3.75 out of 5 stars!

A Lady's Lesson in Scandal is a must-read for enthusiasts of historical (spicy) romance, mystery and intrigue. Featuring a captivating storyline, nicely crafted characters, and insightful themes, this novel promises to make a memorable impact. Although it can be enjoyed on its own, starting with the series' first book 'The Secret Life of a Lady' will enhance your experience. I definitely need to dive into that one soon!

Secret femme-fatale in training whose deadly mission is to seduce the one man who despises marriage more than her!?
The way that I'm going feral right now is indescribable.

Dangerously Fun

Millicent Whittenberg was due to announce her engagement to a much older Viscount. Millie had lost the love of her father due to a romantic indiscretion and her stepmother, almost Millie’s age wants her out of their household.

Millie is one of Queen Victoria’s deadly damsels, having worked with the Phillipa, a widowed Duchess not to be trifled with. Millie is determined to avoid marriage, so at the engagement ball in her honor she selects a man who would not wish to marry.

Major General Beaufort Drake swore off women and marriage after coming home from war scarred, only to find his lady love married to his brother who would be next in line for the Dukedom.

Drake works for the Prime Minister and Millie works for the Queen. What could go wrong?

This was another of Darcy McGuire’s Deadly Damsel series, and just as fun as the last one. Mildly spicy tale with a wicked stepmother, dashing heroes, and friends through thick and thin. Fun and mystery are the keywords for this Victorian romance.

If Bridgerton and Mr and Mrs Smith had a baby you would get this book!
Such a brilliant concept! This was a great continuation to the first book. While you could definitely read this as a stand alone, reading in after the first book in the series lets you in on some of the inside jokes and references. I feel like some of the scenes in this book seemed forced or laid out too easy for the reader. My assumption is that the author wanted to keep the book short but I feel like other things could have been cut to give more room for the more important "ah hah" scenes to feel fuller.
I still think this was a great read and I'm hoping the series continues!

What a great read! 👏🏼

This historical romance was exactly what I needed to get over my post-exam slump. This book delivered the perfect blend of intrigue, suspense and excitement!

Millie, the fmc, was honestly one of my favorite fmc’s that I’ve encountered in a book. This book is set in a time where women’s futures were dictated by societal expectations and men, however, Millie defies the norms with her fierce determination, sharp wit and strength. I found her journey throughout the book to be inspiring and empowering 🥹

Equally compelling, is the dynamic between Millie and the mmc, General Drake Beaufort. I loved their witty banter and how they both met their match in one another. Their relationship developed in a natural and captivating way which is what made reading this book even better to read.

This book is a must-read for anyone who is looking for a historical romance with strong, complex characters and a healthy dose of mystery and intrigue.

Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for providing me with an eArc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to love this book because the premise sounded great. Beau and Mille like a victorian mr and mrs smith. But gawd the story was awful. It started with the weird inner dialogue and uber evil stepmother whose whipping causes Millie severe wounds, it progressed to reading conversations Beau has with his D*[k . I should have dnf’d but I skipped ahead so I could read the stepmother get her a22 kicked

Riveting Victorian adventure/romance!

Millicent Whittenburg is a member of a secret group of Queen Victoria’s sleuths led by the formidable Duchess of Dorsett. Millie’s been training with the Duchess, Phillipa Winterbourne, to be a Queen’s investigator. The Queen needs to keep an eye on her House of Lords and certain villainous members.
Unfortunately Millie is being forced into marriage with a repulsive, elderly man, Viscount Tread, a friend of her father’s and “wicked” (truly!) stepmother. (I’m frequently disgusted by Millie’s avarice stepmother Patricia. A nasty piece of work. How did Millie’s beloved father, Marquess Whittenburg, allow Patricia to make so much angst and trouble for Millie? Dreadful woman! Pitiful father!)
Millie’s attending a ball where her betrothal is to be announced.
Her way to escape? Entrap someone into marriage, and then refuse to marry them.
Only Millie didn’t have the measure of her target, Major General Beaufort Drake, Earl of Tetly, a scarred warrior hero, and private investigator for the Prime Minister.
I’m not going to lie, a fiery intimate life develops between the two. It is indeed spicy as the sub title allows.
What happens brings the past and future into collision. A tangled story of love and deceit, of romance and mystery.
An intriguing addition to McGuire’s Deadly Damsels series.

"A Lady's Lesson in Scandal" by Darcy McGuire is an enthralling historical romance and mystery novel that fully deserves a 5-star rating because I couldn’t put it down! Set in the sumptuous backdrop of Regency England, the book expertly weaves together an intricate tale of love, passion, and societal expectations, yet with a strong female protagonist, Millicent. No stranger to scandal, I admired this character, who was willing to break the norms and what’s expected of her for freedom of her own will.

McGuire's storytelling prowess shines through her vivid and multidimensional characters, with the strong-willed Millicent and the charming (in his own way) yet enigmatic Major General Beaufort Drake drawing readers into their world and magnetic chemistry from the very beginning.

The passion between the main characters is electric and extremely spicy. Their journey is a rollercoaster of emotions that will leave readers yearning for more. The attention to historical detail is impeccable, immersing the reader in a world of lavish ballrooms, whispered intrigue, and forbidden romance.

McGuire expertly captures the societal norms and constraints of the era, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative. The plot's pacing is perfect, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they navigate unexpected twists and turns as they both set to solve the same mystery and secret missions.

The prose is elegant and evocative (and even humorous), transporting readers back in time and allowing them to experience the characters' triumphs, tribulations, heartbreak, and sorrows.

In conclusion, "A Lady's Lesson in Scandal" is a must-read for fans of a spicy historical romance. Darcy McGuire has crafted a beautiful love story while maintaining the strength of the female character for the era. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking an enchanting and unforgettable reading experience.

"A Lady's Lesson in Scandal" by Darcy McGuire is an exciting historical romance that mixes love, mystery, and adventure. The story is about Millicent Whittenburg, a brave young woman trying to escape an arranged marriage she doesn't want. She decides to ruin her reputation on purpose by getting close to Major General Beaufort Drake, a tough investigator who doesn’t believe in love or marriage. But her plan takes an unexpected turn, and the two end up in a surprising marriage that leads to a thrilling and emotional journey.

McGuire does a great job creating interesting characters. Millicent is strong and determined, standing up against the rules of her time, while Drake is a complex character with a guarded personality. Their connection feels real and grows naturally as they face exciting and dangerous challenges together. The detailed descriptions of the Victorian era make the story come alive, and the mix of romance and suspense keeps readers hooked. Overall, "A Lady's Lesson in Scandal" is a great choice for fans of historical love stories full of drama and excitement.

I would recommend reading the first book which was delightfully spicy. However, you could jump into this one right away too. This book (and the first one) are already available so secure your copies today!

I was so delighted that a second book in this series is already coming out! The concept of the series is great - women secretly working for Queen Victoria as vigilantes cross paths with men working as secret agents for the Prime Minister. The groups have different ideas about administering justice. The men want to use the proper channels, but because the House of Lords wasn't holding peers accountable for crimes, Queen Victoria's agents step in.

In this second book, things get steamy very quickly. Millie, the main character, wants to publicly "ruin" herself so she's free from societal expectations and can work undercover. Things go wrong and she winds up betrothed to one of the Prime Minister's agents. They are instantly drawn to each other and almost all of the tension in the story is found in the mystery subplot, about human trafficking.

This is not all fluff - there's physical abuse (on page), allusion to sexual abuse by a parent, mention of torture (some of the agents were prisoners of war), and kidnapping/human trafficking.

Millicent Whittenburg has an evil step-mother who blackmails and abuses her. The only way out of her step-mother's marriage plans is to seduce Major General Beaufort Drake. Everyone knows he doesn't want to get married. Unexpectedly, her plan backfires when Drake, against his better judge, is attracted to the lady. Millie has been secretly training with the Duchess of Dorsett as a private investigator working for the queen.
Drake works for the prime minister to bring peers to justice. Both sides are out to destroy The Devil's Sons. Drake and Mille explore their sexual attraction, but will the lack of trust in her work for the queen tear them apart.
Recommend reading this series in order. The cross over of characters play a significant part in each book.
Explicit sex. Some violence.

Ever since her father remarried to her wicked stepmother, Millie’s life has been one hardship after another, the most recent of which is an unwanted betrothal. But she has a plan to escape. One that involves tricking the prickly, stone-hearted Major General Drake into kissing her in order to ruin her reputation, leaving Millie free to escape into the service of Her Majesty’s team of elite spies. Her plan goes sideways when instead of spurning her, Drake makes a marriage offer of his own. Are their feelings real, or just the result of a one-time mistake?

I had a lot of fun getting to know Millie as a main character, and I liked that she was tough but not invincible, and vulnerable but not a damsel in distress. The writing was fast-paced, and had a good balance of dialogue and description, and even though this is the second in a series, it was completely readable as a standalone book. The pacing was generally good, but I felt that the ending was a little too rushed and some of the plot lines did not get satisfying conclusions as a result.

As with the first book, I liked the romance in general but thought that some aspects of it fell a bit flat. Millie and Drake fell head over heels for each other instantly, and in my opinion did not have a lot of depth to follow it up with. I think a little more detail into why they liked each other beyond their physical attraction would have gone a long way. But, if you’re looking for a quick, steamy Victorian romance with a feisty main character, this may be the book for you. Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC. This is my honest review.

3.5/5 It’s refreshing to see a main character who fantasizes about punching people as often as I do.

First, thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for providing an arc of the book. This book was released on October 12, 2024.

A Lady’s Lesson in Scandal delivers a delightful blend of spicy historical romance and thrilling intrigue, continuing the captivating “Deadly Damsels” series. Millicent Whittenburg, a wallflower with a secret life as a Queen’s investigator, seeks to escape an unwanted betrothal by orchestrating her ruin. Her plan hinges on seducing the marriage-averse Major General Beaufort Drake, a scarred warrior and private investigator. However, Millie underestimates Drake’s resolve, and their scandalous encounter leads to an unexpected marriage proposal. The chemistry between Millie and Drake is electric, fueled by witty banter and a shared passion for their covert missions.

Millie’s character shines as a fiercely independent woman defying societal norms. Her determination, wit, and strength make her an inspiring protagonist. General Drake, equally compelling, proves to be a worthy match for Millie, and their relationship develops naturally and authentically. The author effectively weaves in the historical context, showcasing the constraints faced by women in that era while highlighting Millie’s defiance.

The author’s attention to detail, particularly in depicting the characters’ emotional journeys and the intricacies of their covert operations, adds depth to the story. “A Lady’s Lesson in Scandal” is a must-read for fans of spicy historical romance with a touch of intrigue, offering a captivating tale of love, deception, and empowerment.

Rating: 3,80 stars but rounded to 4!

It was described as historical romance with a bit of mistery/detective parts.
Both of the MCs are trying to find out, who is killing some of the young woman. They both have the same goal, just only work for two different 'bosses' - Millie for the Queen, Drake for the Prime Minister.
Millie just wants to work her investigation in peace, not to be a wife. She had a brilliant idea - let herself get ruined by a man, so then no other Lord would like to marry her. Sounds perfect, am I right? Well... It didn't went according to her plan...Now she is forced into just another engagement.

First of all, i didn't know that this book is the second one (ups) but it wasn't hard for me to read, so i don't think it is nessesary to read first one before the second!

I really liked both the General Beaufort Drake and Miss Millie, their banter and their relationship growing. One of my fav tropes is forced proximity so it sounded like the perfect read for me.
It was such a nice read, now i think i will check the first one out to see what did i miss!

4.5 ⭐️

Hardened heart and scarred war hero, Drake refuses to be ensnared by love again. That said, whenever he sees “readheaded Valkyrie” Millicent, he can’t help but become distracted, entranced, and like a boy ready to pull a girl's pigtails. And. I’m. Obsessed. This is one of my favorite kinds of heroes, and it’s the most satisfying when he eventually snaps. And Millie’s is more than meets the eye, as she also has been heartbroken in the past and is hoping for freedom from her repressive stepmom. Millicent, in an effort to escape her ancient betrothed, seduces Drake at a ball with the intention that he’ll be so mad at being duped he won’t offer for her, and she’ll be free from all men. Joke's on her when man does actually offer for her 🤣 The book continues as the two navigate their attraction during their marriage of convenience wedding party and the worst guests ever, all while investigating a nefarious human trafficking ring.

This series is continuing to deliver really intense and dark mysteries I’m hooked on from the jump. With layered characters that all have secrets and trust issues, it’s a wonderful cocktail of tension and intrigue. And despite the serious tone of this series, there are still layers of humor, and our characters' internal monologues range from emotionally poignant to hilarious quips. Drake and Millie were both so perfect for each other, and their growth from untrusting animosity to loving support was tear-jerking. I’m clearly devouring this series because it’s oh so very addicting and hard not to continue after meeting all these characters.

2.5/5

I liked the first half of the book much better than the second half. I enjoyed Millie getting training with Phillipa but then the author chose to drop trauma casually with no warning whatsoever. Main character being whipped by her stepmother? Check. Her best friend being sexually assaulted by her father (which was really a throwaway line?)? Check. Sexual trafficking of young girls? Check. I mean what? Seriously? What the hell, author. There was NOTHING to point in that direction before this scene with Ivy. And I'm just supposed to... What, congratulate you for trauma dumping your readers with no warning? Absolutely not.

It was supposed to be a silly romcom and turned into I don't even know what. And the way the author didn't deal with ANY of that and just brushed it off... Am I supposed to be happy?

So the two members of the Devil something society (?) were caught and killed. Does it stop the group from kidnapping any more young girls? Is queen Victoria informed? Is Prime Minister? What does Beau think about the betrayal of his closest friend? Or the fact that he was killed in self-defence by his bride? Who knows? Certainly not the readers cause the author chose to not reveal any of that. As though it wasn't important.

If it wasn't important then why include it in the book, that's my question. If you're not going to round up the plot and the reader has more questions than answers, then the plot wasn't really all that good in the first place, was it.

I struggle to find any things I liked about this book. The evil stepmother trope is so overdone and here it was just too much, and to see her not suffering any consequences was just frustrating. The other woman being a bitch and not getting her due either was anticlimactic as well. Why include her in the first place if you're not going to do anything about it? There are better ways of making your Maine female character jealous. Better ways.

I'm just frustrated and disappointed by this book. It could use sensitivity readers for sure. I mean so much trauma with no resolution whatsoever? And why would I care about the main characters happy ending if the whole trauma dump just sucked all the enjoyment I had of this book? Seriously.

Thank you, NetGalley, for providing me the ARC.

A Lady's Lesson in Scandal by Darcy McGuire delivers an engaging blend of historical fiction and slow-burn romance, with a refreshing twist—a female secret agent protagonist in a historical setting. As a fan of historical romances, especially with strong, independent female characters, I thoroughly enjoyed this unique approach. The slow-burn romance was well-developed, with an intriguing dynamic between the leads that kept me invested. The fairytale-like presence of the evil stepmother added a classic element to the story, while the love scenes were steamy and satisfying, making for a well-rounded read.

What truly stood out was the protagonist's role as a secret agent, a rare and exciting feature in a historical romance. Darcy McGuire skillfully handled this aspect, making the heroine's strength and independence believable and compelling. This was my first experience with such a storyline, and it brought a fresh energy to the genre. Overall, the book was a lot of fun, and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romances with a twist. A Lady's Lesson in Scandal is available to buy or through Kindle Unlimited.

What I liked about the book – I liked the idea of the main characters working towards the same goal, at first not realizing they were both investigating the same issue then later realizing they are better together than apart. I thought Millie and Beau had good chemistry and I liked that they weren’t your typical hero and heroine—he has some significant scars from his military experience in the Anglo-Afghan war and she is a tall, curvy, tough redhead as opposed to a demure English rose. I liked that they were attracted to the things in one another for which other people found fault.

Some things I struggled with—

I have read a number of historical romances recently where the heroine stages some kind of scandal that would foil any marriage plans thus forcing her to live an ostracized but desired independent life. This theme is a new one for me in historical romance as I was not aware that women had that kind of self-determination during these time periods. Was this a thing during the Victorian or Regency eras? Were society women able to win that kind of independence through scandal? How did they support themselves? If anyone knows or can share some historical resources about this scenario, please share them. I would love to learn more!

Also, were women during the Victorian era kidnapped and sold into prostitution and slavery in France? This issue was also a new one for me. I did some research about prostitution during this era and read that there were thousands (one article said 80,000!) of prostitutes working during the Victorian era, but I did not see anything referencing the kidnapping of English girls and selling them into sex slavery (and by aristocratic men?). I would be interested to learn more about this practice as well, so if you have information on this, please share!

The language in the story is not consistent with your typical historical romance. In many ways, the language made the book feel more contemporary.

Millicent Whittenburg is desperate to get out of becoming betrothed so she decides to put into practice the idea of compromising her honour with a gentleman more of her own choosing. Major General Beaufort Drake, is no pushover but Millicent discovers, to her cost, that Drake, when confronted with Millicent’s suggestion rises to the challenge. He doesn’t, however, as yet, know of Millicent’s involvement as one of the Queen’s investigators.

Those who have read the first book in this Deadly Damsels series will be aware of the foundations of the story and so to have another femme-fatale and one as deadly as Millicent makes this story into a rollicking good romp. Wickedly spicy and with passion burning up the pages both Drake and Millie have met their match which, between them, keeps the passion, and the spice right up at boiling point.

These stories are great fun to read, not to be taken too seriously but at its core there is a sharp message which reminds us of how little choice women in the Victoria era had not just over their own bodies but also their limited sense of freedom and autonomy. The author writes well, with razor sharp wit and more than one caustic put down and with a real sense of the women in the story calling all the shots. It’s also a passionate love story with some truly steamy moments which helps in making Millie and Drake into characters you won’t forget in a hurry.

It’s perfectly possible to read A Lady's Lesson in Scandal as a standalone story but it does make sense to get to know some of the recurring characters as that way you understand what makes them tick. I’m already looking forward to book number three in the Deadly Damsels series.

Darcy McGuire kicks off another tale from her 'Deadly damsels' series, following the proteges of Lady Phillippa, Lady Winterbourne, under the aegis of Queen Victoria, herself - a sort of Queen's Lady, if you please. Think Bridgerton meets Charlies Angels - these sparkling, intelligent unconventional heroines, stifled by rigid patriarchal rules, train in hand to hand combat, weaponry and self defense - and why you ask... Why, all in an attempt to bring justice to the scoundrels' in the House of Lords, who are often let off with by the peerage with slaps on their wrists.

They are often abetted by their counterparts - the dashing heroes, of course, under the Prime Minister, hunting the same villains! How these two factums clash, sizzle and burn forms the basis of the novel. Add in dimensions of equality, crimes against voiceless victims and a brace of adventure, horse riding and a lot of interspersed spicy moments make this a fascinating read.

This book in particular deals with Mellie - our ginger haired, plus size Amazonian or Valkyrie, who captures the heart and soul of wounded war veteran, Beaufort Drake. Both Mellie and Drake have a broken history in love - Mellie's reputation has been sullied due to her infatuation with her childhood friend St George, and is being forced into a marriage with her father's friends, at the insistence of her step mother. While Drake has returned home after years of torture and scarring to find his fiance married to his brother. Add in some human trafficking, beauty and the beast vibes, this makes an excellent read for any Victorian fan, albeit some of the swearing may be more modern, considering the period in question. This gripe aside, this is a fats paced, easy adventure mystery with oodles of spice!

“What I feel for you is forever. It’s my breath. My beating heart. It eclipses every other emotion. If I have a soul, you are the essence that fills it.”

A lady lesson in scandal was a very nice read, spicy and funny, mixing Victorian and modern romance. Millicent and Beau are both endearing, stubborn and strong (I’m not sure about the subtitle “a wallflower at risk of ruin”, maybe is it a reference about book1, that I haven't read yet). They are both too attached to their independence (and to their respective missions), which makes them reject their feelings during the whole story, resulting in a lot of mutual pining. And even if I like that, it sometimes felt a bit too much.
I loved how the mystery plot waved with the love story, as it undoubtedly adds some rhythm to the novel, and –for once– I didn’t see the final twist coming (at least not a long time before it happened).
I loved Millie’s questioning, it made a lot of sense, and if I absolutely ADORED Drake’s grand gesture, I wish her feelings had taken more space in the story.
If I like the modernity of both MC, I like the writing a bit less. It is completely personal, but when I read historical romance, I prefer to be plunged into the area by the writing, and it is not the case here (the writing is absolutely OK, it’s just modern), but the book was truly an easy read, and very fun with that mystery/spy plot. I’ll definitely read the first book in this series (they are stand alone), as much as the next one.

PS: some characters show openly homophobic behaviors (anti-lesbian), be warned if it might trigger you.
