Kingship turns out to be a poisoned chalice for Audun, and he abdicates. Aaron is the rightful successor to his father’s thrones, but ancient marriage promises create threats and opportunities. Sylva decides on a daring move, but it proves to be a misstep. When her brother, Bertalan, discovers her scheme he sends Sylva into exile on a remote island, where she seems destined to spend the rest of her life. Robert (Bob) Reid grew up in Scotland’s beautiful border country. Hawick was home until it was time to go to university in Edinburgh. A degree and a PhD in Chemistry followed. It was in Edinburgh that Bob met and married Phyllis. Work opportunities took them south, and their son Simon was born in Cheshire and their daughter Charis some years later in Swindon. Highworth, near Swindon, became home in 1982. It still is home and has become a special place to Bob and Phyllis.
Bob’s career of forty years was initially in technical management, then general management and business consulting. Work generally took priority over creativity. Semi-retirement in early 2018 created the time, family and friends the encouragement, for Bob to develop his writing. His first novel “White Light Red Fire” was published in April 2019 and is a historical fantasy loosely based on the Scottish wars of independence of the early 14th Century. ‘The Emperor’ was the first of a trilogy based in the same lands as “White Light Red Fire” but placed two hundred years later, in the early 16th century. The Son continued Audun’s story and the story of the red fire.
The third book, ‘The Thief’, was published 27th February 2022 and brought to a close the story of Raimund, Audun and the red fire.

The Empress tells Sylva and her son's story after their banishment by Audun. Sylva and the Princes will become engaged in a struggle for the rights of thrones.

The Empress: The Emperor The Son and The Thief, Book 4 is a well-written and expansive book. You can settle in with this book for hours and truly escape. Reid's fascinating 16th-century epic novel delivers an exciting historical read. Although you might want to read the first three volumes, this book is a stand-alone story that works independently, even while referencing earlier books. With an extensive prologue, you get a sense of the characters and setting which is extremely helpful. The book unfolds beautifully, full of magical themes and imaginative writing, this read is worth delving into. Recommended.

In the fourth offering in the popular trilogy, The Empress: The Emperor, The Son and The Thief, talented author Robert Reid spins an intriguing narrative filled with intense characters entrenched in the type of dialect that readers will find highly entertaining! The story is set in the fifteenth century, a time when the people thought nothing of having one's head for even the slightest transgression. And so it was for Sylva, the disgraced Empress of the North. Having led a rebellion, her brother, King Bertalen orders her to be exiled to Lat, a forgotten part of the world where nothing ever happens and news of the outside world never reaches the inhabitants’ ears. But there is hope for the Empress yet when she discovers an ally in disguise. What follows is a series of events that will leave readers reeling in wild anticipation of what should happen next! I recommend this enticing read to fans of the previous three novels in this action-packed series.

Reading "The Empress" was an experience in itself. One of Robert Reid’s areas of expertise must definitely be his character creation, because the characters were dynamic and I found myself emotionally attached, in some way, to each one.The story focuses on Audun discovering his royal heritage and the chaos that follows. What really struck me was the tumultuous plot and emotional rollercoaster they all go on. The power struggles, family dynamics, treachery and plot twists were gripping and I didn’t want to put the book down at any point.
Sylva’s story had me completely emotionally invested. I loved her character because even in the face of her tragic exile, she continued to fight and hope. I rooted for her throughout the book, especially because Robert Reid made her a relatable, imperfect person. Sylva made plenty of mistakes and bad decisions, but I think every reader can find something of themselves reflected in her.
This was a complex, heart-wrenching book that I will definitely be recommending to everyone I know.

And just when you think it's over, "The Empress" continues the saga, and you go more in-depth into the world created by Robert Reid. I love how after reading book three, I told myself (and wrote in my review) that there is hope for potential stories set in the same world. And look what we have here.

After thinking the trilogy ended, I was quite happy to see a new book with even more to unfold. This big chunk of a book (literally close to a thousand) is bigger than the others in the series. It might seem a bit daunting, but if you made it this far into the series, you will surely enjoy this one without a doubt.

The focus of this book is on Sylva. She is stuck on an island with no way to escape. Every time she tries, she gets captured again. You feel her desperation and how crafty she is as she plots her next move. Now, it took me a bit to remember the contents from the previous books; however, this could easily be read as a standalone. There is so much information and development, that you can go straight into this without feeling lost (But I would still recommend reading the other 3 books). And if you are a fan of character-driven narratives, you will find this arc engaging.

"The Empress" Book 4 of the Trilogy, 'The Emperor The Son and The Thief' is a continuation of the history of Amina, Kermin and Doran. by Robert Ferguson Reid. In this engaging and captivating recount of Sylva's journey from where we left her in "The Thief" banished into exile on the island of Lat - we discover that her sons Elrik and Aaron have disappeared.

Sylva's sons must regain their rightful inheritance: can the 'Red Fire' assist them in the battles ahead, can 'The Empress' heal the divisions that dislocate the nations: read 'The Empress' to find out the conclusion and final part of the trilogy.

Compelling 16th Century history at its very best from a master story teller.

A powerful saga continues

UK author Robert Reid earned his PhD in Chemistry and retired from a career in management and business consulting to enter his second, very successful career as an author. His initial novel WHITE LIGHT RED FIRE opened the gates for his ongoing series THE EMPEROR THE SON AND THE THIEF, of which THE EMPRESS is the fourth installment.

Reid’s creation of fantasy 16th century history offers a thrilling entry to explore the past, and while if is preferable to read the initial three volumes of this saga, THE EMPRESS is so well scribed, embedding mirrors of the previous episodes, that the novel stands solid on its own. Reid opens with this note: ‘The Empress Sylva has been held on the island of Lat for nearly three years. Very little news has reached the secluded island and life has moved on in the time that Sylva has been excluded from the intrigues of the outside world. She has attempted to escape several times but somehow her captors have always been ahead of her and she has been escorted back to the drab four walls of her little outhouse. So her tedious life in captivity has continued. It was a letter delivered by her companion, Alice, which gave her new hope. Surprisingly he was still alive and with that news, her hopes were reignited.’ An extensive Prologue provides the stage and character developments the open the curtain to this epic novel.

Rich in creative prose and concepts that embrace supernatural powers, this novel invites entry into the 16th century atmosphere as depicted by a fascinating family. The story unfolds cinematically – and very involving. Excellent reading!

I couldn't wait to explore Reid's vast universe once more. This is "The Emperor, the Son, and the Thief", the fourth instalment in the series. The voyage of Audun, an illegitimate son who reclaims his royal birthright, is the subject of the first three books; however, this novel switches to the story of Sylva, the exiled Empress. And! it gets exciting with every page.
It was helpful that the opening introduction prepared the reader for the novel's plot. There's a lot of complexity and subtlety in this, and while it might be helpful to have read the other books in the series, it's optional to do so to appreciate it fully. Because of the detailed descriptions and endearing people, you truly amalgamated to that world. I was enthralled with Sylva's tale and her ambition to reclaim her crown. You will want to experience this epic fantasy if you like political intrigue, historical fiction, and strong female characters. The novel seems vast and personal because Reid skillfully combines historical intrigue with supernatural aspects.

I was eager to dive back into the rich world that Reid has created. The opening history was helpful, setting the reader up for the story to come. There’s a lot of intrigue and nuance within this, and while reading previous volumes in the series might help, you definitely don’t need to in order to enjoy this. I got so caught up in the story, that I completely lost track of time, and I was startled when my alarm went off to remind me I had chores to take care of. You really feel like you’re being transported there with the vivid descriptions, and unforgettable characters. I was absolutely captivated by Sylva’s story, and her desire to retake her throne. If you enjoy historical fantasy, political intrigue, and strong FMCs, then this is one epic fantasy you don’t want to miss.

I’ve read a few of Reid’s books; the last one before this was in this series about a year ago, which was initially supposed to be a trilogy. Reid maintains the impressive and vivid universe in which his characters roam.

Sylva is a wonderfully dynamic character. Her captivity only seems to strengthen her character, even in moments of doubt. Her determination to get off the island is inspiring. The complicated chaos of family and kingdom leadership creates a complex weave of events, and Reid navigates these threads and presents them in proper form. This is a longer read, but it’s well worth the time. A great surprise addition to the series!

This is a long book but worth the effort. At 800 pages this will be the only book you need for your holiday. Spend quality time in Amina, Kermin and The Aramin Forest for less than 2*400 word books at £9.99 each. So good value as well as an epic story.

More supernatural and magical than the earlier stories. A very different ending than the one you might expect.

This is the fourth instalment in the series The Emperor, the Son, and the Thief. While the first three books follow the journey of Audun, an illegitimate son who reclaims his royal inheritance, this novel shifts focus to the story of Sylva, the exiled Empress.

After being banished by Audun, Sylva finds herself on a remote island, cut off from the intrigues of the outside world. Her life in captivity is bleak, and her attempts to escape have all failed—until a letter arrives, reigniting her hope. With the possibility of allies waiting for her, Sylva must find a way to break free and reunite with her sons.

The author's writing brings this fantasy 16th-century world to life with rich detail and creativity. Though part of a series it stands strong on its own, offering a captivating tale of power, betrayal, and the quest for redemption. Reid masterfully weaves supernatural elements with historical intrigue, making the story feel both epic and intimate.

You might like to wander through a few artistic journals — they’re full of sparks and surprises.
