that morning. The police determined she had died from an overdose of legal but possibly deadly pills and called it suicide. Heebs noticed that she had spilled milk on her clothing. Her daughters said she hated milk and never drank it.
As Heebs did his investigation, he discovered a few clues hidden in Eleanor‘s office including a missing photograph that should have been on her desk.
Soon thereafter, the high school student died from an overdose of pills similar to those found in Eleanor’s body. Was there a connection? There was a school friend who saw someone who is possibly the murderer. She described the person after her mother said that she was a good artist, was not asked to make a drawing.
In AS PRETTY DOES, M. Ruth Myers again proves that she knows how to create interesting and unique characters as well as develop a plot. She does it without resorting to violence or sex scenes. There are many motives for several people who might have wanted to kill Eleanor. Trying to determine the real villain before the ending is a challenge but well worth the time and effort.

As Pretty Does is the second entry featuring WWII vet and private detective Heebs and his canine partner Chaucer. Those of us who are fans of author Myers’ earlier series featuring Maggie Sullivan have known Heebs since his street urchin childhood and it’s nice to see that he made it to adulthood as a good man.

Heebs, a city boy, somehow ended up in Cheyenne, WY after the war and has started an investigative business there. He came home from the war minus a hand and part of his arm but with his deductive abilities and his amiable personality intact. He has a way of being accepted by the people he interacts with. His manner is not soft and not macho, but he manages to be able to chat most anybody up and not ruffle their feathers. That’s not to say he isn’t tough when the situation demands it. He just seems to have a lot of common sense and a quiet self-confidence.

This one is an interesting mystery from the first scene in Heebs’ office when five stylish sisters come to see him to hire him to investigate threats against their mother, who runs a charm school/modeling agency. It isn’t long before the threats become reality and Heebs is looking into a murder instead.

Heebs does a good job of not alienating the local cops. It’s fun to watch him operate. The historical details are nicely done and the characterizations are well drawn. But the big draw is the main character, a likeable and sharp guy that you don’t mind spending time with.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

After a rocky start, Heebs Kelly is fitting in to Cheyenne, Wyoming and liking it. He has made a few friends and several contacts that help him with his private detective business. But he is a little startled when one morning five beautiful women enter his office.

The Sinclair sisters are there to get Heebs to help them find out who is threatening their mother, Eleanor, the head of a local modelling agency, who has been receiving written threats. The sisters only found out about the threats by accident, but now they want them stopped. The police don't take them seriously, so they are hoping Heebs will. They offer a hefty fee, but when they leave, one of them has left an envelope containing $200 with a note saying it would be best not to take the case.

Then Eleanor is found murdered. There are so many suspects that Heebs doesn't know where to start. Is something going on at the modelling school? Are the pills found near Eleanor's body part of something bigger, or just a part of the school's services? And who left that note and the money? Is one of the sisters involved in her mother's death?

A good story, at a good pace. Cheyenne is a great setting, as it hasn't been much explored, especially in this era.

As Pretty Does is the second installment in the Murder Mutts Mystery series. The series title refers to Chaucer, a cute mutt the protagonist, Heebs, rescued in the first book and turns out to be a hero in this book.
Although there are references to information on people introduced in the first book, this one can be enjoyed on its own. The protagonist, Heebs Kelly, was first introduced in the Maggie Sullivan Mysteries series (which I recommend!). Now he is grown up and living in Wyoming working as a private detective. Heebs is a trustworthy guy who is likeable and fun to read about.
This book is set in 1955. A set of 5 sisters request Heebs’ help after their mother is found dead of an apparent suicide. Naturally, it turns out not to be a suicide, giving Heebs a mystery to solve.
The case takes several twists and turns, including one of the sisters turning up bound and gagged in his office, and the death of a high school girl suspected of selling drugs. I appreciate that Heebs must do legwork, talk to people and think in order to solve the case. No crazy coincidences to help him.
As Pretty Does is a fun, vacation-worthy read that will also keep you guessing a bit until the end. If it matters to you, there is nothing grisly, no foul language or sex in the book.

Book two in the series that is spinning off from the Maggie Sullivan, PI, books starring the former newspaper boy run off to join the army in WWII, and trained as a PI!

Heebs is doing justice to his army training and his training with Maggie Sullivan in this new story. He has an interesting landlady and trying to figure out “who done it?.” At the “Beauty School” Heebs is assisted by his dog Chaucer. I feel like I was given all the clues and although the culprit was one I suspected, I did not see all the clues to be definitely able to decide who did it. If you have not read her Maggie Sullivan series which starts just before WWII I highly recommend it as well!

I read an ARC copy but I will be ordering a print copy of the book as soon as it becomes available, this author is one I buy print copies, and not just an eBook or read it from the library!

Heebs and Chaucer solve the case

I thoroughly enjoyed Heebs’ second book. The plot, characters, suspects, and authenticity of the time period made this story a book I was reluctant to put down. M. Ruth Myers has taken this character from an orphan newspaper boy to an intelligent, professional investigator. He is able to use his insight, street smarts and quick thinking to make two seemingly unrelated murders connect. Chaucer, his rescue dog, works seamlessly at his side, looking adorable all the while easing the way for Heebs to establish rapport and glean information from a wide and interesting cast of characters. The Murder Mutts Mysteries are great. Please keep them coming Ms. Myers.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review. (But I would have bought it, it’s good!!)

I’ve read all the Maggie Sullivan stories by Ruth Meyers and loved them. The first book in the series featuring a character from Maggie’s books - Heebs Kelly - I was not too sure about but in this 2nd one Heebs hits his stride and I found this a very compulsive read. One of those books you’re a bit loathe to give up.
5 females, all sisters, descend on Heebs to ask him to look into some nasty poison pen letters their mother has been receiving. Before Heebs can get to see their mother he learns of her death.
Meyers is very good at putting the reader right there at that very time. Heebs is a great character. Apart from learning all about ‘detecting’ from Maggie when he was young, he has also was in the war returning injured. He’s considerate and friendly but he’s not afraid to throw himself into dangerous situations when they appear.
Hope there is a book 3.

In my opinion, in order to get a full background on Heebs, the main character, you must read M. Ruth Myers' series of "The Maggie Sullivan Mysteries". This is where Heebs' character evolves. I have thoroughly loved watching him grow up and seeing him follow in the footsteps of Maggie. This book embraces him as a grown man continuing in Maggie's footsteps being a detective and solving crimes. This book has lots of possibilities of who the criminal is, but kept me guessing the whole story.

I would love to read a book on the reunion of Maggie and Heebs in a story together...solving mysteries.

When I learned that Ms. Myers had decided to finish the Maggie Sullivan books, I was very disheartened. I’m so happy to learn that I needn’t have been! I absolutely love what she’s done with Heebs Kelly! “As Pretty Does” is a terrific read. Heebs is street smart, quick on the uptake, and completely resourceful, despite losing his left hand and part of his arm in WWII. This story has twists and turns, and several possibilities regarding the whodunnit part of the story. It moves along at a good pace and was difficult for me to put down. I highly recommend it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Great series

A perfect mystery, featuring a PI with a cute little mutt. Heebs Kelly, the PI, is a character from the Maggie Sullivan series by the same author. In the original series, we meet Heebs as a child before WWII. The Murder Mutts series follows Heebs as an adult, a WWII vet, now living and working in 1955 Cheyenne, Wyoming. Even though this is the second in the series, the story holds up well even if you haven’t read the first one. The characters and settings are engaging and the story is first rate. A wonderfully solid series that I hope will continue for many installments.

On kobo (9798224546909; 246 pages

Set in 1955 - the anniversary of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings is mentioned a number of times - this features a private eye with a prostheic left hand, casualty of the war. An interestingly different protagonist (he has a dog named Chaucer... ) this uses the period well, for the most part - though I'm not entirely sure that some of the technology isn't slightly anachronistic (a minor niggle). The mysteries (of course, the initial set-up becomes complicated) are well developed and resolved...

It feels like a genuine privilege to read about a character that you've known for ever, at least since he was nine years old. Heebs, the smart, feisty, independent newspaper boy, was introduced in the magnificent Maggie Sullivan series set in Dayton, Ohio, where we saw him grow up, run off to war, and return disabled and disillusioned. With his usual resilience, he got through a bad patch to become Maggie's assistant PI and in the first Murder Mutts story, he struck out on his own in the new territory of Cheyenne.

In this second story, with the sense of place and supporting cast established, Heebs has a puzzling mystery to solve when the proprietor of a modelling school is murdered. This is a fascinating glimpse into 1950s veneer of mores and manners and the unpleasant reality beneath. The mystery is a terrific whodunnit, and the suspects and witnesses are wonderfully drawn as Heebs brings all his street-smarts, wits and determination to get to the bottom of the case, with the help of his pooch, Chaucer. Can't wait for the next in the series!

Couldn't put it down!

Herbs has certainly become a top detective. A far cry from the ragged newspaper boy who occasionally helped Maggie Sullivan before WWII. Nice twist and conclusion! Hope there are many more. Still miss hearing from or about Maggie but that's because she grew on me from the original books. Yes, enjoyable!

#2 AS PRETTY DOES by M. Ruth Myers. I love her books. This new series about Heebs Kelly, the newspaper boy who was homeless but sold papers near her office is just as good as her series about Maggie Sullivan, Private Investigator. Maggie taught him the ropes. There are 2 books in the series. Read #1 first to understand how he got from Dayton to Cheyenne. I’ll be looking for the 3rd book.

This installment of the Murder Mutts series has an unusual storyline for a mystery novel. It was an interesting read. I'm hoping to see another Heebs and Chaucer adventure in the future.
