Bible Study: Going to the Source of Spiritual Success

Rate this book
To know God and to fight Satan and our Carnal nature successfully, daily Bible study is a must. Through God's Word we gain knowledge, understanding, correction and reassurance. Jesus asserted that "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." This book gives compelling scriptural evidence that this is an absolute truth. The following extensive sections have been added to this book to further enrich the 1. Questions and answers about Bible study. 2. Foundational Bible Studies.

The book is essentially a short treatise on why it is important to study The Bible, and not just read commentaries or Christian self-help books disguised as ministry. His logical is simple but powerful, and he writes well. The sections on why one must study The Bible really are a call to arms, and make you realize how beneficial Bible study can be for a Christian. He discusses its benefits in our lives, historically what scripture said about reading the inspired books, and what areas it can guide us in.

I enjoyed his frank discussion on all the ways psychotherapists try to scam people and how some tough love from certain Bible passages might be what many people need. However, I wished he made it a little clearer that reading The Bible is not a substitute for talk therapy. He does specify that chemical disorders and real psychological illness needs to be confronted by a professional, but I wished he put more emphasis on it.

What made this book gold however was his listing of relevant Bible passages and then a bibliography of Bible study tools he recommends based on topic. Pretty much anything you could ask for is in these sections. Bibles sorted by topic, the best commentaries, historical discussion, Apologetics, Biblical contradictions, pretty much everything a practicing Theist would need to properly educate themselves, along with links which can quickly get the required material in your hands.

There was a haughty moment or two in the text, which seems to be very normal now with people of the faith, mostly in regard to the statement of "there are no Biblical contradictions upon closer examinations" (not verbatim). I think Christian writers need to be careful with painting everything as black and white, because someone who is curious about the faith might be put off by the attitude.

Despite my reservations the short read does exactly what it set out to do, and does it marvelously. A great reference piece for any Christian.
