“whether I fall in love with you or not, whether you’re a boy or girl, or even an elementary school kid or a grandpa, I bet I’d still find myself thinking - I really like this person”

UGHHHHH my heart is soooo consumed by this series…. I put it off for so long because I heard once the main characters get together they breakup. I didn’t want to invest myself in a series where I knew they wouldn’t end up together. But if you’re in the same boat as me - let me tELL YOU - this is one of my top decisions I’ve made. I’m so glad I didn’t just give up. I’ve read a looooot of romance/shojo mangas, and this one is SO different. Romance is definitely more of the subplot, the MF is so refreshing because her whole life doesn’t resolve around forcing them to be together. Her goals and ambitions are so inspirational, and honestly what draws everyone to her.

Now the ML, Shima, is one of the sweetest yet most complex characters I’ve read. Him and the female lead are so incredibly wholesome and their friendship is so pure. It warms my heart, I can literally feel it BLUSHING everytime they’re interacting. I’ve never seen such a pure friendship between a male & female like this one. And I never thought I’d say this - but I was soooo upset when they got together. He clearly wasn’t ready, he only offered since his only way of feeling loved is by being a people pleaser. I super relate to this myself, I am still trying to fight this off to this day. Watching him grow and slowly deal with his trauma really makes me root for him as a person. They broke up in such a bittersweet way and I never saw myself feeling relieved. The series is not over, so I am really looking forward to seeing his growth.

As you can see, I really need someone to talk to about this series but for now this’ll do😂 this friendship is leaving an imprint on my heart and I could talk about it forever. But for now this is it!

100% recommended.

Apart from being absolutely perfect and unique and refreshing, what I absolutely loved was the fact that friendships and familial relationships were never pushed to the back burner in order to make more time for unnecessary romantic tension or played-out cliches.

This series contains an often unexplored side of high school, focusing on the ambitions of the characters and the "ordinary" problems they face every day while incorporating well-loved tropes in new ways.

All in all, Skip and Loafer manages to be equal parts wholesome fluff while also delicately addressing important teenage and societal issues, all while remaining light-hearted and engaging.

the emotional realization is literally amazing. they are so mature, so honest and this is literally a diamond of a shoujo. like please if you ever wanna read manga pleaseeee read skip and loafer!!!

anyways, so yea. the couple thing didnt last but it was necessary and i love the emotional shedding, the honesty and the vulnerability: how shima realized how he can hurt, how he doesn't know himself like he thought he did, how mitsumi was blessed and others, like shima, were not, highlighting her blind spots too - i mean the line "you must have received plenty of love to be able to not care about how others see you" is soooo important and so kindly delivered (and well-received. solid character moment to not so much to make mitsumi floppy and apologetic but definitely shook) - how people never truly do things against you but against themselves (as seen with ujiie). skip and loafer just does a great job with nuance, especially for teenagers oh my lorddd. like for the first time we really see their difference clash against each other, shima and mitsumi, and it questions them both and will eventually grow alot from this experience. shima from his trauma in performing for others at almost all times and its bleed in dating and emotinal immaturity. i mean it was a great volume for character development, plot and nuance. god i love this series.

there's the addition of this girlie girl who is very flawed and perhaps very manipulative (i'm sorry i didn't catch her name, i thought she was going to be background) but is very insightful to mitsumi and reveals mitsumi's bias/blind spot. in fact, she's the one who tells her "you must have received plenty of love to be able to not care about how others see you". very interesting how she's going to fit in the story and into the group if that's in the cards but i hope reproach how she was introduced and her being the one to tell mitsumi off. i feel like in that volume alone, she did the untangling for her and acted as our conduit for mitsumi rather than mitsumi being the one who did the deduction by herself. to me it felt a bit wonky, a bit cheap but it was an amazing line, i will overlook it.

and shima's trauma bleeds into his dating and emotion and i want to write it down so i have somewhere to remember myself bcs it's rather complex for a manga (a great plus): for shima, dating feels like a role to play. he's a status symbol, a trophy boyfriend, not a guy dating a girl he likes. he's routinely used and he knows it... just like his mom taught him unfortunately. he has separated emotions from himself (in order to not be hurt anymore, like an actor would), and in turn emotions from dating. he's used for his friends to get girls, used as an attraction for events, used as 'win' for the girls as they date the most popular guy in school. and this attitude, this role, he adopted it subconsciously - always smiling and in a good mood, he agrees without hesitation for good image (even if it hurts other people, like mitsumi immediately voiced) bcs, as he was taught, he think he's worthless without this role. so yes he was a bit of asshole to ask her out though he wasn't even sure of his feelings (though he knows he likes her) , it was to fulfill the role/the step he thought he was to do.

and i think that's why shima says he really really likes mitsumi bcs she's not for any of that. in fact, they dont know it yet but that's why it wasn't working. mitsumi is here for shima and not the role shima plays. mitsumi would still love him if he dropped the "everyone's boyfriend" act or wtv he could be, she'd still like him. on shima's side, he's relieved and grows in love (without knowing or being able to identify it) for mitsumi when they break up. bcs in someway, this first break up was graceful and somewhere, very validating for him as there was no friendship lost. the fact that they come from genuine places for each other is why they broke up and is also why they will inevitably come back to each other. they are suuuchhh a match like omg.

like girlies take note, that's how to do trauma and emotional obstacles in romance!!!!!

i love the growth. the maturity, the honesty. the character building. this is so earnest and yet it never feels as if they are older than they are. i think it's plain to see that one of the main themes of this manga is how hard it is to fit in and belong; but still deserving of a group that loves you and simply accept you. and this romance fits into this so well into it alll and i can't wait for skip and loafer vol 9. like this is such a gem. like even for ujiie as a possible rival to shima, who is just as complex as everyone else. it's such refreshing to explore these archetypes of shoujo manga being dissected and humanized and truly understood

skip and loafer is literally such an amazing shoujo manga, it truly like sets the standard.

Gosh. Dating really is a hornet’s nest, isn’t it?

In which the springtime of youth turns to the autumn of abject disappointment really quickly and, for once, the reason why makes absolutely perfect sense. But doesn’t sting any less.

If this isn’t the most realistic manga about high school, I feel like it’s pretty close (okay, fine, there’s probably less sex here). There is a rawness to it and a universality to the characters that reflects the real world in some fascinating ways and the genuine struggle that comes from figuring yourself out.

The brilliant idea for Mitsumi and Sousuke to date might seem like the culmination of everything this story has been building towards (and the anime OP I still have stuck in my head), but… is it really?

Mitsumi’s got her eyes on a big prize and she always has - her political ambitions have not changed. And despite some movement, Sousuke still has a lot of self-loathing that he hasn’t worked through. Mitsumi likes Sousuke a whole lot, enough to agree to try and make things work, but it takes two to tango…

When Sousuke starts to worry that he isn’t happy dating Mitsumi, it absolutely feels like somebody who not only doesn’t feel worth that happiness, but also doesn’t like themselves anywhere near enough to like anybody else. And he recognizes himself at times, but not enough to get at how he really feels.

Which leads to Sousuke driving his friend Chris up the wall a couple of times and Mitsumi going her own way. Enough so that this relationship doesn’t make it out of the volume in one piece. And it’s probably for the best that it doesn’t, after Sousuke absolutely drops the ball thanks to his ‘don’t make waves’ attitude.

There’s just so much done with why these people act like they do and it shows in how good the characters are. Sousuke was pushed, hard, into acting by his mother, who quickly loses any sympathy I had for her during a flashback this volume.

From her unrelenting attitude comes his own - that he basically won’t do anything to upset anybody anymore, but that makes him incredibly superficial and he feels like his looks are the only thing he has. It’s left him a complete and utter mess that causes a lot more trouble than he actually realizes.

Elsewhere, boy do I ever love the character of Yasaka, who is a huge flirt and maybe more, but maybe not and that’s just how she is. Either way, it’s caused her to come into conflict with all the girls who aren’t Mitsumi. I absolutely knew this girl in high school and seeing that some things never change was kind of neat for my old bones.

Between that and the student election leading to even more problems for Mitsumi, as her opponent learns a lesson that maybe your superior attitude is actually the problem if you think everybody is beneath you, it’s a packed volume with such brilliant character work.

Don’t worry - everything you love about the series continues and it’s absolutely thoughtful and nuanced. There’s a lot going on and it has all the time to breathe and make the audience cringe along with it.

Every time somebody does something, we get enough background to know why they’ve done it. There’s no generic ‘bad boy’ or ‘good girl’ types here - they all have grown to that archetype for reasons of their own and they all exist in that space or exceed it based on their own actions. It is some of the finest writing in the manga space.

5 stars - my favourite manga spot is held by Frieren, the second spot is Apothecary Diaries, and the third spot belongs to this brilliant and warm story with its great characters and extensive depth. Fabulous and timeless.

What I forgot when I started this volume was the essence of the title. That it is a chill series and there's really no room left for stress and panic. I put this one on hold for a year thinking I'd be so disappointed with Sousuke and will end up being pissed at him for the entirety of the volume. I stressed about it. I held grudge for Sousuke for a whole year and I just refused to read the following chapters after #42 thinking this series is going to break me and I'll hate him for life because I wasn't here to be sad. I don't want my assumptions to be real when I finally tear through pages. Well, yea, that was me panicking last year. And today, considering I'm using a kindle tab now for better viewing, I'm picking tamed and kinda tamed series to read, for fear of people beside me snooping around when I have bigger screen (same problem every fujoshi has, I think haha!) and this is the series that came to mind. Now that I'm actually here, I felt dumb for panicking and not finishing this volume sooner.

Never had Misaki sensei ever disappointed the reader spirit in me. NEVER. I forgot that. There is always angst, and there is always healthy friendships that would make you smile from ear to ear. I feel dumber for getting mad at Sousuke too. Anyway, pretty chill here, but I cried (not stress related, but in a freeing kind of way.) I just love everything about this volume. Although, I'm feeling wary about Cherry-chan...

+1 Still pushing the Yuzu and Mako ship!!

I'm really loving this manga series. I love how much this series focuses on romance and self-growth vs. just a straightforward romance. I hope they adapt this series further because I'd love to see some of these scenes animated.

Siempre hay un momento en cada tomo que te hace reflexionar sobre alguna cuestión de la vida, y eso me encanta 🤍✨🎀

Vol. 1 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 2 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 3 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 4 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 5 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 6 ★★★★☆
Vol. 7 ★★★★☆

How the story progresses makes sense: Shima has too much baggage he has to work out first. However, it's still unsatisfying. Even though he's been struggling with those feelings for a couple of volumes, he hasn't really grown since. While genuine change does take time, it just feels like Takamatsu is struggling with his arc. Here's to hoping Vol. 9 will be better.

HOW?! HoW?!¡ THE AUDACITY OF THIS AUTHOR
TO BE THIS PERFECT

The utter maturity in each character's decisions and the naturalness of their growth is just unparalleled to any other romance/slice-of-life I've ever read. Even when they're not mature, the author makes you understand where that came from with such perfect elegance and you're just begging that you had picked up this series earlier in life because you know you could've forgiven so many people and loved so many more.

i think it’s so silly that a little comic book about high schoolers contains some of the most complex, dynamic characters, and a 600+ page highly anticipated fantasy had flat characters. i would give the world to mitsumi and sousuke fr😭😭

“the elements that shaped you don’t disappear the second you think, ‘i want change.’ i don’t have any ideals i’d risk ostracization or shunning to uphold, either. i’m just drifting along.”
