A slow-burn fantasy romance with a fierce heroine, a unique magic system, and a love that rises from the depths of grief.
She was raised far from Atlantis, but born to claim the throne. Now she must save two worlds or lose everything she loves.
Marine biologist Asherah Delmar believed her future was certain until her mother’s brutal murder shattered her life. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Asherah uncovers her mother’s hidden past… and her own fate as the lost heir to the Queendom of Atlantis.
Forced to flee assassins and plunged into a world she believed was myth, Asherah finds herself among the Water Fae—dangerous, powerful beings who don’t all want her on the throne. With war brewing, a rebel faction rising, and a council eager to see her fall, she must master her newfound abilities before it's too late.
The one person who keeps her grounded is Draevyn Eliron, the mesmerizing Commander of the Guardians. But their attraction defies logic, steeped in a magic she barely understands.
The fate of the human world and the realm beneath the waves rests in her hands.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher (via Netgalley) in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't fall into the story straight from the first page but chapter after chapter I couldn't stop reading... enjoying greatly the story as it flew at a quite fast pace. I felt the writing was "hesitant" at the beginning but more and more fluid until a great ending! What a cliffhanger! Now I just can't wait for the second book to be published to discover what will happen now!
Welcome to Atlantis, a Queendom ruled by Water Fae.
Our FMC, Asherah, was raised as a human and is Heir to a Fae throne she didn't know was hers. She faces a daunting task to save humanity, and her crown. Dealing with grief over the loss of someone very important to her, a passionate love is found with the Commander of the Guardians.
I found the plot to be good overall, but at times it contradicted itself and felt lost at times. I loved the first ÷/- 20% of the book, as well as the last +/- 20%. However, the middle was meh for me. The plot didn't get exciting for me until the last 25%.
I love that The Veiled Heir has a diverse cast of characters and is queer normative. 🙌 I also love the way mental health is viewed and prioritized, as is bodily autonomy.
The characters were good, but I wanted more. I wanted to care more about them and what happened to them. I wanted to feel. I did love to hate a couple characters, and did care a little about the mains.
The dialogue sometimes didn't read internally as sounding natural. I read a few snippets aloud to DH, and they sounded natural that way. I've never tried that method before, and I'm not sure what to think about it yet.
The romance didn't hit for for me, too insta-love. There was too much focus on the romance vs. doing what she needed to save humanity, or world building, exploring her new surroundings, etc. I do prefer my books to be more on the fantasy side than romance side, though.
The spice was ok to good overall. When the term "cock pocket" was used, I couldn't get past it. All I could hear and see were Hot Pockets ads/jingle. I think this term was the author's version of a merman cloaca, but I just couldn't. 😂
As for the prose, at times I loved it and others not so much. Usage of words like "haters" brought me out of the story. It didn't feel like it fit, tbh it fit like a fish out of water (swing and a miss 😅). The writing contradicted itself at times. For example, at one point a character says, "I'm not asking you to be happy about it, _." Shortly after, in the same conversation, he says, "Please. Try to be happy for me."
That ending was great - enough that I plan to continue the series even though I didn't love this book.
Some important but potentially triggering topics are mentioned in this book, like racism, xenophobia, and SA (on page, not to completion). For a full list of TWs as well as content warnings, please see the author's website or the beginning of the book. It's available for free on KU.
Overall, it was decently good, but I feel it could have been great. I have hope that the 2nd book in the series will be more of a hit for me.
If you're a fan of Fourth Wing, ACOTAR/Sarah J Maas, Cassandra Clare, Lightlark/Alex Aster, From Blood and Ash/Jennifer L Armentrout I think you'd enjoy this book. 😊
I received an eARC of this from @netgalley this is my unbiased review.
Fantasy books with info dumps are my least favorite fantasy books. The writing really held this back for me. I also found the fmc to be tame and naive. The training and ignorance really bored me. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, and the insta connection didn’t do it for me. I felt like there was zero character development and the characters felt shallow and one dimensional to me.
The premise is really intriguing and the ending was wild but it wasn’t enough to keep me engaged and rooting for the main characters.
I devoured this book. From page one, the world pulled me under like a riptide and refused to let me go. The blend of water fae lore, elemental magic, and Atlantis mythology is so fresh and immersive rich enough to sink into but never overwhelming.
Asherah is the kind of FMC I adore: empathetic, determined, and trying to piece her life back together even as everything she thought she knew gets turned upside down. Watching her step into this new world and unravel her family’s past felt emotional and so compelling. And Draevyn… my man is out here redefining “Guardian.” Protective, steady, quietly soft for her from the very beginning his presence adds so much heart. Every time he used her nickname, I genuinely melted.
The worldbuilding is detailed and atmospheric, full of political tension, elemental abilities, ancient prophecy threads, and this growing sense of danger brewing beneath the surface. The magic system feels unique, the lore is fascinating, and the romance is a slow burn that actually pays off when it finally hits. And trust me the spice is absolutely spicing.
By the time I reached the ending, I was not okay. That cliffhanger blindsided me in the best/worst way, and now I need book two like… yesterday.
The Veiled Heir is a gorgeous mix of romance, mythology, danger, and emotional depth, and I had such a good time reading it. I can’t wait to continue the series and dive even deeper into this underwater world.
“And love is such an inadequate word for how I feel about you, but you have it, too, nonetheless.”
This is an Atlantis retelling that is full of romance, politics, elemental magic, and battle. I loved the details of the city, the scales, and the elements. Her writing style created such a vivid world. I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions with this one and the ending left me reeling.
✨ Asherah is determined to prove herself to the water fae even though her life was turned upside down. I loved watching her learn more about her family history and the new world she’s brought into. She is willing to fight for everything her mother loved. Draevyn is protective of Ash and willing to do anything for her. I loved how he would pull her out of her dark thoughts and remind her who she was. I melted every time he used her nickname.
The Veiled Heir has: 🧜🏽♀️ Elemental Fae 🧜♂️ Fated Mates ❤️🔥 He Falls First 🌴 Atlantis Retelling 🌶 Spicy 🦈 “Mine.” 💕 Prophecy ✨ Found family 👑 Queens Rule
Blurb: Heir to a Fae throne she didn’t know was hers. A daunting task to save humanity. A passionate love nurtured through her grief.
Asherah Delmar led a happy and quiet life. Her career as a marine biologist was about to take off, but her mother, Neleah’s, sudden murder stopped her life harshly in its tracks. When she discovers her mother’s true identity, the world as she knew it begins to unravel.
If you love the sound of an underwater fae romantasy, I highly recommend The Veiled Heir By S.T. Fernandez—the first book in the Heir of Atlantis series!! It’s an Atlantis retelling featuring a spicy slowburn romance and super unique worldbuilding/magic systems.
I am so obsessed with the underwater world and Water Fae lore—this book is truly the perfect summer escapism read, with such a fascinating take on the whole idea of Atlantis/mermaid mythology!! This is an adult romance with some dark themes, so be sure to check out the CW before diving in.
What to Expect: —🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 —Elemental Fae —Princess x Guardian —Dual POV Chapters —Fated Mates —He Falls First —Warring Realms —Found Family
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.
The tropes for this tick all the boxes and yet this was a pretty standard book for me.
I did like the prophecy bit and what it reveals near the end to see what the next book should be about. It looks like it's going to get real interesting and I definitely want to know more.
Most of this however seemed to have more smut than plot. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I didn't really love the insta-love/fated mates bit for her and Draevyn. I never really felt the passion build up and the tension, which is what I usually like in a book. I definitely wanted more from the world. Hopefully we get some expansion and more attention the FMC's powers in the next book.
I definitely felt pity for Ashereh a lot of the time. She has some good mental health rep in her depression since her mom is killed early in the book. But she also gets attacked over and over and that made me mad about the people she surrounds herself with. Don't they realize NOT to leave her alone by the end of the book?? Goodness.
There was a huge cliffhanger at the end which I feel has a large plot hole, but I'm intrigued to see what they're going to do with it.
Read if you love: -Elemental Fae -Modern world crossover -Sassy FMC -Prophecies -Chosen One -Fated Mates
I loved everything about this book. Cover to cover is filled with beauty, emotion, steam, humor, action, and so much more. I loved reading about Ash and her journey. This book isn't like the rest of the fae books it has it own twist to it. The characters were beautifully written. This book is definitely meant to be read sitting by a beach. I can not wait for book two!
Wow. Wow. Wow. What a gut punch, I’m still recovering from this. 😅
The Veiled Heir was such a good time. Set in the Keys of Florida, on the Eve before she travels to California, Asherah is thrust into not just a new state, but a new world. Finding out she is the heir to Atlantis, Ash must now learn the ways of a culture she never knew existed while also keeping war and a vicious usurper at bay.
This book was SO FULL of intricate magic systems and world building. The lore and elemental powers were so in depth. It was delightful.
Ash is an empathetic and thoughtful FMC who is determined and driven. Draevyn, her Guardian, is the perfect warrior male. He is our cinnamon roll MMC and is a constant force of encouragement that was so sweet to witness. Their relationship was so refreshing and the spice is SPICING. And don’t forget our villains- they are two of the most conniving females. Them along with that cliffhanger has my heart aching for book two soon!
Tropes you may find in TVH are fated mates, bodyguard, delicious banter, bodyguard, found family, political intrigue, plot twists, deep world building, chosen one, spicy 4/5, he falls first, Atlantis retelling, and a nickname in another language. 🥰
I’m so thankful for this gift arc from ST and I surely cannot wait to continue this series!
This story features the underwater world of Atlantis - filled with Water Fae, ancient secrets, and intense romance.
Ash is a surfer and marine biologist hopeful whose life is upended by the revelation that she is the heir to the Queendom of Atlantis. In a realm she believed to be mythical, Ash must embrace her newfound identity and powers while navigating the treacherous politics and threats of her mother’s world.
It’s an easy read that promises a good story, interesting characters, and a compelling romance. The complex family dynamics and the theme of found family add just enough emotional depth. Ash’s connection with Draevyn, her palace guard, adds a layer of passion that just adds to the fun.
The romance between Ash and Draevyn drives the story, with their goddess-chosen bond and the bonding ceremony providing a unique twist to their relationship. The world-building is richly detailed, painting a vivid picture of the underwater realm of Atlantis and its diverse inhabitants. The political intrigue, council machinations, and rebel threats create a backdrop of tension and danger that keeps the plot moving at a brisk pace. The ending, in particular, is a high point, leaving me eager for the next installment and curious about Lux, an incredibly interesting character who promises to add new dimensions to the story.
However, there were some elements that I found unsettling, These aspects can detract from the otherwise engaging romance.
The Veiled Heir is a delightful blend of fantasy and romance, offering a refreshing escape into a magical underwater world. I’m eagerly anticipating what comes next for Asherah and her allies. I'm eager to explore the rest of the Queendoms with them.
Thanks to R&R Booktours and the author for the opportunity to read and review. This review is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and it is voluntary. All opinions are my own.
When I heard about this book and that it was an Atlantis retelling, I got so excited! Definitely haven’t read one before, and while there might be other Atlantis retellings around, I don’t remember seeing any. Well, THE VEILED HEIR wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I imagined an Atlantis retelling, but I enjoyed it a lot! There’s hidden kingdoms, secrets, court intrigue and it’s perhaps the most original mermaid story I’ve read so far.
After years of living in the human world, Asherah discovers that she’s the princess of Atlantis and then, unfortunately, loses her mother. Suddenly she not only has to come to terms with the death of her mother, but also that she’s now next in line to become queen of Atlantis. One of my favorite aspects of the story was discovering Atlantis, its magic and politics through Asherah’s eyes, and there were several plot twists towards the end of the book that I wasn’t expecting. However, I wish Asherah’s parents hadn’t kept her in the dark about Atlantis. She could have grown up in the human world and known who she was, how to access her powers and have basic knowledge of her homeland. As things are, her position is vulnerable, seeing that the biggest leverage Asherah’s opposers have is the fact that she knows nothing about the Atlantian culture.
My mind is reeling and my jaw is still open because of that ending… I need a chat with the author ASAP to discuss that gut punch and cliff hanger!!
I absolutely loved this book and found it to be unlike any Atlantis or elemental fae magic books I have read previously. The queendom (almost wrote kingdom - darn human teachings) sounds just enchanting and beautiful - it was an amazing place to be able to escape to in my mind as I read it. I really enjoyed the dual POV between Ashera and Draevyn. I love Ash’s determination and commitment to the water fae and her new life, all the while still caring about the humans on the Above World. Draevyn doesn’t need much said about him… sexy, protective guardian water fae is all you need to know! I absolutely loved the set up of the different queendoms and how different each one is and the politics involved. Even though the politics play a HUGE role (I’m sure we will get a lot more of this In future books)… the author did a great job of not making it too heavy and I would have actually enjoyed more of the politics on page.
I seriously CANNOT wait to see where the story takes us and what is in story for Ash, Draevyn… Atlantis and really the entire world as there is a coming ice age. I think my one complaint would be that the spice started to take over the plot for me at some points and I wouldn’t have minded it being scaled back a bit to focus on the politics and everything else going on… because let me tell you THERE IS A LOT going on in this book!!
I want to start off by saying this is in no means a bad book. Overall, I would recommend reading it. I think it's very unique for a Fae novel, and the idea of an Atlantis storyline is really cool.
I really liked the premise of this story, but I feel like the writing was a bit too juvenile for me to really get into it. I also feel like there wasn't a lot of chemistry between the MMC and FMC. Maybe it's just me, but it felt a little forced. The story also felt rushed but also like it was taking forever to read.
Synopsis: A girl living in Florida with an affinity to the water finds out after her mother’s death that she is actually the heir to the lost underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Pros/cons: This started out SO good and fizzled so fast. By 40% I was totally bored and had to skim to finish. I think it lost me for good when the “scaled water faes” described they do it through their “cock pocket.” Yep, I’ll see myself out on that note. 🤣🙈 Thank you NetGalley for the arc! Better luck next time!
The Veiled Heir by S. T. Fernandez has captivated me since I saw its beautiful cover. I mean, just look at it! Also, I loved the blurb of a girl living her life, not knowing she was actually the heir to the queendom of Atlantis when she was one day thrust into her role and her new life. She is struggling with the aftermath of it all, but she is not alone; she has the help of her father, her advisors, new friends, and her guard. Need I say the guard is the one to keep an eye on?
The Veiled Heir is mainly written from a single POV, Ashera's, the FMC's, but I loved that we got some glimpses of Draevyn's, the MMC's, thoughts throughout the book. This is the first instalment, and to understand the plot better, we get a lot of lore and history from Atlantis and other Fae queendoms.
The plot is mostly centred around Asherah preparing for her new role as the princess of Atlantis, learning about her people, their history, magic, and politics, and fighting and protecting herself. Not everyone is thrilled with having a queen who has grown up among humans, so Asherah must learn to defend herself and her principles.
Romance is a big part of the plot, as we witness Asherah and Draevyn become closer and realise they are bondmates. The Veiled Heir is a book that is on the spicier side, but it flows nicely with the rest of the plot.
I really wasn't expecting that ending and that cliffhanger; it surely made me more eager to read future instalments and find out how everything will progress.
The Veiled Heir will gift you - hidden identities - chosen one - fated mates - spice 4/5 - political intrigues - equal parts romance and action - found family - ends on a cliffhanger
Overall i give it 3.5 ⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶 and I am definitely going to continue this series!
This is the perfect book for romantasy lovers! We start off with our main character, who is thrown into this new world, and we are discovering everything right along with her. The world building happens effortlessly in between the pages. I loved the forbidden romance between Ashera and her guard. The spice was definitely spicing 🤗 and that ending! I am not okay!! I kept trying to click through because I wasn't ready for it to be over. The book starts of really fast-paced and then in the middle slows down a bit and is more focused on the characters and relationships, then it speeds up again! I am excited to see where this goes. I love the underwater world and the different fae and powers.
Highly recommend if you like 🧜♀️ Atlantis inspired 🔱 Forbidden Romance 🐬 Elemental Magic/Fae 🌊 Prophecy 💕 He falls first 🌶 Spice
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book takes you deep into the lost city of Atlantis, and let me tell you—the world-building is *chef's kiss* ✨.
This is a fantasy romance filled with rich lore, slow-burn tension, and a unique magic system that had me hooked from the start!
Aside from the magical underwater setting, the tension between the characters is what made me giggle like a teenager.
Draevyn, the thousand-year-old captain/guardian, literally volunteered to guard Princess Asherah, and the way he growls at anyone who looks at her sideways? LOVE IT 😝. The slow burn is *so real* and the fated mates energy is undeniable.
I was completely obsessed with their dynamic, but honestly? I want more of the world too! Atlantis through Asherah’s eyes feels immersive, magical, and just… perfect ✨.

This was an AMAZING book!! I haven’t read an Atlantis retelling yet, so this one was super intriguing to me and it absolutely delivered in every way I hoped it would! I’m scared of the ocean, but lately have been absolutely loving any and all ocean/mermaid/pirate books! This was another really great summer read that was just so perfect for this time of year!
I loved Ashera so much as a FMC, and her connection with our MMC, Draevyn, was nothing short of phenomenal. Their chemistry was amazing and I loved their banter so much. Ashera is such an awesome character and I loved seeing her take on a new role, one she had absolutely no idea about or even thought could exist. Her journey was so epic and I can’t wait to see what’s to come for her in the rest of the series! Drae is the epitome of a Romantasy MMC, and I loved that he would do anything to make sure his people are safe and taken care of. The two of them together are a force of nature and I absolutely craved when they were on page together! I couldn’t get enough of them!
I really loved the world building and thought ST did an amazing job of describing the magic system. Her use of imagery and descriptive words was beautiful, and I could just see Atlantis and the Water Fae in my mind so clearly. She did an AMAZING job of incorporating the world building details into the story and it made everything so easy to digest as a reader. This was definitely one of those books where you can escape into the world so easily and lose track of time while reading.
The pacing of the plot was really well done and I didn’t think it was too fast or too slow. I thought this book was the most perfect set up for the future of the series and that cliffhanger ending has definitely got me hooked! I can’t wait for the next one!
Overall, I definitely recommend that you “dive” into this one!😉
If you are wanting a unique book about fae with a mashup of Atlantis then this is the book for you! This book took me by surprise and I enjoyed reading it so much. I will say that it took me a minute to really get into the book, but once I did I didn’t want to put the book down. S.T. Fernandez crated such a unique world and magic system. It was fun to learn about this magical queendom.
Ashera just found out that she is the heir to the water fae queendom of Atlantis. After not even knowing fae even existed, Ashera believes that she is not the right person for the job. She doesn’t really have any confidence in herself and to me it made her character so connectable. But she also has this great group of fae and humans that are in her corner and help her realize that she is who this queendom needs. One of her biggest supporters is Draevyn who falls for her right away. I mean this male has it bad for Ash. It was so cute to see how much he cared about her and how he wanted to protect and prepare her.
I loved the side characters in this book. Their personalities were great and I loved how much they cared about Ash even though they just met her.
Politics are a huge part in this book, and I think that now that that is set we should get some more action with the next books. I can’t wait to see the other queendoms and see just how different they are to the water fae.
We get amazing world building, a unique magic system, great characters and plot, and we can’t forget about the spice. This book pleasantly surprised me with how much spice there was. Draevyn was absolutely amazing and surprisingly has a very dirty mouth.
What to expect: ~ Fated mates ~ Bodyguard ~ Found family ~ Chosen one ~ He falls first
The premise of Atlantian fae caught my attention immediately when I read the blurb for this one! The world building was fascinating and detailed yet easy to follow, so I had no trouble immersing myself in the story. The court politics were probably my favorite aspect of the book.
While the romance felt a bit too instalove for my taste, the story was so captivating that I didn't mind. I appreciate how unique this was, and after that ending I know I’ll be picking up book 2 when it’s available!
**Thank you to Azalea Press for the free copy. All opinions are my own**
Barbie's Mermaidia meets Atlantis! This book was such a great read and I can't wait for any further books in this series (it's a series right??!!)! The world building is absolutely fantastic and this book contains everything I look for in a fantasy book (the pacing in the last 20% threw me off a bit, so that's why it didn't make it to 5 stars wr). There is so much intrigue and I cried within the first half. It felt like a Disney movie! (Way to kill off bambis mother) Thank you to @stfernandezwrites and @rrbooktours for the eArc in exchange for an honest review! It was such a great book that my shelf trophy is already in my Waterstones cart waiting for my next order🎉
4⭐️ Comes out July 23rd! This was so much fun! A very unique fantasy, with a world and lore that I’ve never read before. The introduction of water fae (and other elemental fae) was so unique! The world building and political intrigue was really great. The romance between the two main characters seemed (a tad) rushed but overall was entertaining. Would definitely recommend if you love fantasy that’s relatively easy to follow with good characters!

I absolutely loved discovering Atlantis through our main character’s eyes, it made everything quite easy to follow and it is such an interesting world that captivated me instantly.
The pull between our two characters was intriguing from the start and I love the bodyguard type of relationship they had. They still took things slowly even though they were a bit obsessed with each other, which all made sense since all of this was completely new to Ash (and it definitely made me happy because: slow burn lover here!). Draevyn was such a fun character, loved his banter and how easygoing he was and also thoughtful in how he acted with Ash. I am so grateful for the small chapters we got from his point of view! This is my favourite thing when a book you thought was a single POV suddenly has small bits from another character’s POV.
The story was full of funny moments and quirky banter, but there still were emotional things and I particularly enjoyed how our main character's grief was showcased. It was definitely relatable and I thought it was well done.
The world created by Fernandez was really nice to discover, there's lots of political intrigue, I loved the fact that it is being ruled by Queens only and the cast of characters is diverse. I quite enjoy where the story is going, there was so much happening by the end and it left me on the edge of my seat. I have multiple characters I got attached to, which is always a good sign in a series. I might have a favourite (that I won't name) and I'm very hopeful we'll get to see more of that character in the upcoming book!
All in all, this was a very nice story with a beautiful world that was so fun to navigate. I cannot wait for the next installment.
Thanks to the author and MTMC Tours for sending me a copy. All opinions are my own.
Every time i had to put the book down to do IRL things all i wanted to do was read and find out more! 🐚 🌊 This story had so much world building and was filled with interesting characters.
+ OBSESSED WITH: the world building, the romance, the spice (we love female worship), an FMC discovering her powers, prophecies, talking to sea creatures, queendoms, lovable & memorable side characters (who doesn’t love a fashion moment or unlikely ally), you really HATE the villain
> DIDN’T LOVE: not enough tension between love interests for me personally (insta lust/love), i prefer a LITTLE more enemies/lovers, fairly predictable, strangely lax on guarding a royal (like she keeps sneaking out/getting beat up?)
The writing and imagery are so vivid it makes it easy to immerse yourself in the story. Ash's journey was great to read and I loved seeing her learn all about her history. The story and world building are easy to follow and the romance was done so well 2 Check this one out!
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I’m so upset. SEETHING.
BECAUSE I NEED THE NEXT BOOK. That was one brutal cliffhanger that I did NOT see coming !!!
Plot: I was hooked in the start, it did hit a bit of a lull in the middle, but once I got to about 55% it picked up for me and literally could not stop reading. I canceled all plans and ignored all responsibilities. The concept of elemental Fae in Atlantis - SO cool and unique. The development of the MFC coming into her new role - very cool process throughout the book. Lots of scheming and plotting and mystery.
World building: NO INFO DUMP. THANK YOU. It was so well done ! And again, so unique.
MFC- I enjoyed Ash. She was truly a strong female character. Made some dumb decisions here and there that I couldn’t quite forgive lol
MMC- I had a pull to him, he had me swooning. It wasn’t until the end that I went full *sell my left kidney* to have a man as sweet as him UGH. His piece at the end with the MFC nearly tore me apart.
Side characters: The antagonist is so easily hateable. I want nothing but horrible things for her. The rest were so SO lovely !! And added so much to the story.
Spice/Romance: It was a steamy one for sure. Weird language used at times 😅 but not over-used where I had to put the book down lol. The romance is a bit insta-love but the book still had a slow burn feel. The things that come out in terms of the love confession - rip my heart out and step on it why don’t you ????
Honestly if you liked the second book from ACOTAR - read this book. That’s all I have to say.
"You are a dream I never want to wake up from," he whispered against my skin."
Let's start with: if ST Fernandez writes it ... I'm going to read it.
I absolutely loved this spicy romantasy Atlantis wild ride of a book so so so much.
I am most definitely now a "drae bae" and will never go back.
My favourite part of this whole book was the found family aspect for the people Asherah ends up with around her. I love every single one of those characters.
I also really enjoyed Asherah and how strong and brave she handled her whole situation with what happens at the beginning.
You get: • Romantasy • Fated Mates • Spicy • Dual POV • Secret Identity • Atlantis • Found Family
Pick up this book on July 23rd and prepare to be thrown into a spicy underwater, war brewing, goddess filled, magic and saucy (spicy romance book lovers) characters masterpiece.
"You are my path. You have my heart. You have my soul. And love is such an inadequate word for how I feel about you, but you have it, too, nonetheless."
This book promises an exciting underwater adventure, and while it does deliver some cool moments, it misses the mark in a few areas. The marine world is described in a way that’s really vivid, but the early chapters drag with too much detail (seriously, do I need to know what’s on the main character’s t-shirt?).
The insta-love plot is entertaining but feels rushed and shallow. The main character often makes questionable decisions, and the villain, while effective in some ways, comes off as so pathetic that it’s hard to take them seriously.
The writing gets better as the story goes on, and things heat up quite a bit 🔥. Still, a tighter edit could have made the pacing smoother and the overall experience more satisfying. Despite its flaws, The Veiled Heir offers a unique and occasionally thrilling adventure.
Ash's world gets turned upside down one day when her, her mother, and her father, are attacked. This attack leads to Ash learning about what she and her family truly are. Her mother is the Queen of Atlantis, her Father is the king, and Ash is the heir, and it quickly becomes her duty to rule Atlantis, when her mother is murdered. Ash is thrust into a whole new world, one that she must become the perfect Queen for, even though she knows nothing about Atlantis or it's people. Ash is then given a short time frame where she must prove to those who don't believe in her and want her removed from the throne, that she can be a great queen to her people.
What I liked: - I enjoyed the magic system, and having the magic based on the type of fae that the characters are, although, in the next book, I am hoping for a bit more distinction of this magic system from other magic systems that are very similar. Throw in a few curveballs, add some more layers, the works. - I did like the writing style. I felt like it was a great ratio of dialog to descriptive wording. While the writing at the beginning was a bit slow, it did improve greatly by the end of the book and the second half flowed a lot better.
What I did not like: - This book includes fated mates/bondmates, which I do love, however, I prefer the type of mates where there is a build up before they become obsessed with each other as soon as they see each other. The chemistry was good, but I feel like they just went from strangers, to obsessed within a couple of pages and that really is way too fast for my tastes. - Dear Author.... Was the term "cock pocket" necessary when discussing anatomy of the water fae? Every time I saw that word, it just made me really want to skip to the next page. - The side relationship between Ash’s Dad and her friend. That just seemed to come out of nowhere. Ash’s parents were together for 500+ years, bondmates were told to basically just love each other until forever, and then her dad moves on less than a year after her mom was murdered. I don’t think that was necessary, and it takes away from the main story line, which is Ash trying to prove herself - Ash’s training sometimes seemed to be put on the back burner in the story, as if it wasn’t a part of the main storyline. It was mentioned here and there, sometimes there were scenes, but if Ash has 6 months, and was told her training would be super intensive, I feel like it wasn’t treated that way when it came to including more details on her training to show her development in the book. This led to some confusion for me about whether or not the main plot was the romance, or Ash learning her heritage and how to be a queen.
All in all, do I plan on continuing the series? Yes, I can see myself reading more of this series. I did like this book, and am curious to see what happens after the ending of this book, and in what direction the story will go from here. I do think that the ending was a nice bump in the road that was thrown in and I want to know how everyone attempts to get around it.
