He is mine. Mine to take care of. Mine to lose. Mine to be betrayed by.
One of my most looked-out for sequels this year, I devoured this book in a day. Initially a bit weaker than its predecessor, Pawn’s Sacrifice was a slow burn. It took its time setting the stage, and I begun to worry it may not live up to my expectations—I enjoyed Checkmate fervently, and wanted the same for its sequel.
Halfway through, the plot grabbed me and would not let me go. When it picked up, it picked up. Fast-paced and exciting, twists I didn’t see coming, and serious development for the main romance, I was on the edge of my seat until the end. Pawn’s Sacrifice got a few gasps out of me and has left me anxious for book 3.
I do wish we had sat with the trials for a little bit longer, and I wish Cathalan had more time on the page. A part of me also felt like Theo and Luka didn’t spend enough time together, but the outcome of that was rewarding enough to let it slide.
K.D. Tabith is underrated, truly. This series is holds a proud place on my shelf; it’s campy and exciting, and I can earnestly recommend them to anyone looking for a light, fun read. This was just as good as the first, and I cannot wait for book 3.
