This was the most interesting take on Cinderella that I’ve ever read or seen in a movie. Late 19th century South, a mixed race male lead and his heir to the Royal family male love interest as the other leading man, a little magic, harsh realities, the occasional understanding friend, and the parent who always thinks he knows what’s best for his child.
Logan and Deklan are, before anything else, two lonely souls that don’t really know what’s missing from their lives before they meet each other. When they do, they immediately connect, no matter where they run into each other, or what they are wearing. The guardian angel sent from the dead father from beyond the grave does get Logan closer to Deklan during his birthday party, but these two would have found their way to each other regardless.
Sharing a love of pears, animals, and deep love for each other, Logan and Deklan have no easy way out. They find each other in a time where everyone sees two men together as a sin, the fear of being killed over it all to real. The fact that Deklan is rich doesn’t help them much, not with his father determined to marry him off to some poor girl that has no idea what she’s getting into.
I loved the search for Deklan’s runaway prince, simply because he recognized Logan before putting the ring on his finger. Logan’s jealousy at the friend who was aiding with the search was another nice touch. The story is sweet and touching, while keeping you on alert, waiting to see what happens next. Will they make it? Will they get caught? Will Deklan really have to marry the lass because his father is too pig headed?
Gregory Jonathan Scott’s style is quite different from what mm books I’ve been reading. Descriptive, peppered with introspection, flowing nicely, and switching between Deklan’s and Logan’s points of view. All in all, a lovely read, you should all try it!
