The Rugby Lovers

Every Move You Make

Rate this book
He’s been watching her for years, waiting for the right moment.
Isaiah Johanssen has built his life around two things: rugby and secretly loving his friend Robyn Cassidy. Since they met playing rugby in college, their stars have never aligned. But Isaiah isn’t worried—he has a plan.

Professional rugby player Robyn Cassidy is determined to show Isaiah she wants more than friendship, but every time she tries to get his attention, the words escape her. Normally bright and confident, she finds herself tongue-tied around her longtime crush.

So what happens when Del, her sexy and charming personal trainer, offers to be her flirt coach, only to find out he’s crushing on the same man? The same man who is now her head coach.

Maybe it’s time Del shows Isaiah exactly what he’s missing out on.
A spicy, friends-to-lovers romantic comedy with a guaranteed HEA, kink, and lots of praise. This is book 2 in the Rugby Lover’s series but can be read as a standalone.

ARC review

This was the first book by Sloan Spencer that I had the joy of reading. Having heard so many good things about her previous books, it was a no brainer to sign up for this one.

I mean, a MMF romcom with two rugby players (so there are some Thighs with a capital T. Watch any rugby video and you'll know) and their personal trainer with a great 🍑.

Throw in a cuck chair and so many hot hot hot moments and you have Every Move You Make.

Not a full 5⭐️ for me, simply because of the third act breakup, which happened a bit too late, making the ending feel a bit rushed and not fleshed out enough.

What I did love was the queer rep, the families and the joy that was very present in the book.

Read if you like:
🏉 Two idiots and a mastermind in Love
🏉 Rugby
🏉 Flirt Lessons
🏉 Grumpy/Sunshine
🏉 Light Stalking
🏉 Pining

Thanks Sloan Spencer for the ARC

This is the 3rd book I’ve gotten to ARC for Sloan Spencer and man, does the writing keep getting better. While not every kink in this book is something I like, the way it’s written is STILL hot. I enjoyed seeing the relationships blossom and depicting some difficult family relationships as well. Thank you for another great read, Sloan!

This book was a contemporary sports romance, featuring a polyamorous romance and the FMC is based loosely off of Ilona Maher! While you can see the initial resemblance to Ilona and how she's all for body positivity and that anyone can be feminine and strong, that's about where the similarities end; so no worries that it's like a mimic of the person herself.
The book is all about Robyn (the FMC) harboring unrequited love for two different guys (Dell & Isaiah) and eventually finding love with BOTH of them and navigating that new relationship in a very media focused world. Since all three of the characters in this book are famous in their own rights, they all face scrutiny when their relationship comes to light. Not only does Ilona have her own parents to face off against, but she has the outside world very interested in what she does and who she does it with. Dell & Isaiah both have potential issues, but if things go poorly it could affect Robyn's career more.
Obviously, since this is a romance book, there's a HEA. But the beginning of the book seemed to go very slowly and dragged a bit to get to a point where the throuple is actually together. Since the build up took so long, it was kind of a slower read since at first it was a lot of back and forth and missed opportunities. But once all three (eventually ... Isaiah is a freaking martyr) are together and the smutty action kicks up, it was much easier to make it through the book! It's cute as far as sports romances go, and I would recommend this one if you're into polyamory and a book loosely based off of Ilona.

I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't feel like Dell, Isaiah, & Robyn made much sense as a throuple. I liked Dell & Isaiah one on one, as well as Dell & Robyn one on one, AND Isaiah & Robyn one on one. But when it came to their dynamic all together, I wasn't a fan. It didn't seem organic or authentic. And the characters mention in their internal dialogue that during their times as a group, they forget one of the other members is even there. That's not really a good sign in my book for the longevity of the throuple.
The spice for this book was also kind of lacking. There were one too many kinks that were only touched on and not given much thought after an initial passing. The author seemed to be trying to cover a lot of different spice aspects instead of just committing to one. Because of all the different kinks thrown into the ring, it muddied things up a bit and the smut seemed vague as a result. 2/5 on the spice scale for me personally.

DNF @35%. I don’t typically review books I haven’t finished but this one was bad. Everything happening internally and externally is completely overwritten - the author writes as though she does not trust her audience to make inferences about anything. The prose was clunky and corny, and there were a handful of typos in the part I did manage to read. Isaiah was an INSUFFERABLE narrator and that’s really saying something when the other MMC is a gym bro literally named “Breaux”. I appreciate that the author was trying to honour Ilona Maher (who I love) but this missed the mark for me.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book and I loved it! I have read Angie and Rafael’s story and was thrilled to see another Johanssen sibling story. This family is BEAUTIFUL and gives you all the feels in both books.

I immediately fell in love with Robyn. She is perfect - A bad ass rugby player who is trying to embrace her feminine side. You also can’t help but love the relationships in this book. Not only between the main characters but with them and their friends and their families and even the public. Dell and Isaiah give you the absolute best of both worlds - they both gave so many kick your feet moments and the way they love Robyn and each other is so well written and honest.

This is a feel-good sports romance with some good spice! I can’t wait for the next book.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of this book.
I was beyond excited to read it, because very few authors write connection and love so deeply and beautifully as Sloan does, and it did not disappoint.
I have loved all the characters and their development, absolutely adored seeing all the side characters that have grown close to my heart in precious books, and also very much enjoyed the smut. I have to say, based on The Structural Duet, I was expecting there to be more scenes, and also, more detail, but it was delicious nonetheless.

I have two not so great things I´d like to mention, though, both just personal preferences.

One: the conflict. I have very much enjoyed the lack of third act breakups in Sloan´s previous books, so I had high hopes. I´m not saying that what happened in this one is a third act breakup, it was simply a conflict, but I did not enjoy it at all. It only had me screaming the solution and made me incredibly frustrated. And I had the feeling that it all got solved too fast and kind of... superficially. Like *snap* everything´s solved, but we don´t really see the emotions they go through during this solution or how they build their relationship up afterwards, what their dynamic looks like. I would definitely have loved to see a more in-depth chapter -or two- about that.

And two: The cover. Don´t get me wrong, I absolutely love the style of art and also the depiction of Isaiah and Robyn -altough so far, the cover for the Structural Duet books are my absolute favourites-. But damn, that art of Dell gives me the heebie-jeebies. That man on the cover looks like some weird cult leader that´s going to burn you alive and smile whilst doing it... I actively had to turn my ebook face down so that I don´t get a glimpse of him because it left me feeling uneasy. (I also pictured him looking more like Marco, but that might me because of the Dom-thing).

So, all in all, I loved this book and cannot wait to read more from Sloan. Now I´m going and rereading the Structural Duet straight away.

DNF 38% Wanted something to happen so I didn’t DNF, but almost halfway in and nothing. She writes really good and there was some hilarious banter between one of the MMC’s and his siblings which helped keep me reading. Just needed more forward moving.

Book club read!

Honestly, loved a light, silly read. Sloan Spencer does a great job writing to move the plot along without it being dry. There isn’t extensive description, and I was so okay with that. My one complaint is that I wish there was some romance just a tad earlier in the book, and maybe some more interpersonal tension once that started. Language was simple and accessible, and some lines had me laughing out loud. All in all, this one was FUN to read!

It’s exactly what you’d think and expect nothing more nothing less. Some of the spicy descriptions weren’t my favorite but it was still fine. For an MMF with and Ilona Mayer-esc woman I really can’t complain. But you’re not reading this for plot and we all know it ;)

Oh also super awkward to read on a train…

Nawww, what a cute and steamy MFM romance!

Dell (the flirty golden retriever with a big… meddling heart) was definitely the MVP of this lot. Great chemistry between all 3 characters, even if I wanted to smack the ‘hold out’ over the head (as usual, lol).

This book started out so promising for me. I thought it was going to be a 4⭐️read but sadly it started to fall apart around the 40% mark. I didn’t like the turn the characters made, almost becoming completely different then the first half of the book.
Isaiah- I almost DNFd around 50% because of this character. He starts out this grumpy, quiet, strong man. At one point I remember feeling almost uncomfortable with him. He had this childlike reaction to life that was just unpleasant. Whenever he was unpleasant he can’t just tell his family what he needs. He just rushes to the baby niece and nephew and holds them. Like he can’t use his words to communicate. Then his best friend suggests a marriage pact when they are 35 they’d get married. He of course says yes and then for years he cockblocks any potential boyfriends, stalks her and saves himself for her. They were in their 20s when they made this pact! He avoids her for like 4 years I think bc he’s afraid she’ll be mad about all of that but it’s ok cause they’ll be married in just a few more years. What grown ass adult thinks like that. I’m so frustrated I cannot get into words what I feel. It just, it just felt like how a middle schooler might function if the marriage pact was offered. This man saved himself for years because he was in love with her and yet he hid from her. WTF. I also didn’t buy the whole virgin angle. I’m fine with someone being inexperienced in sex. Your choice you do what you want but I just didn’t buy that dynamic. It felt forced. This big burly, popular, professional rugby player is so inexperienced he cums in his pants simply by being kissed? There was so much going on in this book!
Dell- I thought I’d like him to my surprise. The beach boy flirt is not really my type. And then he became a completely manipulating douchbag. I freaking called dibs on Isaiah’s virginity. A 33 year old man who knows Isaiah has been saving himself for Robyn, the woman he’s been in love with for years and he calls dibs AND THEN GOES THROUGH WITH IT!!!! I hated him by the end of this book.
Robyn- she was the best character for me but still didn’t stand out enough for me. Maybe it’s because the actual relationships again were surface level and I didn’t feel the connection after that 40% mark.
Then we get the third act breakup thrown in there and I wanted to throw the damn book. Its like there was a list of troupes and instead of filtering them and using the ones that would work best it was let’s just use them all- grumpy sunshine, falling for your best friend, virgin hero, third act breakup……and more.

When I first picked up this book, I was so excited to read it. It delivers the happily-ever-after that America’s favorite female rugby player deserves, and there are plenty of sweet and adorable moments between the characters.

That said, I felt like there were just too many plot points packed into the story—almost too many HEAs.

Spoilers Ahead:

Robyn, Isaiah, and Dell were incredibly sweet together, and the spicy scenes were well-written and well-executed. However, the sheer number of tropes and plotlines made the story feel overwhelming rather than engaging.

Just to name a few: virgin hero, secret relationship, porn star, grumpy/sunshine, love from afar, secret polyamory, sports romance, wanting kids, marriage, cuckold, and Daddy kink. It felt like the book was trying to do too much at once.

Robyn and Dell were my favorite characters because they stayed true to themselves throughout the book. Isaiah, on the other hand, was my least favorite. His personality shifts—from being a grumpy, borderline stalker and a terrible coach to suddenly transforming into someone completely different—felt too abrupt and jarring. I understand that his character was meant to go through a transformation, but instead of making me root for him, it just made him less likable.

Ultimately, this book just wasn’t for me. But I’m happy that Robyn (Ilona) got her HEA—she absolutely deserves it!

I was so fortunate to receive an ARC copy of this book!

I absolutely adored Every Version of You so when I saw that another of the Johanssen siblings was getting their own story I was so excited! Whilst some characters do make an appearance you don’t need to read Every Version of You but I highly recommend it just because it’s a great time.

When the ARC copy of Every Move You Make landed in my emails I was so excited!

I adored the family dynamics in Angie & Raf’s book and was so happy that was translated again into Isaiah’s story.
Right from the start the chemistry between Dell, Robyn and Isaiah was so strong, Dell is such a loveable flirt and I completely understand why neither of them could resist him.

I loved all three MC’s. I’m going to need more books with female Rugby teams though, I adored the teams dynamic and wanted even more of it! I was however horrified by Isaiah’s handling of the Guinness. It may be unforgivable!

There was really love representation of their dynamic all the way throughout, the constant communication even during intimate moments. Without giving too much away the spicy phone call was such a wonderful moment to witness boundaries being put in place without it disrupting the flow and all of the parties being respectful and caring towards one another whilst keeping the sexiness of the scene. Spencer pays attention to little details that often get overlooked and I really appreciated the layer that adds to the characters interactions and relationships.

I really loved getting to see their relationship work from all sides, we get to experience moments of them all together but also moments of just Dell & Robyn, Robyn & Isaiah and Dell & Isaiah.

This whole story was just a whirlwind of joy. I had so many kicking my feet at the cuteness moments and I already had high hopes for the spicier scenes after Every Version of You and Spencer did not let me down. Overall this was a great read, it was wholesome, spicy and just left me feeling all warm and fuzzy!

Robyn is a professional rugby player who has had a crush on her friend Isaiah for years but life kept getting in the way, so she never got to tell him how she felt. She accepts help in the form of flirting lessons from her personal trainer, Dell, but it turns out they have a crush on the same man! So, Dell takes a chance on them and tries to get all three of them together. Since Isaiah is Robyn's coach and Dell and Robyn are social media celebrities, the true difficulty is figuring out how to balance their new polyamorous relationship and their careers.
I really loved how Robyn was confident in her femininity and used her social media platforms to encourage others. All three main characters were lovable, and I was hooked from the start. However, I felt that it got resolved a little too quickly and we didn’t get to see them navigate the challenges they ran into and how that affected their relationship. I would have loved another chapter or two for that.
We really got to see Robyn and Isaiah’s friendship develop over the years in the flashbacks and then the different POVs showed us their developing relationships with Dell. Also, seeing how the community supported their love and how they battled for their happiness was soo amazing.

✨ Every Move You Make ✨

~ MMF
~ Friends to Lovers
~ Spicy Romantic Comedy

4.5/5⭐

✨My Thoughts ✨
This book was everything I needed in a spicy romantic comedy. This book truly didn't disappoint. I loved every moment. Robyn was a great FMC. The rugby team she plays on is everything. I seriously want to be friends with all of them. The growth with all the characters was so good. This book is spicy and kinky. I loved every second of it. I loved seeing other characters from previous books. I think everything flowed so well. I am excited to see if we get more in this rugby world. I can't recommend this one enough for those who love a spicy why choose but still want romcom vibes.

Every Move You Make is book 2 in The Rugby Lovers Series. This book is recommended for 18+. As always please check TW before reading. This book is out now!

✨ I want to thank Sloan for an E-ARC of this book. These are my own true thoughts ✨

I was blessed to receive an ARC copy of every move you make, and am so grateful for the opportunity!

I absolutely adore the way Sloan writes her characters, they are real, raw, and at times messy.

I loved the flash backs for Isiah and Robyn, and getting to experience their past, while getting to experience their developing relationships with Dell. And seeing the way their individual’s personalities interact to form their beautiful dynamic.

I also love the family dynamics of the Johansson family, and the chaos is so Reminiscent of my own, it feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket. I love how this has come across in this book as well as every version of you!

I think I say this about every new Sloan Spencer book, but this might be my new favorite!

ARC REVIEW!

This is not my first go-round with miss Sloan Spencer. Last year I read her Structural duet and was hooked! It should come as a surprise to no one that this book hooked me as well (and was my first rugby romance!!). Plus we all know I love an MMF romance. This book checks a lot of boxes for me. 🥰

Robyn, Isaiah and Dell are an adorable little throuple who understand the importance of love and support through thick and thin. Robyn was an absolute stunner, and is the type of body positive role model I wish I had growing up. Isaiah is the protective grump with the sweetest of hearts. And Dell is the easy-going thirst trapper, who’s got some serious daddy dom vibes. These three fit together so perfectly, it was beautiful to read!

This is my first book by Sloan Spencer, and I had such a fun time reading this book! I love books with strong female main characters, and Robyn is just that! She was a professional female athlete as well as a champion of women on social media. This book is a sports romance, and Why-choose polyamorous relationship is what drew me into this book, and it did not disappoint. I loved the spicy support for each other, family support, dating lessons, and the little taboo nature of all of their relationships! These MCs were beautifully written, and I loved Dell's Daddy Dom nature. Isaiah was ready to Sub for him in an instant! My only issue is that it went from them being friends to starting a relationship and immediately saying I love you seems really fast, and I would have liked to see them develop their feelings more on the page together, for the "L" word was used. But overall, this book was fun, flirty, and full of love and dirty-talking spice, and I would recommend you pick up this book.

Thank you to Happily Booked PR and Sloan Spencer

This throuple stole my heart! I was obsessed with every single deliciously awkward, tension-filled moment of Isaiah and Robyn’s love story. Isaiah is the ultimate book boyfriend—strong, broody, secretly so soft. Robyn is this fierce, talented (pro!) rugby player who can take down opponents with ease but turns into a mushy pile of goo when it comes to her men.

And then there’s sweet, charming, utterly chaotic Dell. whose **flirt coaching** turns into one of the most hilariously complicated love triangles I’ve ever read. Watching these three navigate their tangled feelings had me cackling one minute and clutching my heart the next.

And let’s not forget the spice! The tension was palpable, the chemistry was off the charts, and the payoff was absolutely worth it.

If you love friends-to-lovers, why choose, and heroes who praise like it’s their full-time job, this book is your next obsession.

This was such an enjoyable read! I fell in love with each character and their interactions with one another were so sweet, funny, and quite hot (I mean dang Dell!).

I appreciated how thoughtful and considerate each of the three were towards each other, especially when dealing with their issues. I thought there was a good balance between story and spice, and I think the big conflict was done well.

I loved Spencer's writing, especially the humor throughout, and I can't wait to read more. I highly recommend this book and I'm excited to read the rest of the series.

DNF: I can’t really pinpoint something negative about this book, but I just couldn’t find it in my to care for the story or characters. I was sold on the Ilona Maher inspo arc and the trainer trying to get the fmc and mmc together, which turns into poly. But I wasn’t even mildly entertained. Finally decided to call it quits at 48%.
