Nadine Dorries was born in Liverpool in the 1950s and raised on a council estate, the daughter of a bus driver. Her first novel, THE FOUR STREETS, was inspired by memories of her childhood, particularly her Irish grandmother who she was very close to.
Nadine trained as a nurse, then followed with a successful career in which she established and then sold her own business. She has been the MP for Mid-Befordshire since 2005 and has three daughters.
Nadine is currently working on her second novel, a sequel to THE FOUR STREETS.
3.5 stars. I have literally finished this book, picked up my phone and seen that Kemi Badenoch has just been announced as the new Tory leader. Just as predicted by this book written 18-24 months ago. I will leave others to draw their own conclusions…
What can I say! I’ve never read a political book before but the synopsis of this one grabbed my interest. This is an intriguing book that reveals the corruption that has gone on in the Tory party for years. I knew that the party had lost its way after Boris fell after Partygate but if this account of events is true, then you can forgive him for the backstabbing way his own party members lied and plotted against him way before then to get him out, despite his landslide victory in 2019. And I do believe Boris is innocent of the partying accusations made against him. I never liked Cummings and after finishing this book he’s far more wretched than I imagined. Gove is another awful narcissistic backstabber who worked with Cummings and Dougie Smith to plot against the prime minister. And then there’s the evil Doctor No who remains anonymous but is the most sadistic of the lot of them, an unelected politician who’s paid a salary by the government as an “advisor” but really he controls the party behind the scenes - he loves violence, sex parties, corruption, and has been a convicted criminal, yet this highly wealthy b somehow manages to keep his grip and control of the party.
As is often summed up, the people of Britain voted for Boris to “get Brexit done”, and this he delivered that all others failed at. Has it been good for the good of the country? Now that’s another question. But historical red wall labour voters that wanted to exit the EU voted for Boris (not particularly for the Tory party) and as soon as the backstabbers had removed him from office, the demise of the Tory party rapidly followed with not just one, but two failed prime ministers to follow him. And now, as predicted in the book way before it happened, surprise surprise, Kemi Badenoch is now their new leader!
I knocked one star off as towards the end of the book I felt the story had been told and it was becoming a little drawn out. However, it made a highly interesting read/listen, it was an eye opener, and thoroughly engaging. I’d recommend this book.
A very engaging book. I had just bought out by Tim Shipman but I decided to read this first. I am glad I did. I thought game of thrones was good fiction but this is the same. Perhaps I will rename some aliases to “little finger” and many of the Lannister’s and so on. Great Read that has changed my perspective on party politics in Britain and the car crash in the Conservative Party
I can only assume that the downvotes are politically motivated but this is a good book and you would think that if the allegations made in it could be factually traduced they would be. It must have taken immense courage to write and for that the author deserves much credit.
No wonder “ they” tried so hard to stop this being published. Initially, I thought it was a marketing ploy, however, as a Boris Johnson fan, Nadine was always going to be unpopular. It’s a shame that too often we run with the herd, presumably because it’s easy and less stressful. Well, I really enjoyed the narrative, gutsy and full of juicy gossip. Well worth the 3 days of reading.
