Throughout the history of art, the studio has been the traditional place in which artworks were produced and subsequently released into the world as transportable objects. Today, with changing notions of the studio as a site for artistic production, such fixed orders no longer exist. In this context, the function of the studio as a place of contemplation, planning, experimentation and making has become more relative, even allegorical. Examining themes of studio and production in contemporary art, this volume considers ways that its processes and places the shadows of art, to borrow Barthes phrase are reflected in the work itself. Featuring 20 artists, including Pave Althammer, Tacita Dean, Katharina Grosse, Rita McBride, Mai-Thu Perret, Sarah Rossiter, Giorgio Sadotti, Paul Sietsema, Andrea Zittel and Artur Z mijewski. Texts by Roman Kurzmeyer, Ines Ru ttinger and Eva Schmidt.
