Dream of the Dead

Liz is old, even by vampiric standards. After a mysterious five-month absence, she returns to The Sanctuary, her current home. The outside world belongs to the humans while creatures like herself are confined inside slum-like camps that once promised peace and protection but now only serves as prisons. Inside The Sanctuary, provisions are scarce, and violence is rampant.

Liz returns, assuming nothing has changed in her brief absence, after all, five months is a blink of an eye to an immortal but she quickly realizes that more has changed than she could ever have feared.

The Sanctuary is on the brink of rebellion and Liz finds her former lover, Vendela at the heart of it. Having sworn never to meddle in the affairs of humans again, Liz tries to remain indifferent, forming an unlikely friendship with Katarina, a Seer and dabbler in witchcraft.

As tensions escalate within The Sanctuary, Liz must confront how far she's willing to go to honor her promise to stay uninvolved, even if it means watching everyone she loves die.

Den röda tråden var bra igenom boken och berättelsen hade ett starkt grepp om en från första till sista sidan ❤️

This was sitting at 3.5 for so long and I'm so happy that the last ten chapters boosted it to a 4. I binged the last 10 chapters in one evening/afternoon.

I'll start with the negatives of which I can find only two which is that some of the conversations feel a tiny bit repetitive mainly between Liz and Kat and Liz and Vendela. At some points it did feel that the same conversation was being had. I did notice a couple of typos and spelling mistakes but they were so minimal you hardly noticed them.

Positives: I love angry women so I adored Liz and Albin (I live the sneaky bastard). I love the reluctant hero archetype so Liz was right up my street. I loved her dynamic with the rest of the cast and her and Vendela was just *chefs kiss* I haven't read a lovers - strangers - to hopefully lovers in so long. The ending!!! I need to know what has happened immediately and I'm also dying to know what the deal is with the humans and why these domes were set up in the first place (I have a feeling fear of magic was not the only reason).

This was such an enjoyable book, easy 4 star

An interesting take on a classic vampire story. It has everything needed to make you hooked: interesting characters, mystery, self-growth and so much more.
I especially appreciated that the main character was very much morally grey (sometimes even straight up bad), it is refreshing to see a fmc with flaws.

I like it a lot! I have been obsessed with vampires since 2001, when I discovered Buffy. This was a great take on the lore and felt like a new take on it, but also old-fashioned, if that makes sense.

Liz is such a real character and annoyingly stubborn. I like that we haven’t followed her at all, but it’s still very clear that Katarina is her first real friend in a long time. I hope we learn more about Katarina in the second book (there better be a second book!!) and more about Vendela too.
Vendela was a big character, but we hardly met her, and when we did she was, understandably, cold and angry at Liz.

I’m also very curious about Gray. I feel a friendship happening between him and Liz. Maybe they can work through their guilt together.

Also very annoyed at Albin and veeeery curious who this asshole is! I have my suspicions, but Liz said he was weak but cunning. I feel like it’s his fault Liz is angry and doesn’t trust people.

I need to know! Second book now please!

I give it four stars bc I did like it but I could put it down. And I found that sometimes Liz’s thoughts was longwinded and repetative. And some of the background characters seemed a little one dimesional.

(I also would have liked for Mr Greenlund to have been punished a little harder, but that’s an irrelevant opinion to the over all story)

Really slow slow burn with complex characters you will surely enjoy

What do you mean the next book is not out yet ?!
I really enjoyed that book. I love the way it is written. The fact that the main character is not really the usual good character. Here Liz is more of a selfish, mysterious, dangerous vampire. But there is so much layers to her. She is selfish for a reason, she is not bad, she is not good but she is just super complex and very old with a hard story that make her past. She is still nice and I enjoyed following her and discover all her layers and why she tries to be as not caring as she is.
Katarina is someone I really liked, she is so important to Liz story, she is eye's opening. I thought for a while that she would be the love interest and was a little worried about her age. I kinda like Vendela too, she is though and she has so many reasons to hate Liz but she doesn't let go of her even with all the lies from Liz. I think it Will be really good to see her character be developed in the next book, I think she will be a big part of that story.

I was a little disappointed with the lack of "love", I hoped they would at least kiss because I love that tension but it's not like there was no tension, it's just that it wasn't the time yet. I can't wait for what will come next !

Every time I picked this book up I had a hard time putting it down! The author has done such a good job to keep the suspense, placing hooks along the narrative that made me want to keep reading to find out the truth behind it. Lots of reoccuring small characteristics the characters had that made them more REAL. Fell in love with them very quickly! The relationships between them also felt very real and reminded me of people and situations I've been through myself. The world this takes place in is well-thought out and really makes your mind wander what kind of stories are happening in other similar parts of it. Had a few moments where my jaw physically DROPPED. A dark, visceral fantasy story well worth the read!

I really enjoyed this book, I thought it should be for young adults but it can be appreciated by all ages except the very young. It's not a conventional vampire story and it's got twists and new plots that I wasn't expecting. There are also developments in both characters and content. I can highly recommend this book to anybody that likes fantasy/vampire stories with a queer twist and I don't want to spoil anything but it's very interesting what immortality can do to a person

A truly enjoyable read! This is the first book in obviously at least a two parter. It had me hooked on the first page and didn't let me go until the very last page.

Amazing story, characters and interesting world build! This story narrates the inner turmoil of Liz, a ancient vampire and her inner moral struggle.

Very good and easy read with thought-provoking and emotional turmoil, good for teenagers and up.

Also they are Gay! Love the lgbtq representation so much!

I felt like I really resonated with some of the characters in this one!! You could feel each character's motivation driving them and their choices in the book, but it mainly features the books protag Liz and I love her so much. Such a fierce character that you can immediately tell has been so jurt by her past, it felt really catharic to read this book!!

It was nice to follow a main character who's morally grey with many secrets. Though I did get frustrated with all the lying, I just wanted them to get along and be truthful with each other. There were twists and turns after every chapter, and it makes you wonder what the next book has in store. I really loved Katarina as a character, and found her interesting.

But just ‘cuz I suppose in the next one they will focus more on the rebellion scenario and the other things they left unsolved. I hope they’ll resolve everything in the next one, that’s a personal preference but I hope that there will be only one book since I’m not good with series.
Btw, cliffhanger at the end had just killed me.

It's a nice read that doesn't follow the usual suspension curve. You have a fairly steady pace of events that let's you stay engaged. You know what you're getting while reading this book, if that makes sense. It's not a typical BookTok book if that's what you're looking for but I enjoyed it :)

I love when people explain what happens in the book like going into detail about certain things.
I just hope that there is another book!!!!
