The Prophecy's Chosen Heir

Rate this book
An ancient prophecy. A hidden sword. A kidnapped king.

Ever since Toby can remember he's been the personal servant to the prince of Ariemday and his best friend.

When an old nemesis of the King's crashes their fifteenth birthday ceremony, a wizard saves all of their lives, and a prophecy is recited that reveals Julian is the Chosen One. Toby doesn't know what to think…probably because he’s fainted.

Julian and Toby are tasked with a quest that could save their kingdom and the rest of the world. That is, if the prophecy is even real and if Julian even is the true Chosen One.

My boys and I loved it!

We read this as a read aloud, and my boys paid it the highest compliment of, "Just one more chapter! Please!"

The art is both fun and engaging. Many of the pictures had my sons in fits of giggles. The characters are very expressive! The artist did an amazing job.

The boys loved the thespers, Trakko, and the chicken at the end (I'm not actually sure why, but they thought it was important that I mention the chicken in my review, so who am I to tell them no?). I love how encouraging and supportive Toby and Julian are to each other. I think they are a great example of how very different people can still be the best of friends. Sometimes Julian might seem a bit... too much... I suppose that comes with being a prince and a chosen one, but at his heart, he really cares for his friend and gives Toby credit where it's due instead of claiming all the glory for himself.

This is a story about courage, adventure, and the dangers of being complacent, but mostly, it's about friendship.

My boys already want to know when we can read the next one, and I will definitely be excited to read it to them as soon as possible!

*Audiobook review*

The Prophecy's Chosen Heir, by Trista Shay, is exactly what it says in the cover. It's the story of a boy who discovers that he is the chosen one.

He goes on a quest to save his kingdom, and his best friend comes along for the ride.

I enjoyed this straightforward storytelling, no secret twist where the best friend is actually the chosen one, no reveal umasking the prophecy as propaganda for a dystopian regime.

Just prophecy, quest, adventure, and fun.

The audiobook was self-narrated by the author, and she does a good job. Each character has a unique voice and since she wrote the book you know that each one is how they are meant to sound.

It was also refreshing that this was also a stand alone. Yes there is room for more stories in the future, but this book ends on a satisfying note with no cliffhangers or loose ends.

4.5/5 stars

This story is fun~ It’s fast-paced, lighthearted, and easy to follow. Young readers will love it! The characters go on adventures in exciting places and meet unique creatures (INCLUDING A BABY DRAGON!!)! It reminds me of a children’s Indiana Jones, except the characters are questing for a weapon to save their kingdom. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so readers looking for a more comical adventure will surely dig this one!

The content is clean, and I’d recommend it for readers ages 8-12.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review.

We highly recommend this book!

The narration by the author was fantastic! The spiders were creepy, the kids were funny, 13 year old really loved the audiobook version!

The story itself was very good! We need the next book but this one had a satisfying ending. The sidekick was hilarious and Draco the dragon is very cute!

Possibly concerning Content:

There is a wizard but he doesn’t really do any magic. He’s more like Gandalf with a wealth of information. He does travel via smoke and so does the bad guy but it never felt like any kind of dark magic, etc.

Funny, short and sweet fantasy with nods to the Sword and the Stone. I especially liked the illustrations. A good choice for young readers as it's clean and not too descriptive about the violence. I will continue the series.

4.5 stars. This was a cute story and easy to read. It would be great for middle schoolers. I loved the illustrations and enjoyed the two main protagonists. I wished the dragon had a larger role in the story. Looking forward to more in this series.

This was such a fun book! It was short and fast paced, and the characters were wonderful. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good middle grade adventure. And in a world that needs more boy-centric books, this fits the bill!

This review applies to both the audiobook and the paperback (since I have both)!

The Prophecy's Chosen Heir is such a fun middle grade fantasy adventure! I loved how the point of view stays with Toby, The Chosen One's Best Friend, which is a unique twist on the quest-like adventure.

The audiobook is excellently narrated and kept my attention throughout the whole story, and I loved it enough to immediately buy a paperback; which has beautiful artwork in the chapter-headers, by the way.

Overall, The Prophecy's Chosen Heir would make a great gift for the young fantasy-loving book dragons in your life! I'm very excited about the future books that will be added to this series!

This was a fun middle-grade adventure that focuses on the best friend of “The Chosen One,” which was a unique twist. A great story for boys that doesn’t rely on crude humor is a rare find these days, and I was so pleased to find this one. There’s a quest, a baby dragon, a prophecy, and two young boys having the adventure of a lifetime. Super fun!
