For fans of FIVE FEET APART, this emotional and romantic YA offers an unflinching look at not only the realities of heart failure, but at memory, grief, guilt, and what it means to live—in spite of another, because of another, for another. For yourself.
Sydney Wells should have died. She was supposed to die.
She never expected, after years of waiting, to receive a heart transplant. Now, seventeen-year-old Sydney doesn’t know what to do with her life. Her daily routine consisted of staying indoors, eating heart-healthy foods, and posting about her transplant list experiences on TheWaitingList with her long-distance BFF (and heart failure buddy) Chloe.
Now, Sydney latches onto the one thing that gives her learning as much as she can about the person whose heart she inherited. After finding the family of her likely-donor, Mia, Sydney falls deep into her world—and may also be falling for Mia's best friend, Clayton.
But Sydney isn’t the only one hiding something. Mia’s brother Tanner won’t talk to Clayton, and Clayton won’t tell Mia why. And hundreds of miles away, Chloe’s health has taken a turn for the worse. Sydney needs to face what’s in her heart—the truth, the guilt, and the future—before it’s too late.
im pretty sure the average person rarely thinks about how much time they have left to live or what they will do with that time. so i appreciate how this story can take a feeling that not many people experience and make it relatable in quite a meaningful way.
this story expertly explores what it means to be given a second chance and how to use it, the complexity of grief and gratitude, the things that make life worth living, and just how much nuance surrounds every day life. sydney is such a genuine character and i found a lot of value in reading about her journey, even if it is fictional.
and honestly, the only thing stopping me from rating this higher is that i was constantly comparing this to “the things we know by heart,” which is a similar story, but one that i prefer more.
but still, that doesnt take away from the insightfulness and beauty of this book!
I believe this will 100% be a bestseller. A beautiful story of a girl who gets a heart transplant and all the guilt that comes along with it. Why did she get the heart and not one of her friends that also needs it? Why did someone else have to die for her to live? I can only imagine that I would struggle with this too if I were in her situation. She has to come to terms with how to live and move forward.
I think this story is unique, because most books about sick teens explore the before transplant times and are usually about when they are at their sickest. This book is about what it’s like for someone who gets the second chance.
I won’t lie to you, you will need tissues for this one. About 3/4 of the way through, I was crying. This book is beautiful, tragic, and uplifting all in one.
There is romance, but it is very much PG, nothing spicy. This focuses more on second chances and finding yourself.

Fani „Trzech kroków od siebie” i „Gwiazd naszych wina” stracą dla niej głowę. Wzruszająca, nieprzewidywalna i delikatna w swoim smutku. Miałam kilka zarzutów co do zachowań bohaterów, jednak okazały się one niezbędne do osobliwego zakończenia. Pióro Erin jak zawsze nie zawodzi 💞
Erin Stewart does it again and delivers a beautiful and heartbreaking read about grief and second chances.
This review won’t be long as I don’t think I could write anything that will do this book justice and how it made me feel. All I can say is that it absolutely moved me and wrecked me in the best way possible. I loved all the characters. From the protagonist Sydney who felt so many conflicting emotions at being able to survive at the expense of someone else’s life. From Clayton who was sweet and kind and grieving over the loss of his best friend. From Chloe who was desperately waiting for her own heart transplant. From Sydney’s parents who loved and protected their daughter so fiercely. From Tanner who wished for more time with his sister.
There were a lot of heavy topics in this book but the author did an amazing job of tackling them in a real and honest way. I also wished I was the type of person who annotates books because the amount of lines that I had to reread and that just brought me to tears were too many to count. I was just an emotional mess all through this book, especially in the last third.
All in all, I adored this story and now I’m just begging everyone to read her books🙏🏻 HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend🙈
A wonderful powerful story about life. The way this story pulled at my heartstrings 😭 I even shed a tear or two. The emotion I felt while reading this was very real. The characters really made you feel like you knew them personally and were on this journey with them. I can see this being made into a future movie for sure!

This was very emotional - prepare to feel a LOT when you're reading this! This is a story of survival and recovery, and life after almost-certain death, and I think it was done so well. I loved following Sydney on her journey after her heart transplant, as she struggles with "survivor's guilt" and feeling like she has to honour the donor, while at the same time trying to live her life after not expecting to live past her teens. Sydney is a great main character and you really root for her throughout, and feel everything she's going through. It was a little predictable at times, but overall, such a fantastic read!
✨Some fun facts about my experience with Every Borrowed Beat:✨ -I bought this book on the day it was published -I met the author who wrote this book at a literature festival that same day -she signed the book for me and my sister -I got to hear about her writing process and the inspiration she had for this book
So it was a really interesting and impactful experience to hear from this author in person, and it made the book more enjoyable overall.
✨What it’s about:✨
Every Borrowed Beat follows the story of Sydney, a teenage girl who has spent the past few years of her life on the heart transplant list, with the mindset that she could die at any point. After having a successful transplant, she must learn how to live her life. She feels guilt for being the one who survived while someone else had to die for her to get a heart. She figures out that another young girl named Mia must’ve been the one to donate it to her, and she falls into an obsession with understanding what Mia was like. During this time, she meets Clayton, Mia’s best friend and together they work to complete a vision board that Mia left behind. Sydney starts to have feelings for Clayton, but she hasn’t told him that she’s only alive because Mia is dead. If the truth comes out, what will become of their relationship? And does Clayton have his own secrets? Will Sydney learn to experience the life that has been given to her?
✨My thoughts:✨
I was really intrigued by this premise and thought it was an interesting perspective to focus on what it’s like after being sick and how to fully live again.
During the beginning of this book, I felt like it was leaning towards a 4 star read, because I don’t really enjoy stories that revolve around the main character lying.
But by the second half, the book got much better. It layered so many emotions into the story as well as having an entertaining and important plot line.
I really felt for the characters, each with their own unique personalities and flaws, and how they interacted with one another.
This book tackles difficult topics and situations in a relatable and meaningful way that really sucks you into the experience.
I also appreciated how the author was able to explain certain aspects of what it’s like to be on a transplant list and all the medical parts that are included in an understandable way.
This book didn’t shy away from being sad and having heartfelt moments, that really make you feel involved, and you may even shed a few tears.
The romance was cute and it connected well with the plot, though at times it came across as a little cheesy and slightly rushed.
So really I don’t have many complaints about this book, and I would definitely recommend it.
✨In Conclusion:✨ Every Borrowed Beat is an amazing book with complex characters, emotions and an intriguing plot line with a couple twists and turns. It portrays a memorable and heartfelt story that I would definitely recommend!
1. Have you ever lied to someone about who you really are? Sydney has. Read on to see why and how she handles it when the truth inevitably comes out. 2. Everybody dies, but not everybody lives (or has the chance to). Sydney is using her second chance at life to help finish what someone else lost. 3. If you are fan of YA romances, with a twist, this one might be right up your alley. 4. If you know or have been someone on the end of an organ donation, this story will resonate with you. 5. Ever had a friend that you had never even met in person? So does Sydney!

This book was truly so beautiful - it was full of grief, but also the reminder to live. I'll never be able to do this book justice with a review, because Erin just did such a phenomenal job with this one. Sydney is a teenager who gets a second chance at life when she receives a heart. As she struggles to come to grips with what that means and tries to understand that she lived because someone else died - she attempts to find meaning.
The characters were all written with such a level of depth that truly impressed me. From grieving family members, a destroyed best friend trying to find a purpose to live, to Sydney's best friend as she continues to struggle with life before a transplant, and then Sydney's family - her mom and dad are both really well written and the struggle of letting their daughter change post-transplant is expanded on in a really great way. This is truly a great one, and you might want to have tissues nearby when you read it!

I don't know why I thought I wouldn't SOB with this book when I sobbed with The Words We Keep. Currently uncontrollably crying after finishing Every Borrowed Heart and I'm not sure what to do with myself now that I've finished this book. DID I FINISH THE BOOK OR DID THE BOOK FINISH ME!!!!!
Have the tissues ready because you're going to need them! This is a top read of the year for me and I really don't have any words, my brain is so overwhelmed with emotions. Every Borrowed Beat has some very tough topics throughout the story, and for the MC Sydney to be a teenager having to go through all of it was so tough to read. You don't know what someone else is going through and I'm glad she had the support system that she does.
Chloe, Clayton, and Mia I love you so so much. Sydney, you're such a badass.
When a Sydney, a teenage heart recipient, goes looking for her donor’s family, what could possibly go wrong?
Seventeen-year-old Sydney is a sympathetic, yet frustrating protagonist. She befriends the Clayton, the BFF of her donor by telling him she was friends with Mia, the girl whose heart Sydney decides she has. Sydney engages in typical teenage rebellion, which is problematic because she risks her health by taking her medication late, allowing herself to be around crowds and getting caught in the rain. Though she experienced believing she’d die, she’s immature socially.
Erin Stewart tells wonderful stories about teens experiencing health issues in a way that appeals to younger teen and even MG readers.
consider me ran over by a fright train now😭💕 this was such a gorgeously written book about a heartbreaking story. I live that this book focuses on after because it cannot be easy to just wake up with someone else’s heart, literally🫠 second chance at it’s finest. I think everyone needs to read this book at least once xx
If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that it is not often that I read YA Contemporary Romance. YA Fantasy, yes, but normally not YA Contemporary. That said, I do not regret reading this book one bit. This story is about so much more than a teenage girl coming of age and experiencing teenage drama.
This is a story about life, about living. It’s about surviving heart failure and where to go from there. It’s about loss, heartbreak, survivor’s guilt and falling in love. Erin Stewart handles these complex issues with such care and devotion that it is impossible not to become sucked into the story. Despite these heavy topics, the book itself does not focus too much on the sad parts, although I will admit I teared up a couple of times.
Not only does the story concern itself with huge questions about life and death, but the author presents the story in a beautiful, almost poetic way. Every word is carefully selected to present the story in the best way.
With romance, I usually include some of my favourite quotes, but for this book, I can’t bring myself to do so, because this book needs to be experienced as a whole, without any of the dialogue spoiled beforehand. And every quote needs to be seen in relation to the story to be done justice.
This book also reminded me of the popular book, If I stay by Gayle Forman. So, if you’ve read If I Stay and liked the emotional aspects of that story, I highly recommend checking out Every Borrowed Beat.
4.5 Stars. Seventeen-year-old Sydney Wells was supposed to die, but after years of waiting, she received a heart transplant. After finding the family of her likely-donor Mia, she meets Mia’s best friend, Clayton. As the two grow closer, Sydney knows she must be honest about her connection to Mia.
This was an incredibly well done, inspirational and uplifting YA novel. The author pulled from her own experience as a heart failure survivor to write this story, and also met with heart transplant survivors and doctors. I appreciate the time and research the author put into this book ensure it’s accurate and genuine to the real-life experience, and I love the emphasis on life and living it to the fullest. I think this is a great book for both teens and adults, and I’d definitely recommend it to my students—it’s a great one for book discussions. Perfect for fans of FIVE FEET APART or THE FAULT IN OUR STARS—get your hands on this one ASAP!

When I picked up this book from the library, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. But this story of Sydney and her heart was quite the ride.
The story revolves around Sydney who got a new heart from a donor. Determined to find out who was the donor, she starts a journey that learns her about life and living it.
To be honest, it took some time to get into it. But man, when I did, I devoured it so fast.
I also think people fall in love fast in books. Gotta say the truth came out faster than I expected too. But stories aren’t endless, so I get it, I do. The reconnection between Sydney and Clayton was a beautiful scene that moved me, as well as the last chapter.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to others who are looking for a heartfelt story that flows with every borrowed beat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was SO SO CUTE! I loved everything about this book! It reminded me of the movies of Five Feet Apart & Remember Me. Which are both my favorite movies of all time! This book had all the cutesy ness of any YA romances. And I’m 100 percent happy I checked this out from the library. I love reading because you think you have a favorite book, then you read something new. And then you can add a new book to your favorite stack in your library. And this book is a new favorite for sure! 😍 Plus I love the cover. ❤️
Książka porusza ciężkie tematy choroby i śmierci.
This book was so incredible. I loved it so much, it made me so happy and it was such a joy to read. It was so wholesome❤️ It’s definitely one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. It pulled my heart and the way you fall in love with the characters is just BEAUTIFUL. AMAZING BOOK. I hope this becomes a movie it’s gorgeous.
The MC is a TERRIBLE friend. But is also a teenager who has been given a second chance at life, in the form of a heart transplant. Then she does the psycho thing and tracks down her donor and goes to the death side birthday memorial. lol. It only gets more interesting. Couldn't stop reading.
Picked this book up because of the cover, and was intrigued by the synopsis. But wow did this book blow me away. Laughter, tears it has it all. My favorite of 2025 so far.
dużo o transplantacjach, co na plus, mało faktycznego romansu, co na minus; poza tym dzień po skończeniu tej pozycji nie pamiętam imion głównych bohaterów. niech ten fakt będzie moją recenzją
“Life isn’t measured in the number of beats. It’s measured in love.”
Oh, this was such a beautiful story about life, love, and second chances.
Sydney was such a relatable character, because I just know that I would feel the same way if I was in her shoes. Watching her search and deal with survivor's guilt was so heartbreaking, but I was so proud of her by the end.
And Clayton was so sweet! I liked him a lot, and I'm glad him and Sydney got to grieve together.
For fans of Five Feet Apart and A Thousand Boy Kisses comes a new story about what it’s like to receive a donated organ and get a second chance at life.

Thanks to @prhaudio I was able to listen to this one and I highly suggest not doing that when commuting. The emotions, plot twists and just overall FEELINGS that this book evokes showcases how talented this author is. While a fun rollercoaster of a ride, this book is also very educational in regard to organ donation and the medical system as a whole.
Anyone else remember the movie Searching for David’s Heart? This one reminded me a lot of that, in the best way possible! I highly recommend!
