The Plantation Affair

Rate this book
During a time when love between two chaps was not spoken of, Deklan and Logan found a way to bring their affair of the heart to life. One was the white son of a wealthy Plantation owner, and the other a black servant who worked the property to survive.

This romantic fairytale took place in the deep south of Georgia in the late eighteenth century where horse carriages and kerosene lighted lanterns brought a town to life. Deklan and Logan’s affair was ignited one night with the help of a mysterious man who magically appeared and then disappeared without a trace after leading them into the realms of love.

Love was found, Love was lost and then Love was found again in a spiraling and uplifting fairytale between two lovable beings that were meant to be in love.

2.5/5 stars...

Logan lives as a servant to a rich family in Georgia in the 1800's. Not only is it frowned upon to associate with the hired help but Logan is also black and gay. Tollerance only goes so far, and in the deep south during this time Logan is not well tolerated. He suffers hatred from the other servants, enjoying his escapes down to the pond, taking moonlight swims. It's during one of these swims he first meets Deklan, the son of his master.

At a ball thrown in Deklan's honor intended for him to choose a bride, Deklan chooses Logan. Deklan's father is beyond outraged. A servant, a black man, and a man?! No, not his son. He puts the motions into play to find his son a suitable bride to marry and produce an heir. Successfully driving a wedge between Deklan and Logan. But fate won't be silenced and in several strange twists of fate, Deklan and Logan are given a second chance at love.

I loved the base concept of this story, an interacial gay love story with a Cinderalla twist. And the setting, the time period. I was born and raised in Georgia and I saw the hatred toward anyone different first hand. There were three kids of people accetable in heart of the south, Straight, White, strict Southern Baptist. Anything or anyone else was just wrong. So I could connect with that part of the story on a personal level. The struggle that Deklan faced trying to get his family to accept the person he loved was heart breaking, and very well conveyed.

Overall my connection with the story and the characters was choppy though. The story was sometimes sporadic and scattered, didn't flow well from start to finish. Some of the phrasings and words used confused me as well. I realize there are only so many words that can be used to describe the male anatomy, the love between two men and making love. But most of the phrasings for this story were too grandious or too childish, in my miniscule opinion.

I'm on the fence with this one. On the one hand I loved the story, concept and relationship between the two ML. But on the other hand when they were supposed to be in a passionate setting wheter making love or having sex, it came across more like a childrens book. Like the author couldn't decide between YA and NA. That and the choppy delivery of the book overall, made my rating a little lower than I wanted it to be.

At the time of my review this book is on sale for 99 cents, grab a copy and decide for yourself if it's a fantastic read, don't take my word for it!

This is a "cinderfella" story and you have to suspend all disbelief to read it. It is not a true historical more like an "alternate" reality. The story is set in the American South just after the end of the Civil War, That's about as close to reality as you ever see. The family and the "servants" aren't realistic. The story involves a "fairy godfather", a "Grand Ball" and a "Royal" family so to speak just like a Cinderella story. There are numerous issues that don't make this story work.
1. Numerous uses of the wrong words to describe things: he "expired" (should be retired) to the lake to swim; use of "reigns" instead of "reins"; "vanquished" instead of "vanished".
2. Negative comments about women in general including the disgusting comment that all body odors are caused by "women's private parts".

And I consider the following items as part of an "alternative world" rather then a lack of historical research.
1. Treatment of former slaves now "servants" as more equal then ever seen in a true historical setting.
2. semi-open displays of Male/Male affection and interest and open discussions of such in the family.
3. The family farm in the deep south is apparently an Almond farm in an area where almonds have never been a consistently commercially viable crop due to the fact that Almonds don't do well in humid environments. Especially considering that the crop of the day was usually either tobacco or cotton.
4. Logan seeing Deklan as a "prince" and numerous references to royalty of some type.
All of that just in the first half of the book. Even with my attempts to really enjoy this story, I'm unable to do so.

I was lucky enough to be gifted a copy of this book. In the beginning I thought it was going to be your typical Cinderella type story, but boy was I wrong! This story is set in the past and involves a couple of hot men! It's a story about finding your soul mate, true love and over coming many obsticales. It has overbearing parents who think they know what is best for their son, only to realize they could be wrong. It will tug at your heart strings as Deklan and Logan take you on their amazing journey to find happiness. Do they find it in the end; you will have to read it to find out! I will tell you that there is no cliffhanger.... But that is all I will tell you. I look forward to reading more from this author. Great job!

This was an outstanding enchanting romance between Deklan and Logan. This is a terrifically written story that takes you back in time to horse drawn carriages. Gentlemen and women with hoop skirts. A time when homosexuality was still a killing offense. A time when people of different color did not fall in love. To say that the deck was stacked against them was nothing but the truth. That is why this beautiful story was a magnificent fairy tale. I love this author and his writing style. Thank you Gregory Jonathan Scott for another outstanding book. I highly recommend this book!!

I was fortunate to beta read this sweet love story. At first I just figured it was a period piece set in the deep south just after the civil war. And it is! But it's so much more. There is a bit of a fairy tale involved and alot of sexual tension between two very very sexy men. The writing is stellar and you will be drawn into the sights sounds and heat of the south. Decklan and Logan are both swoon worthy men who will take you on a sweet sensual ride that you will not regret. There's is a love for the ages. Trust me you need to read this!!

I saw this and showed it to another who said it was "Gone-with-the-wind-esque." If you are reading this P, you know who you are.

It was the thought of that classic novel (I hated the movie, forgive me) that made me finally decide to take a chance on this one. I had never read Gregory Jonathan Scott before and I am happy I finally did. This was such a gorgeous book that turned out to be less off the GWTW and more of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella (fella). **Note: no, I am not talking about the Jerry Lewis movie!

Like all fairy tales, there has to be some form of fairy god-parent to assist the two lovers finally realize their happily ever after. Well, in this story, there is one but it was such a strange and inexplicable kind of assistance that I really doubt it was really that mythical creature involved.

I am ahead of myself, so let me backtrack a bit.

After the Civil War, Georgia is coming back on its feet and one of the more successful families is that of the Royals headed by Dante, Deklan's father. Deklan is the only child of the Royals and he may not really be spoiled but he did grow up with a silver spoon feeding him and a lot of servants. He is a good boy but his parents are worried about his future and they wanted him to be happy.

The Royal plantation houses numerous servants who have their own version of ranking. One of the lowest of the low ranked is Logan. He is the child of the former cook to the Royals killed in an accident a few years past and another servant. Thing is, their relationship was frowned upon by both servants and employers alike as theirs was a bi-racial love affair that produced a mulatto. Logan, though, he is a happy man who likes to keep within himself and have the animals he cares for as friends. He is trampled upon, laughed at, hit on and all kinds of abuse servants could think of, but he is still happy. From afar, he looks to Deklan, the owner's son, the prince of the plantation. He never dreamed that Deklan would look right back.

On a strange night when Deklan is to choose a bride, a fairy-god-father comes into the scene and helps Logan realize a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet and talk with Deklan. He arms him with clothes to rival the fashionista of the times and two items: a ring and a pendant. He only has until midnight, then all will disappear. Just like in that classic fairy tale. When midnight comes, Deklan is left with a broken heart and the ring. All he has to do is find the man, a mulatto, to fit the ring.

Unlike that classic fairy tale, when Deklan finally finds his soul mate, they are not met with wildly pinging bells and confetti thrown from the highest buildings. They are met with strife and the anger of Dante Royal who proclaims the relationship over and plans the wedding to a young woman of his choice
.

Thus, the story of Deklan and Logan's Plantation Affair unfolds and it is beautiful. Theirs may be a relationship that is doomed by the times but it is romantic. It is just gorgeously sweet. It is beautifully written.

This was a very hard book to put down. I never did.

The Plantation Affair is one of the top ten favorite Gay Romance books I have read this year! I have to say that I am so fan girling Gregory because his writing never ceases to amaze me. I love how he writes with such clarity that as I was reading I could see the plantation and the pear tree and I could picture Deklan and Logan together.

In The Plantation Affair we meet Deklan who comes from a rich family and Logan who is the farm hand and black. Deklan has always known there was something different about himself but he kept it to himself in fear that he would upset his family. Logan lost his father and mother and has no other family so he works on the farm to provide for himself. These two incredible guys could not have come from two different worlds but when they meet sparks fly and the two of them can't deny what they are to each other and how much they need each other.

But in the 1800's men being in love with men was not heard off let alone a white man loving a black man but this is what happened between Deklan and Logan. What is so unique about their story is it had components of the fairy tale Cinderella but so much more. I tell you Gregory has a way of weaving a story and hooking you in and keeping you there and wanting no needing more.

What Deklan and Logan go through is hard on them. They are not supposed to be together and what Deklan is made to do by his family will test their love. Logan will fight like hell to keep his man and Deklan in turn will fight like hell to be with Logan even though he knows they are in for a long and brutal journey.

But love knows who it wants and the heart will cling to who it wants. This is an amazing story about true love, soul mates, getting through prejudices and learning to live the life you were meant to. Gregory please give me more. I need more romance like this in my life!

This was the most interesting take on Cinderella that I’ve ever read or seen in a movie. Late 19th century South, a mixed race male lead and his heir to the Royal family male love interest as the other leading man, a little magic, harsh realities, the occasional understanding friend, and the parent who always thinks he knows what’s best for his child.

Logan and Deklan are, before anything else, two lonely souls that don’t really know what’s missing from their lives before they meet each other. When they do, they immediately connect, no matter where they run into each other, or what they are wearing. The guardian angel sent from the dead father from beyond the grave does get Logan closer to Deklan during his birthday party, but these two would have found their way to each other regardless.

Sharing a love of pears, animals, and deep love for each other, Logan and Deklan have no easy way out. They find each other in a time where everyone sees two men together as a sin, the fear of being killed over it all to real. The fact that Deklan is rich doesn’t help them much, not with his father determined to marry him off to some poor girl that has no idea what she’s getting into.

I loved the search for Deklan’s runaway prince, simply because he recognized Logan before putting the ring on his finger. Logan’s jealousy at the friend who was aiding with the search was another nice touch. The story is sweet and touching, while keeping you on alert, waiting to see what happens next. Will they make it? Will they get caught? Will Deklan really have to marry the lass because his father is too pig headed?

Gregory Jonathan Scott’s style is quite different from what mm books I’ve been reading. Descriptive, peppered with introspection, flowing nicely, and switching between Deklan’s and Logan’s points of view. All in all, a lovely read, you should all try it!

Wow, I don't think giving this book 5 stars is anywhere near enough, or can any words I write give justice to what a incredible read this was!
Set in 1883 in Georgia, it tells the story of Logan and Deklan, who realise they are soul mates, deeply in love and destined to be together. Logan works on the plantation that Deklan's parents own so already you know this is not going to be a easy case of boy meets boy.
Gregory Jonathan Scott has written a totally original story that takes you on a journey that I can only described as magical. This couple face so many obstacles during this book that my mind was one step ahead at all times, wondering, worrying where the story would end. Logan and Deklan took over my mind as well as my heart mainly because I could visualize and feel every scene, every emotion that all the characters were going through.
I don't want to spoil the story, this is a beautifully written book which you will have no choice but to keep turning the pages and find yourself unable to focus on anything around you until the last page. I think I've just gone through every emotion possible with goose bumps, heartache and stomach churning thrown in as well.
I have to congratulate this author, this is not a story I have read before and his imagination and way with words is astounding!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

The Plantation Affair is a modern day fairy tale, but with a twist. It's a beautiful love story about how love knows no boundaries.

The book is based on a time where slavery had just ended, but civil rights were still ignored. Where interracial couples didn’t happen without consequences and homosexuality was a crime. But the heart wants what the heart wants.

Logan worked at a Manor taking care of the animals, and Deklan was the master’s son. These two found each other despite their differences and their relationship gets put through its share of tests and obstacles. Can they survive all the expectations society puts on them, or does it tear their relationship apart?

I'm fairly new to the m/m genre, and have never read a historical romance. So in many ways this book was my first in this genre. I thought it had a great pace, but I didn’t care much for how the story was being told to us. I wanted to feel more, as though I was right there instead of reading about being there. Overall this book was written nicely and I did have a hard time putting it down. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fast m/m read with a historical twist.

This was a hard review to write, because I liked the book but there were some things I didn't care for. I give it 3 stars!

*ARC provided by the author in exchange for my honest review

I really loved the concept of this historical m/m read. It was a sweet and intense read that I completed in one sitting.

It’s based in the Deep South in the eighteenth century where men having relationships with other men, let alone of different ethnicity and class was definitely not favoured. Deklan is the white son of the rich plantation owner, Logan is the mixed race servant who is berated by his fellow workers.

This is roughly based on the classic fairy tale, Cinderella, with its own version of a fairy god mother (in this case a fairy god father) who appears to guide Logan on the night Deklan is to choose a bride. He supplies Logan with clothes to wear, a pendant and a ring in order to go see Deklan. At midnight Deklan finds himself alone with a ring his beloved left behind. And that is where the fairy tale ends as once Deklan finds Logan again, they are both at the mercy of the bigotry of the era.

It was a lovely descriptive read that encapsulates the surroundings and aura of the setting for the reader. The characters are well developed, believable and likable.

I’m not a fan of historical romance usually however I found this to be an eye opener and a lovely story to be told. A four star read for me.

I love reading M/M books. This book is a wonderfully unique story. It's not a typical love story. It's a historical romance. It's an interracial relationship. It's a M/M relationship. It's got a touch of fantasy in the story.

It's very Gone With The Wind meets Cinderella!

All of the characters are beautifully described and you instantly are attracted to each of them. mmmmm You can picture yourself in the whole story. It's explained so well that you can smell the flowers and feel the characters (you really do want to feel these characters). You want Deklan and Logan to find each other. The come along some obstacles that they have to overcome. Throw in some idiots who are very prejudiced and you have a wonderful love story.

It's a quick read and a very good story. Go check it out!

It's Cinderella in pants

This is a story of Cinderella with the fairy godfather and all. A classic tale that joins Deklan and Login together as soul mates. There is nothing that can come between their love. The reason I gave this loving tale a 3 1/2 stars is because to much was repeated too many times that it was starting to get annoying. The same words and description was used over and over. To describe their love, their love making ways and how they came together was like a broken record. You have to just change some wordings so you feel like you evolved into a new scene and a deeper connection.

Wow.. I loved this beautiful story, I fell in love with Logan and Deklan was a pleasure to read. Wonderfully written of a version of Cinderella's story only in a male male version. I'm a huge fan of the author's work and this just adds to it. This is a story where you find love sometimes you got a believe in magic. A fateful meeting under a pear tree for Logan and Deklan starts in events in 1883.

Doesn't anyone have a problem with the fact that the two men on the cover are obviously Caucasian?

Normally I don't notice covers but if you're writing about a dark skinned slave and a light skinned man well why not put that on the cover?

It's a bit weird...
