About the author

Antoni Lange (born 1861 or 1863) was a Polish poet of Jewish descent. He was a philosopher, polyglot (15 languages), writer, novelist, science-writer, reporter and translator. A representative of Polish Parnassianism and symbolism, he is also regarded as belonging to the Decadent movement. He was an expert on Romanticism, French literature and a popularizer of culture of Eastern cultures. He is famous for his novel "Miranda".
He was the first to translate Edgar Allana Poe and Charles Baudelaire into Polish.

He translated English, French, Hungarian, Italian, Spanish, Indian, American, Serbian, Egyptian and Oriental writers into Polish and Polish poets into French and English. He was also one of the most original poets of the Young Poland movement. His work is often compared to Stéphane Mallarmé and Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle.

He was the uncle of the poet Bolesław Leśmian.

Zdecydowanie to jedna z najlepszych polskich powieści, jakie dotychczas czytałem. Sporo tu rozważań filozoficznych, nawiązań do myśli politycznej, okultyzmu i religii wschodu. Powieść tę można interpretować na wielu różnych płaszczyznach, chociażby w odniesieniu natury ludzkiej, stosunku do transcendencji, odwiecznego sporu „nature vs. nurture”, czy też sytuacji odrodzonej Rzeczypospolitej. Niestety miałem okazję przeczytać jedynie niepełne, w stosunku do oryginału, wydanie z 1984 roku.

Sięgnęłam po lekturę, ponieważ jest mi potrzebna do pracy magisterskiej, ale naprawdę nie rozumiem, czemu nie jest znana wśród miłośników fantastyki. Niezwykle ciekawa… właśnie, utopia czy antyutopia?

Dosyć monotonnie napisana, ale interesująca treściowo. Ciekawa idea ludzi odcieleśnionych oraz przedstawienie idealnego świata. Myślę, że warto przeczytać.
