They started the fight. John is going to end it.

Despite John’s best efforts to avoid getting pulled into a war, the Resplendent Empire is determined to crush John and Candle Scholar Tower. No sooner had he returned from the once a millennium magical competition than he discovers that the Empire has declared war, confident that they will be able to roll over John and his allies with little trouble.

Yet little do they know what sort of force they have provoked. No longer a man of two minds, John sets out to end things once and for all. As the Dragon Empress Kalmeric marshall’s her forces, John puts the lessons he learned on the battlefield all those years ago to work.

Venturing out from his beloved farm, John is intent on making this adventure his last so he can spend the rest of his days sitting on his porch watching his wheat grow next to those he loves.

Good, but getting complicated

I enjoy the Battle Mage Farmer series. This is starting to get a little complicated and far from storytelling, though. John is still an interesting character, but his powers are getting excessive. There really want much story after his conflict with Kalmeric, it was just explaining how his diety powers work. It would be nice to get back to the story of John and Ellie, and ALL the people (and beasts) who helped him in the 1st part of the series. I still will look for the next in the series, if there is one.

3/5 if this is the last book in the series, otherwise 4/5, see why at the end.

I get that this isn't a fantasy/romance story but 1% romance is a little low, lower than is realistic, as a result all the most interesting bits of a new relationship get left out (like all the firsts).
This would have been the perfect thing to combat the "palate fatigue" (the experience of being saturated with one taste) that this story suffers from. Of course reading all 9 books one after the other didn't help, but I won't read ongoing series while I have completed works to choose from.

Characters is what Seth Ring is best at, that's for sure. Naming them ? not so much, how can you name a character Even ? even the author makes the mistake of using Evan (what he should've called from the beginning), he also makes the mistake of using the same name twice (for different people) and using different spelling for it doesn't fix it, at least there aren't 7 different guys all named Kim like in some other book I read.

You know that thing I said in my Vol 1 review about not having any filler (time wasting text)?
Well with each volume the author would add a little more, at some point 5% of a book was a recap for the previous one.
And adding totally irrelevant info, like what 2 apprentice blacksmiths were working on, or who passed what and to who during dinner ... just boggles the mind... I guess this is the nature of the beast ? there's no getting away from pointless details in books?
There's so much stuff only a movie director would care about, but at the same time such small irrelevant details can be created on the spot by anyone if needed. I don't care who passed the salt and I don't care who buttered their bread, nobody does.
I know what you wanna say, it's a pacing thing, and you might be right, still feels like a waste of my time though, I'll blame it on my ADHD.

There's also something else books are guilty of, and that's replacing common words with obscure ones (like 'blanched' instead of 'paled', 'wont' instead of 'habit'), because making your story harder to understand is how you get more people to read books, right ? or is it so experienced readers can feel superior to non-readers ?
I get it if 1 obscure word has a meaning that would take 2 or more words to replace it with, or if the word is not that obscure, but otherwise I see no other reason for it.

The ending felt incomplete and therefor unsatisfying,
It's either a very rushed ending like the series got cancelled (in which case this gets a 3/5) or there is more coming (in which case this gets a 4/5).

Finale without being an ending

Alternate universe, magic, portals, LitRPG GameLit, OP MC, fantasy races

A lot happens in this book. John and Ellie meet several fierce challenges that push both of them to continue to grow, but by the end nothing feels settled. The implication is that a new series might be written, and that at least another series ties in as a prequel. I enjoyed the book, but it most definitely does not feel like any sort of ending, and a lot questions remain. John continues to evolve. Almost no interaction with the other pantheon aside from Ellie. Above average editing.

Series Review:

Overall the series is quite niche, good for its selective reading but the books really wax and wane. By book 3 I was already over the whole "farming" aspect, even though I understand that is where the bread and butter is, but at that point you have enough time invested into the series and enjoy many aspects, why not push through? And push through I did.

The best book in the series, in my opinion, was ironically enough the book with the least amount of farming (Conservation: Book 8). Going on the journey to a new world and witnessing John come to terms with his divinity (only 8 books into the series..) gives a new feel to the story, adding in a breathe of fresh air. Challenging Gods via wits and battle, seeing more aspects of this "Endless Worlds", and Good 'ol Dragon fights made this the highlight of the series for me.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the agricultural twist Ring brought to the table, as it is a unique and interesting play off the fantasy world, LitRPG genre. That being said, if you beat a horse until its dead, then resurrect it with the powers of the Eternal Flame and proceed to beat it more, it doesn't get better over time.

My issues mostly come from the fact that Ring has made this huge sandbox to play in and then focuses on the corner that has been dug out repetitively, only dabbling in the other areas to make sure he has enough sand to keep playing in his worn out section of the box. I mean the idea of the Labyrinth with these myriad of worlds, sending countless adventurers into, with all these quests - and Ring drops the ball by only mentioning any of this as if it were in passing, feels like a waste.

Ring gives John plenty of depth, and he has constructed well defined supporting characters to build up his story. Some of these characters might be left by the way-side, but a lot of them are brought up throughout the story. Towards the end of the line, many of the details for these supporting characters can get a bit garbled - like being constant with Ellie and her developments, to leaving in these wide gaps of information (talking about multiple familiars, but then not giving any of them the time of day afterwards). As for how Ring writes John? Honestly, I enjoyed his depiction of an almighty, overpowered, God-like character that still battles with his humanity and decides to stick with his own beliefs instead of conforming to some norm of being a douche bag - though in the final book he does very much contradict his beliefs on a grand scale, while the Mrs. Stockholm Syndrome wife assuring him that it is all for the greater good, even if he pulled a Thanos on three different worlds...

Yea... the end of this series was kinda shit if I am being honest - it should have ended on book 8, whilst sending adventure teams into the Labyrinth and adding the fact that they can return to the Divine Kingdome if they were to ever die...

All in all, I give the entirety of the series a 3.9/5. I liked the characters, the world building, and the story - even though there are some parts of the equation I could have done without. I am going to pretend that Dragon of Mercy was killed in Book 8 and the story concluded, because it is such a better way to end this saga than this atrocity of a Book 9.

I am not sure what to say about this book anymore. I just learned that this was the last book in the series. Before I found that piece of information, I thought I knew what I wanted to say. Now, I am not so sure. Initially, I was going to say that I was surprised at how the story keeps changing and keeping me interested. John ends up completely different at the end of the book versus at the beginning, though at the same time acting exactly the same. I was wondering while reading how many more books were going to be in the series and I was surprised that I was still interested in what happened. By the end I was kind of excited to see where the story would go next. Then I found out it was the last book in the series. That makes me question some of the choices.

As I mentioned above, John went through a pretty big change in this book. For 8 straight books he was on one path and then in this one he went in a completely different direction. That isn't a bad thing, unless you end the story there.

Too much closure, not enough story.

I really don’t want to be negative — I like both the author and the series that this book concludes — but the best I can say is that it was OK. After a brief burst of action early on, most of the book is dedicated to tying up loose ends from the previous eight volumes. That would be fine, if it weren’t also clearly trying to leave the door open for a sequel or continuation series.

Perhaps not every unanswered question needed to be wrapped up so neatly, or maybe it just felt like too much housekeeping because the author rarely concludes his novels with any sense of finality, preferring to simply stop the action and slap on a “to be continued.” It’s a valid approach, but if more closure had been built into earlier books, this one wouldn’t have needed to do quite so much admin at the expense of narrative flow.

It also didn’t help that none of the prior books felt like they were building toward this conclusion — and this final entry felt somehow both rushed and tedious. There was too much to cover and not enough actual story to hang it on. Maybe the better move would have been to stretch the ending out over two books. As it stands, it felt more like a series of checklists than a compelling finale.

One element that bothered me more in hindsight was the inclusion of characters and references from The Tower series. Initially, I thought it was just a fun nod, but it ended up spoiling key mysteries from an entirely different — and still unfinished — series. It didn’t add anything meaningful here and undermined the narrative tension elsewhere.

I listened to the Audible version, and while the narration was as strong as ever, it was slightly jarring hearing this narrator voice characters who were portrayed very differently in other books.

I wanted to like this book more than I did, but it was so focused on administrative wrap-up and multiverse setup that it lost the heart and character depth that made earlier volumes so enjoyable. Maybe it will read better on a re-read, but for now, it’s a disappointing end to a series I otherwise loved.

I'm really not sure what to think of this book upon finishing it, and that's not where you want to leave your readers in the finale of your series.

On the one hand, there were plenty of satisfying moments. I even liked how the days of John having to struggle for anything are long behind him. It was the natural progression of the story of an overpowered protagonist, and allowed the author to focus more on world-building and tying up plot threads than on delivering a nail-biting climax.

However, that being said, there were some bizarre decisions made here as well. John's time alone on the dragon planet, leading up to the climax of that story arc, felt like a side quest and not a relevant part of the plot. In fact, the whole John vs Dragon planet war felt like the author planned to use that as a climactic way to close out the series, but couldn't be bothered to write it, so phoned it in and moved on to other, more interesting ideas.

Instead, it gets wrapped up way sooner than you might expect, and the rest of the book is about throwing about 3-4 novels worth of world and story development at you in record time. Completely new concepts are spun into being, John's path progresses to places beyond anything hinted at in the story so far, and essentially, the story ended in what felt like an extended montage of a series that could have been if the author hadn't decided to end the series here.

It also focused 100% on John's story, ignoring all of the side characters introduced throughout the series. There are many characters from numerous books who didn't even appear here and were barely mentioned. It left little to no closure to any story arcs save for John... and even there, I'd say there's still room for more exploration.

So ultimately, it's a mixed ending for this series. I enjoyed it for the most part, but it fizzled out towards the end, rather than going out with a bang. Honestly, if the author had announced that he was going to continue writing this series after a brief hiatus, that would make more sense for the story we got than calling this a finale.

So sadly, the final review for a book in this series is a disappointing three stars.

I don't know the precise number, but it is north of 20. That is how many Seth Ring novels I've read over the last three years. I say this because I have enjoyed the series that he has created, as demonstrated by the number of his books I've read. So it is with some remorse that I realized that I had lost all enjoyment of the BMF series.

By about the first quarter of the book, I was wondering whether I'd even finish this book and whether I'd continue the series. I realized I was being a tad dramatic, so I just kept going. The middle part of the book was great. While John (more like "Jod") is so laughably over-powered that no conflicts even matter anymore, it was still an enjoyable read as we met some new people, saw some new perspectives, and finally got a somewhat satisfying conclusion to one plot thread. By the last quarter, I was back to my old negative ways.

For many, the highlight of this book is the long-awaited intersection (hinted back in book 3 or so) between the events and characters of this series and the Nova Terra / Tower series that Ring has also penned. But even that intersection could not salvage this novel. It is an easy read so it wasn't difficult to get through, but I really have lost almost all interest in this series.

Will I continue? Probably. I assume that this is not the end of the series and if another book comes out, I'll throw an Audible credit at it and download the book. But what started as a really fun and interesting series (remember when John had a doomsday counter until the world ended?) has turned into quite the mess.

Between this book and the last installment, this series' plot has fallen off the rails. I get a sense at where things are going (and there is a potential "surprise" that I am anticipating but thus far has not borne out) along with the ultimate 'big-bad', but not only could I not fault anyone for deciding to stop this series, but I think we who continue are probably the ones who are delusional.

The BATTLE MAGE FARMER series jumps the shark in this volume. So far I have enjoyed the series with John, a jaded former soldier turned reluctant hero who simply wants to retire as a farmer, being repeatedly dragged into more and more drama (at first just saving his world but in later volumes, saving multiple worlds) while growing stronger and stronger. While always overpowered, now John's status is a bit ridiculous (such as when an Ancient God turns tail and runs instead of facing him). The author seems a little desperate to find a way to move the story forward, this time having John declare a morally questionable preventative war and pronouncing judgment day even on those not directly involved. Nothing can hurt him and so where can the drama come from in a battle-oriented series? The cast of characters are still strong and fun, but I hope the author ties it up soon.

Interesting! Apparently this series takes place in the same universe as the Tower and Titan series. I haven't finished the Tower yet but unless there are major time skips in that series, Battle Mage Farmer takes place centuries after the Tower. I appreciate there not being any major spoilers in BMF. This book dots the I's and crosses the T's and connects BMF to the wider universe and those characters. This made for a relaxing read even though Sutton was having the occasional existential crisis.
It makes sense, in the context of this series where the MC starts off already overpowered, to end the series with him being overpowered still, just now on a cosmic scale. Dude be meeting gods and even they are in awe even though he has little clue as to what he's doing lol.

I’ve really grown to love the characters in this series, and I’m sad to see it come to an end. At the same time, it feels like the right moment to let them go. John deserves his rest! I also really appreciated how Ellie came across more like his wife in this one; it seem like their bond is stronger, and I hope they finally get the happiness they deserve. 🥲

the first half of the book felt a bit slow for me. I found myself more interested in the aspects and gods than in watching John fight another dragon, which dragged the pacing down a little.

it was a satisfying close, and it’s left me wanting to dive into another of Seth Ring’s series. I’m especially curious about the titans and the forge guy.

Book 8 part two

This is strange. I don't know what to call this. It's not really a book, but it's more than a light novel. A lot of stuff happens, but our MC is so OP that it has started to become a bit complicated. I'd recommend this to long time readers, but I cannot help but feel a little disappointed with how the story just stops when it starts to get interesting. It feels like this was the true other half to book 8, since the central conflict built up in the last 4 or so novels is not that big of a deal. Hopefully you get more out of this than I do and come into this much later when the next novel comes along.

I have enjoyed this series following John trying to come to term with his immense powers, the people who become a part of his life and trying to save the world he was brought to. By this time he has leveled up many times and is almost too powerful for anything to be a danger to him. Even the fight with the unkillable dragons seemed anticlimactic.

This ended in a place where the storylines have been wrapped up and it could be the end of the series. If there is more, I would likely read it but I hope that the danger is upped and more time is spent with the people and animals of the farm.

Wowza! Seth Ring pulls all the stops in this no-holds-barred series fanale! You absodamnlutely don't wanna miss out! And with Michael Kramer's narration you can't go wrong! All John wanted to do ever since he got to the valley and his farm was just to have a nice spot to retire. Little did he know what was in store for him! Getting a second breath and a wife Ellie, kinda sorta accidentally starting a new religious faith... even achieving Godhood... seriously!?! And gaining his allies all of 'em, people important to him! And Ohhhh yeah fighting Dragons and Demons and parasites! Something every one that's been following the series would know, well not about the parasites yet. But he's got one final task before he can finally get the retirement he so desires, which is to end the war the Dragon's insisted on! To stop the Resplendent Empire in it's entirety!

Seth Ring satisfyingly ends his series. Most of the loose ends have been tied up, but enough issues are still open that he can write spin-off series if he wishes.

I can't give away too much, but John Sutton continues to grow, not just in power, but in understanding of who he is and what his place in the Endless Worlds is.

Ellie his wife, Ferdie, his bull, Rebya, the plant mage/world spirit also have ends to their growth arcs.

If you enjoyed the first eight books, you'll like this one too.

I hope this is not the end of John story. This series had bring me lots of enjoyable moments especially Sigvald and Ferdie antics. Across the series i love book 1 - 3 the most as there is less politics and more farming. John is overpowered deity, eventhough some of the questions had been answered but there tonnes of the unanswered one. This ending kinda unsettled for me. I hope there is another prequel to explain this loop holes.
Its an enjoyable reading but sometime i feel distracted due to the some politics involved.

Book 9 of Battle Mage Farmer. When you have a series this long it takes a book to wrap it up. Not to say this did not leave room for more books, just that it was a great conclusion to a fun and exciting series. I liked how this ties to Titan and allows for development in that direction too. If you’ve not jumped in, this is a fun exciting series. My favorite part was the mix between faith and magic. Lots of points to ponder and leaves you with a smile and a good message.

Amazing

A series that involves a warrior and a farmer. I was enthralled with this series because it's the type of game I'd like to play. Not only does the main character create a sanctuary for himself, On a farm, but he also goes out and fights the evil in the worlds around him. He maintains the peace in his valley while still getting stronger and challenging the universe around him and his world. I am reading all Seth Ring's books and still find this series is my favorite. After finding this gem, i'm hoping that I can find more.

It’s hard to believe this is the final book in the series… there are loose ends and story arcs to be explored still

I really enjoyed this series, right until the end. The author continues to introduce twists and turns that add to the pleasure of the read. I have my doubts that this will be the end of the series - maybe a second arc? There are too many stories to be told still, too many unanswered questions and the series doesnt feel complete. Just my humble opinion though…

I want more!

Honestly, BMF has been such a good story since the beginning. I want more of John. I want to see him meet Thorn as they would be fast friends on the battlefield. I just want more of this story, as I'm sure many do, but all good things must come to an end, eventually, and I do believe this is the end of BMF. Thank you Seth, for such an amazing story, and for sharing it with the world.

Spoilers gah!

So much of my love for this series is also intertwined with a massive pout. There are spoilers, major spoilers, for a theoretically separate series. This is still one of my favorite series, but I'm mentally throwing a tantrum lol. John and Ellie are still fun to follow, and this still a wholesome (except to dragons) series. I'm curious to see where this will go next.

I read all 9 of these books in 10 days, I feel like an addict the way I physically could not stop turning pages. Many may think 9 books, really? Yes…really. Something a bit different but familiar, adventurous yet grounding. Take into account my taste in literature is that of a “mystery box” and you never know what you’re gonna get but by Jove this series was just lovely. Hopefully you readers out there bypass the corny name and just simply read, and enjoy.

The end of the series was really satisfying. He didn't just win the final battle, there was a long and wonderful section of him exploring the new world that opened up at the end. And it turned out to be a delightful crossover into another series written by the author, one that I've read and loved. So, I got to see beloved characters and recognize the easter eggs that were sprinkled through the series.

Please don't be the end...

Well, I have absolutely enjoyed this series, and it was fun to see how Seth Ring's other Forge Master series insects with this one. Lots of fun. Feels like the series might be winding down, though. Hate to have this end, but it has been a really fun series. Loved this book as much as the rest!

A bittersweet ending, and we got a tieback to the Nova Terra series, the Aspects, and their cast, although without exact details about how the current series' Millenium City realm and puppets were created. I suspect more will be revealed as the other series is published.

An enjoyable read with an OP MC with a decent set of ethics.

Just a farmer, weeding his garden.

A single thread running throughout the series is that John is just a farmer at heart. Culmination, book 9 in the Battle Mage Farmer series skillfully ties up the latest thread, while revealing how much more there is left to discover in the Endless Worlds. Well done Seth Ring.

Love it!

I have really enjoyed the story of John Sutten. I love the way it ties together the whole world he has going. The writing is smooth and flows well. The author has done an excellent job of filling in the details without getting so much detail it's hard to get passed it. Thanks and keep up the the great writing.

It was not bad, but I am quite disappointed in this as a 'culmination'. It seems like it just did not have an ending written for it? The book just stops in the middle of what feels like a chapter break? And then near the end we start misspelling the names of main characters? I am not sure why this was published like this...
