Breaking Through the Pain

Rate this book
A star player who thrived on the ice. That was how the sports world saw Devon D’Agostino.

But that was hockey. Shy and caring, Devon wanted to find a partner. Someone to spend his nights with.

Easier said than done when he was a professional athlete who liked his privacy. Finding a date didn’t come easy. On the road, he’d rather be in the hotel than partying with his teammates.

Then again, someone could appear when he least expected it. For example, in the clinic his mom worked in.

Lincoln Newland was everything Devon wanted in a partner, except there were secrets Lincoln wasn’t ready to share.

An honorably discharged veteran, Lincoln knew it wasn’t smart to go out with Devon. Given his PTSD, they led very different lives.

Breaking through the pain meant possibly having the man of Lincoln’s dreams.

Noooo... wygląda na to, że znowu mogę napisać, patrząc na inne oceny:
To Ja, Nie Książka 😉

This is the kind of romance I am always looking for and is not easy to find.

People with deep emotions, looking for a real relationship, looking for the love of their lives, a story that is about finding your soulmate and wanting to be with them no matter what.

There is no having sex in this book, only making love.

Two honest people, who don't lie about their fears and want each other fiercely and not only love one another but care deeply about one another too.

The way Lincoln asks and Devon replies: "Always."

I loved their families too, especially Lincoln' sister.

Super recommended.

I adored this book! Sweet shy Jock, hurt/confort book. They were so adorable together. I loved how they supported each other. How they wanted the best for each other. I’m so freakin proud of this couple. The writing was great, the smexy was yum, and the side characters are the best! Next book is not for me but hopefully I’ll be backs

What a gloriously written and amazing story with super loveable characters. Admittedly, this is the first book I have read by this author and I am a fan. This book is beautiful.

Devon is a professional hockey player. Fully confident and dominant on the ice, he's reserved and rather shy when he's not involved with hockey. He has not been able to find anything outside of the game that lights him up. Anything or anyONE. He's close to his parents and values his friends, but that one piece is missing. He does have a little crush on the nurse at the Urgent Care where his mom is a doctor.

Lincoln is a Navy veteran with scars both inside and out. Struggling with his time in the Navy and a crippling event that led to his severe injuries and discharge, his PTSD is a significant factor in his life. He has built walls to avoid being a perceived burden to anyone who gets close to him. Lincoln moved on his own, away from his overly supportive parents, brother and twin sister. He is connected with a therapist (one of the first times I have ever thought the portrayal of the therapist was accurate and tangible). Lincoln is a nurse at the Urgent Care where he works with Devon's mother. He has always felt something good about Devon.

The two men find one another and begin to realize the feelings they have for each other are real. Devon is persistent because Lincoln continues to push him away and turn down his invitations for a date. There is such an internal struggle with Lincoln and even as the wall starts to crumble, it quickly builds back up. Devon is devoted and ready to face whatever Lincoln needs. It's such an endearing and caring courtship.

This book is just really solid. It's a good read. Emotion, spice, trauma, dedication and love. The side characters are great too. Well worth the read.

The title of the book truly fits it. This is a well-crafted story that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster, but one you’ll want to stay on. Devon is a shy hockey player, unsure of himself when off the ice. Lincoln is a registered nurse dealing with PTSD from his time in the Navy. One wants a relationship, and the other thinks they don’t deserve one. Lincoln doesn’t want others to know about his PTSD; he ends up having a flashback while on a date with Devon that leaves him reeling and Devon wanting to know what happened. With the help of his sister and therapist, Lincoln starts taking control of himself, which isn’t easy. There’s lots to unpack.
Griff was a rock of patience and gave Lincoln the room he requested. With time, love, and patience, they were back together and more robust. This is a book I will read again.

I also felt the depiction of Lincoln’s flashbacks, night terrors, and panic attacks to be very emotional. It shows the struggle a person goes through when coping with PTSD and that with mental health, not everything works for everyone. I found the trigger warnings at the start necessary because it’s heart-gripping.

I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a wonderful book. Devon and Lincoln’s story tore at my heart but also warmed it. Devon and Lincoln's story started a little bit slow but you feel the connection between them. This is the a great start to a new series and I can't wait for the ride.

Devon was a beautifully sweet character who was exactly what Lincoln didn't want to need. Lincoln's PTSD was really well written and it made his reactions very understandable, but it did put Devon through a lot which was sometimes harder to read than Lincoln's struggles themselves. The therapist and the hockey team players were all amazing characters.

“Breaking Through the Pain” by Haven Hadley is a heartfelt story that really tugs at the emotions. Devon D’Agostino is a star on the ice, but off it, he’s this shy, caring guy who just wants to find someone special. You can’t help but root for him as he navigates his quiet, private life as a professional athlete.

Then there’s Lincoln Newland, and wow, does your heart go out to him. As a veteran dealing with PTSD, panic attacks, and anxiety, Lincoln’s struggles are so vividly portrayed. His journey is tough, and you can really feel his pain and the weight of his past experiences.

The way Devon and Lincoln slowly build their relationship is genuinely touching. Devon isn’t your typical sports star; he’d rather stay in his hotel room than go out partying, which makes his connection with Lincoln feel all the more special. Their bond is built on trust and understanding, and watching them support each other is incredibly moving.

The book does a great job of highlighting the importance of mental health and the impact it has on everyday life. Lincoln’s struggles are handled with such care, and it makes you really appreciate the strength it takes to face those challenges.

The story does have the third part break-up but it actually made sense for Lincoln as a character. Given his PTSD and all the emotional baggage he carries, his reaction felt real and authentic. It wasn’t just a plot device; it was a reflection of his ongoing struggle and his need to protect himself and his constant feeling of not wanting to burden a partner with his PTSD.

Also, shout out to Dr. Dawkins, Lincoln’s therapist. Dr. Dawkins is a fantastic character who offers the kind of support and guidance that makes a huge difference. His role is crucial in helping Lincoln navigate his mental health challenges, and it’s refreshing to see such a positive portrayal of therapy in the story.

If you’re looking for a story that’s both emotional and uplifting, this one is definitely worth a read. The characters are relatable, and the message of resilience and love is beautifully conveyed.

Breaking Through the Pain follows Devon, captain of an ice hockey team, and Lincoln, a veteran with PTSD.

What worked for me:
-In sports romance novels between an athlete and a non-athlete, the romance can get kind of insular with the athlete's team being completely ignored. Not here, the team is a solid presence throughout and the characters are varied and give you hints as to what stories might still come in the series.
-While occasionally frustrating to read, Lincoln's PTSD and the unpredictability it gives his life (i.e. what will trigger a panic attack) as well as the control he exerts over his own life to manage it and what that makes him miss out on are given a lot of room to breathe.

What worked less for me:
-The writing style. I found it frequently kind of flat; things like Devon's jealousy of the couples in his life are mentioned, but the narration just has him go "they were a great couple and I wanted to have that" instead of e.g. having him observed them and being upset by it more organically.
-Kind of a similar note but the way character information was dumped was also very tell-not-show. I am just not someone who is ever going to care a whole lot about what car a character is driving but the cars were described in excruciating detail, as were all of Devon's decisions regarding his house. It made me feel a little dumb as a reader to have Devon just tell me he built his driveway this way for more privacy because he doesn't enjoy media attention - this seems like something I could intuit about him from his behaviour.
-I'm not a huge fan of the will they won't they, especially frequent break up make ups. Lincoln had his reasons and they are more understandable than some I've read but it was just not for me. In this one, it left me uninvested enough that I struggled to finish.
-It strikes a very weird note to me to have a gay man in the military unironically talk about how he joined because he wanted to defend America's freedoms

I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

This book had a lot of things I liked, but there were also things I did not like going on.

One thing I liked (though it made my heart hurt) was how Lincoln and his PTSD were depicted. His determination to avoid an episode at all costs was heartbreaking, and I really liked the sessions with his therapist as he works to get better. I also liked that simply finding someone to love wasn't enough to magically cure him. I also really liked how supportive Devon was, and the moments they were together were really sweet.

Now onto some of the things I didn't love. Firstly, I understand why Lincoln kept pushing Devon away. I really did. But I did not love the constant back and forth, especially that Devon just always immediately took him back without any hesitation or attempt to lay down any kind of protections for himself. Lincoln just kept hurting Devon without explaining anything, disappearing for awhile, and coming back with no pushback.

And while I love Devon and think he is a sweetheart, he comes off as a little bland. I feel like we don't really get to know him that well despite having half of the book being told from his point of view.

I also wish there was more showing and less telling. This book had a lot of inner monologuing, where most of what we get is entirely inside the character's head. Give me more plot! Give me more than two dates that end disastrously! I don't know if this is just how the author writes, but it didn't really work for me entirely.

This book had some good elements, I just wish it had done a little bit more, especially with showing us Devon and Lincoln's connection instead of just telling us how strongly the characters felt.

4.25 stars - This story has a number of buttons pushed for me – hockey, ex-military, damaged characters, to name a few. I was not disappointed. Devon and Lincoln were perfect for each other, and that was apparent almost from the get go. Unfortunately, Lincoln’s issues prevent him from accepting that without a little pushback, but they get there eventually.

Devon is a super sweet, shy NHL player who comes alive on the ice. Lincoln is now an urgent care nurse working with Devon’s mother, a doctor at the same facility. Lincoln keeps his problems to himself and not wanting to burden Devon, pushes him away. But, Devon is ever patient and understanding and waits for Lincoln to get there in his own time. I loved this about him. They are tested a time or two when Lincoln’s PTSD kicks in, but that basically opens the door to Lincoln having to face his issues while giving Devon more of an understanding at the same time.

I really enjoyed the story telling in this one, although I found myself skimming at times early on when there seemed to be an abundance of oversharing details. This lessens as the story goes on though, and I was fully vested in seeing this relationship play out. I’m already excited for the next installment about a few other teammates of Devon and to see if they end up winning the Cup!

“Thank you for catching me.”

This was a tough one.. for multiple reasons.
There were also some happy and great parts to this book.

Lincoln & Devon are complete opposites.
The damaged vet & a professional hockey player.
This book is heavy, the subject matter in this book is sensitive.
My heart broke for these two but more so for Lincoln. Devon tries to be there but there is only so much you can do in that situation before giving into what the person affected wants.

The angst and slow buildup was fantastically done. Getting both sides made everything that much more meaningful. Both of these guys have their inner demons but Lincolns grabbed ahold of me in a completely different way.
I personally did not agree with how Lincoln deals with his PTSD and everything that comes with that painful struggle. It is his own battle, and even if it hurts the one he cares about he thinks he needs to stay away. Bottom Line, Lincoln is a bit selfish for the wrong reasons especially when it comes to Devon and his feelings. It shouldn't take others to point out something obvious.

Devon coming into himself is the best part of this book, his communication is top tier here.
Risking it all and hoping to come out the other side sometimes is the hardest battle.

I am a sucker for military books but this one was just under the mark for me, I did enjoy it but there were just things that didn't sit right with me.

Breaking Through The Pain by Haven Hadley
4.5/5 ✨🌟

* * * SPOILERS * *

This was definitely a huge hurt/comfort story but I was all for it.

Lincoln is a nurse that works with Devon’s mom. He’s been through a lot and has PTSD from his time overseas. Then, there’s Devon who is a big hockey player but prefers the quiet and alone time.

All that Devon wants is to find true love after witnessing people close to him finding their happily ever after. I’ve always wanted to read a story where the main or one of the main characters want their happily ever after since the beginning of the book.

Lincoln tries to deny the attraction between the two. Sure, he pushes him away a few times because he’s in his head that he just doesn’t deserve a chance at love, especially with Devon, but I’m so glad that in the end he gives in. He even takes him with him to his appointment where he shares his time overseas.

The spicy scenes were good too. It was so intimate and it made me happy that Lincoln finally showed his back and wanted Devon to take control this time.

I have to say if it wasn’t for Devon’s mother trying to hook them up, I don’t think they would have made it this far. Loved all the side characters especially Lincoln’s twin sister and Devon’s teammates. This book was just so amazing and can’t wait for the next book!

'It wasn’t until he left the room, the scent of his cologne lingering behind, that I finally took a deep breath and relaxed. I didn’t know what it was about him, but since the first time I saw him, I wanted him. If only I could get my brain on the same page as my dick so I could be brave enough to ask him to have dinner with me.'

I really enjoyed this book. I loved both Devon and Lincoln, but I really felt connected to Devon from the start. I liked that he had his insecurities and didn't like attention. It made him very relatable to me. He also didn't have the courage to ask Lincoln out, though he tried to push himself and make that leap. When he finally did, I had to laugh because it felt so... Devon. Lincoln has both emotional and physical scars and PTSD and didn't want to dump that baggage on anyone else. But with the ball in his court, it's his turn to be brave... Will he?

'It really was about me, no matter how cliché that sounded. I didn’t date because I refused to be a burden to anyone.'

A very sweet romance. The slow pacing felt right and I like how they communicated one the both of them got the courage to do so. I also loved the supporting characters- especially King and the players.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I will be reading more. 5 stars.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I am glad that I gave the book a chance. It is well written and easy to read. I enjoyed the story of Lincoln and Devon. Lincoln is a nurse who works with Devon's Mom. He is also a retired medic who is suffering from PTSD. He wants to do everything himself and it is limiting his recovery. He doesn't want to be a burden to anyone and feels like he doesn't deserve to be happy. Devon is the captain of the Espen Jetties hockey team. He is confident and powerful while playing hockey. His confidence evaporates once he is off the ice. The two meet through Devon's mom. Devon's shyness kicks in and he can barely make eye contact or speak with Lincoln. The first step in a relationship is the hardest. You have to let someone in. This is their story. I liked how kind and thoughtful the two of them were. Devon supported Lincoln 100% and was willing to adapt if it made things easier for Lincoln. Neither of them is the playboy type and once they give their heart, they are all in. I enjoyed the book. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

A masterfully written novel that will keep you engrossed despite the emotional ups and downs it delivers. When he's not on the ice, bashful hockey player Devon isn't sure of himself. The PTSD that Lincoln suffered while serving in the Navy is affecting his work as a licensed nurse. One feels unworthy of a relationship, while the other desires one. While on a date with Devon, Lincoln has a flashback that sends him reeling and makes Devon want to know what occurred; he doesn't want anybody to know about his PTSD. Despite the challenges, Lincoln begins to take charge of his life with the support of his sister and therapist. I have a lot of stuff to unpack. As Lincoln asked for more space, Griff patiently granted his request. They were stronger and back together after some time, love, and patience. Yes, I will be reading this book again. Also, I thought it was really moving how they portrayed Lincoln's nightmares, panic attacks, and flashbacks. The fact that not everyone finds relief from mental health treatments is highlighted, as is the difficulty of living with post-traumatic stress disorder . The start-of-the-book trigger warnings were great because the story is so riveting.I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

I liked the two mains characters a lot, both Lincoln and Devon are lovely people with real and relatable challenges. I was definitely rooting for Devon and Lincoln to find a way to be together. I also appreciate hockey romances that actually contain an authentic hockey feel, which this book successfully achieves. Lincoln’s PTSD is the main thing blocking their HEA, the author does an excellent job demonstrating how debilitating his condition is for him. His challenges with starting or maintaining a relationship with Devon are entirely understandable, they just weren’t always interesting or enjoyable to read, for me. It’s a lot of one step forward two steps back, which is not my favorite device. The side characters throughout are excellent, I loved that the author surrounds Devon and Lincoln with so many wonderful people. I liked how supportive Devon’s teammates are, plus they add some fun and lighthearted moments. I also liked Lincoln’s therapist Dr Dawkins, their sessions were beautifully written and definitely a highlight for me. Great couple.

When shy hockey player Devon encounters urgent care nurse Lincoln at the clinic where his mother works, he is attracted to the young man, drawn to him in ways he doesn’t understand. Finally getting up the nerve to ask Lincoln out, he is disappointed when his offer is declined. Little does Dev know the broken man Lincoln is, medically discharged with physical scars and suffering from PTSD and nightmares, Linc doesn’t feel he is worthy of someone with all his “baggage”, tending to keep to himself when not working, protecting himself from being rejected once his personal problems become known. But Devon persists and eventually the two do connect, until an event which causes Linc to push him away. Unless Lincoln can get to a point he can cope with the PTSD episodes and be able to let Devon in, all is lost for the couple.

Two complicated, relatable characters find that spark but are hampered by a past trauma, seeking a breakthrough that will allow one to help and support the other to live with the pain of the trauma and to find their HEA.

I really liked the Lincoln's scenes with the therapist, as well as the way the author(s) handled the panic attacks, flashbacks, and dreams. He has PTSD from his time in the military. My beef: his story gets strung out through the first half of the book. I know it's a plotting technique, but it seems artificial.

Lincoln is an urgent care nurse, which he seems to have chosen over working in an ER for his own well-being. I wasn't sure if the blow-by-blow descriptions of what Lincoln did after work (not much) in the beginning of the book were deliberate or annoying. It could be that they were trying to show how small his world had become when he excluded any risk of pain or stimulation. He has clearly been running from stimulation as well as relying on others for help. The book centers on Lincoln's PTSD. Devon seems to present his own issues -he'sa NHL hockey star in the rink, but painfully shy off ice. His shyness is treated as almost pathological at the beginning of the book and I kept waiting for that to come up in more than a descriptive way. I kind of thought it was going to help them understand each other, but that thread doesn't really go anywhere.

This was my first book by this author but I will definitely read them again.

It is quite an angsty book, Lincoln comes with a huge amount of baggage, his life changed forever when he was injured overseas. I love how the author describes his struggles, his reluctance to push himself but especially how he managed to seek help, something he stubbornly thought he wouldn't need.

There is clearly the overall topic of not healing him, you can't heal from PTSD, but acceptance.

Devon is a sweetheart, too shy and quite for being a big sport superstar but caring and looking out for his friends, teammates and Lincoln. I love how he takes Lincoln's restrictions into account and gives him space but not giving up. There is a lot of strength in him.

These two fit together well, both come out of their respective shells when they learnt to open themselves up towards romance, especially Lincoln, who thinks he doesn't deserve the chance.

The secondary characters make the book a lot of fun, I hope for more as I find Devon's team needs their stories told as well.

I loved this book! It was my first from Haven Hadley and won't be my last!

Devon was a beautifully sweet character who became exactly what Lincoln didn’t want to need, yet couldn’t resist. Lincoln’s PTSD was portrayed with incredible depth and sensitivity, making his reactions completely understandable. However, this also meant that Devon went through a lot, sometimes making his struggles harder to read than Lincoln’s.

The supporting characters, including the therapist and the hockey team players, were all amazing and added so much to the story. Their support and interactions with the main characters enriched the narrative and highlighted the importance of a strong support system.

The journey this book took me on was nothing short of amazing. The chemistry between Devon and Lincoln was compelling, and the representation throughout the story was handled beautifully. The author’s phenomenal writing brought the characters and their experiences to life in a way that was both moving and memorable. I loved every moment of it!

Wasn't a fan of the writing style. I felt like there were too many pages w/o dialogue with only inconsequential scene direction or exposition; I get having some of it to set the stage, but the small things really just added up. Like Lincoln picking up his mail and then closing his blinds then popping a lasanga in the oven, like what was the point of spending a paragraph on each? Or Devon driving after a game, describing where they were going, who was going with him, and how he felt about them. That could've been integrated into the overall conversation itself as little snippets after they spoke about something rather than having a whole two pages of just exposition.

The little bits of romance between felt a little forced too, like Devon randomly thinking of Lincoln mid meal without there being anything to prompt it. Sure, that definitely happens, but it would've flowed better if something about the meal reminded him about his nondate instead of "Oh, Lincoln just randomly popped in my head."

I absolutely loved Devon’s and Lincoln’s story. A sweet hockey player who wants a partner in his life and an honorably discharged veteran with PTSD, now working as a nurse, trying to face his fears, one step at a time.
There’s an immediate connection, so many emotions from both sides. Chapter after chapter we as readers get to know both of them, their dreams, their hopes, worries and fears. Oh, the angst… Lincoln was killing me. Their HEA was hard fought. A rollercoaster of emotions. This book has it all. Supportive family, humor, good friends and teammates who will have your back no matter what. This book is sweet, a slow burn with the right dose of angst. It kept me captivated from page one. “Braking through the Pain” is book 1 in the Espen Jetties series and I am already looking forward to the second book.

Gosh, where to start with this book. We meet shy Devon, confident as the NHL Captain but so shy when meeting new people. He likes Lincoln but always finds himself stumbling and speechless. Lincoln is the character that will capture your heart. He has been through unspeakable trauma, witnessed unimaginable things and is just trying to find inner peace. He knows Devon is gorgeous, but he doesn't see his self worth, only the scars inside and out. The PTSD is crippling and he doesn't know what will trigger it. He feels that is a burden nobody should have to take on. This story is angsty, Lincoln is always awaiting a PTSD episode. When he suffers a major event he spirals and the fallout is just so sad. Devon learns how to catch him and their love is so deep and deserved. I became truly invested in these two, they felt like really special characters. I can't wait to continue with the series. I really loved Devon, but Lincoln frustrated me throughout most of the story. I understand he was going through something rough, but it irritated me that he’d push Devon away and when he decided to finally pull his head out of his butt, Devon accepted him back with open arms and no complaints. This happened multiple times throughout the story and Devon felt desperate at times, so their relationship felt unbalanced.

Devon and Lincoln had great chemistry, but I thought the progression of their relationship, once Lincoln stopped running, moved too fast. “I love you" came too soon, in my opinion, and I wish we’d had more time with them as a couple.

The story was enjoyable and I absolutely loved all the secondary characters, some of whom I hope to see in future installments in this series. While not my favorite book by this author, it was still a good read that I’d definitely recommend!

Oh my gosh! Love Lincoln and Devon together! They are so good to each other and so sweet that it melts my heart. I love how Devon gets shy around Lincoln. It's so adorable. They compliment each other well and are so in love.

Lincoln is an ex military EMS soldier who has dealt with heartbreak and has PTSD. He doesn't believe that he deserves to have anyone in his life to share. But in comes Devon, who is a hockey player and the son of the doctor Lincoln works for, and sparks start to fly. It's so cute how they meet and talk that you want to root for their relationship from the beginning. But beware, there are times you will need a tissue.

So if you love to read MM romance, witty humor, and some hot scenes..then definitely read this book!!.

I don't think my words can express how wonderful this book was. Emotionally intense. This author portrayed PTSD very realistic and she also gave the reader a healthy sense to therapy working it's job. She did not give the character a drug or alcohol addiction she gave this character a true personality with all the downs. And all the ups. She let the reader see a healthy alternative to PTSD.

She allowed dev to play a real part in Lincoln's life. She wrote dev so realistically. She made him a very human likeable character. He had his issues but together they made their way to a better life. It was real it was enjoyable and it was realistic.

This book was definitely emotional but she gave us some humorous parts. While hockey played a part in this book it took a back seat to the real reason of this book. Recovery from trauma in a healthy way.

The moment I was introduced to Devon, I knew it was a character I would like straightaway. He was such an enduring character, Captain of the team confident on the Ice, but shy and humble when not playing. He had a big heart.
Lincoln was a caregiver, now a nurse in urgent care, he was a honourably discharged Navy medic with PTSD. Locking up his heart, he didn't want a relationship, but he did not count on Devon. Lincoln's flashbacks were emotional reading, and at times there was a lump in my throat. Making their relationship not smooth sailing.
I loved all the secondary characters Maddison and Dr Dawkins, who were there for Lincoln and of cause all the hockey players who I can see having stories of their own.
As I was invested in Devon and Lincoln's story it was a quick read. I am looking forward to more in this series and am interested in reading their other series
