You can only win someone’s heart once you’ve captured it.
Nineteen year old Ryder Harrison grew up near a small town in Montana, working on the family’s ranch and in love with his best friend, Landon Pennington. That was until his Grandfather decided he needed to go to college in California. Ryder promised his Mom before she died that he would finish his education. Staying true to his word, Ryder packs his clothes, and heads to California, confident that it would all be one big disaster. The only thing he hadn’t planned on was meeting Bentley Carter.
Twenty year old Bentley Carter has enough emotional issues to write his own ‘How to Cope’ manual. Surviving an abusive childhood, he made a personal promise to always stay true to himself, and never let emotions overrule his common sense. Content with his current life and friend with ‘benefits’, Ben is determined to not let his new roommate affect him.
Uncertain about their places in the world, and with each other, Ryder and Ben struggle to understand the person who is not what they thought they wanted, yet who they are unable to live without. Living in a sometimes cruel and unforgiving world they are determined to embrace the reality of falling in love and the challenges that follow.
Kasey lives in Florida with her children and their many pets. When she's not working on her novels, she can be found playing with her girls, watching NASCAR with her mom, or crocheting.
What did I just read? This is by far one the zaniest contemporary romances I've ever read.
I'm not even sure where to start....
First let me say there were parts of this book that I loved. They are what drove me to keep reading. Every time I wanted to give up another good chapter would keep me from doing so. The bones of this story are good. Really good. The execution, not so much.
This read like a daytime soap opera in more ways than one. A daytime soap opera never ends and that's the way this book felt. It seemed to go on and on and on. Amazon says 169 pages. It felt like 369. I feel a good content editor would have helped tighten this up quite a bit. There was too many unnecessary details and conversations and scenes that did nothing to enhance the story and at times really detracted from it.
This also needed a line editor. Sentences like this really pulled me out of a story I was already struggling to finish: "It had been awhile since we had sex and once the close were gone...." Ummm, yeah. I started highlighting spelling and grammar errors but somewhere around 25% I gave up.
If you've ever watched a daytime soap you know how ridiculous the plot can get. Unfortunately there were several instances of that here. Perhaps the most bizarre, a video chat with one of the MCs and at the other end his mother's tombstone! I'm not joking here, it happened.
There was lots of sex in the story. It seemed excessive but that may be just me. Some of it was really well written and made me sit up and take notice, so to speak. And then there's stuff like this: "I felt every burst, every drop of cum that filled my ass as his body convulsed under me." Say what?
There's also a really big cliffhanger at the end, just like the Friday episode of the daytime soap. Not sure I'll be there for the next installment of this one unless a trusted friend reads it first and gives the green light.
There was some humor here that I enjoyed. There was some sweet and romantic times that made me swoon. I didn't dislike the book and I've seen much worse as far as editing. I guess I just had really high hopes after seeing all the great reviews and felt very disappointed and let down with what was here.
If you like daytime soaps, this may be right up your alley. For me it was Days of Our Lives meets Beverly Hillbillies. Toss in the editing, or lack of, and it just didn't work out so well.
I have to point out there are lots of 4 & 5 star ratings and reviews on Goodreads and Amazon so it's entirely possible that this is a case of "it's me not you". I desperately want one of my friends to read this just so I can see if there reaction is similar to mine. Hummm, who wants to volunteer and take one for the team?
Ryder leaves his home, the farm, his not do much best friend anymore, and his Grandfather in Montana for the first time to attend college in California. He meets his gorgeous somewhat flamboyant roommate Bently (Ben), and there is an immediate spark. On the surface Ben is very confident and put together, but as the relationship takes a more serious turn and heats up, we see just how broken Ben really is. Will he let Ryder in or push him away?
I loved Ryder and Ben's story. It moved kind of fast at first. They go on their 1st date, then suddenly it's 3 months later and they are a serious couple. I would have liked to have seen more of the courting/dating stage, but I can live with what these ladies gave me. What they gave me was a smoking hot, heartbreaking, yet heartwarming, somewhat angsty romance.
I so enjoyed seeing Ryder and especially Ben open up and help heal old wounds. The sex was hot and plentiful, but not overwhelming.
It took a turn at the end I wasn't expecting, and has now left me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting and wondering when book 2 will be here, and also if there will be a book to take us on Ethan and Landon's journey? I sure hope so :-) Can't wait for more from these ladies in the future!
Okay, I was asked by a friend to review this story written by these two ladies, and I said sure. I adore reading. And I know I may not be proficient as an editor so I will not go into depth about the very limited mistakes I saw, no one is perfect. But as a reader, I spend more of my time on the story and not discriminating if Mt. should really be Mountain when referring to the label of a product. Any hoo back to my thoughts on this story...I absolutely adored it. It is funny...(Omg, the fainting goat.), I laughed about that part, picturing it in my head like I was there. I read this story non stop and I was sucked right in. It made me smile, it made me sad at certain points. It also made me say aww, and it made me want to slap some people.
As a writer, especially when you are writing a book introducing a series of stories, I understand the necessity of leaving a cliffhanger, so to speak. You need to have your readers looking forward to the next installment. But again, as a reader I was like, NOOOOOOO! And yes, the authors have me waiting impatiently for the next story. I enjoyed the story and I fully recommend this book.
2.5 Stars This read like a daytime soap opera and even though it had several tropes I love, it was so contrived as to be over the top and unbelievable. It also needed a good editor. Even still, I felt compelled to finish it and then it ended in a cliffhanger! *smdh* I'm guessing so people will feel the need to read the next one. I'm gonna pass on that one though.
Ryder's just arrived at college in California on the insistence of his grandfather that he fulfil the promise he made to his mother to finish his education. All Ryder really wants is to help run the ranch and pursue his love interest and best friend Landon. What neither expected was that his roommate at the dorm would be the very out and proud Bently. Despite or maybe because of his desire for a relationship with Landon Ryder can't seem to keep his eyes and hands from wanting Ben. Can these two very different people find enough common ground to form a relationship?
This was very nicely done! Two young men finding themselves together is a plot that is common but when the read is entertaining enough to halt me from putting it down for even a minute means that this was a story I was unwilling to let go of.
We have Bentley Carter, a proud and out gay young man in college, about to graduate and welcoming freshmen into the dorm when in walks cowboy, straight-looking, tobacco chewing Ryder Harrison. Of all the men he had been with, somehow, it is Ryder who strikes the chord he left untouched forever. Although it was difficult to comprehend or to even admit, Ben was falling hard. It does not help that Ryder is one awesome character who is loyal as loyal could be.
This is a beautiful and awesomely sweet love story about falling in love, maturation and decision making. Ben's past is not a fairy tale - well not compared to Ryder's happy family. Yes, both had their own tragedies but Ben felt that he should not ever let go of his heart or lose it forever to pain. Ryder was tough to resist though and just kept on with his decision to love and slowly his walls came crumbling down.
The drama of the story comes in Pops and Landon. For Ryder, he owed his whole being to Pops and only wanted to work the farm. Landon, his best friend since forever was his one weakness and falling in love with him was too easy. Getting rejected by Landon, however, was not a good thing and the rift seems bad enough to set them incommunicado with each other. When he fell in love with Ben, Ryder saw the difference of first flush love versus true love and thought and decided he would not leave the Ben's side and made a decision. For Pops, Landon and Ben, that decision was enough to make or break whatever bonds they had developed.
Then there was the ending!
Holen, that came out of the blue but it was perfect somehow and it just kept this story alive for me and longing for what comes next.
synopsis: ryder has been in love with his best friend landon forever, but landon isn't willing to come out of the closet and is, in fact, engaged. his grandfather has decreed that ryder needs to go to college in california, and since ryder promised his dying mother that he would continue his education, he does. they drive from montana (!) and ryder is introduced to his roommate, ben. ben was abused by his father and then was drugged and maybe? sexually assaulted within his first couple of years in college. the only person he has let be close to him is his friend with benefits. but ryder and ben strike sparks, so both of them have to learn to let go of the past.
what i liked: the premise. i liked the idea of a country cowboy and a city slicker learning about each other.
what i didn't like: well...i didn't like how all of a sudden ben's father popped up when he shouldn't have even been in the picture. and ryder's grandfather didn't really have a problem with ryder being gay, although he said he did, but was mad because he was losing ryder after they both lost ryder's mother? and ben's friend with benefits hooks up with landon? and even though they aren't talking to each other, ryder agrees to go to landon's wedding? and ben and ryder agree to move in together after TWO MONTHS of being together? (and by move in, i mean they BUY A HOUSE TOGETHER!!!!) and then, after living together for TWO WEEKS, they get married? and then ben's father shows up in a rage? and there's a hint that he may have had something to do with ben's assault? agggghhhh!!!! plus, the writing style just didn't click for me; i was rolling my eyes more often than not on this one. i really shouldn't have finished it, but it was like i could see headlights coming and i just couldn't move out of the way.
Ryder has been content with his life being raised by his mom and Grandfather. He loves ranching in Montana and hopes to take over the ranch someday. He is gay and his Grandfather knows and seems to accept this. After his mother’s death his grandfather decides to send Ryder to college in California so he can experience life outside the ranch and not have to be so grown up so fast. Ryder isn’t happy about this decision at all and didn’t want to leave Montana and his best friend Landon, whom he is in love with even though Landon claims to not be gay.
Bentley has been through a lot in his 20 years. He has faced abuse but shields his heart. He finds his new cowboy room-mate pushes buttons in him he would rather not be pushed.
I thought this was a very beautiful story. The characters are so interesting and you just want to hug these boys. I loved that each young man is dealing with his own issues and both are very different men. I loved Bentley and his exuberance and flamboyance. Also other characters are intriguing. There is a lot of sex but I didn’t feel it overshadowed the story and also shows the dynamic between the two without sounding like porn or making them seem they are only after sex. Well-done. The ending really took me by surprise and I cannot wait for the next book.
If you like broken men, coming of age, finding love, friends with benefits, college stories, new adult, sweet romance with some very hot man-sex this is for you.

Much better than I expected, this coming-to-terms book is about a relationship that begins very quickly, but somehow finds that perfect foothold to gain strength. Ryder and Ben are both unsure of themselves for various reasons, but they find solace in each other, even while questioning what's happening between them. A whirlwind romance that's refreshingly light on angst, but still carries enough conflict to keep the reader entertained.
A really good story!! A bit emotional at times, I had my cry moments;) A country boy going to college & outside his realm for the first time & a broken boy for his roommate & sparks fly immediately, beautiful love story!! This was a very good read & I didn't want to put the book down. Dang cliffhangers... Can't wait for book 2!!
Ryder and Bentley (Ben) are great characters who learn to come in to their own throughout this story. It was a refreshing read with true life complications, past hurts that both characters have to come to terms with and a few past lovers who may or may not have created jealousy amongst Ryder and Ben. However, in the end, each character learns something new about themselves.
I enjoyed the relationships throughout the book that were outside of Ryder and Ben's - I thought that it helped in the character development of each individual character and then helped in their relationship with each other as well. With Ryder's reluctance to leave his home in Montana and Ben's reluctance to devlope more than a simple friendly connection - they each take a journey that will break down what they think they want and rebuild them into who they were always been meant to be.
I enjoyed the relationship between Ryder and Pop a lot - I thought it went a long way for Ryder to be able to leave MT even though he might not have wanted to - It was at Pop's insistance that Ryder attend school and even though Pop is slightly rough around the edges, I couldn't help but love Pop's support of Ryder.
Ethan was another character that I learned to really like - despite his somewhat odd relationship with Ben, I came to realize that even though Ben would never love Ethan the way that he loved Ryder, Ethan was an important support for both characters in the end.
I wish I would have known this book ended with a slight cliff hanger - now I want to know what is going to happen in the future!
There were a few different formatting issues, but I loved the nail polish spacers.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
The Need to Touch is the story of Ryder and Ben, college roommates turned lovers practically from day one. Ryder is forced to attend college by his grandfather, but once he's there and forms a bond with his roommate Ben, Ryder never wants to leave. This doesn't bode well with his grandfather who had counted on Ryder returning and running the family Ranch one day. Since Ryder lost his mother, his pops is the only family he has, and he doesn't want to alienate him. But Ryder also wants to be his own man and make his own decisions.
Ben's life is far different from Ryder's. His parents are both alive and kicking, but Ben has little to no contact with them. The only reminders he has of his absentee father are the nightmares he still has over the abuse he suffered when he was younger at the hands of his father, and a fat bank account from monthly checks his father sends. It’s well into six figures, but Ben refuses to touch it, unless…
The two are inseparable from the start, unsure of how the relationship will progress, uncertain how long they will be together. But as time progresses they both open up to each other more and more sharing secrets, truths and eventually, love. But Ben still holds back a bit, mostly out of fear of admitting he loves Ryder, then to have to watch Ryder walk away. Everyone Ben has ever trusted or loved has hurt him, so he's understandably skittish. Then there is Ryder's pops and his ex-best friend slash ex-boyfriend of sorts that seem to be shadows, forever looming over Ryder's head.
Ryder and Ben will have to be completely honest with themselves and each other if their relationship is going to last long term. The odds are already stacked against them. They are very young, Ben is Ryder’s first real relationship, they don’t have the strongest support system at the moment. But if they want to build a life together strongly enough to fight for it, they will find a way.
I really enjoyed the concept of this story, the coming of age and figuring out who you are aspect. There were some ups and downs and while Ben and Ryder latch onto each other quickly, they still have to navigate the rough waters of a relationship. It's not insta-love by any means, there is a lot they have to figure out first. At times the story was a little choppy, didn't flow from one chapter to the other as well as I would have liked. And the Landon thing, saw that coming a mile away and it kind of conveyed a little forced, enough so that it pulled me out of the story.
Overall I really enjoyed this story to spite the few issues I had with content and cohesiveness. I was really rooting for Ryder and Ben and wanted them to figure things out in whatever way made it possible for them to stay together. The story ends on a cliffhanger and I'm so happy I already have book 2 to sink my teeth into, I don't have to wait for it. If you are a fan of coming of age stories, finding yourself, those hard fought happy ever after’s, then you'll enjoy this one as well, I'm sure.
For some reason I’ve led myself to believe that I’m not a fan of “college boy” or “dorm life” stories. I really don’t know where that belief came from but looking back I find myself more often than not, really enjoying them. So of course going into this one I’m like “ugh…college boys…” but like I now realize I’m so wrong. SO WRONG!!! This story was really great.
I was sold with “Pops” to be honest. Pushing his “out” grandson who’s only ever known the ranches of Montana to leave it all, go to college in California and know true freedom…I adored the man. I loved the fact that the authors didn’t put the same ole homophobic, rigid, straight-laced father figure in that role. Loved him!!
Ryder and Bentley are roomed together in their college dorm. Both open and out gay men they find themselves attracted to each other. They try to deny themselves but ultimately chemistry wins out and they both find themselves in a relationship. A relationship they both thought they didn’t want.
This is a coming of age, embracing your sexuality, and trusting your heart type of story. Ryder and Bentley just complement each other. Even the times when I thought whoa…possessive….but it was almost needed in the situation. I enjoyed those “claiming” moments. And I wasn’t put off by the jealousy, indecision and doubt…these two were solid and I really enjoyed them together.
Readers that gravitate towards these types of stories will love this one. The characters are immature at times but they’re teens/early 20s, so it’s expected and I absolutely understood it. I really enjoyed this one and am eager to read book 2!!

This is a relatively quick, easy read, perfect for a relaxed afternoon. Despite a few hints at heavier subjects, it’s mostly light, fluffy, steamy fare. The characters are likable and the story isn’t difficult to follow. If you’re looking for something mostly for escapism, this book is a good option.
My one hesitation is that the plot mostly seems like filler between the sex scenes. That’s fine, except that the authors seemed to be hinting at the troubled pasts of both main characters yet glossing over it and offering unrealistically quick resolution. At times, Ben in particular came across as though he’d had years of therapy and knew how to identify all his issues, though he didn’t seem in a hurry to actually resolve them. The relationship between Ryder and his grandfather also seemed shallow and unrealistic. I also wasn’t impressed by multiple uses of implied rape to make the characters more sympathetic. That’s a common trope in romance novels with female protagonists, creating the “flaw” that the male hero needs to save his woman from. Not that I think rape doesn’t happen to men, I just wish the authors had used a different plot device to create emotional drama.
The other problem I noted was that the copy I read had numerous grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. It could have benefited from a good copy editor or beta reader. That might also have resolved some of the issues I noted in terms of the story as well.
One thing that did impress me was how seamless the writing was despite being penned by two authors. They did an excellent job blending their writing. After reading their bios, I assume that comes from their lifetime of friendship. It’s definitely a strength.
Readers should be forewarned that the book ends with a cliffhanger. I personally like books that end that way; it makes me look forward to whatever comes next. In this case particularly, I expect the authors will grow as writers. But some people may be disappointed that the story isn’t sufficiently wrapped up at the end.
Oh. My. Word! I read a few of the reviews before starting this and couldn't quite get my head around what people meant when they described it as being like a soap opera - I totally understand now. I feel like I've been swept up in a whirlwind and spat out. I didn't know it was possible to squeeze that much drama into one book. It's so fast paced that sometimes, important things happened but they were skimmed over and other times, there was an information overload on the not so interesting occurrences.
From The minute we meet the two college room mates, Ryder and Bentley, their new friendship very quickly goes full speed ahead into something more. There's so much happens, I don't think I can explain it without providing spoilers. There's other boys, there's angry grandfathers, there's deep seated emotional issues, there's a road trip, one of them is loaded, there's a happily ever after (of sorts) but it ends on the weirdest cliff-hanger ever, that I never saw coming and which actually has me intrigued. Quite frankly, I'm exhausted and need to lie down.....
I really wanted to give this book five stars, but after that abrupt ending, I just can't. The story of Ryder and Bentley was amazing. I couldn't help but get drawn in to their story. It was very well written and was able to portray the emotions the characters were feeling beautifully. Normally, I am not a fan of reading books that are written by different point's of view throughout the story, I think it gets hard to keep up with who is telling their side, but this one worked out well. I can't wait for the next book. I have to know what happens next!!
WOW...this book made so emotional. My emotions were everywhere, from laughing to crying, to awwww, to shock moments, to OMG moments & until 89%in & it was the ugly crying until the end. Oh yeah, rotted that it ended in a big cliffhanger!! I thought it would end in HEA.. It was soooo good!! Did not want book to end!! I loved Ryder from that start & then started loving Ben. My heart hurt for him so much & I'm so happy that he opened up to Ryder!!! I cannot Wait for book 2,hopefully not to long, I need to know what happened next ;) A TBR for sure :)gladly
I really wanted to like it, the sample was really good, but I just couldn't get into the insta-love. I mean Ryder was barely a freshman, he still had lots to experience before he settled down. The story was just all over the place, plus the ending WTH?? that ending made me so mad. I'm going to try the 2nd book, just to see if the story closes out in a good way.
Two young men meet at college and there is an instant attraction. Close friends take some adjusting to by both of them. As generations try to meet in the middle, over issues they werent always comfortable with, history rears its ugly head!
I love these two! From the moment they got together I was hooked and glued to the page! It was mostly easy to read although I'd like a little more detail on room setting, etc. Other than that, I loved it! Cannot wait to find out Ben's father's deal! What a pig--and not the cute kind like Pinky!
Loved this book. Had me in tears at some parts. But a great story. I say a must read. I felt like I really got to know Ryder and Ben. Hope there is more I cant get enough of them. Hope there is a book number 2.
Ben and Ryder's story draws you in so that you have to find out what happens next. The supporting characters add so much to the storyline. The book was very well written. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
It's definitely HEA. Guy goes to college meets another guy discovers life out side a small town. I will read the next one cause this was just a lite story you don't have to strain to understand.
I loved a lot of things about this book. It was refreshing, sweet, loving as two boys worked out their problems with friends family, fears and insecurities.every young gay man could gain insight in its pages. Linda
