3.5 stars. I listened to Jo Lovett's novel, "We Were on a Break," though Goodreads does not show that edition, but rest assured, I listened to it, fabulous accents and all! I loved the 2nd half, when it seemed more serious and thought provoking, than the first half, where I was questioning whether or not I wanted to keep going. I am glad I did.
At the start Emma is tasked with giving a lift back to London to a guy who knows a friend of a friend, but in actuality, that guy, Callum, and Emma had loved one another deeply a long, long time ago. Emma had broken up with Callum a decade earlier due to his issues with alcohol. He no longer has a driver's license, and needed to get back to London from a trip to Rome. Emma was heading there as well, but had planned to makes stops in Europe along the way. The last person with whom each would want to be stuck in a camper van was one another! Volcanic ash had shut down roads, and the van had non functioning windshield wipers. Thus began days on the road together in some interesting, funny, and compromising positions, including spending a night in a monastery. Chemistry is difficult to ignore, and these two definitely had that, but she has been so hurt that he never never got back in touch with her, as promised, when he got sober, that she does not trust him. He HAD gotten sober, and had become a lawyer, but had not reached out to her, ever.
In the second half of the book, which has some romantic, spicy scenes, the dialogue grows more serious, and we eventually come to understand why Callum has stayed away. While traveling together, it becomes obvious that these characters still have deep feelings for one another, but what kept Callum from committing to her originally, is still at the forefront of his mind, leaving Emma facing possible heartbreak yet again.
This book was far more serious than I had expected, and I liked that about it. I grew attached to the characters and waited for them to figure things out and stop being fools. I will not say if they achieved that or not, but I am glad I continued to read until the last page!
