Deceived

IN THE MIDST OF THEIR GRIEF, THE WRIGHT FAMILY IS PUSHED TO THEIR LIMITES by a stranger who will change their lives forever.

A single phone call sets off a chain of events that will test Justin’s every belief.

When a mysterious woman claims kinship, Justin’s instincts scream deception. But when they meet, her mesmerizing appearance shatters his doubts, unveiling a truth he never saw coming.

Justin keeps the woman’s existence hidden from Michael as his son grapples with a relentless stalker, a malicious wife, and a patient who suffers from a compulsive disorder — an affliction that leads her down a path from which she’ll never return.

In this fifth Justin Wright novel, secrets collide and loyalties are tested with unexpected twists that propel you deep into a world of suspense and intrigue where nothing — and no one — is as it seems.

Wowie! This is one of my all-time favorite series as Kaufman doesn't hold back with his creepy, dark surprises and this is book 5--fortunately, 6 is being written as this one leaves you with your jaw on the floor! Justin is mourning Mandy's death from cancer when he gets a call from Monica--"Mandy's family" with a twist we didn't see coming. Then we have dad Michael who is treating Amanda for her social anxiety and depression (and a host of other things). This is such a great, convoluted storyline that had me gasping continuously until the end where I might have let out a little scream! How can one series keep getting better and better?? The awesome thing about it is you can start with any of the books and get the backstory, or start at book 1--which I recommend--and you feel like you really know this family (you may need therapy but it will be worth it)! Now I'm breathlessly awaiting number 6 so I can pick up my jaw and leave the couch!😳

I got this ebook from the author Rob Kaufman and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Deceived is one of them books that walks in quiet, shuts the door behind it, and then starts digging around in everybody’s secrets. This story is heavy on grief, family trouble, old wounds, and people showing up at the worst possible time with truths nobody asked for.

Justin is still trying to live with the loss of Mandy, and you can feel that hurt sitting in the room with him. Then Monica comes into the picture, and that whole situation puts a strange, uncomfortable pull on the story. It is not just about who she is, but what she wants, what she is hiding, and how far she might go to get it.

Michael had me stressed half the time. Between Gayle, Benji, Daniel, and everything else pressing down on him, it felt like the man could not catch one clean breath. The custody tension and family mess gave this book a sharp edge, and Benji is the kind of character that makes you want to keep one eye open around him.

What I liked most was how the story kept several fires burning at once. Justin’s grief, Michael’s fear, Monica’s motives, Amanda’s troubles, and Janelle’s situation all made the book feel packed with pressure. It is not a calm read. It is more like sitting in a room where every wall has a crack in it, and you are just waiting to see which one gives way first.

My only small issue is that there is a lot going on, and a few times I had to slow myself down to keep every piece straight. This is book 5, and it feels like part of a bigger storm, so I would not tell somebody to jump in here without knowing the earlier books first.

That ending was a dirty trick in the best kind of way. It did not wrap everything up neat and pretty. It left me wanting answers, and I reckon that is exactly what it was meant to do.

I give it a 4 outta 5 catfish!

deceived

What an ending! How could you do that to us?! As for the rest of the book, loved it but at first I was getting confused so many characters at once and had to go back and read some parts again. How long do I have to wait for book 6! Better be real soon.

Quit while you're ahead!!

Okay, first I want to apologize to the author for not writing a review on each of the first 4 books, but I like to review the series once complete. Unfortunately this book did not end the series. Book 5 was my least favorite of all, the unbelievable gullibility of a "well known psychiatrist" finally took me over the edge. The initial character development was good but each character eventually falls into situations both predictable and boring. I found myself speed reading this book trying to find more focused, exciting plot points to get me past the redundant storyline. So sorry, just painful.

The 'twisties'

This story did not hold my interest because of the predicability. Introducing more Familia Trauma and sudden appearance of relatives was not well received by this reader. Justifying ongoing trauma was concerning for me and characters moving fr9m relationship to relationship was not 'Freud / Junger' approved.
The ending was a cliffhanger, which will be the reason to read the next book.

I absolutely love this series. The characters are well developed and easily understood. The complexities of the story keep you invested in where this is all going. The ending will make you scream 😱 with frustration, but you will come back for more. I finished this in one day, and I guarantee I will read it again the day before the next book is released. This author is amazing 👏
