Tiadola has been hiding among humans for her whole life, fighting the deadly creatures sent by King Tuddn, and protecting the human nation. She knows she is only biding her time until the day comes when she is forced to go through a series of mental trials meant to eradicate her kind. Just before her trials are set to begin, Tia meets Zadrohn through dream walking, and her conflicted feelings only get more conflicted when she realizes that he is closely connected to the dragon called to perform the trials.
Tia is desperate to find a way to push back her trials. She wants to continue her fight against King Tuddn, and fears that all her and her best friend’s efforts from the past decades would be in vain if she died in the trials before they saw this through. The mix of resolve and anguish Tia felt was raw and intense, but also very realistic, considering that she knew what was coming for her, but no one can truly be ready to accept death when they feel they still have much left to do.
The story focuses on Tia’s journey and self-discovery, and the relationship she builds with Zad, but we can also see that there is more happening on the continent, and the political pieces are being moved in preparation for something big. The trials are mental ones, and they allow us to truly see Tia's strength. They allow her to know her deep self, to show her grit and determination, and I find that Tia's adventure was about learning to know and accept herself as much as it was about surviving the trials.
The ideas are good, the world-building is rich and intricate, and the characters are developed and feel real. The reason why I gave this book 3 stars has more to do with me than with the book. I struggled to get into it at first because of the complicated world-building (which is not a bad thing because rich world-building is a strength), and after that, I enjoyed the story, but I felt that a little something was missing for me to really get into it. That being said, it is a good book, and I am a minority here, as everyone is giving it 4-star or 5-star ratings.
The pace was a little slow at first, and that, combined with the mild info-dump, made it harder for me to get into the story and understand everything that was happening. The world-building is complex, and I felt like I spent half of my time going back and forth between the text and the map because there are continents, kingdoms, cities, races, and gods/goddesses that are presented in the first few chapters, and it was a little confusing. After that, though, things got clearer, and it was easier to follow what was happening, without having to check the map every other page.
While Tia finds Zad attractive from the moment she meets him, their relationship is not an insta-love, even though it doesn’t take too long for Tia and Zad to fall into bed together. Still, they do not swear eternal love to each other, because they know that things can’t end well between them because of Tia’s imminent trials. There is banter between them, but I found that it sometimes felt a little forced or too predictable to feel like it had a natural flow between both characters.
Zad feels as stuck as Tia is in the situation he finds himself in, except that he is not guaranteed to die. Still, his dragon is very dear to him, and he comes to consider Tia a friend after spending a little time with her. He knows the outcome of the trials is going to break his heart, no matter what happens.
Sam is Tia’s best friend and has been for decades now, and I love how there is no pointless jealousy or love triangle between him, Tia, and Zad. The love between Tia and Sam is purely fraternal, and I enjoyed seeing how strong their bond was. That being said, I would have loved to see more of him. While he is a steady presence in Tia’s life and is probably the most important person to her, we don’t see him much once Tia and Zad start spending more time together, and once Tia’s trials are underway.
The book ends with a mild cliffhanger, and now that Tia is done with her trials (I mean, you were not really expecting her to die, were you?), I imagine the next installment will focus more on the realm’s politics and the fights that are coming, which will probably give a different vibe and pace to the sequel.
If you like fantasy adventures with complex and rich world-building, dragons, banter, a relatable main character, and a dashing love interest, give this book a try!

I feel like I owe it to myself to leave the first review, which is more of a letter to myself than anything else.
Writing this book has been a whirlwind—I didn't even know it was possible to live in a perpetual state of doubt, while also feeling so, so hopeful. Tia's journey throughout the book was much the same, and I hope she makes it out unscathed, although... who knows? While this book ends in a cliffhanger, I promise by the end of the trilogy, it will be a HEA.
And to end with a quote:
"If we are not enough, we will become enough."

I read this ARC in like two days because I was super curious and intrigued by the plot and the concept behind it. It follows Tia, a strong warrior FMC who has spent her life in hiding among humans, when she’s finally subjected to the deadly mental trials of dragons, a decree issued by the gods ages ago in attempt to rid Tia’s kind. But we also meet Zad, whose dragon is the one called to the trials. So from there we see a lot of conflicting feelings and emotions, but there’s also a sense of something happening behind the scenes. I feel like this book was just the beginning of something bigger and maybe a kingdom in turmoil. I’m eager to see what happens next in this series!

Born to die… well, that’s not an ominous fate at all! 😅
This book was such a wild ride — packed with familiar favorites and a fresh, complex magical world. Dream-walking (seriously, how fun would that be?!), deadly trials, dragons 🐉 with three heads, no less! Plus a little spice 🌶️ to heat things up! It had all the elements to keep me hooked.
I’ll admit, it took me a minute to get fully into it — there was a lot of info at the start, and I had to wrap my head around how this world worked. But once it clicked, I was in!
Fun, deadly, magical, and thoroughly entertaining — this one lands somewhere between 4-4.5 ⭐️’s

What would it be like to be subjected to trials that only take place while you’re unconscious – asleep, unable to defend yourself physically, and forced to rely solely on your dreams?
Well, you can find out by diving into the story of Tia, a halwen, who is forced to fight for her life, even though she knows the odds are against her.
This is a story that starts off a bit slowly, filled with details that help build the world the author has created, but it becomes more and more captivating as you read on. Tia is a remarkable character – brave, mature, full of sarcasm, and capable of deep, unconditional love. She possesses the ability to travel through dreams, and in one of those journeys, she meets Zad – a mysterious stranger who becomes her friend and ultimately her ally in the fight to protect humanity. But Zad is hiding more than he lets on, and the friendship between them is put to the test.
This story had me completely hooked. Even though the beginning was a bit dense, packed with the information needed to understand the world in which the story unfolds, I loved the way the universe was built, how the connections between characters were crafted, how the magic worked. I was genuinely surprised to realize that the “trials” mentioned in the title didn’t actually begin until near the end of the book – by which time I was already so emotionally invested, I found myself hoping they’d never happen. Of course, I knew they would – because that’s what the story is about – but I still longed for a miracle.
I really loved the relationship between Tia and Sam. Even though their past was a bit wild, the memory Tia shares about their first meeting and how Sam entered her life was both touching and memorable. I admired Tia’s devotion to her people, her determination to help them, guide them, and prepare them to face danger. But above all, I adored how her relationship with Zad evolved. From the beginning, I sensed there was more to it than met the eye, and although I had my suspicions, everything unfolded in such a beautiful and emotional way.
The moments they shared warmed my heart and moved me deeply. I realized that, despite their age, neither of them had truly experienced love before. That realization saddened me, but at the same time, I was happy to see that they allowed themselves to feel it and escape into that love.
And of course, how could I not mention the dragon?
Vrutyl - in true dragon fashion – arrogant, confident he was the best and knew it all. But deep down, he was just as vulnerable as the others. He had human-like desires: to be in control of his own mind and actions. And that hurt to witness – that even a mighty creature like him could long for something so basic, just like us, the supposedly fragile, perishable humans.
I truly loved this story. I filled it with sticky notes, marked so many quotes and passages. And yes, I wholeheartedly recommend the book! The universe is carefully constructed, full of details that may slow you down at first, but everything eventually falls into place beautifully. There’s humor, too – Tia’s sarcasm is a highlight, but Zad and Sam don’t fall behind either.
There are so many emotional moments, confessions of love, and vulnerable character traits that shine through. I’m not sure I managed to say everything I wanted, but one thing’s for sure: I was completely won over by this story.
And the ending… oh, the ending!
Thank goodness I already have book two – I’m diving into it immediately. That’s all I’ll say.

As we move through the pages of TITOQ, it feels much like the beginning to an epic fantasy but what a fantastic beginning it is! Catalina mixes three headed dragons with hopeless trials, complex emotions, and precious romance into a beautiful dish of pining, relatability, and entertainment.
In TITOQ, we follow dual POVs, but mainly our doomed FMC, Tia, as she faces the trials required for those born has half Soronian, half human. Cursed by the god Tuvin, no one before her has survived. Leaving everything she knows to face her limited destiny, Tia is joined by our other POV, Zad, who has followed the dragon (his dragon) who must conduct Tia’s trials.
Catalina does a great job with this introduction to this new and unique world of mind walkers at helping us feel every emotion Tia goes through as she considers how her life has been, where it’s going, and all the things she’ll miss in a world that took her choices. Because she is supported by a fantastic male, she gets to experience love for the first time and a complete understanding. Our dark, handsome, and mysterious male is so sweet and I can’t wait to see more of his secrets unravel.

I have to admit, I really liked this book! It’s a solid 4⭐️ read for me.
What impressed me the most was the world-building — especially the fascinating social hierarchy of the Made, the Born, and the Halwens, alongside the Dragons and Gods. It felt unique and refreshing, and it's what hooked me from the very beginning.
Also, I feel like this deserves to be said: Catalina’s achievement is truly remarkable. Writing so fluently in a language that isn’t your native one is incredibly difficult, and I don’t think she gets enough credit for that. I'm honestly in awe of the level of craft she managed to deliver.
Of course, I fell absolutely in love with Zad and Tia. They were perfect mirror-souls, if you ask me. Their road trip to Kavaltys took up about half the story, but I didn’t mind it at all — it was filled with delicious banter, sweet moments, and slow-burn chemistry. Whether as friends or something more, they made me smile from ear to ear and had me rooting for them every step of the way.
The ending didn't fully take me by surprise, but it definitely left me curious about what’s coming next — especially what happened inside Tia’s mind at the end of the third trial! Even though the “imminent trials” are mentioned from the start but only occur at the very end, I didn’t mind the slow build. The journey of getting to know these characters (and seeing them fall for each other) made it absolutely worthwhile.
Not to mention the found families! I adored Tia’s circle of friends — honestly, anyone lucky enough to have a Samthi in their life is blessed. But Zad’s found family completely stole my heart... especially sweet little Myv!
(Seriously, why don’t we have dragons in real life? I feel cheated.)
I do want to gently mention a couple of things that didn’t quite work for me:
I didn’t fully understand Tuvin’s grudge against the Halwens — it felt a little petty without deeper context. Also, the trials themselves, while a cool concept, felt a bit underdeveloped. I was hoping for something a little more intense and fleshed out. That said, these were minor bumps in an otherwise charming and heartfelt story.
All in all, I enjoyed the book a lot — and I'm excited to dive right into the next one, especially to see what twists and adventures Catalina has in store for us next!

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STORY!
The star of this book is a complex one. We are introduced to the world and magic system, and they are very tricky, rich, and perplexing at times. However, once you move through the pages, you encounter wonderful stories with well-developed characters and a plot with two main roads that will eventually have to come together.
Catalina's writing style is fantastic. She has a way with words that I kept highlighting phrases and sentences because I couldn't believe they were written in such a profound way.
I'm in love with all of the characters, especially Zad. That man is everything; I have no words that accurately describe how his character made me feel. I want to cry because he doesn't exist in real life; he is perfection.
Tia is such a well-rounded FMC; she is strong and experienced, but she knows her fears, and despite them, she continues her journey in the name of her loved ones.

The star of this book is a complex one. We are introduced to the world and magic system, and they are very tricky, rich, and perplexing at times. However, once you move through the pages, you encounter wonderful stories with well-developed characters and a plot with two main roads that will eventually have to come together.
Catalina's writing style is fantastic. She has a way with words that I kept highlighting phrases and sentences because I couldn't believe they were written in such a profound way.
I'm in love with all of the characters, especially Zad. That man is everything; I have no words that accurately describe how his character made me feel. I want to cry because he doesn't exist in real life; he is perfection.
Tia is such a well-rounded FMC; she is strong and experienced, but she knows her fears, and despite them, she continues her journey in the name of her loved ones.

Having someone by your side was a blessing but having yourself was vital.
After centuries of protecting and preparing the human world on the brink of war, Tiadola now faces the three-headed dragon in her dreams tied to her fate. As the last of her kind, Tia journeys to her fated trials with a henchman she initially believes was in charge of her capture. As we follow along their journey, their friendship grows and their chemistry ignites as they move towards Tia’s impending doom.
Catalina truly delivers existential angst in this unique debut! I really enjoyed the premise with the dragons, the political instability, the petty gods and the magic system of mental powers and dream walking. We get a VERY detailed internal dialogue of Tia grieving her ultimate demise as she leaves her friends and human world she has protected her whole life. I actually think it was laid on a little too much and became repetitive to the point where I couldn’t really focus on anything else. There were many parts that were beautifully expressed, but the constant gloom and doom mentality felt too drawn out and made the journey longer than I think it needed. I also think it kept me from fully connecting with the characters. The banter, however, was fun! Although it felt a bit insta-lust for me, the spicy scenes were SO good!! Zad was just the right amount of mysterious and sexy we all love!
Ultimately, it was a little harder to follow the storyline outside of her being really sad, BUT I think this has great potential to develop into a fantastical world with all of the dragon magic and background introduced if we can get it fleshed out a little more.

The first thing I want to mention, what made me like the main character from the beginning, is the fact that she was afraid of her end.
Unlike other characters who are way too brave or find their end a reason for sacrifice, Tia was very relatable. Even though she had so many years to come to terms with the idea, this did not make the fear of death any less relevant, In fact, she was afraid until the very last moment.
Ok, now let's move on to the story as a whole. Although Catalina advertises the book as something similar to Fourth Wing or other books, it doesn't seem like it at all to me. This book is unique in its own way (leaving aside the dragons that already exist in folklore) because the magic system is one I've never encountered before, at least not by me, and the magical world is a very interesting one.
Although it was a little hard for me at first to remember what each being is and what it does, after that everything became easier (that's why I love books in physical format, I can always go back to the beginning and reread something).
The way each feeling was described, in such a poetic way, it's sad that this book isn't more well known.
The world building seemed perfect, original and easy to understand after a few pages.
One thing that didn't appeal to me was how quickly the two characters evolved, seemingly in such a short time, but that's just a personal opinion.
And even though the book have a dual POV, usually I don't like this, in this book was like...natural. Didn't jumped suddenly to the other POV, it came natural and easy to follow.
I can't wait to get my hands on the second volume and escape the devastating cliffhanger.

Our FMC Tia is a strong and witty Dream Walker who has managed to avoid her trials for three centuries. That is until she meets a "stranger" when dreamwalking, marking the imminent start to her trials of quietus. Zad, said stranger, quickly reveals himself to be more friend than foe, eager to find his mirror soul and escape his right as the heir of the kingdom. Along Tia's journey to her trial, she finds herself falling for Zad, realizing she may be the one he's been looking for...unfortunately, timing is not on their side.
While the beginning of the book is a little slower pace, it is appreciated to build our FMC's backstory and learn more about the world. That does mean the trial portion of the book in the later half is a much faster pace. I would have liked more pages of action through those later chapters (and maybe more story on Vutryl), but I was hooked into the story start to finish.
This is set up excellently for the next book since it ends on a huge cliffhanger! The last 5% of the book is an absolute nail biter!
I can't wait for book 2's release this week!

This author decided to break my heart at the end only to sow it back together at the last moment 🥹
Tia has prepared her entire life for her death, but the Born king is out for war and she needs to protect the humans. She wants a purpose and so she will train and prepare for the war.
The first attack or Myrdec was a tragic one, the future now seemed lost since it had been murdered. But the king should have known better because Rage is what fuels people to keep going he hoped they would cave under grievances but Tia made sure her friends would oversee everything going well.
Now Tia met a stranger who will bring her to her trials and she discovers his secrets. Which breaks the trust and friendship between them but slowly she lets him build it back up. And they become more she tries to fight it for a long time but you can’t fight your Mirror-soul for long and it bursted in a heated passion of need that was all consuming 🔥
Loved the dragons in this book also Vrutyl even though he’s a grump 😆

This one started out a bit slow for me but once I was in, I was hooked - I think I read this in two sittings over the span of 24 hours.
Following the prologue, you meet the main character of the story, Tiadola and her friend Samthi. There's a bit of an info dump that was a little confusing, but a lot of it makes sense as you read further in the story.
Even with the info dump, it was an intriguing story right from the beginning. The magic system, world building and characters were all really interesting and the writing itself was really well done. The writing flowed really well and the style and use of specific language added to the premise of the story.
I feel like this is going to be an epic sort of story as it continues. The end of this one was a major cliffhanger and I loved the way it ended - and left me with so many questions!
Everything about this book was really well written and well developed, and I can't wait to read the next one and learn more about the world, the characters, and what that ending REALLY means!

I really enjoyed this book! At the start, the world building and magic system was a lot to take in, but once i understood, then I got really into the book!
The magic system is very unique and I really liked that! I also loved the history of the world, and this was explained really well!
Zad! What can I say... I love him! Such a sweet, obsessive MMC, and i can't wait to see more of him in the next book! The banter between him and Tia was excellent! Tia did feel a little negative a lot of the time, but i completely understand why, and I liked seeing her progression as the book went on.
It ended on a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to see how the next book pans out!

Even though I found the story starting very slow when I actually started reading it I couldn't let the book down and that's how I finished it in 3 days. Here is the synopsis:
🐉The story follows a very sarcastic character named Tiadola, a halwen, half human and half Soronian. She knew all her life that someday she will have to face her Imminent Trials and die in the end, like all the halwens before. After three centuries, that day comes when the three headed dragon sets in motion the trials.
🔥Her last journey brings her closer to her "henchman" which will become a friend, making her want more from every friendship she had in the past.
💫Tiadola spent all her life training and fighting for her friends and people, when the war knocks at the door of her land she needs to be the first one to win the trials and save the humans, but will she succeed?
I really enjoyed the author's descriptions, Tiadola's perspective was always filled with beautiful, poetic illustrations of the world, besides her sarcastic personality even in the worst moments of her life. Zadrohn was always by her side, and even though he was presented as the "enemy" in the beginning, we learn that he has a soft spot for her, but I won't spoil more than that.
I felt that the story started really slow because of the world building, Tiadola and her friends preparing from the beginning for a fight against the dark forces of King Tuddn and I expected this part of the story to be more developed in the second book.
After Tia leaves her beloved town to engage in her last journey the story becomes fast paced, things between her and Zad growing really fast, to be honest.
The ending was really uncertain, a cliffhanger that I can't wait to be continued in the other book, because I need maaany answers.
I really enjoyed Tia's relationship with her best friend Sam, it was so pure and genuine and I can't wait to learn new things about him in the next book too.
I rate this book 3.50-3.75 ⭐, but I want to mark the things that I didn't enjoy as much as the others. The first thing would be how slow paced the begging is, I struggled with reading it at first and then everything seemed really fast, her relationship with Zad evolved quickly, making me think "Wait a minute, they've known each other for just three days", but somehow you get to understand this bond between them later.
I recommend this book especially if you love a fierceful and sarcastic FMC, a MMC that's very gentle and an interesting word building, illustrated through poetic descriptions.

The start of the book was gaining information about the lore of the world, but once you understood how things worked the story became more fast paced.

What a fantastic fantasy that’s full of rich world building, unique magic system, and existential angst!! I really enjoyed this one, even though it was slow start. But after about an hour of reading I got my bearings with the world and the story really took off from there! This had some beautiful, detailed, and prolonged spicey scenes and I just ate them up! 🔥 So so good! I loved our characters—Tia is a badass and Zad is so charming, and the banter between them was so fun! Very excited to see where the next book takes us!!

I really enjoyed this book. Once I got into it, it was really hard to put down. It did take me quite a while to get into it. The magic/class and the world building was a little confusing at the start, but you eventually understand everything. The author also puts a glossary in the front that you can always refer to as well if you need a refresher. With this book, you kinda get thrown into action almost right away, which is why the world building took a while to understand. Other than that, I thought the pacing of the book was great, the plot was very different from what I’ve read recently, and the ending left me wanting more, SO MUCH MORE!!! If you love books with gods, deadly trials, mind control, and dream walking then this book is hon a be right up your alley. Can’t wait to dive into book 2! ☺️

The imminent trials of Quietus is book one in the Veils of Fate series by Catalina Matei. And let me tell you, this is everything you need for a good dragon book. It was different enough to stand out and the build-up in this book is amazingly done. I devoured this book and could not put it down because I had to know the ending!

The fact that there’s a glossary at the beginning of the book helped me immensely in understanding the structure of the world, making me feel like I was part of it. I love when an author respects their readers by not oversimplifying everything but instead allowing them to gradually discover each detail.
Characters That Aren’t Perfect but Feel Authentic
Tiadola struck me as one of the best-crafted female characters I’ve encountered in a fantasy novel. She’s not just “the chosen one”; she’s a real person, with doubts, fears, and difficult choices to make. I felt every hesitation, every moment of despair, and every glimmer of hope alongside her.
Zadrohn is the kind of male character who isn’t just there to be “the mysterious guy” or “the typical hero.” He has depth, his own story, and—most importantly—he doesn’t overshadow Tiadola. Their relationship is one of the best-developed I’ve read in a long time—it grows gradually, has moments of tension and vulnerability, and never feels forced.

I honestly don’t even know how I started talking to Catalina Matei, but thank the gods I did — because that’s how The Imminent Trials of Quietus landed in my hands. And oh boy, I devoured it!
This is the first book in the Vials of Fate series and I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved it. The worldbuilding? So rich and complex. The writing? Clean, captivating, and so easy to follow. I flew through the pages so fast I didn’t even realize when I reached the end.
Also, Catalina… WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?! Why was Vrutyl screaming?! I need book two right now because my curiosity is eating me alive.
Catalina mentioned that some readers said the story starts slow. I completely disagree. The pacing felt perfect to me — every little detail built the foundation of this intricate world filled with gods, dragons, magic, and two nations at war. I felt there, living every moment.
And I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: the only other author who’s managed to build such a vivid world for me is Sarah J. Maas. That’s how good this book is.
The best part? I don’t even have to wait long for the next ones, because the final volume comes out tomorrow — October 23rd! 🎉

I honestly don’t even know how I started talking to Catalina Matei, but thank the gods I did — because that’s how The Imminent Trials of Quietus landed in my hands. And oh boy, I devoured it!
This is the first book in the Vials of Fate series and I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved it. The worldbuilding? So rich and complex. The writing? Clean, captivating, and so easy to follow. I flew through the pages so fast I didn’t even realize when I reached the end.
Also, Catalina… WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?! Why was Vrutyl screaming?! I need book two right now because my curiosity is eating me alive.
Catalina mentioned that some readers said the story starts slow. I completely disagree. The pacing felt perfect to me — every little detail built the foundation of this intricate world filled with gods, dragons, magic, and two nations at war. I felt there, living every moment.
And I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: the only other author who’s managed to build such a vivid world for me is Sarah J. Maas. That’s how good this book is.
The best part? I don’t even have to wait long for the next ones, because the final volume comes out tomorrow — October 23rd! 🎉

The Imminent Trials of Quietus is an ambitious and captivating start to Catalina Matei’s Vials of Fate series. The world-building is rich and imaginative, filled with dragons, gods, and a unique system of trials that kept me completely intrigued. Tiadola is a fantastic protagonist — strong, vulnerable, and deeply relatable — and her growth throughout the book is compelling. The romance with Zad is tender and believable, and the friendships and found-family elements add a lot of heart to the story.
The pacing and suspense pull you in, with emotional highs and intense stakes that make it difficult to put down. The lore is dense and detailed, which adds so much depth to the world, and the ending leaves you eager for the next installment — a testament to how invested you become in these characters.
If I were to note anything, it would be that the beginning takes a little time to settle in due to the wealth of new characters and world details. Some sections move more slowly while building the setting and history, and the ending leaves a few threads unresolved. But these are minor quibbles compared to the overall enjoyment — this book lays a strong foundation for the series and made me excited to continue with Book 2.

The Imminent Trials of Quietus was an intriguing read, and I went in not really knowing what to expect. Tiadola, the main character, is complex in a way that pulled me in. She carries centuries of weight, hope, and dread, and I could really feel the heaviness of her choices as I read. The trials, the sense of fate hanging over everything, and the mythological details—like the three-headed dragon—gave the story an epic and haunting feel that made me want to keep reading.
What I enjoyed most was the dynamic between Tiadola and the so-called henchman. Seeing trust and connection develop in such an uncertain, hostile world was something I didn’t know I needed until it happened. This relationship brought a softer, more human side to the darker themes. The writing is lush and dramatic, which fits perfectly with a world shaped by vengeance and divine entertainment.
That said, I did find the pacing uneven at times. Some sections felt a bit too drawn out, and the tension dropped when I wanted the story to move forward more steadily. At this story's heart is Tia, a character who is that perfect blend of strength and vulnerability. She's been waiting for a set of trials that will likely lead to death via dragon. She soon finds that she's being visited by said dragon and his accomplice.
One of the standout elements here is the dynamic between Tia and Zad. I'm so excited for this series. Tia and Zad are phenomenal.
I love the poetic narration and the self awareness of the main characters. Both flawed, but doing their best.
Tia is an immortal, a halwen, but her life spawn is threatened by a world-long curse thrust upon the dragons. Halwens must perish, and it's a dragon's duty to see that it is done. She's lived in hiding, helping the humans survive the malice of the Born. Between her and her best friend Samthi, maybe humanity as a chance of standing against the Born.
But to live in fear that at any given moment the dragon compelled to hunt you and subject you to the imminent trials that will lead to your quietus means living in a confinement of your own making.
Meeting the dragon sets her free. Meeting him also puts a very short deadline on her life spawn. Will she survive her trials?
If she won't, it's not just her found family she's leaving behind.
She's living behind the stranger Zad too.
And Zad might just be worth living for.
The passive stranger, the one who hid from life, duty, and responsibility. He meets her and finds his strength, only to find out their time is beyond limited. Is naught.
Absolutely loved it.
And the dragons. I want to take Myvva home with me and feed her berries.
Definitely recommend and 100% excited to start book 2.

I read this because the author graciously gifted me an ARC of book 2! I went in blind but I’m a sucker for trials so I was excited! It didn’t disappoint! Tia is doomed to die in her imminent trial but she’s hoping she’ll be able to help protect the humans in the was they’re facing before she must face her trial. She meets Zad (who I instantly loved) and finds out he’s connected with the dragon hunting her to take her to her trials. Tia decided to go willing to her trials (before the full war is upon the humans) and Zad helps to get her there and gives her as much information as he can provide about the trials. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I really enjoyed this book and it ends with quite rhetorical cliffhanger so I can’t wait to get into book 2 so hopefully my questions will be answered!!

I found the author’s writing style to be somewhat academese, giving the story an artistic and refined feel. I loved the concept of the trials, and the unique magic system was intriguing. Personally, I think it fell a little flat for me, but I’m excited to see how Catalina’s writing develops as the series progresses. The cliffhanger has left me eager to find out what happens next in Tiadola’s story.
