★★★★★ Wow. Right from the first chapter, I was hooked on the seductive darkness these characters hold. - Goodreads review
When Layla’s girlfriend died, her heart shattered into a million pieces. But she is powerless in seeking justice against those responsible. Invasive technology monitors her every move. Wealthy men and their big companies rule this world. London is their playground and women are pawns in their game.
That’s where her housemate, Katarina, comes in. She’s brave and determined. An eye for an eye, she says. Blood for blood. What scares Layla though, is Katarina doesn’t seem to care whose blood she spills.
While Katarina’s lust for vengeance grows stronger, Layla fears she may lose herself as she twists Layla’s thoughts to match her own.
She was everything Layla wanted to be once. Now she is everything she fears.
This is a dark novel. A full list of trigger warnings can be found on the copyright page
After the stock market crashes a new order is put in place. At Ward Innovations Technologies, IMAtech is injected under the workers skin. It will record every second of their life and report it to the board members. The board members sit in a glass room above the workers - always watching. Men rule the world and women are something to be contained. But now, one-by-one, the board members are being picked off.
In this world you’re only one bad day from being fired and replaced by AI. Because, AI doesn’t talk back, doesn’t get tired, and surely never stops working.
Memorable: the author’s descriptions, metaphors, and similes: “a weasel choking on cat shit”, “a clown of helium”, “long yellow teeth like piss”, “chemistry cant exist between a slug and a peacock,” were just some of my favorites.
This book is a wildly gripping - though absurd - a dystopian thrill ride that I couldn’t put down. The relentless pressure of a workplace where not a second can be wasted shined throughout the plot. The book tackles real world issues while keeping things fresh and fun.
I also found the commentary on medication in the workplace to be particularly fascinating. Rather than addressing the root causes of exhaustion and burnout, corporations push pharmaceutical solutions - because why fix the system when you can just medicate the workers instead? Overworked? Just take a pill and keep going. Pat on the back folks! #workering
Loved all the blood and gore even though most of that was off-page and we only saw the aftermath of it. Katarina and Layla are the perfect female characters and I’m so happy there’s another book after this one because I NEED MORE.
Layla’s struggles at work, her mourning Isobel, and her growing dark fantasies of causing harm to the board members is palpable. I just LOVE her! The way Katarina uses the men against each other, manipulating them to get what she wants is also so alluring. Just the best duo!
To be really honest, this book really got on my nerve in those first few chapters!!
Guys: AI world setting, cheating, murders, queer, feminism, plot twist, creepy moments, you think you guessed it right, but you are wrong (at the end).
Layla works in a video game development company (WIT) that injects chips in employees their skins to basically monitor their productivity. But this chip does way more than monitoring. In a very messed way!!. WIT Is basically a modern slavery company in a thriving AI world that has an issue with women. They don't cut any slack of Downgrading them. - the whole time I was questioning why the hell someone would work there, I would die jobless -. Layla is not at all happy at her work because it's torture but she doesn't have any other options. While layla is working her ass off, she also dwells. Her girlfriend Isobel died in an accident because of the company. Layla lives with Katarina her housemate. Katarina keeps telling Layla to take actions against the company but Layla ignores her. After all what can a poor woman like her do. Katarina assures her that things will get fixed, an eye for an eye. Things starts to get messy when the owner of the company suddenly commits suicide.
💭: So after reading a few thrillers, I thought my prediction would be good. The author made me feel like I predicted it, just to prove me wrong at the very end. Because of that the suspense was a bit less but the surprise at the end covers that missing suspense.
Thank you netgalley and Victory Editing for this amazing book.
Be Her is a dytopian techno thriller that is told in dual narration. Our two narrators are Layla, who is the keep your head down and do as your told type. And Katarina, who is loud, brave, and ready to make a stand against the patriarchy.
The world is run by rich men, and mega corporations are their gods. Women are nothing more than play things and pawns. They serve little purpose in this society, far less in the workplace, as AI has everyone in a chokehold. Trackers implanted in the skin to monitor productive hours and hormonal levels, pills to make you work longer and faster.
The world that Ellis painted enraged me. I couldn't wait to watch it burn. I loved the dual narration and how truly opposite our two MCs are. Although they both play an equally important part in the story, I preferred Katarinas character. This story kept my interest and had me eagerly flipping pages. I especially loved the darker elements of the story and all of its twists.
Emma Ellis is an insta-read author for me. If she writes it, I'm gonna read it. She seems to have a flare for writing dystopian style stories, and I am 100 % here for it. She did not disappoint me at all with this one! This was darker than the last series but still a twisty and fascinating read.
I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
This is an interesting and entertaining book! Big corporations, AI technology and a man’s world are the running forces in the story. There’s lots of excitement and suspense throughout, and a great twisty ending also! I enjoyed the story being told from Layla and Katrina’s point of views, as they are very different people! This is my first book by Emma Ellis and I will definitely check out more!
Thank you to Emma Ellis for an arc copy of this fun book!
⭐⭐⭐ Be Her by Emma Ellis is a dark and twisty story set in a world where AI and rich and powerful men dictate how the world runs. First of all, I love the cover. Absolutely adorable. The blurb and cover made a completely different picture in my head. I don't know what I expected but unfortunately, I didn't get full satisfaction. I can't explain why but I struggle so much to connect with the story.
There are some crazy moments and some parts make you hate men, the way they talk and act is just mad! In some way, this book shows the possibility of the future. The way it was presented felt so real and was easy to accept it as reality. The end twist definitely will leave you with an open mouth!
The main characters Layla and Katarina are complicated, it's hard to work out how much you like or dislike them. Katarina is a strong character. Despite everything I think she was my favorite! Layla is more softy, she wants to be stronger but she can't work out how so the only way she comes up with is by trying to think like Katarina. But she doesn't know the real Katarina.
Thank you for this copy and I believe there will be many readers who will love this story!
Emma Ellis has become one of those authors to me, that no matter what she writes, I’m going to read it, and I know I’m going to love it. Be Her was no exception. Wow. What a crazy ride with this book.
Again, Ellis builds a world that while made up, is too frighteningly realistic. Speculative fiction or not, you can see these things happening in the near future, and it’s not pleasant to think about. The main characters in this book, Layla and Katarina, are well developed, as well as the men that you come to hate, you just hope for something to happen to them.
I thought I had it all figured out while reading, but the ending definitely squashed that. The surprise twist at the end was completely unexpected, and left me thinking about the book even after I had finished it.
Another hit out of the park for Emma Ellis. Can’t wait to see what happens in book 2!
I received an advance reader copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Brilliant! A truly twisted & tense psychological, speculative thriller! Really well written, what messed up characters, the plot is so well done & I was almost dizzy with the twists & turns! A real "must read" for me! I do strongly recommend!
this book was crazy good! the world created is so similar to ours but also stands out as something futuristic and almost scary. The story kept my attention 100%, with huge twists that I never saw coming. I can't wait for book 2!!
Unfortunately this book is so not me. Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC copy though. Centered around what seems like the not too distant future. When men are at the highest seat at the table, woman are really just play things, and AI is a looming treat to make people work harder. Premise seems good. Cover looks good. But I couldn’t get into it. Put it down multiple times and kept telling myself to finish it. I tried. Got halfway through and called it a day. To me, there seemed to be a lot of repetition. ‘Oh I’m such an introvert, can’t speak up, but my flatmate is Uber cool and opinionated, I wish I can be her’ Unsure what the ending is, I have a strong feeling I know what it is, but don’t want to waste another 4 hours finding out.

This story had me guessing the whole time! Right when I thought knew what was happening, the author would shake things up. I love how the author brings attention to big corporations abusing their employees. Even though this was just a story, it’s 100% true, they only look to replace you as soon as you’re gone. I had such a hard time putting this book down. I read it when I had downtime at work which is the only reason it took me 10 days to finish. The story was funny, thrilling, and suspenseful. I loved it!
4.5 stars This was my first Emma Ellis book I've ever read and I was enraptured in this story. This story is multi-POV following two main female characters. Layla is a video game developer. She works for a big techy corporation that is threatening to rid itself of human employees and replace them all with AI if they can't work at the same speed and productivity level of an AI. All employees are injected with a microchip that monitors their health and alerts them in what vitamins and supplements they need in order to keep their productivity level at its peak. Layla is unhappy with her job and is tired, overworked, and very stressed but she is also very shy, timid, doesn't like confrontation and likes to fly under the radar. She was also dating a fellow female employee named Isabel, who dies in a car accident because she was overworked and exhausted. Katarina is Layla's roommate and is everything that Layla isn't. She's sociable, works in a bar, goes out, is always buying new things, and is very out there. Layla wishes to be more like Katarina. Katarina seems slightly obsessed with Layla and decides to take revenge on Layla's job for making her work so hard and for the things that it's doing to it's employees.
At first... I thought, wow, Katarina is really unhinged. But boy, was I wrong. Layla was really unhinged!! I was getting slightly irritated with how annoyed Layla was with work... because, if you hate your job that much, why are you still there??? I get that a lot of jobs were being taken over by AI, but... still, apply elsewhere until you find something else? I was also very confused as to how she was working so much, so hard, not really spending, yet, she was so broke. How was she not able to track where her money was going? I think the way the men spoke about women in this book made the storyline seem so much more relatable and realistic because it's something that we still see today in a lot of big corporations. The lack of respect for women in the workplace is all too real. I'm usually really good about being able to predict the plot twist and while I speculated the first one, I definitely didn't see the second one coming!
All in all, this was a great read. I enjoyed Emma's writing style and the story flowed well. I will be looking into more of her books.
This was a captivating novel that delves deep into the intricacies of identity and self-discovery. The author has crafted a narrative that is as thought provoking as it is emotionally engaging, that daws you into a world where the characters' struggles and triumphs feel incredibly real and relatable.
The story is told from two perspectives; Layla and Kat, two women that live in a world ruled by men. Emma does an exceptional job of portraying the internal conflicts and external pressures that shape these charaters’ paths.
One of the standout aspects of Be Her is the way the author handles sensitive and challenging themes. Issues of identity, belonging, and self-acceptance are explored with a level empathy that is both refreshing and impactful.
While the book is undeniably powerful, there are moments where the pacing feels a bit slow for me which occasionally disrupted the flow of the story. I did also predict one of the first twists that happens in the book really early on, I remember reading something that seemed like foreshadowing and guessed what was going to happen.
In conclusion, Be Her is a compelling and beautifully written novel that offers a deep and meaningful exploration of identity and self-discovery.
This dark, speculative thriller is set in a dystopian world controlled by big corporates, where humans have to compete with AI to prove themselves worthy of their jobs, when AI could potentially be more productive, causing them to push themselves through exhaustion to breaking point. Layla and her colleagues at WIT are measured by IMAtech, an implant that monitors every second of their productivity.
After Layla’s girlfriend dies at the wheel of her car, through sheer exhaustion, her flatmate, Katarina, has a plan to put a stop to the abuse from rich corporate men and it’s about to get dark and deadly!
I was starting to wonder where it would end, as Katarina’s revenge became more and more shocking, and I really had no idea what to expect, so when the twists hit, I was completely stunned! So much so that I flicked back a few pages and read it again!
Absolutely genius! Well played, Emma Ellis 👏🏻
4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Emma Ellis and Victory for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Wow. Right from the first chapter, I was hooked on the seductive darkness these characters hold. The words flow smoothly on the page, and within a few chapters you’re engrossed in the story and Layla’s struggles. I loved Katarina, and her wicked ways and devious little escapades. Isabel was a wonderful catalyst for change, and I loved reading about the little things that made her feel real to us, through Layla’s eyes. The two main characters bounce off each other nicely, and the descriptions make the world feel immersive. The violence was well-balanced with character development. The tech feels genuine and like something that could actually happen one day, which adds a good touch of realism to the story. The twist at the end was super different and not something seen in many books, so was refreshing. Can’t wait to read book two!
Emma Ellis presents a chilling narrative in 'Be Her' set against the backdrop of a London controlled by the wealthy and powerful. The relationship between Layla and her housemate, Katarina, is intense, depicting the temptation of revenge in the face of personal tragedy. While the story feels grounded in a world that could be our own, the pacing occasionally stalls, and some plot twists are predictable. Nonetheless, Ellis's exploration of moral ambiguity and the consequences of unchecked power makes 'Be Her' a compelling read for fans of psychological thrillers
I kind of guessed the main twist half way through. I didn't connect with any of the characters and was expecting so much from the story. It took so long for anything relevant to happen. I'm a little disappointed about the main twist as I feel like it's been done so much already. I read until the end expecting it to be different, but was sadly disappointed. How we if you're not an avid thriller reader, you probably will be surprised by the ending.
This book is gross and disgusting and horrible - I love it
I enjoyed the scathing criticism of Capitalism and prejudice as well as the overly descriptive scenes of gore and yucky stuff. It was also good fun hating on the baddies with the MC too.
If you're a fan of the thriller genre, you will probably work out the twist early on, I know I did. Then that pesky Author switched it up on me again, wiping the smug smirk off my face. I liked that
It took me quite a while to figure out where this book was going and once I realised I was reading like a mad person to find out. What I liked about this was the twist was really saved for last, and I’m not just talking about the one I figured out about half way through the book (which I was convinced of, then talked myself out of it). The second twist was almost the last stroke of the book and I’m very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Emma Ellis is fast becoming one of my go-to Authors. She’s a wonderfully talented writer!
Be Her by Emma Ellis This was a great read, I really enjoyed it. I liked the characters, their interactions and deceptions. I loved how the story played out, great plot with a great twist. The story reads really well and had a good flow. It's one of those books you don't want to out down till the end. I can't wait for the next book in this series. This author is on my TBR list going forward.
Woah woah woah - hold the bus!!!!! Those twists and turns ... incredible. I loved this story and the characters. Midway through I was convinced I had it figured out , can't trick me Ms Ellis , how wrong was I!!!! Everything about the story was pure perfection. I won't give anything away but Jesus, dystopian at its absolute best.
I received an early ARC of this via Facebook messenger. I really loved the premise and some of the ideas throughout the negative however unfortunately for me, was i was aware of the twist quite early on still worth a read potential to develop like john marrs type spec thrillers.
I'm speechless. Did not see that coming at all. Never would have guessed that is how it would end. I loved it though! It took me a minute to catch on to what was happening. Once I did, I was mind-blown 🤯 Get yourself a copy. I definitely need to read the sequel!
I had to make myself pick this book up. I was very bored. The book was predictable. When the big aha moment came, I wasn’t shocked I had already figured it out. I will say I really enjoyed her style of reading. The way she switched from character to character was smooth and not confusing.
This one was a bit weird for me....., it's not something I would usually read. I still wasn't sure what was going on throughout the book. Whilst it wasn't for me, I'm sure other people will love it
WOW!!!!! Hooked from the first page and read this book in one sitting… Full of tension and suspense. A real page turner, a domestic noir but OMG so much more!!!!!
Oh boy, this book was a wild, wild ride! The world building was great, and it felt like I was actually there experiencing everything with the protagonist.
Truth be told, I did see that twist coming, more or less 25% into the book, but that didn't make me lose interest. The story gripped me, and all the little nuances made the story even more addictive.
The ending could have been a bit more solid, as I felt the author left it on a cliff-hanger. But I guess the sequel will tie everything up really nicely. This was my first book from Emma Ellis, and I think I am going to read more from her. I am already quite excited about the sequel!
I definitely recommend this for all the thriller lovers out there, especially if you are looking for a "different" sort of a thriller. Just one piece of advice, if you can, go into this blind. Trust me, you will like the story even more!
