This was a Freebie I grabbed Feb. 9th, 2014 from Amazon.
I love witches first and foremost above all others in this genre. I was charmed from the first words, and when you allowed the main character to be an avid reader. I was hooked.
Gagnon; you have an easy flow with your writing that pulled me into the story. I loved loved loved the originality of the bond for these witches. Can’t say anymore in fear to mess it up for another…
I was delighted I picked this book from amongst the many others on my TBR list. I will from this book forward pick books on the bottom of my pile according to the mood I’m in and today as you see I’m in a mood for Witches. :D
Notes for Gagnon;
I believed James was true from the beginning.

Thea finds out that she is from the 1600's and can't believe it. She works for a hard-nose boss who owns the bakery she works in. Finding out about herself doesn't answer the questions that she has about herself. She thinks her friends are crazy at first. As time goes by she learns more about herself. She also learns she has a dangerous enemy who wants Thea. Why?
In this novel, there are unexpected twists and turns. It is a quick read. I was totally involved in the story. I will be reading the next book as soon as I can! It is a great witch story with mystery and a little romance. The novel shows us how she realizes that in her past, she should had been more thoughtful about what she did. Read this great first novel!

Thea doesn’t know she is a witch. She lives in Salem which has become a tourist attraction for vacationers who are groupies of the history of that era. Her friend Delia makes potions for the tourists. Read the book to discover what unfolds allowing Thea to regain her memory. It’s a pretty fast moving book. I’m off to read the sequel. Hope to see you there!

I really wanted to like this one, but I couldn't. The writing isn't really good, and the story feels so rushed & confusing.

(No plot spoilers - just info re: the lead character)
Within the first chapter a lot of things kinda get thrown at you. I like a book that gets into it quickly but by that I mean straight into the character or setting. This chapter just felt too busy for me. I haven't even begun to understand this character or even read anything much about her before she's thrown into a situation where you need to feel some sort of emotion for her. I find it difficult to empathise with a character I don't know at all. Plus one chapter in I've already learned about her boss, hobby and job but don't know her age or how she really looks or acts.
Further into this chapter I do start to learn more about the main character. To me she's needy, overly sensitive and a bit pathetic. She seems too dramatic and weak willed. I'm already finding it difficult to like this characters.
Chapter two is even more busy than the first but with revelations and not quick descriptions of characters. A lot goes on in this one - and quickly. I feel like this could have been drawn out a little bit more and that I've just had half a books worth of information dumped on me.
After forcing myself to pick this book up again I'm relieved that the next few chapters had me hooked and wanting to read on. More revelations and twists but not as difficult to believe now as we're getting into things. I think some of the characters language is off putting though. Especially when they veer into old English which sometimes is so thick I had to re-read a paragraph twice to understand what they were trying to say.
Things start heating up but one thing that has been persistently bugging me from the beginning is the supporting characters reluctance to share information. I understand due to the story they are being vague for a reason but it's every other paragraph where a question is asked and not answered. It doesn't help that the lead is such a pushover she finds any excuse to avoid confronting them about it. Even when she does any betrayal or annoyance is swiftly swept under the rug. It's for the purpose of the story which I understand but as the reader it's incredibly frustrating to be so close to learning about someone or the storyline to then be so quickly and easily pulled away from it. At least give me a good reason to be disappointed.
The reason for the quick dumping of information in the first few chapters becomes apparent as a little way past the halfway mark and it seems like a million things have happened. I felt like it was gearing up for the end to draw to a conclusion but was actually just at only halfway. At first I was a bit disheartened thinking I had loads left to do but as I went on, I relished that there was more time to find out what was going on and learn more about the characters.
As we go on, the main character to me is still just unlikeable. She acts like a petulant child, flies off the handle all the time and when confronted with an explanation - no matter how thin - she instantly melts and forgives. Never stands her ground or berates them for not revealing truths in the first place. Again, this is a fantasy book. If I'd have had half the things placed on me in real life as she did I'm sure I'd be a nervous wreck too. So i tried to look past this and keep reading. My advice to anyone reading or planning to read this book to do the same. She is not a strong lead. Yet.
It wasn't all annoying characters or sometimes difficult language though. I think the concept is brilliant. I haven't seen too many - if any, thinking about it - supernaturally witchey stories out there. Some of their quirks, historical background and powers are much more than a simple witch with a wand, they're more thought out and incredibly imaginative. The spells, the potions, the magical things they can do to each other and how. It's very well thought out in that respect.
By the end I'm stuck into the storyline and I know exactly what cliffhanger is coming up, leaving it open for the second book. Bravo. Because man, does it have me ready to read the next one. The characters are beginning to be more like-able and I'm even beginning to sympathise with the lead. As you go through the book you realise why she seemed so sad in the start and - without giving too much away - I believe the reason was to create a stark contrast with how she is in the end.
Halfway through this book I was sure to give it 3 stars but now it's definitely a good 4. I have a feeling this series is going to get better as it continues so I'll be keeping my eyes on it. I've already found the next book on iBooks and brought it. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a good read. Something to concentrate on and get their teeth into.

Witch: A New Beginning (The Witch Series 1)

This book it’s about a girl named Thea. She works at a Bakery and loves to read. She shortly finds out that she is a witch from the sixteenth century, whose memory has been erased in order to protect her. She learns that her best friend Delia who she thought was a fake witch was actually a real witch like her all though with much less powers than her. Along the way she discovers more friends that are protecting her and an enemy who has swear to torture and kill her.
I gave this book 4 stars because even though the lead character annoyed me, for being so needy at times and wayyyyyyy too much of a cry baby, I still really enjoyed it. You could see while reading this book that it was well thought of. The world, the history, the potions and the enchantments were perfectly made. I normally don’t like to read the “enchantments” or “incantations” of a book, but whit this one it was really hard not to. I found myself wanting to read more of them. They were so well written in a cute and beautiful way that made it hard for me to skip them. I really did enjoy this book. It was really addictive, I couldn't put it down. People should be aware that when they read this book they will actually enter it.

A couple of things I would like to discuss;
I hate that she doesn’t press too much!
Every time she is confused or learns something that hurts her or feels betrayed she flips over like the world is ending but then they give her a quick vague answer and she drops it and acts like the person doesn’t really need to explain anything it’s so annoying. I get the whole thing about not been able to give her much, but it’s annoying how when she ask a question without an answer she drops it so fast like it doesn’t matter or like she doesn’t really care for it. I did enjoy the plot. But their love story, OMG! It felt so fake and force at times. Or maybe I saw it that way because I still don't trust James.
I did enjoy the boys. Fish gave the exact amount of laughter to this book and his character was hilarious. I actually found myself laughing out loud at times. Another thing is, when she gets back her memories, I was hoping that the good Thea (the lead character was presented like to personalities the one of the lost memories and the current one who cries too much) will take more control or at least feel more present since she was the one who did the whole growing and was more caring. But no! That was not how it felt. When the “old Thea” takes over it’s literally that, she takes over and the Thea that you have grown to love (aside from being a pushover and the whole crying thing) is completely lost. She even starts to talk like the “old Thea” I absolutely didn’t like that. The “cliffhanger” at the end actually made me cry, and I truly wasn’t expecting it at first. But OMG! It made me hate James, and well I don’t trust him even more. But I think I know now why her dad William took so much memories out of James, and I figure that the only way that he got James to drink the tea was in the hopes that he could break the bond that he has with Thea.
In the end it was really enjoyable, it left me wanting more. Can't wait for the next one.

Thea is the daughter of a pure witch and a wizard, giving her extraordinary magical powers-stronger than any ordinary witch or warlock. Thea’s father, William, originally came from a different world, but he chose to stay in this world when he fell in love with Thea’s mother.
William shared the knowledge of his world and many powerful magic spells with his friend, Simon. Unfortunately, Simon began to covet everything that William possessed, including his power and his other-worldly home. If he couldn’t get what he wanted from William, then he would use Thea.
At the moment when Thea puts her memories, the bulk of her magical powers, and a hidden entity into a crystal and hides it, none of her friends understand why. They just know that they must keep her safe until signs indicate otherwise. Thea’s memories and powers are reawakening 400 years later. Simon has been impatiently biding his time while Thea’s allies have been preparing for a fight with him.
In an attempt to get close to Thea, Simon puts a spell on James, his son, to fall in love with Thea. In the meantime, Simon has gained possession of the crystal, but he doesn’t know how to open it. Simon has an army of warlocks ready to find Thea and torture her for the information that he needs. Little does he know that the real love that has evolved between Thea and James has deemed the spell on James to be powerless.

I love stories about witches so I was definitely looking forward to this one. I started feeling as though I was reading a supernatural chick lit piece but quickly came to realize that this is more along the lines of a supernatural Bourne Identity.
Thea lives in modern Salem working at a local bakery and dealing with the fact that she is an overweight girl with her only consolation being her books and Salem itself. Her best friend Delia calls herself a witch and mixes potions for the tourists. Life is not that bad. Then one day the man of her dreams walks into her bakery and life will never be the same.
OK. Stop right there. This is where the story really begins.
Turns out Delia is a witch and so is Thea. A witch so powerful that the warlocks have been trying to hunt her down for hundreds of years in order to steal her power and finally destroy her. Salem has been witness to this power struggle since the beginning and it is finally culminating in a showdown where treachery and betrayal are revealed, not in black and white but in the flames of fire that sear the souls of those involved. There is a reason Thea locked half her power away in a crystal that left her and her friends vulnerable and now that the time has come to reveal the truth, her inner witch may not be able to handle it.
Out of this dark brew blooms a story of a witch who is only to human and a man who will destroy everything to get the one thing that he has clung to for centuries. At stake are the lives and loves of all those caught in between and time is running out for all.
First book in the series and well worth the read late into the night. But be warned, the final chapter will leave you on at a cliffhanger that you may not be able to wait until the next book for. Go grab this read!

I really wanted to like this more than I did. I can understand Thea wanting to forget her memories and hide herself but I cannot believe anyone would let herself be made so weak and pathetic. She’s afraid of her own shadow, insecure, needy, and whiney; she’s her own worst enemy. After discovering she was a witch you would have thought thinks would be a little better, but no. Then I kept thought when she got her memories back it would have happen and for a few pages it did, but then she’s back to feeling sorry for herself and hiding in the garden to cry. If she is half wizard, why is she not asking William to let her help him so it can be done quicker? She should be furious that she had had to hide for over 400 years with her friends having to change there appearances and most of them hiding themselves so that those hunting her would not realize who she was. There’s also the fact that she’s been away from the man that she is supposedly bonded to also and their struggle is still not over. She should be planning how to find her enemies and destroy them to protect everyone she supposedly cares about; not hiding feeling sorry for herself and crying.
The series could have been redeemed, but from the reviews I’ve seen it wasn’t and it was dragged out into a tetralogy. Also, this is supposedly a YA novel and while there was not a lot of sex, there was a lot of intense longing before the inevitable sex scene so I think it should at least have a warning for parents that monitor what their younger teens read,(if any still do).

As a witch, my life has always had just a touch of the paranormal about. That is one of the many reasons why I have always enjoyed paranormal and witchy tales. I picked up WITCH: A NEW BEGINNING with understandable high hopes. The blurb that I read was interesting and it is the season for tales set in Salem.
Thea is a quiet, shy girl who works at a bakery and lives in her books. Her life gets interesting when one of her favorite authors happens to wander into her bakery and orders some pastries. Try as hard as I could I wasn't able to like Thea. I think that part of that is the fact that she starts off by really not liking herself. If it wasn't for her friend Delia, I would have become bored rather quickly.
I think that the concept of this book to be interesting but it didn't quite live up to its promise. I almost felt as though I needed a score card to keep track of the different characters because they all had a sameness about them. The pacing was also off where it seems as though the characters were racing along just to drop back to a snail's pace abruptly.
As you can probably tell, I am not going to be able to recommend WITCH: A NEW BEGINNING to my readers. I do think that this author has talent but it needs some seasoning. I will keep my eyes out for future releases.

I got this book as a free read on Amazon. I'm speechless. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. The plot was so well crafted; the characters well developed. Sure, at times I wanted to slap Thea out of her whiny, cry baby state, but that was part of the magic of this book. And James .... what can I say? At first I didn't think that they were a good match because Thea had such a low opinion of herself, but as the story developed I could see their bond. I am sure that the author put a spell on this book because once you start reading you won't be able to put it down. And if you do, you'll think about it until you pick it up again. I can't wait to get a hold of the second book in the trilogy.

Wow - what a book! It has mystery, humour, romance and danger all rolled up into one book.
It tells the story of a girl who thinks she's something but it's revealed that she's a witch as the story progresses. The spells were written in rhyme, which I think is quite unique. The romance was a huge part of this story, which I loved! There is an evil force In this story, who wants to bring disaster to the lives of the main characters of this book. He doesn't care about hurting anyone. There is a cliffhanger ending however as it's the first book in what I think is a trilogy. This is not a HEA book. There are twists and turns that you won't see coming until you read them also.

I love a good paranormal story, throw in witches and magic and I am usually hooked.
This story however, just couldn't hook me...the main character Thea, just didn't resonate with me. I hated that she dislikes that she's fat and has no self confidence, and then she finds out she's another person entirely and her self esteem is fine. I found the whole situation very unrealistic.
In addition, I found the story lacking in development, the character list overwhelming, and missing the depth of description.

This is the first in the series and I adore this writer. She transports you to another world. You feel as if you are living Thea's life, the main character. The twists and turns are fabulous and she always keeps you wanting more. I can't wait till the 4th book. These are the books you can't seem to put down.

This book was amazing .. It starts off with lots of information to process. The story keeps you reading . full of action , adventure , suspense , romance and history with a completely believable protagonist. . I've read many many books about witches this one is certainly a page turner!

This is the ONLY witch book I have read beginning, middle and end. I fricken loved it. I can see why people may dislike this series, the MC is a bit of a handful but I didn't care. I was invested in every inch of this book.

Intruiging
I read almost 200 books per annum and I must say I was pleasantly surprised with its originality. Even more wonderful is, it did not get boring anywhere, nor lose my interest. I read it in a day! Kudos to this L.S. Gagnon. I hope the next is just as intriguing!

Good story
Good start to a series, well written. Will continue reading the series. Interesting twists and turns. I would recommend as a good and quick read.
