Lexy's wedding becomes a crime scene when a murderer dares to strike on her big day in this superbly plotted and wickedly funny cozy.

Lexy Campbell is getting married! But in the six months of planning it took to arrive at the big day, she has become . . . a challenge. Friendships are strained to breaking point, Lexy's parents are tiptoeing around her, and even Taylor, her intended, must be having second thoughts. Turns out it's moot. Before the happy couple can exchange vows, Sister Sunshine, the wedding celebrant, is discovered dead behind the cake, strangled with the fairy lights.

Lexy's dream wedding is now not just a nightmare: it's a crime scene. She vows not to get drawn into the case, but the rest of the Last Ditch crew are investigating a bizarre series of goings-on in Cuento's cemetery, and every clue about the graveyard pranks seems to link them back to Lexy's wedding day. Will the Ditchers solve the case? Will Sister Sunshine's killer be found? Will Lexy ever get her happy ever after? Not even Bridezilla deserves this . . .

This series is full of humour, mostly derived from the culture shock of a down-to-earth Scots woman who finds herself living within a community of Californians who have a very alternative view of Life. What prevents this from being a snide-fest is the warmth of the friendships that were cemented through the pandemic and have forged a strong bond among this disparate group of quirky characters.

This time around, the group have returned to California after their Christmas adventures in Scotland, visiting Lexy’s mum and dad – and Lexy is planning her wedding. However, after announcing to anyone who’ll listen that she’s going to stay grounded and sensible throughout, after hiring a wedding planner called Sister Sunshine, Lexy loses the plot.

McPherson’s depiction of a bride-to-be who has lost all sense of perspective is extremely funny – more especially as the book is written in first-person viewpoint. It takes skilled writing to give the reader an insight into a protagonist who isn’t behaving very well, without having her lose the reader’s sympathy. It helps that this is the seventh book in the series, so I know Lexy fairly well and generally like her very much.

Meanwhile, the mystery the investigative team are working on is frankly bonkers. They are trying to discover the identity of someone who is defacing certain graves at the local cemetery, having been hired by a quartet of local historians who are passionate about protecting the dignity of the hapless inhabitants of said cemetery. As with all the Last Ditch adventures, while the mystery gives the group a purpose and provides some of the action and pace within the story – the narrative is actually all about the people within the group. This time around, the focus is on Lexy and Taylor’s wedding – or rather, Lexy’s wedding. Taylor isn’t having all that much to do with it, other than looking a tad worried and tip-toeing around his beloved bride.

I wasn’t particularly convinced by the murder mystery, either – which verges on being plain ridiculous. And I didn’t care one little bit. I giggled and grinned through all the daftness finding the story a heap of fun and hoping that I don’t have to wait too long before I’m treated to another yarn featuring Lexy and her wonderfully eccentric family – including her parents and her tight-knit found family. Highly recommended for mystery fans who like their cosies with a large dollop of amusing quirkiness. While I obtained an arc of Scotzilla from the publisher via Netgalley, the opinions I have expressed are unbiased and my own.

I love this series, with all the quirky characters that I will leave you to meet at your leisure... Obviously, it's book 7 of a series and we all know what that means by now. Especially as it is a cracking series, once I got into it, after a mixed reaction to book one, it really did take off and not I look forward to each new release...
So... Lexy's big day is approaching and doesn't EVERYONE know about it. Her parents finally got over the fact that she wasn't going "home" to Scotland for the shindig, agreed to fly in early enough to assist with the "arrangements".
But the big day doesn't go according to plan. When does it ever in fiction?! But it is not Lexy with the cold feet. No, it's Sister Sunshine the "wedding planner" who has them. And they are cold because she is dead!
We then go back in time to see more of the run up to the big day. About how Lexy and her crew get involved in weird shenanigans that are occurring in and around the local graveyard.
But I am going to leave the rest for you to discover as the author intends. As fun and frolics and shenanigans more definitely occur. Some very funny, others rather tragic.
I love these books. The characters are quirky and the plots a bit bonkers. And I mean both those things in a really good way! I especially loved Lexy in this book as she turned into bridezilla in the run-up to what she wanted to be the perfect wedding for her and Taylor, in spite of everything being thrown at her...
And with scant waffle and no padding, the author really packs a lot into the book. Not a single word is wasted which means that it gets on with itself very well indeed. Apart from a wee slower bit at the beginning when things are setting up (a refresher for some, an introduction for others) but after this is done it's away we go...
To be honest, as things started getting juicy, I was trying to work out where in the heck we would end up, but it all kicked off very well and, eventually, became a race to the very satisfying ending. Which left me sitting back and applauding the author for her juggling skills with the plot and ability to bring it all together at the end!
All in all, a cracking addition to an already impressive series, roll on next time. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Our favourite Scottish marriage counsellor Lexy Campbell is marrying keen ornithologist (and younger guy) Taylor. Unfortunately, this has turned her into Bridezilla but she's Scottish, so Scotzilla. She's completely oblivious while her friends and family are quietly despairing, especially when she hires someone called Sister Sunshine as her wedding planner.

Meanwhile, Trinity for Life (the detective/counselling/designer service she Kathi and Todd set up) has been engaged by a wacky group of four cemetery volunteers who call themselves The Sexton Beetles, but because of Todd and Kathi's phobias Trinity rename them the Sex Volunteers (because that sounds better?). Anyway the volunteers have come for help because someone/a group of someones is decorating graves, often in an unkind way, highlighting physical characteristics of the deceased or implying things about them. The volunteers have gone to the Police and the local press but no-one will take them seriously. Cue a lot of skulking around graveyards.

Then, just before the ceremony, Lexy's wedding planner is found murdered by a string of fairy lights. Can the gang solve the crime?

I'll be honest I wasn't feeling this AT ALL as you can guess because I have only just finished this over a month after it was published. It felt like the cemetery capers and Bridezilla went on for over half the book and frankly the murder of Sister Sunshine felt like an afterthought. The running round in circles got old quick and I didn't get the same vibe from the other inhabitants of the Last Ditch Motel. Maybe its because its the seventh book in the series and by the time everyone has done their special 'thing' half the book has gone and there's not enough room for plot. Maybe its because I could see some things coming a mile off. IDK. Hopefully this is just a 'it's not you it's me' thing because I loved the last book. Also I see from the acknowledgements that the book was written during a difficult time for the author so maybe that had some influence?

Scotzilla is the seventh cozy(ish) Last Ditch mystery by Catriona McPherson. Released 3rd Dec 2024 by Severn House, it's 240 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats. Paperback due out in late 3rd quarter 2025 from the same publisher. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

This is such an exuberantly fun murder mystery. An ensemble cast who are a found family of oddballs living in and around a small motel, living their lives in one another's pockets and solving a string of odd/cruel pranks in a local cemetery and the occasional murder. They couldn't possibly be more disparate; plucked from different cultures, socioeconomic strata, backgrounds, orientations, and family makeups, they're knitted together by circumstances and their apparently genuine fondness for one another.

Faced with an indisputably murdered corpse, they are determined to sleuth out the guilty party and set about investigating in their own inimitable way. The "whodunit" and "how" is an impressively funny comedy of errors which reads like a cross between I Love Lucy, Scooby-Doo, and Queer Eye, with a little comedic Lost in Translation for good measure.

All the dispararate subplots wind together quickly into a satisfying (and exciting) denouement and resolution. The author has quite a talent with comedic timing.

Four and a half stars. Definitely a good one for fans of comedic light murder cozies. It would make an excellent choice for public library acquisition, cozy fans, or a great series binge/buddy read.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Lexy was the last person I thought would morph into a Bridezilla! But when Taylor popped the question they had their ideal wedding planned out - small, intimate and a blend of them. Now it's coordinated everything, Lexy is having a meltdown over fairy lights and to top it off - the wedding planner has just been found dead!

Then get to back in time and see how Lexy, Taylor and co from the Last Ditch ended up in this mess! We see the fervour take hold of Lexy and poor Taylor has to walk on egg shells around her. The mystery at the graveyard intertwines with the wedding story and we see how Sister Sunshine gets involved with Lexy's big day.

I must admit I love all the snarking, b*tchy humour between the Last Ditch Crew. They all have flaws and foibles and they just live loud and proud with their weirdness. When Lexy snaps out of her "coma" you can feel the sense of relief from the gang. There were plenty of twists and turns and Sgt Molly is at her snarky best.

It's true that no-one can write a Scot quite as well as another Scot and that shines through in this book. All the wee Scottishisms and idiom sprinkled through gave me a smile. I know more than a few folk who fill their suitcases with foodstuffs to take on holiday - they're going to mainland Europe, not the moon and Lexy's parents are just as quirky.

I loved the wee reveal at the end - I had a bit of a sniffle I'll admit and I just can't wait to see what happens with my favourite ex-pat next!

I love a good cozy that also makes me laugh. Lexy is such a well written character and we love diving into whatever shenanigans she and her crew are up to.

Are we finally going to have a wedding? After all these months of planning, stressing, and maybe being a bridezilla it looks like she may get down the aisle yet!

But when is anything that easy? And of course someone gets themselves killed at the wedding venue! Now it’s a crime scene. One she is not going to delve into. With her crew looking into the weirdness happening at the cemetery, it kind of leads back to her wedding. Now she has to jump in.

One of the best cozies out there!

Scotzilla, the seventh book in the Last Dish Mystery series by Catriona McPherson delivers laughs, twists, and plenty of quirky charm as the lovable (and often dysfunctional) Last Ditch crew dives into yet another wild case. The humor is sharp, the pacing brisk, and the blend of cozy crime and eccentric hijinks is as addictive as ever. Lexy is at her frazzled best—frustrated, funny, and utterly relatable.

A laugh-out-loud, twisty romp that proves even murder can’t stop a determined bride (or her meddling friends). If you love your mysteries with equal parts heart, humor, and havoc, this one’s a must-read. Just maybe don’t invite Sister Sunshine to your wedding.

This ARC book was complimentary…provided my the Publisher and NetGalley. I am voluntarily my honest review.

This author is versatile and writes in several different styles (this is the thirtieth book of hers which I have read) and this book is the seventh book of a humorous series set in a motel in California and the fifth one in this series which I have read.

As usual the story is told from the first person perspective of Lexy Campbell. Lexy is about to get married and has become more and more demnding (hence the title of the book) but when the big day arrives her celebrant (who had also planned the wedding) is found dead at the wedding venue. In the preceding six months there have been various pranks at the cemetery and Lexy and her friends wonder if these were related to the murder. The author has written much better books and I may be being over-generous by giving this three stars.

Lexy Campbell & Taylor are getting married but who knew that our bride-to-be would become a bridezilla in the six months leading up to the midsummer solstice event? But quirky wedding celebrant Sister Sunshine is found strangled with the fairy lights before she could perform the ceremony. Meanwhile, Trinity Investigations have been hired to investigate a series of weird pranks at the Cuento's cemetery. They eventually link the pranks to Lexy's wedding day.
Can they solve the case allowing Lexy & Taylor to get married?

This was another hilarious entry in the Last Ditch mystery series.

I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and Severn House. All opinions are my own.

I won this book in a drawing at an online presentation by the author. It's the first time I've read any of her mysteries. This book is written in a witty style and has quirky characters, but I had trouble following the story. I've read book series out of sequence by other authors and would be able to understand the backstory, but not in this one. The "Sex Volunteers" in Scotzilla seemed to be important, but I couldn't figure out why. Also, the murder of the wedding planner didn't occur until well after halfway through the book, and I never figured out how the pranks being pulled at the cemetery throughout the book connected to the murder.

I think this is a series that I am just done with. It has run its course. I liked the last book that was set in Scotland and probably should’ve stopped there. It felt like an ending to me. This book was just a mess. The characters are more erratic than ever and nothing just seemed to make sense. I couldn’t keep up with it. I read the beginning and skipped to the end to see what happened and was glad I didn’t bother with the middle. Really enjoyed the earlier books in the series. This one does not compare.

I read a library book.

I adore this series, and I sure hope it continues. The writing is superb, and the characters and their interactions provide a boatload of humor. There is never (seldom?) a straight-forward plot, but the story moves at a great pace, and there are plots twists enough to keep me guessing. It was fun to see Lexy's parents again, too! Now I just have to wait on the next installment. Hope it comes soon!

I'll admit right off that the murderer was a bit far fetched, and violated several if the rules of fairness. I don't really read this series for the mysteries, though; they're just a bonus. I read them for the characters and their dialogues, and they never disappoint. This one had me laughing out loud, although I read it at a time I was extremely stressed. It may have saved my sanity.

approaching and this entry in the series really delivers. I’ve always loved this series. From the quirky and lovable characters to the solid mystery filled with red herrings, sprinkled with humor and endearing moments as well. Each entry in the series leaves me satisfied.

The many readers of this series knew that Lexie Campbell's wedding would be anything but normal and smooth-going. But, it is one of the most interesting weddings you'll encounter. This series is one of my favorite!

Have read the first two or three of this series some years ago with mild interest in the cultural differences displayed as reflecting some of my own discoveries when younger. Then I noticed this title in the "new books" shelf of our library. Gave it a go, but glad I didn't buy it.

The first few pages were so full of effing fury I was truly put off, but clearly the premise needed this sort of histrionic cartoon behaviour for the first chapter's necessary 'climax'.

Well .... icky. Characters did not entice, a crushed Bridezilla did not attract and it would seem from a brief flit through the rest of this effort, the puzzle was not worth it.

Therefore..."last ditch" indeed! I'm outta here.
