I’m glad that Gen can stay Karasumori!! I’m sure Gen, Yoshimori and Tokine can be a good team. Gen is afraid of injuring someone, but he might save his power owing to stay with Yoshimori and Tokine. I hope that.

Kekkaishi, Vol. 8 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (66–75) of the on-going manga series.

The Shadow Organization has forbidden Gen Shishio and his kind (half-ayakashi) to transform completely into an ayakashi. However, during a clash with assassins from the Kokubōrō Clan, Gen loses his temper and nearly undergoes a total transformation.

With his near-transfiguration, Gen fears that the Shadow Organization will punish him for his transgression. The possibility that his tour of duty at the Karasumori Site might be terminated deeply distresses him. However, Masamori Sumimura, Yoshimori's big brother and leader of the Night Troops, rallies behind him and permits him to continue fighting by the side of his younger brother, Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Yellow Tanabe. The tankōbon continues the story between the Karasumori Guardians and Kokubōrō Clan. It explores the back story and restrictions that Gen Shishio has to deal with as a half-ayakashi.

All in all, Kekkaishi, Vol. 8 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

Kekkaishi (結界師, "Barrier Master") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yellow Tanabe. It was serialized in Shogakukan's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday from October 2003 to April 2011, with its chapters collected in 35 tankōbon volumes. The series is about Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura, heirs to rival families of kekkai (barrier magic) users, who must defend their school from the spirits drawn to the sacred land upon which it is built.

Watchtower- a mysterious cabal of hideous ayakashi demons, to defend Yoshimori's ancestral lands! But the three friends are badly outnumbered, and when Gen's fury causes him to go too far, they may lose him forever-in more ways than one...

Gore: No
Magic: Yes (they have barrier making powers, I think they call it manipulating space and dimensions, something like that, I don't remember, but I consider it to be magic)

Romance: (This one's kind of hard to say) So far, there isn't much romance, although it's obvious that Yoshimori likes Tokine, and I think she likes him that way too.
Action: 4 stars
Pacing: 4 stars
Plot: 5 stars
Drawings/Art: 4 stars

Warning, Spoilers

This volume starts with where the last one ended, Tokine has an idea on way they might be able to escape the barrier, but it doesn't work out, so then they try Yoshimori's idea and it works. Even though it seems like they Kekkaisi are in over their heads, then hold up surprisingly well.

The battle ends with only Kaguro (the guy who is wearing the same human skin as the pawn from volume 6) left from the other side, and Gen almost transformed fully into a demon. Then a man from the Shadow Organization named Hiba shows up and restrains him, and he reverts back to being human. Hiba's one of the people who never liked Gen and still doesn't, he tells Yoshimori and Tokine that Gen's going to get expelled, Yoshimori and Tokine don't want that to happened, so Yoshimori tries call his brother (which is not something he would normally do) but his brother doesn't pick up.

This leads to Gens past, about how and when he joined the Night Troops.
Gen lived with his family (three older brothers, one older sister, and his parents). For years, Gen tolerated his brothers bullying him, physical bullying like hitting and stuff didn't hurt him, but the emotional kind sure did. Whenever people hurt him, his ayakashi nature would come out, although he wouldn't remember most of it. Gen didn't mean to hurt people, but he couldn't control himself. The only one who should him love and that she cares about him was his big sister, although one day he completely lost control and while his sister was trying to bring him back home, he almost killed her, he also sent his brothers to the hospital before that. Masamori showed up, restrained Gen, and he was sent to the Shadow Organization (a place for anyone with unusual powers, mostly half ayakashis). Masamori believed in him when no one else would. I understand why Gen worships Masamori now.

Then we see more of Masamori's character when he goes to a meeting with Ichiro Ogi, who is also a member of the Shadow Organization's executive committee. Masamori's ambitious to make changes to the organization, but first he needs to be in the position of authority to do so. I knew that he wasn't bad, but I'm still wondering why he's doing all this, what does he hope to accomplish?

This volume ends with Gen, Yoshimori, and Tokine finding out that Gen can stay. Yoshi and Tokine are so happy.

Can't wait to read the next one and so on.

After I finish a few volumes, I watch some of those anime episodes (not all of them, just some of my faves) just to see how those scenes look and any manga is always more funnier when it's animated, especially Kodocha.

Overall, I like this manga more and more. I'm getting really curious about the area Karasumori (I know I say that sentence in every Kekkaishi review, but I'm even more curious now). Oh well, I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm not sure if I should review every book I read in this series or just some of them yet, I keep thinking that maybe I should review just some of the volumes. I think that's what I'll do.

This volume has it all. Action, anger, sadness, and moments that make you go "aww..." It starts off right where volume 7 ended. Tokina and Yoshimori are in the middle of an epic battle with demons wearing human skins. Gen is injured and being held hostage by the demons. The kids are definitely in over their heads, but they hold up surprisingly well.

While Tokine and Yoshimori fight, Gen tries to summon his strength. He is half ayakashi (demon) and can bring out his demon nature by force of will. But that is strictly forbidden and he is caught by a member of the Shadow Organization. Even in the middle of a battle, Gen isn't allowed to turn himself into an ayakashi.

This leads us to Gen's backstory. It's a critical part of the series, I think, because it illustrates the characters of Gen as well as Masamori (Yoshimori's brother). I am now fond of both people. Gen lived a quiet life with his family - his sister and brothers. For years, Gen bore the brunt of his brothers' bullying, but when his ayakashi nature developed, Gen lashed out. Gen didn't want or mean to hurt people, but he couldn't control himself. Eventually, he nearly killed his beloved sister. He was sent away to the Shadow Organization - a unique home for wayward boys. There, Masamori took him under his wing, believing in him when no one else would. I understand why Gen worships Masamori now.

The volume closes with some interesting moments illustrating Masamori's intelligence and keen political sense. As the newest member of the Shadow Organization's executive committee, he is ambitious to make changes to the group, but is first positioning himself to have the power and authority to do so. Then we get to see a cute seen building Tokine, Yoshimori, and Gen's friendship/partnership. I'm excited to see what the trio will be up to next.

Yeah, this series just plain rocks. So far, I recommend it to everyone else who really liked the first arc of Bleach and then got disenchanted with it.

Things are heating up, as they are wont to: Yoshimori has a hairbrained scheme to permanently seal off the Karasumori site, his older brother has hairbrained schemes of his own, the Shadow Organization may be compromised, and a mysterious confederacy of powerful demons is... well, doing what they do, really. (And until they transform, they look like total Men in Black. Classy!)

Oh, and the two junior Kekkaishi have a new ally. Have I ever mentioned how much I love that archetype of the surly loner beast-man, who craves connection with his fellow man but is held back by fear of his inner monster? 'Cause I totally do. Werewolf boys and girls, you are all right by me.

As this series goes on, it just gets better and better. Volume 8 sees the Kekkaishi going up against the four human skin-clad ayakashi from the previous book. They manage to kill two before the leader kills the other two and then escapes. Gen was unconscious, but wakes up and loses his temper, and then almost completely transforms into an ayakashi (and Night Troop members are forbidden to fully change). He is found by one of the higher ranked Night Troop members who threatens to tell the chief (Yoshimori's older brother Masamori)about what he's done. However Yoshimori begs his brother to keep Gen with the kekkaishi and the chief decides to keep him where he is. The other important thing we learn in this volume is more about Gen's backstory and how he ended up working with the Night Troops.

I really saved up on reading these next volumes, because I had peeked ahead in scanlation but now I finally got around to reading them in sequence and they're a hell of a first big arc ride into Karasumori and the Schattenorgan (I'm not going to bother translating the German titles - if you read it in English you'll know what I mean anyway, if not, then the German names make sense).

Actually I think it all makes more sense if you read the whole arc up to the climax, otherwise you'll lose too much impetus in between volumes, hmm.

This sets up a real friendship (at least from their side) of Tokkine, Yoshimori and Gen - but it also dives into the tragedy that Gen's life has been until Masamori took him into the Nachtdienst (and even there not everyone accepted him).

It's really heartbreaking if you cry at tragic situations that no one is at fault for.

I bumped up the stars from three and four for this volume because the action, plotting and character development are so good. I don't think I've enjoyed a shonen series this much since in a long time. The battle between the Kekkaishi and the Dark Watchtower ayakashi was wonderfully paced and artistically executed. And still gotta love older brother Masamori who could be up to anything in the Shadow Organization. Favorite illustration: Yoshimori jumping in front of Tokine to save her life.

So we learn more about Gen's past, and see big brother, Masamori, working 'behind the scenes.' I like Gen a little better now, and an more confident that Masamori has bigger plans than a simple power grab...
